Better than the best you’ve ever tasted...
Carpenter’s Square Mall, Cape May
AREN’T friends wonderful when
they notice you are helping everyone
else but yourself? Well, Kate
Cooper takes wonderful to a whole new level
because she not only noticed but decided
to do something about it. She’s nominated
her dear friend Bertha Rojas, who just happens
to read this column every week, to receive
her very own Cape Makeover.
THE SUBJECT
Name: Bertha Rojas
Age: 44
Height: 5ft 3in
Profession: Salesperson
THE TREATMENT
Bertha works locally in Cape May at Belle
Bleu on Jackson Street and has been
spending her summer working and taking
care of her three children, Francesca, Asya,
and Benjamin. It’s perhaps because of this
hectic schedule that she was searching for
an easier way to deal with her long hair.
So, she made her mind up to go short and
the folks at Artizan were more than happy
to comply. Stylist Chrise Allen cut Bertha’s
hair until there was only a few inches left,
putting into a real short style but still keeping
it ultra-feminine. Bertha’s hair color
was a few different shades, residual effects
from when she put color into it about a
year ago. “It never comes out right,” she
said. Never until now. Chrise took Bertha’s
color and fixed it, dying it to a color in
between red and brown. Subtle and pretty,
not drastic.
THE REACTION
Bertha was delighted to be chosen for a
makeover and kept saying how her friend
Kate was “so sweet” to nominate her. She
had wanted a new look for about a year and
was having hard luck finding the time and
money to devote to herself. With three children
to take care of, things that may seem
everyday to most folks, are considered
luxuries in Bertha’s world. Her husband
Stephen is a truck driver so he is often away
from home, really leaving it up to Bertha
to take care of her family. The day of the
makeover, Stephen happened to be home
and told his wife, “that’s beautiful.” Their
daughter Frannie added, “Now you look
like a mom.” We’re not sure if that’s good
or bad but we must say that this was one
good makeover, or perhaps in this instance
it should be called a makeunder. Whether
it was over or under, Bertha said she “feels
like a new person” and that Chrise “did a
great job.”
THE TIPS
1. When styling your hair, always start with
the hair underneath first. Use clips and
style once section at a time.
2. Be careful with processing your hair at
home. It is very suceptible to damage from
chemicals and may not turn out the color
you wished it would.
3. Make sure you are using the right brush.
For ethnic hair, choosing a natural boar
hair brush is best. They’re the least damaging
bristles.
