WELCOME TO THE GREENLIGHT FUND’S 2019
The International
Oaks Course
EVENT
SCHEDULE
RULES OF
ENGAGEMENT
Thank you for joining us for this year’s tournament as we celebrate
our impact across our city’s neighborhoods.
Today is sure to be another great day of friendly competition
between Greater Boston’s investors and entrepreneurs!
Every year, our 11 portfolio organizations touch the lives of tens
of thousands of Bostonians. This year we celebrate a significant
milestone- our portfolio organizations are reaching more than
100,000 children, youth and families annually! The solutions
that our portfolio organizations bring offer deep, life-altering
experiences for low-income families and their communities.
None of this is possible without you- friends, allies,
and champions.
As we set out to impact the next 100,000 lives, we will need
your help. Boston’s glaring income inequality is a call to action
for new and innovative solutions to our city’s most persistent
challenges. Proceeds from this tournament will help us towards
our goal of raising $6 million over the next five years and help us
bring the next 4 organizations to Boston to address the needs of
those most vulnerable in our city.
2
Together we will continue to do what we do best. Collectively,
we will identify our community’s most pressing needs, find the
best solutions our country has to offer, and cultivate their
growth in Boston.
We hope you enjoy learning more about GreenLight Boston
and how, with your help, we will continue to cultivate lasting
impact throughout the region.
Enjoy the day!
The format is team based: the Entrepreneurs vs. the Investors.
The team with the most cumulative points at the end of the tournament
is the winner.
Each foursome will have two representatives from the Investor team and two
representatives from the Entrepreneur team. Each team chooses its best drive
and then each member of the team plays his or her own ball from the location
of the best drive of the team. One point will be awarded
for the front nine, back nine and overall match winners. If it is halved (tied),
then each team will receive half a point for that hole. Strokes will be
adjusted based on handicaps, which are on each player’s card.
GREENLIGHT FUND:
INVESTING IN CHANGE
BOSTON BY THE NUMBERS
PORTFOLIO REPORT
2018
The GreenLight Fund transforms the lives of children, youth and families in high-poverty urban areas through
the GreenLight Method.
• Identify critical unmet needs
• Import innovative, entrepreneurial programs that can have a significant, measurable impact, and
• Galvanize local support to help programs reach and sustain impact in the new city.
We call our approach the GreenLight Method. The GreenLight Method is a five-part process that focuses our
investments where they will make the most impact. It’s how we stay nimble enough to address pressing needs and
seize opportunities as they arise.
WE DISCOVER
We assess the local landscape to discover
opportunities for transformation: urgent issues
that are currently not being directly addressed, and
where smart, effective approaches would make
a significant difference in the lives of low-income
children and families.
WE SCOUT
We search the country for the most effective
solutions: the nonprofits that are creating new
ways to deliver services, connect with their
clients and sustain their work.
WE SELECT
We look at hundreds of nonprofits each year.
Through rigorous due diligence we select the
nonprofit that is the best fit for the community—
that meets identified needs with innovation and
impact that can be successfully replicated.
WE INVEST
We invest our funds, time and passion. Our
community connections and strategic advice help
organizations ramp up and start producing direct,
meaningful change in the community. We continue
this support so that each organization can thrive
over time.
WE MEASURE
We measure the growth and effectiveness of our
investments and share that information with
investors, partners and the local community
The Oaks golf course is a Tom Fazio masterpiece,
a premier luxury golf experience and the
first Fazio design to open in New England.
Combining existing topography and dotted
by distinctive “waste bunkers”
and “naturalized areas,”
The Oaks delivers an
outstanding golf
experience.
This subtle dogleg to the right plays slightly
uphill. Off the tee, avoid the fairway bunker on
the right. Favor the left side of the fairway for
the best lay-up shot. On your lay-up, factor in the
bunker that guards the left side of the landing area.
Avoid going long and left on this downhill par 3.
Receiving well-placed shots, this green slopes
from back to front.
A long iron or fairway wood is the best choice
off the tee on this short, but tricky par 4. This
shallow green places a premium on distance
The elevation drops 100 ft. from tee to green
on this short par 3. Landing in the bunker isn’t as
bad as going long over the green. Pick the proper
club from the tee or face a tough chip to this
plateau green.
A mid-length tee shot sets up a short iron
approach. The front, left side of the green is
protected by three bunkers, deterring long
hitters from trying to drive the green. This small
green yields many birdie chances.
The best drive favors the left side, avoiding
the fairway bunkers. Several ridges on this
large green make hitting the correct target
area a must to prevent a difficult lag putt.
This is a long, difficult par 4 with trouble left
and right off the tee. Use a medium-to-long iron
approaching this green that is narrow in the front
and sloped in the back. The bail out area is to the
right of the green.
is narrow to the right. Favor the right side
for best angle in. Upper and lower fairways
divide the lay up area. This small, undulating
green has four separate target areas.
Playing uphill, the most difficult hole on the
course has out-of-bounds right and a large
sloping ridge on the left. Either lay it up short
or try to roll the ball onto the green. Miss the
green right and you will face a tough recovery
shot from a severe slope.
Favor the left side off the tee, avoiding the
difficult bunkers on the right. The menacing
bunker that guards the front center of this
large green highlights the approach. The green
slopes from back to front.
On this tough, uphill par 3, trouble exists left.
There is plenty of room to the right of the green to
get up and down. A ridge divides this green down the
center with each half sloping away from the other.
Tee off to the left side of the fairway. Favor
the right side on your lay-up shot for the
best angle to the green. If attempting to
reach the green in two, favor the right side
as it is heavily guarded front and left.
Club choice is key on this downhill par 3.
This green stands on a shelf that has a 10-foot
cliff over the back. Landing short is definitely
better than going long here.
This lengthy, downhill par 5 possesses a very
undulated fairway. It is rare to have a level lie for
your second and third shots. Bunkers defend the
approach and several slopes in the green make
getting the ball close to the pin a challenge.
This par 4 requires skillful play from tee
to green. Tee off to the left, so you are not
blocked by the trees on the right on your
approach. The longer the tee shot, the
narrower the landing area. A waste area left
and trees right make this approach tight.
Cutting the corner on this sharp dogleg
left is a tall order. Aim your approach to
the center of the green regardless of the
pin position. Be grateful to make par.
The waste area in front of the green makes
this par 3 shorter than the yardage. It
actually ends 30 yards short of the green.
CONNECT WITH THE
18
Even though the tree line squeezes the tee shot,
a long straight drive offers the chance to get
home in two. This green is protected short and
right by bunkers, grass swales and waste areas.
Your approach requires precise distance control.
