From the Headmaster 

A celebration of generosity and possibility 

Gratitude. That is the word that easily comes to mind as I pen this 

introduction to our Annual Report. Gratitude for all the ways you, 

the benefactors of Saint Thomas Academy, provide support for our 

mission and our students. You are essential to the Academy. 

Typically, private schools rely on three sources for their operating 

revenue. Usually tuition generates the largest amount of revenue and 

that is true for the Academy. But if that were our only source of revenue, 

tuition would have to increase by more than $3,000, making an STA 

education out of reach for many. 

Our second source of revenue comes from unrestricted endowed 

funds. Each year, a percentage of our endowment earnings are used to 

meet a small percent of the operating budget. In these economically 

challenging times, we have faced losses and have positioned ourselves 

for growth. 

The third source of revenue is the Annual Fund. The annual gifts 

from alumni, parents and other benefactors make all the difference. 

And, you did it again this year. Because you helped us reach our Annual 

Fund goal of $1.3 million, many things were possible. 

We did not reduce faculty or programs – the programs and 

teachers/coaches/moderators that our students depend on remain in 

place. We are grateful. 

We were able to increase our financial assistance for 2009-10 from 

$1.7 million to $2 million. The additional 

$300,000 gave us the resources to help 

families caught in the recession. We are 

grateful. 

And, because of the increased aid we 

have full enrollment, plus. We are grateful. 

This Annual Report is a celebration of 

your generosity. It also is a celebration of 

what is possible for our students because of 

that generosity. On behalf of our students, 

faculty and staff, thank you.

You could say William Shakespeare had a hand in the fact that Jim Keane became a 

teacher at Saint Thomas (Military) Academy in 1946, beginning a memorable career that 

spanned four decades and touched the lives of hundreds of cadets. 

His sights had been set on the law when the Minnesota native was drafted 

out of college in 1942. Before he was shipped overseas, he purchased 

Shakespeare’s collected works, a now well-worn volume that remains 

part of his extensive collection.

“As luck or grace would have it, I ended up in Iceland for my 

first assignment,” said Keane, 88, during an interview in his south 

Minneapolis home. “During those long, cold winter nights, I read the 

Bard over and over. That’s when my interest in English really began.” 

Geoffrey Chaucer could take some credit as well. After the war, 

Keane finished his final year at St. Thomas College with plans to begin 

a graduate degree in English at the University of Minnesota. One hitch 

— he lacked a requisite undergraduate course in Chaucer. In its place, 

the U asked for a letter of recommendation from the College. 

That’s when Fr. Edward Klein, head of the College’s English 

department, made the 25-year-old an offer he couldn’t refuse. 

“He said they’d give me the letter, but also that the Academy 

[then located on the St. Thomas College campus] needed an English 

teacher for the coming year. I could start earning some money right 

away while taking education courses at the College at the same time,” 

he said. “That sounded like a better deal to me.” 

Except for the 1950-51 school year when he attended the 

University of Minnesota full-time to earn a master’s in American 

literature, Keane devoted himself fully to the Academy until his 

retirement in 1986. (He also spent a summer term of study at Harvard 

University). He taught junior-year English for many years and chaired 

the English department. 

Keane’s teaching left an indelible mark on many students, such 

as Gary Sirek ’64. 

“To a young man in high school, Mr. Keane was a man’s man. 

He brought an intelligent maturity to the classroom and set high 

expectations for us as students. His approach was not just about 

learning the material but understanding it and he used a variety of 

ways to help us find the meaning for ourselves. His teaching was a 

good balance between academics and real life,” said Sirek.

Jim Keane comes to mind. From my earliest years at 

the Academy, when we were colleagues in the english 

Department, to the present time, when we meet at stA 

functions, Jim has always shared with me his latest 

discoveries of books to read, of language to admire — 

and/or to laugh at — and ideas to think about. I value Jim¹s 

gifts of enthusiasm, warmth and encouragement which he 

has given to me throughout what has now become more 

than three decades of friendship.”

