BEACH BOOK
OF THE WEEK
Love in the Time of Cholera
by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
THE PLOT IN A NUTSHELL
Fermina Daza first meets Florentino Ariza
when he delivers her father a telegram. In
the two years that follow, the couple see each
other only in passing, though they write love
letters daily. However, when Fermina’s father
Lorenzo finds letters in her room, he takes
her on a long journey not to end until she has
forgotten about Florentino. On the journey,
Fermina’s older cousin Sanchez helps the two communicate
via telegraph but when Fermina returns, she is 17 and hardly
recognizable to Florentino. When Fermina sees him, she is suddenly
disgusted with him and herself for ever being in love with him.
After she tells Floretino to “forget it” he tries once more to pursue
her to no avail. In the fifty-one years, nine months, and four days
that follow, Florentino doesn’t have the chance to speak or to see
Fermina in private. Hope is not all lost for Florentino as he gets his
chance to woo Fermina again later in life.
WHY YOU SHOULD READ IT
Because it’s perhaps the most romantic book ever and realistic in
ways that you can’t imagine, at least if you take our word for it. But
Gabriel Garcia Marquez IS one of the most outstanding lyrical writers
of the century and this book is soulfoul and romantic without
being sappy. Marquez is a Nobel-Prize winning author who paints
perhaps one of the greatest love stories every told as “lush and dazzling
as a dream” according to the publisher.
