versteckt. Inmitten der Kriegszerstörung findet
er die Negative aus vergangener Zeit. Eine surreal
anmutende, bisweilen visionäre Kinomeditation,
die eine individuelle Geschichte mit Zeit- und
Filmgeschichte verschränkt. (mw)
In search of the lost film rolls of the Manaki
brothers, responsible for the first Greek film in
1905, a director who has been living in the USA for
a long time returns to his homeland. Like Odysseus
before him, he wanders aimlessly through a
Europe that has become unfamiliar, caught up
in the political turmoil of the transition period.
He ends up in Sarajevo, under siege by Serbs,
where the archivist of the city’s film museum is
hiding three rolls shot by the pioneering Greek
brothers. Amidst the destruction of war, he finds
the negatives from a bygone era. A surreal, at
times visionary filmic meditation that interweaves
contemporary and cinematic history with the
journey of an individual.
Das friedliche Dasein eines Bauern endet, als sich
eine Gruppe zwielichtiger Männer brutal seines
Landes bemächtigt, um das dortige Ölvorkommen
auszubeuten. Daraufhin trommelt er einige seiner
mürrischen Nachbarn zusammen, die sich die
Übeltäter vornehmen und eine tödliche Spur der
Verwüstung hinterlassen. Der Showdown führt sie
nach Moskau, in das alte neue Machtzentrum. In
symbolischen bis surrealen Schwarz-Weiß-Bildern
zielt das wortkarge Roadmovie auf den Raubkapitalismus
der Jelzin-Ära und die verwestlichte
russische Filmindustrie, indem es visuell an
die Tradition des sowjetischen Vorkriegsfilms
anknüpft und ironisch seinen Propagandacharakter
umcodiert. (mw)
A farmer’s peaceful existence comes to an end
when a gang of shady characters brutally takes
possession of his land in order to exploit the oil
reserves it harbours. In response, the farmer
recruits a handful of his surly neighbours to
take on the trespassers, promptly leaving a trail
of death and destruction in their wake. The
showdown takes them to Moscow, into the old/new
centre of power. In black-and-white images both
symbolic and surreal, this taciturn road movie
takes aim at the predatory capitalism of the Yeltsin
era and the westernised Russian film industry, by
making visual allusions to the tradition of Soviet
pre-war cinema while ironically recoding its
propagandist DNA.