“Jim and I are the old-timers. When we retired from the 

Academy, we thought the place would collapse without 

us. And to be honest, we were somewhat disappointed to 

discover that it didn’t! He’s been a great friend to me and 

to the Academy. there’s never been any question about his 

dedication to this school we love so much.”

“It didn’t matter whether you were an A student or a C student 

— he treated each of us as an individual,” he continued. “I was not an 

A student and I can remember in junior-year English him taking extra 

time with me on exercises to help me master the material. To this day 

I am grateful to him for those experiences and for the respect he 

showed both for his subject matter and for us, his students.” 

Kevin O’Brien ’69 recalls another side of Keane. “It was in 

junior-year English class, a week before a big formal dance, maybe the 

Regimental Ball. Mr. Keane surprised us by bringing in some china and 

silverware and making a place setting on his desk. He showed us 

proper table manners and decorum so that we wouldn’t look like oafs 

in front of our dates. He was a good guy.” 

For many years, Keane was advisor for the student newspaper, 

the Citation, and worked closely with aspiring journalists to produce a 

quality publication. Back then, as now, Keane was known as an 

absolute stickler for correct usage and grammar, according to his 

colleague and friend George Schnell. 

“More than anyone else I know, Jim has been dedicated to the 

purity of the English language,” said Schnell, retired Spanish teacher, 

former headmaster and a previous recipient of the Opus Sancti 

Thomae Award. 

Before retirement, Keane became a volunteer reader for the 

Radio Talking Book program of the Minnesota State Services for the 

Blind. With his stentorian voice, he read aloud and recorded dozens of 

books over 28 years. 

“We were lucky to have an excellent reader like Jim with his 

learned background and extensive vocabulary,” said Stuart Holland, 

manager of the Radio Talking Book station. “I know he got a particular 

kick out of reading the novels of Vince Flynn ’84, who sometimes 

uses local references in his writing. Sometimes Jim would come across

a character named Mr. Keane.” 

“Jim has been a bedrock of integrity, friendship 

and ministries throughout 50 years in Incarnation 

parish. every celebration throughout the church 

year — lent, easter, Christmas and ordinary time 

— Jim would lead, guide and teach both in the 

sacristy and on the altar. Jim made people feel 

their particular ministry and service was integral 

to the whole of what Church is about.”

“My dad loved to tell jokes in class. the hardest 

part for me being in his class was listening to 

all those jokes that I had heard a hundred times 

before. But he was a great teacher. In class, he 

pressed students to see how literature — from 

The Scarlet Letter to Hamlet — could expose 

‘man’s inhumanity to man,’ a phrase that probably 

stays with most of his former students.”

For several years, Keane, Schnell and the late Sy Turbes made 

weekly visits to fellow faculty member Fr. Tom Kolar, who suffered 

from Parkinson’s Disease. They took him to treatments, art supply 

houses and to the Guthrie Theater. 

Keane also has been intimately involved in Incarnation Parish in 

south Minneapolis, his church home for many years, serving as lector, 

lay presider, funeral assistant and member of committees too numerous 

to list. “One parishioner always says I was Father Monaghan’s 

right-hand man. I guess that about sums it up,” Keane said. 

Jim has been married to wife Kay, herself a former English 

teacher, since 1949 and the couple has four children — Michael ’74, 

Cathy, Moira and Betsy — and four grandchildren. 

Always a familiar face at STA alumni events and school 

activities, the Academy is just in his blood, he says. 

“I’ve said many times the roots are deep. I believe the 

excellence of the school is a partnership of the students, the faculty 

and the parents. Year after year, the three working together produce 

the enviable reputation that the school has earned,” he said. 

