VESNA /
FRÜHLING
Yevgeny Yufit
Soviet Union 1987
9 min, 35 mm, b/w / no dialogue
FRÜHLING gilt als Manifest des
Nekrorealismus. Dieser setzt der
sozrealistischen Verherrlichung
des Lebens die Präsentation des
Todes entgegen und verweist so
auf das Ende des Systems. Eine
eigentliche Handlung bietet der
Stummfilm nicht; dafür groteske
Körper, exaltierte Gesten und die
Eisenbahn als Filmzitat.
SPRING is regarded as a
necro-realist manifesto. It counters
social realism’s glorification
of life with the bald presentation
of death, an allusion to the end of
the system as it were. This silent
film doesn’t actually feature
a genuine plot – but it does
offer grotesque bodies, exalted
gestures and the railroad as a
filmic quote.
The Aleinikov brothers,
founders of Soviet “parallel
cinema”, employ the conceptualist
technique of subversive
affirmation here, with the
aim of circumventing official
Soviet language. The result is a
parodistic hymn to the tractor
as one of socialism’s most sacred
symbols.
atonaler Musik, demontieren
sowjetische Heldenmythen.
Anstelle des Aufbaus des Sozialismus
wird eine fragmentierte
Industrielandschaft gezeigt, und
der „Held der Arbeit“ hat sich
in einen Leichnam, eine Puppe,
einen Feigling verwandelt.
Set to atonal music, images of
residential blocks, pipes and
rails chip away at Soviet hero
mythology. Instead of witnessing
the construction of socialism,
we see a fragmented industrial
landscape, where the “working
class hero” has morphed into a
corpse, a doll, into a coward.
SUICIDE MONSTERS
VEPRI SUITSIDA
Yevgeny Yufit
Soviet Union 1988
4 min, 35 mm, b/w / no dialogue
Yufit kombiniert hier sado-masochistische
Folterszenen mit
Originalaufnahmen, die den
Sozialismus feiern: im Takt
marschierende Mädchenbeine,
ästhetische Flugformationen,
Piloten als Helden des Volkes.
Vor einer Naturkulisse zerstören
die Helden einander, was bleibt,
sind blutende Körper.
Here Yufit combines sado-maso
torture scenes with original
footage celebrating socialism:
girls’ legs marching in step,
aesthetically pleasing flying
formations, pilots as heroes of
the people. The heroes destroy
one another in front of a natural
backdrop – all that remains are
bleeding bodies.
