WELL, it’s finally happened. It took
16 columns and over 25,000
words, but it’s finally happened…
I have nothing to say (I can hear the cheering
from here). That’s it, the well has run
dry, the fountain has been plugged, the
Grand Canyon of my brain is filled, and
the Gup is empty (HA! Tell me what THAT
refers to and I’ll give you a dollar). Anyway,
if the column seems really random and
wayward this week (more so than usual, I
mean) I ask your forgiveness, I don’t have
the words to express my sorrow. I’m not
kidding, I really don’t.
Did you know Goldie Hawn turned
down the role of Lois Lane in the original
Superman movie starring Christopher
Reeve? Doesn’t seem to have hurt her career
as much as Margot Kidder’s, who actually
got the part… then went nuts. Which
reminds me that South Jersey/Philly girl
Linda Fiorentino was reportedly up for the
same role in Tim Burton’s aborted remake of
seven or eight years back (with Nicolas Cage
slated to play Superman) written by Kevin
Smith. I’m not sure if that movie would have
been a spectacular success or an even more
spectacular failure. One thing’s for sure, it
would have been interesting either way.
If you’re ever feeling mellow and want
to relax with some great songs from the ’50s,
’60s and ’70s, tune in to my good friend Jim
Macmillan’s show on 1230AM WCMC.
Jim has one of the all-time soothing voices
and is a great guy to boot. He and I shared
many a stage together while working for
Tom Cupp’s Finelife Productions.
By the time you read this, Larry Bowa
will either have been fired as manager of the
Phillies or wishing he had been. I’ve gone
from being outraged at the players’ behavior
to just plain bored with it. It’s a shame
there’s no place for a fiery, passionate guy
like Bowa in today’s game. It used to be good
thing to care, now it just makes the players
nervous and uncomfortable – the uber-sensitive,
overpaid, thin-skinned weenies. This
team should be ashamed of the way they’ve
quit on their boss.
But at least the first Eagles game is only
a few weeks away (9/12). Sixteen-and-oh,
baby. sixteen-and-oh! Who needs a running
back?

I know I spewed some venom at Allen
Iverson last week for getting suspended
from an Olympic qualifying game. What I
didn’t say is that I’m also very proud of him,
and all the others on the team, who decided
to go, security risks aside, and represent
their country. I’m not a big Iverson guy, but
I do admire his patriotism and dedication.
And gold medal or not, I think these guys
really care and are giving maximum effort.
I’s just a poorly constructed team – no
shooters, no point guard.
I see there are now GUYS GONE WILD
videos available for the ladies (ahem) to
enjoy. I didn’t think I could find anything
less interesting than a GIRLS GONE WILD
video, but here it is. So if drunken frat guys
with sideways baseball caps taking their
clothes off is your thing, knock yourself out.
I see enough naked drunk guys at work.
Most of you know that I am very much
a Republican. I don’t really have anything
against Kerry; I just don’t know what he
stands for. I also happen to think George
W. is waging the most important war in
the history of our country and, perhaps, the
world, and waging it well. That said; enough