As the 2009 recipient of the Opus Sancti Thomae Award, 

Keane is among familiar company. The ranks of previous Opus Award 

recipients include former students Chuck Denny ’48, Jerry 

Donovan ’48, Peter Ritten ’51, John Myser ’52, Mike 

Wright ’56, and Fr. Michael O’Connell ’59; fellow students 

at St. Thomas College Bud Ruvelson ’32, Larry 

O’Shaughnessy ’39 and Frank Mullaney ’39; and his ST(M)A 

colleagues Schnell, Wally Kurtz, Turbes, Clara Glenn and Fr. Kolar. 

“I’m proud and humbled to receive this honor from this school 

that means so much to me,” Keane said. 

“I’ve known Jim and his family since 

1947. He is most deserving of the 

Opus award. His record of service to 

the Academy, to his parish and to the 

blind certainly justifies his selection 

for this high honor.”

The Opus Sancti Thomae Award was established in 1992 to 

honor friends and affiliates of Saint Thomas Academy. This 

award recognizes both men and women who have made 

outstanding contributions to business, civic, church, 

educational and professional communities. We honor their 

respective characters and achievements with this medal, 

designed by the Reverend Thomas Kolar, deceased faculty 

member. Its centerpiece is an encircled Jerusalem cross. 

Embedded sapphires grace each bar of the cross and 

representations of the two Academy logos denote its place 

of origin.

sylvester G. Turbes, esteemed History Professor Emeritus at 

Saint Thomas Academy, died July 22, 2009, at the age of 91 

from complications of heart disease. The popular Turbes was 

revered by his students because of his energetic teaching style that 

featured a booming voice and a love for his subject transcended 

only by his love for each and every student, and his school. 

Turbes, a two-time recipient of the Myser Prize for Teaching 

Excellence and a recipient of the Opus Sancti Thomae Award, was 

one of the few remaining members of the “Old Guard,” a group of 

teachers who came to the school together in the years after WWII 

and stayed on to spend their entire teaching careers there. This 

group was featured in the summer 2009 issue of Saber. 

“In an ideal world, every man would be able to say 

that the best man he knows, or has ever known, is his 

father. It is a fortunate son who is told by other men 

that his father is the best man they have ever known.”

Originally from Wabasso, MN, he took his first job at the 

Academy after graduating from St. Thomas College in 1939. He 

taught American and English History for 43 non-sequential years at 

the Summit Avenue and Mendota Heights campuses, and coached

Sylvester Turbes 1917–2009 

B-Squad football, hockey, tennis and track in his early years. 

His teaching tenure was interrupted twice by military service. 

After three years in the classroom, he was drafted in 1942 and served 

in the European theatre until 1945. He returned to the Academy but 

was once again conscripted to Korea in 1950 for a year. He earned two 

Bronze Stars for his military service. 

Turbes had been retired from full-time teaching since 1983 but 

remained very active for most of his life. He delivered Meals on 

Wheels, drove for Sisters’ Care, served on a number of non-profit 

boards and distributed communion to those unable to attend Mass. 

In 1985, at the time of the 100th anniversary of the Academy, 

Turbes authored A Family Album, the definitive history of the first 100 

years of the school, assisted by colleagues Wally Kurtz and Jim Keane. 

The Class of 1967 dedicated the Kaydet to Turbes as a man 

“who teaches with vigor because he is truly dedicated; 

whose enthusiasm in his work can only instill enthusiasm 

in his students; whose students become his friends rather 

than remaining empty names; who is proud that his 

students remember him, but more important, what he has 

said; who believes the process of learning extends beyond 

the classroom; who teaches the process of living through 

the processes of learning.”

was no Internet back in those days, so you really had to do your homework to draw

Alumnus Profile: nick Donohue ‘89 

For third-generation alum, east Coast 

has become home 

Attending Saint Thomas Academy 

was pretty much a given for 

Nick Donohue ’89. 

“Our family has had three generations 

at the Academy, so it was a predictable path 

for me,” said Donohue, who followed in the 

footsteps of his father John IV ’59, uncle 

Patrick ’71 and grandfather John III ‘35. 

