Der Film beginnt harmlos, mit spätsowjetischem
Charme und Freunden in Feierlaune. Plötzlich
ertönen überall Sirenen. Es ist der 26. April
1986, Tschernobyl, der Reaktor ist explodiert.
Während Menschen die Stadt verlassen und das
Schreckenswort „Strahlung“ von Mund zu Mund
wandert, drohen, lügen und vertuschen die
offiziellen Stellen. Bilder aus Kiew, das sich für
ein Radrennen rüstet, stehen neben solchen, die
das Ende einer Stadt und den Zerfall eines Landes
ankündigen. Nur langsam verstehen die Menschen,
was passiert. Die gefeierte HBO-Serie CHERNOBYL
ließ sich u.a. von diesem erstaunlich kritischen
Perestroika-Film inspirieren. (scs)
Die Roten ziehen durchs Land und nehmen den
Bauern, was sie noch an Essbarem haben. Bilder
von Hunger, Tod und Gewalt wechseln einander
ab, in Farbe, Schwarz-Weiß, Sepia. Im Zentrum
steht eine Bauernfamilie, die versucht, Widerstand
zu leisten. Durch ihr Schicksal erleben wir den
„roten Hunger“, das „nackte Leben“: leere Augen,
hungrige Gesichter, lebende Tote. Dabei wechseln
Visionen einer satten Vergangenheit und Bilder
einer hungrigen Gegenwart einander ab. HUNGER
33 behandelt eines der dunkelsten Kapitel und
großen Tabus sowjetischer Geschichte: den Holodomor,
die Hungersnot in der Ukraine 1932-33, die
Millionen von Menschen das Leben kostete. (scs)
The film begins innocently enough, with late-Soviet
charm and friends in the mood for a celebration.
Suddenly, the air is full of screaming sirens. The
day is April 26, 1986, the scene is Chernobyl, and
the reactor has just exploded. While some residents
abandon the city and the horrifying syllables “radiation”
pass from mouth to mouth, the authorities
resort to threats, lies and cover-up. Images from
Kiev, preparing for a bicycle race, stand alongside
pictures signalling the demise of a city and the
collapse of a country. Only gradually do the people
begin to grasp what has happened. Among other
sources, the celebrated HBO series CHERNOBYL
drew inspiration from this astonishingly critical
Perestroika film.

The Reds are sweeping across the country, seizing
anything edible that farmers may still harbour.
Images of hunger, death and violence alternate in
colour, black and white and sepia. At the centre
of the story stands a peasant family attempting to
resist. Through their fate, we experience the “Red
Hunger” and “life stripped bare”: empty eyes, famished
faces, the living dead. The starving present is
juxtaposed with visions of a well-fed past. FAMINE
33 treats one of the darkest chapters and greatest
taboo subjects of Soviet history: the Holodomor, as
the Ukrainian famine of 1932-33 is known, which
claimed the lives of millions of individuals.
