Craig McManus... THE GHOST WRITER
IS THE DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE? HE DIED IN 1942, BUT IT WOULD SEEM THAT DR. ALBERT STEVENS
IS MOST DEFINITELY STILL IN, AND HE HASN’T STOPPED EXAMINING HIS PATIENTS EITHER...
I
KNEW there was a ghost in the house;
you could feel it as you entered the front
door. It was a very commanding presence,
that of someone watching over place.
The ghost seemed to know exactly what I
was doing.
Sure, we were all on just a regular old
MAC house tour last October, but it is never
the “house” I am interested in seeing…it is
the energy of a house I am much more interested
in exploring. In this case, the “energy”
decided to explore me first!
The Doctor is definitely IN at the Albert
Stevens Inn Bed and Breakfast on Myrtle
Street in West Cape May. As a matter of fact,
the Doctor IS Albert Stevens! Dr. Stevens
may not have been able to save himself in
1942 when he died, but he can sure watch
over everyone and everything that comes
and goes in his old home, one of Cape May’s
most delightful Victorian B & Bs.
When I first met Lenanne Labrusciano,
I could sense she was an old soul, who was
in touch with the energy of the house. After
introducing myself as a Psychic Medium,
Lenanne told me that they have indeed had
guests report activity in the old Victorian
home. I spent a few minutes in the front parlor
area where I felt the energy at the time,
to be the strongest. I could hear, in my head,
The Albert Stevens Inn in West Cape May is
host to many friendly ghosts
a man’s deep, commanding voice, telling me
he was the previous owner of the home. It
was Dr. Stevens.
Lenanne had asked me to go upstairs,
to see if I could pick up the activity on the
second floor. I found a rear bedroom; formerly
Dr. Steven’s reading room, to be the
hot spot. There I found the ghost of an older
woman who did not (or would not) identify
herself. This room, confirmed Lenanne, was
where several guests reported everything
from doors opening and closing to the bed
shaking.
OK, I thought, doors opening and closing…the
bed shakes…ugh, just another “garden
variety” haunting. So I made a mental
note of it and returned to the living downstairs.
On leaving, I told Lenanne that her
ghosts were sending her a warning about a
problem in the cellar. Some appliance or
something was about to break and cause
trouble. She mentioned they would check
the furnace; we said our goodbyes and parted.
Then came this column. I kept thinking
back to last October, about Dr. Stevens and
the house, and wondering what the old boy
may have been up to in my absence. I gave
Lenanne a call and she agreed to be a part of
my ghostly journal of Cape May.
On a muggy day, a few weeks back,
in between checking in guests, Lenanne
graciously spent some time with me as we
further unraveled the mystery of the Albert
Stevens Inn.
The first thing Lenanne had to tell me
was about the ghost’s prediction from last