But when it came to career, Donohue 

steered a different course. 

It’s true that like his father and 

grandfather before him, he embraced 

business, earning a degree in management 

from Boston College. But rather than 

returning to join the family business in 

St. Paul, Donohue felt drawn to big city life. 

His first job after college was with 

Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) in 

Boston. In 1994, when a position opened 

at J.P. Morgan in New York City, he didn’t 

hesitate. Manhattan’s financial district has 

been his base of operation ever since. 

Today, Donohue is an executive 

director in the Treasury Services division 

of J.P. Morgan Chase, and is the product 

executive in charge of J.P. Morgan ACCESS, 

the web portal used by the firm’s wholesale 

cash management and treasury clients around 

the globe. 

Donohue left J.P. Morgan briefly earlier 

in the decade to work for a start-up e-business 

consulting company. He says that while he’s 

no techie, “most of my career has been at the 

intersection of business and technology.” 

Donohue’s work has taken him around 

the world, including South America, Asia and 

Europe, to oversee operations and visit clients. 

“I spend a third of my time on the 

road. This is a huge company with clients 

and staff throughout the U.S. and all over 

the world,” he said. “Travel has been a real

eye-opener for me. While it can be grueling, 

you gain so much perspective by getting 

out of the office to spend time with clients 

and colleagues, whether it’s in Chicago or 

Singapore.” 

Being out of town on business got a 

bit trickier on the home front when his wife, 

Heather, gave birth to twins last year. Claire 

and Lachlan are busy one-year-olds whose 

daddy acknowledges that parenting twins has 

changed their life quite a bit. 

As his 20th STA reunion approaches, 

Donohue reflected on the Academy, where he 

was editor of the Citation two years in a row 

and was active in the Mock Trial program. 

“I know people say it all the time 

but it’s true — the teachers really do make 

the place. There were some extraordinary 

teachers at the Academy” he said.

are two examples, he continued, of “teachers 

who defined the character of the place. They 

helped to instill the importance of character, 

leadership, teamwork, community — and 

keeping a sense of humor —- that are at the 

core of my personal and professional values.” 

While Donohue was at STA, “it never 

felt like it was my father’s high school, 

although some teachers had taught my dad 

and uncle,” he said. “The combination of 

long-standing faculty members along with 

newer teachers gives a strong connection to 

the past but also fresh perspectives.” 

While Donohue and his wife (she’s 

a Minnesota native whom he met in New 

York) enjoy trips back home and are looking 

forward to seeing classmates at the reunion, 

they have no plans to leave the East Coast. 

“Twenty years ago, I never dreamt I’d 

one day be working for a bank in New York 

City,” he said. “Moving here has turned out 

to be such a great thing for me.”

Josephine (Nicky) Benz Carpenter — 

Nicky, an educational consultant, is a past 

president of the Independent Educational 

Consultants Association. She has served on 

numerous boards, including Macalester 

College and Minnesota Outward Bound, 

and is a life director of the Minnesota 

Orchestral Association. 

Amy Goldman — Amy is the chair and 

executive director of the Gerald and 

Henrietta Rauenhorst Foundation. A 

Visitation School graduate, she has taught 

at Berkeley and served on many boards, 

including The International Leadership 

Institute. Amy and husband Philip have three 

children; their oldest son is a 7th grader. 

Virginia (Ginny) Morris — Ginny, a thirdgeneration 

broadcaster, is the president of 

Hubbard Radio, a division of Hubbard 

Broadcasting, Inc. She is a former chair of the 

NAB Radio Board and has served on many 

other boards, including the Children’s Cancer 

Research Fund. Ginny and husband 

Jonathan’s son is a sophomore. 

vISTA Productions, STA’s combined theater program 

with visitation School, contributed to PAcer center’s 

national efforts to raise awareness about and prevent 

bullying among today’s youth. STA students

Reflection set for 

December 12 

Two years ago, the Academy introduced two 

annual Days of Rest and Reflection, designed 

to give the men of STA — alumni, the fathers 

of students and students — the opportunity 

to take a Saturday morning and look 

prayerfully at all the seemingly disconnected 

moments in one’s life, each of which by itself 

is “a piece of string far too short.” 

