SPRING is regarded as a necro-realist manifesto. It counters social realism’s glorification of life with the bald presentation of death, an allusion to the end of the system as it were. This silent film doesn’t actually feature a genuine plot – but it does offer grotesque bodies, exalted gestures and the railroad as a filmic quote. TRACTORS TRAKTORA / TRAKTOREN Igor Aleinikov, Gleb Aleinikov Soviet Union 1987 12 min, 35 mm, b/w / rus OV + eng SUB Die Brüder Aleinikov, Begründer des sowjetischen „parallelen Kinos“, nutzen hier die konzeptualistische Technik der subversiven Affirmation, um die The Aleinikov brothers, founders of Soviet “parallel cinema”, employ the conceptualist technique of subversive affirmation here, with the aim of circumventing official Soviet language. The result is a parodistic hymn to the tractor as one of socialism’s most sacred symbols. THE SEVERE ILLNESS OF MEN ZHESTOKAYA BOLEZN MUZHCHIN / DIE BRUTALE KRANKHEIT DER MÄNNER Igor Aleinikov, Gleb Aleinikov Soviet Union 1988 10 min, DigiBeta, b/w / rus OV + eng SUB Bilder von Häuserblöcken, Rohren, Gleisen, begleitet von atonaler Musik, demontieren sowjetische Heldenmythen. Set to atonal music, images of residential blocks, pipes and rails chip away at Soviet hero mythology. Instead of witnessing the construction of socialism, we see a fragmented industrial landscape, where the “working class hero” has morphed into a corpse, a doll, into a coward. Here Yufit combines sado-maso torture scenes with original footage celebrating socialism: girls’ legs marching in step, aesthetically pleasing flying formations, pilots as heroes of the people. The heroes destroy one another in front of a natural backdrop – all that remains are bleeding bodies. 107 SYMPOSIUM
