CHIEF of Police Diane Sorantino has been
the law in this town for almost 20 years
and, not so surprisingly, finds it difficult
to relax here in the city. Was there a time
when she was carefree?
1. Favorite restaurant in Cape May?
Merion Inn.
2. The last CD you bought? I can’t
remember. I don’t spend much time listening
to music.
3. Your favorite movie of all-time?
GI Jane with Demi Moore
4. Favorite book? My autographed copy
of “The World of Beretta.”
5. What’s the best thing about Cape
May? The city has provided me with great
opportunities in my career that are uncharacteristic
for a small city.
6. And the worst thing? Cape May is
often criticized by individuals who have little
to no knowledge of our city.
7. If you could change one thing
about yourself, what would it be?
My friends and family describe me as “rigid.”
So, I guess I should work on doing
more and worrying less.
8. Most treasured possession? Defiantly
my Doberman Pinchers, Max and
Maya.
9. You have a whole night to spend
in Cape May. Weather is perfect.
What would you do? Unfortunately,
it’s difficult for me to relax and enjoy Cape
May. When in town I’m usually in work
mode.
10. What’s the nicest hotel room
you’ve ever stayed in? A small hotel
just north of Brussels, Belgium. The hospitality
and view of the countryside were
second to none. Each night the chef would
prepare a five-course gourmet meal.
11. Have you ever surfed? If not,
would you like to learn? Yes, I have.
However, it has been many years now. At
this point, I don’t think it would be smart to
begin a new hobby such as surfing.
12. In an ideal world, how would
you solve the parking problem in
town? I am going to “cop” out of answering
this question. I can say that the city
works constantly at trying to increase the
number of available parking spaces. Remember
this, we are a very popular small
town with a large number of visitors who
like the convenience of having their vehicle
with them.
13. When did you first arrive in Cape
May and why are you still here? I
came to Cape May in 1987. I was hired as
a Special Law Enforcement Officer and the
rest is history.
14. Favorite OTHER vacation spot
in the world? Any place with a warm climate
that offers outdoor activities.
15. When and where were you at
your happiest? Although life is good at
the present time, I would say that I was
happiest growing up in a small rural farming
community. My greatest responsibilities
were riding my motorcycle, hunting
with my dad and hitting home runs for our
softball team.
16. Favorite hobby? Without a doubt,
clay target shooting.
17. We’re not calling you a
potential Death Row inmate, but
what would your last meal be?
A good steak.
18. If a tourist asked you to name
the ONE thing they had to do in this
area, what would it be? A horse and
carriage ride because you can relax and experience
the charm and beauty of our city.
19. Favorite city in America, and
why? I have a few but San Antonio, Texas
comes to mind because of the great memories
involving major clay shooting events.
20. Do you think you’ll stay here for
the rest of your life? No, I’ve a few goals
I would like to pursue after retirement and