“We offer these days in the belief that 

if you allow yourself to relax enough, to rest 

comfortably in God’s love for you, to allow 

Him to knot all the ‘too short’ pieces into one 

long piece, you’ll discover an extraordinary 

line of grace — all the disappointments and 

joys, failures and successes, fears and hopes 

of your life sutured into one,” said

Identity and Mission at STA.

question. It turned out I was wrong and he was right. Tom had beaten 

me at Latin. My student had learned so much that he taught me. That’s 

awesome. I let him teach the rest of the class.”

Favorite Experience: “Although each Italy trip has been pretty great in its 

own way, the time I had lunch with Kathleen Coleman (chief academic 

consultant for Gladiator), just after the film came out, was just a little

The 2008-09 Annual Report honors and recognizes the hundreds of individuals 

who provided financial support to Saint Thomas Academy for the previous fiscal 

year (July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009). We are grateful to each and every one of 

you for your expression of support and confidence in the Academy and its 

tradition of educational excellence.

sTA… A Faith Journey

when Archbishop John Ireland founded the Saint 

Thomas Aquinas Seminary in September 1885, I 

imagine he did so with a mix of hope, anxiety, optimism, 

fear and a great deal of faith — in God, in the community, 

in himself, in the Church, in the students — that with a lot 

of hard work, this venture would be a success. 

Little could he have known the level of success that has 

been achieved and that this one school would evolve to 

become three institutions — Saint Thomas (Military) 

Academy, the University of St. Thomas, and the Saint Paul 

Seminary — which have educated thousands of students 

over nearly 125 years. 

Similarly, when then-Father Roach founded the “new” 

campus of Saint Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights in 

1965, I imagine he did so with a similar mix of emotions, 

again, rooted in deep, abiding faith. 

Dr. Mich often speaks about the history of Saint Thomas 

Academy in three eras: the original founding in St. Paul and 

the subsequent 80 years; the founding of the Mendota 

Heights campus and the following 40-plus years; and our 

present day opportunity to “found” this institution for the 

21st century. It is this third era, and the opportunities and 

challenges it presents, that attracted me back to the 

Academy. Especially given these economic times, it will 

take great faith on all our parts to continue the legacy of 

success passed on by our “co-founders” into this new era. 

This era will no doubt bring some changes to Saint Thomas 

Academy, just as there were changes throughout its 

history. The faces and names change. We recently lost two 

of our beloved “Old Guard,” Wally Kurtz and Sy Turbes, but I 

am amazed that there are more than ten faculty and staff 

working today who were here when I graduated in 1980. 

The facilities also change. The University of St. Thomas 

campus is hardly recognizable today from 1965 when the 

Academy moved to Mendota Heights. Our “new” campus 

has renovated some spaces over the years and added on in 

other places, such as the middle school and football 

stadium. In order to address our future needs, additional 

changes are coming to meet the strategic vision of the 

campus master plan. 

The advancement office has recently undergone some 

changes, too. In addition to my predecessor, Randall 

Hallett, leaving in April, Trish Rowley and Norb Winter ’87 

left in June. I am thrilled to report that Mike Maxwell ’84 

and Jason Sedlak ’93 recently joined us, respectively, as 

Director of Annual Giving and as Director of Alumni 

Relations. 

You may also notice some 

changes to the annual 

report section of this Saber. 

One of our main objectives 

in the advancement office is 

to fully recognize and 

gratefully acknowledge the 

many generous benefactors Christopher Ritten ’80 

of Saint Thomas Academy. 

