just as quickly as you notice it.
No headless servants, dead
Irish maids invisible from the
waste down floating toward you
with a tray of scones, no chain
rattling, sheet covered ghouls…
just blurs of light. Sometimes,
not even that. Ghosts can be
“sensed” by the living…sometimes
heard, seldom seen. “I get
that a lot!,” said Lenanne. “I’ll
see things…I see that (the blurs
and shadows) upstairs a lot,” she
added.
Jack also told me an interesting
story about a nearby neighbor
who passed years ago and
has since returned to reclaim her
home that was “taken” from her.
THAT story will have to wait
until the owners of the nearby
property want to let us in on the
whole story!
I sensed what I thought
was calliope music… playing
throughout the house. “Vesta
was noted as being a beautiful
singer and played the piano and
people told me they would come
here to sing and listen to her
play,” Lenanne mentioned.
The ghosts of the Albert
Stevens Inn wanted me to thank
Lenanne and her husband
Jimmy, for letting them stay in
their old home for a while longer.
They told us it is difficult when
one dies and has to leave a home
they loved for so many years. It
is like being evicted or kicked out
in the street. Even though they

could cross over, they simply
don’t want to; they like it here.
They also told me they have lots
of company in town.
Ah, Cape May, perhaps
America’s original “ghost town!”
Jack seems to be the official
spokesperson of the Stevens
family now. Vesta was very quiet
and in the shadows. Apparently
she was very proper in life and
remains that way in death.
As for Lenanne’s skeptical
husband Jimmy, who was busy
with a tour project and was not
present for my interview, they
showed me him with mustard
“all over the place.” I asked
Lenanne why he puts mustard
on everything. She replied he
really doesn’t like mustard but
the mustard I was seeing “all
over the place” was a jar of mustard
he recently broke in the
kitchen! It seems the ghosts simply
wanted to let Jimmy know
they are around and keeping an
eye on the place. What could be
better than free help?
West Cape May, only a
few blocks from the hustle and
bustle of Cape May proper, is
really the forgotten stepchild. It
shouldn’t be. Places like The
