Screen time for kids . . .
Dear Readers
I hope you are all keeping well and staying safe.
In Spain we have been in complete lockdown and quarantine for 44 days as I write. I
am still working from home, my wife is still teaching remotely, and the kids are still
learning remotely, but one thing which has become very apparent is the significant
increase in screen time and the knock-on effect this is having on us all. The kids are
grumpier and more demanding than usual, I am suffering more with headaches, my
wife is just embracing it all and I have to say is flying with it! Anyway, based on my
own experience I thought some advice about screen time for kids might be useful
given the current quarantine.
How much is too much? There aren’t really any set-in-stone measures for this only a
lot of recommendations. Apple has introduced a “Screen time” function which is a
useful way to keep track of what is being used, and when. It also has a nifty
“Downtime” function so you can program allowed use at specific times, and also
block specific apps such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Youtube.
Android has a number of apps, just take a look at the store and search for Screen
Time. There is one called “Screen Time - Restrain yourself, and parent control“ which
is highly recommended.
Other things you can do is to apply a screen filter to your device. Easily available on
Amazon, this will reduce the glare and “blue light” that devices emit and which
convince your brain it is day time, and is especially useful if your kids like to use
devices later in the evening. The recommendation is all screens should be off 2
HOURS before sleep allowing your brain to calm and believe it is night time. This in
turn makes it easier to fall asleep and also to get better quality sleep. Take a look at
www.shorturl.at/eizES for more info about this.
Finally, on iDevices, you can turn on the “Night Shift” function. This changes the
colours during specific times from white light to more warm light claiming “This may
help you get a better night’s sleep.” I use it and have very little problem sleeping!
As always, please do ask your questions. Send an email to me, that’s Andy at
NHS recognises the work of Watchet Coronavirus Support Group
The NHS has recognised the work of the Watchet Coronavirus Support Group. Since
lockdown began the group have been busy delivering food and prescriptions in response
to over 600 requests from residents in Watchet and outlying areas, besides offering a
chat line to anyone who needs it.
It was set up by a group of residents before the Lockdown began, “We could see what
was coming and prepared well” said Liz McGrath, one of the group. “It began with
Georgie Grant, Sally Lowndes from the Onion Collective, Sharon Garcia- Vince, Sara
Summers, Janet Tapp and Sam Westmacott from Wacet. They foresaw a lockdown
would create all sorts of problems for vulnerable people which would increase as time
went on.” Swiftly they pulled in other individuals and organisations like the Coastal
Community Team, Mind, Village Agents Williton and Watchet Town Council and the
Quantock Foodbank. “When needed, a complex network of 40 volunteers was ready to
provide a shopping and prescription delivery service and another 20 were available to
provide social chit chat and emotional support on phones” said Liz McGrath.
None of this would have been possible without Simon Brown of Cotton Street, who
created a website, Facebook page and co-ordinated the telephone services necessary in
less than a week. Sitting in front of a bank of screens in his kitchen he created and now
co-ordinates the service which relies on Zoom meetings for planning.
The PPE problems facing the local NHS are benefitting from the generosity of Julian
Bloys from Julians Laundry, Minehead, Janet Tapp of Wacet and Simon’s co-ordination.
Nurses are struggling because as they come off their shifts they must change their
clothes to avoid contaminating their families. Janet and a small team are making
washbags out of sterile pillow-cases supplied by Julian Bloys so that a nurse changes
clothes on the ward or on their own porches, puts infected clothes straight into a bag
and tosses it into their washing machine for immediate cleansing. In packs of three
these have so far been distributed to Chard, Bridgwater, Minehead, Williton and
Taunton hospitals. Some are even being sent to a Lincoln nurse. So far over 500 have
been made and are on their way. The intention is to keep up production. “The nurses
need our help,” said Janet Tapp. “Imagine they are getting sore ears from wearing
masks so now we are making and sending out cotton ear protectors”. Everybody
involved from the volunteers who are so generous with their time, to the call takers, to
the sewers and Julian Bloys all feel the same way about giving their service. As a result,
everything sent out from Watchet Coronavirus Support Group carries a heart and a
message “made with love.” Looking ahead the group are packing bags of face masks
ready for when the lockdown eases and we may need to protect ourselves. Janet
pointed out “We are very careful about the material we use, advise at best they will offer
70% protection. We want the people of Watchet safe.” The group is in close
communication with similar networks which have sprung up in Roadwater, Williton and
other nearby communities as Liz McGrath said “We don’t anybody to fall through a
crack, which could easily happen with our out-flung communities like Rodhuish.”
The helpline number is 01984 573073
The Watchet Coronavirus Community Help group is supported by the National Lottery Community
Fund’s Place Based Social Action programme.
Watchet Town Council says ‘Thank You’ to all the volunteers
helping the Watchet community during the COVID-19 pandemic
The UK Government has defined how all of us must currently stay at home, stipulating
that you should only leave the house for very limited purposes such as shopping for
basic necessities, one form of exercise a day, for example a run, walk, or cycle - alone
or with members of your household, to provide care or to help a vulnerable person and
travelling for work purposes, but only where you cannot work from home.
Watchet Town Council urge residents to adhere to these restrictions to keep everyone
safe in the community, and even when doing these activities, please ensure that time
spent outside of the home is limited, and ensure that you are 2 metres apart from
anyone outside of your household. As people at highest risk have been advised to selfisolate
at home and not venture out for any reason, they particularly need help in
accessing support. Watchet Town Council has supported the establishment of the
Watchet Coronavirus Community Help Group in setting up a network of volunteers in
Watchet. This is a collaboration between Village Agents, Mind in Somerset, Cotton
Street, Onion Collective, Watchet Chamber of Trade and Watchet Coastal Communities
Team. The group have established a telephone helpline on 01984 573073, website,
https://www.watchet.link/ and Facebook contact page
https://www.facebook.com/groups/227835288360542/ through which people can
make contact and ask for help with shopping for essentials or information on other
types of support available. The Government has asked for volunteers to help in such
ways.
Due to the fact that not everyone in the community is on-line, Watchet Town Council
has supported the Watchet Coastal Communities Team in producing a special edition
of the ‘Watchet Connects’ Newsletter which is delivered by volunteers to all households
in Watchet, aiming to give vital information on how to access support from the new
help team, as well as from existing bodies such as the Village Agents, Quantock
Foodbank, and other support agencies. The help group volunteers who are delivering
essential food and medicines distributed the newsletter following appropriate EH&S
and hygiene requirements, and it has already proven to be a lifeline in connecting
many vulnerable people with the group.
Watchet Town Council can confirm that the groups plan, and procedures meet the
requisite guidelines in fulfilling this essential function and has provided supporting
authorisation to enable the volunteers to reach those in need in the Watchet
community.
Watchet Town Council would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in
providing this vital lifeline to those vulnerable people in Watchet, be it the Community
Help Group, or those looking out for their neighbours or relatives.
The Town Council commends the efforts being made by some selfless and amazing
volunteers, who are doing the very best they can in unprecedented territory and
uncertain times ahead.