That will not change. Anyone who made a gift to Saint 

Thomas Academy between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009, 

is recognized in this printed issue of Saber. 

However, we have moved some sections of the annual report 

to our Web site, c a d e t s.c o m/a n n u a l r e p o r t. We made these 

changes for three reasons: 

1) To make this printed issue more easily readable; 

2) To drive more traffic to c a d e t s.c o m, which offers much 

useful information beyond the annual report; 

3) To save money. We saved in printing costs for this issue 

of Saber vs. last year’s annual report. 

Some of the changes include: full descriptions of the 

endowed scholarship funds are available online; a separate 

section for Community Auction donations is online; 

contributors to the “quiet phase” of the Defining Moment 

Capital Campaign are online; some duplication of donor gifts 

for different gift categories was eliminated from the printed 

version, but they are available online. 

These changes are in no way intended to minimize the 

importance of any individual or family or gift. I hope these 

changes enhance your reading and understanding of the 

annual report issue of Saber. I welcome your feedback. 

On a personal note, I want to thank all of you for the 

tremendous welcome and sincere best wishes that my family 

and I have received since I accepted this position. I also want 

to thank the advancement team for their confidence and 

support. Your response has affirmed my own faith-based 

decision to return to the Twin Cities and to Saint Thomas 

Academy. 

Thank you to all for remaining generous stewards of this 

institution we cherish. I look forward to advancing the 

mission of STA with you, to furthering the legacy of 

Archbishops Ireland and Roach and the many faculty, staff, 

students, parents and friends who have gone before us.

the true definition of development

We’re all here today because someone took 

care. We’re successful and strong because special 

people in our lives — family members, friends, 

teachers, role models — took a special interest in 

us, whether caring for our physical needs, helping 

us develop our minds or nurturing our souls. This 

is what “development” means; it’s much more 

than raising a few bucks. 

In the early 1980s, when my classmate 

Vince Troy ‘64 encouraged me to help with 

“friend raising” for STA’s Annual Fund, I began to 

understand what development really means. Even 

today, when I make a call or contact on behalf of 

STA, recurring themes surface. One alumnus 

remembers a special teacher who took interest in 

him, another recalls the “spark” he felt when he 

first saw a painting, played a piece of music or 

solved a difficult equation. A staff member points 

with pride to a new ice arena or a piece of 

scientific equipment. A headmaster smiles at the 

memory of a once-unruly boy who finally learned 

his calling. All are evidence of development. 

When we think of development’s definition 

as solely financial, we do the concept a disservice. 

We know, of course, that tuition doesn’t reflect 

the cost of education at Saint Thomas Academy. 

The bottom line balances because of the 

generosity of donors who take care — alumni, 

foundations and corporations, parents, friends, 

and faculty and staff. In the 30 years I have been

privileged to participate in fundraising efforts at 

Saint Thomas Academy, I can tell you that these 

gifts make an incredible difference. 

Within the next academic year, the 

Academy will mark 125 years of new beginnings. 

Throughout that time, its mission — to help 

young men build a solid foundation of responsible 

leadership within themselves, the Academy, the 

Catholic Church and the community — has been 

accomplished by developing intellectual, spiritual, 

moral and physical potential of its students and by 

fostering the knowledge and practice of 

leadership. This development is self-perpetuating: 

We get better and stronger with every passing 

year, reaching new levels of excellence our 

forefathers could only dream about. 

Next time you see that Development Office 

return address on a Saint Thomas Academy 

mailing, remember to share the blessings you 

enjoy. Helping others achieve their goals provides 

a unique satisfaction. Acts of giving, great and 

small, help STA to continue to “take care” and to 

meet new needs in an ever-more-challenging 

world. 

In these economic times, the “candy dish” 

for giving is tougher — no doubt about it. The 

candy is now wrapped, and maybe the dish is in 

the drawer instead of on the table. It’s more 

difficult to take a bite. But it’s even sweeter.
