GETTING HIGH WITH A LITTLE HELP...
CAPTAIN JIM TOLAND AND SOUTH JERSEY AIR TAKE US ON A THRILLING TOUR OF THE CAPE
YOU’RE on vacation, and you want to do something
different that you’ll be talking about for days afterward,
right? Instead of hopping on a surrey with your mate,
how about taking a flight above and around Cape Island?
For the experience, the thrill and the pulsing excitement,
Exit Zero did just that. We went high up in
a Cessna 172 four seater plane. Luckily, the weather
was spectacular, and the wind barely blowing. Yes, we
were nervous at first but we had one of the most experienced
pilots in all of Cape May County as our guide,
Captian Jim Toland, owner of South Jersey Air. Capt.
Jim has been flying for over 30 years and takes up charter
flights, teaches flying lessons and guides sightseeing
tours out of the Cape May Airport, which happens to be
about 15 minutes from town. So, we cautiously stepped
into the white, blue and green little plane, put our trust
in Captain Jim and held on as he roared down the runway
and flew up into the blue sky.
As soon as we were off ground, our fears disintegrated
and we went with the flow. Captain Jim gave us
a tour of the entire Cape, with the windows open for the
record, taking in all the gorgeous sights Cape May has to
offer. We’ve seen the lighthouse and the concrete ship
loads of times but from the low-flying plane, it’s a whole
new experience. Everything looks so peaceful from the
air, fishing boats, swimming pools, and hotels all look
like big, expensive monopoly pieces.

The marshy wetlands, beaches, and
ocean are impossibly beautiful shades of
yellows, blues and greens that you could
only see from high above. It’s an amazing
experience to see the shape of the land as
the ocean cradles its constantly changing
scape.
After we landed and began to drive
back to our offices, the car ride seemed

way boring and slow. We’d been so
spoiled by speed in such a short time that
the rush of air from the car windows was
nothing compared to that of the plane’s
major wind action hundreds of feet in
the air. Our need for speed is satiated for
now but the hunger for more is stronger

County’s most beautiful and untouched
salt marsh via sit-on-top kayaks. The
guided tours depart from McDuell’s
Marina across the harbor on Ocean
Drive and are conducted in cooperation
with Aqua Trail Kayaks through
August 31 daily at 9:30am & 1pm.
Sunset tours are offered on Tuesday
and Saturdays at various times. $40
for a single kayak and $75 if you
want to make that a double.
Beachcombing at the Cove
Grab a hot cup of joe and meet a naturalist
at the Second Street Pavilion
on the promenade to explore the
Cove, one of the area’s ever-changing
habitats with ocean, beach, and
dunes. Held from 9am to 10:30 am
every Sunday in August. $8 adults
and $4 children ages 3-12.
Cycling the Southern Cape
Take a bike tour of the natural areas
of the southern Cape May peninsula.
The trip will cover approximately 12
miles at a leisurely to moderate pace
with frequent stops. Be sure to bring
your helmet, water, sunscreen, and,
of course, your bike. The tour runs
every Monday from 9am to 11:30am
and costs $8 for adults and $4 for
