FROM CAPE MAY TO CRACOW,
AND VENICE TO THE VILLAS...
ON THIS DAY...
Cape May Wave, August 27, 1904
THE CHOIR of St. Paul’s Lutheran church, Philadelphia,
was Thursday given an outing to this resort. The
members, to the number of about seventy-five, came
down on the early morning excursion and during
the remainder of the day had a most enjoyable time.
The choir after arriving here went to Cape May Point
where it spent the morning. It visited all the points of
interest, including the life-saving station, Lake Lily,
the steamboat landing and the lighthouse. All proved
to be very interesting to the members, some of whom
never had been here before. In the afternoon the
choir took a sail from Sewell’s Point, several launches
being used to accommodate it. A most enjoyalbe time
was had by all. A number of selections were sung
while in the launches., The choir returned to Philadelphia
last evening, much delighted with the day’s
outing. Mr. Henry Eckhart, choir mastor and Rev. F.
Wichan pastor accompanied the choir.
Star and Wave, August 26, 1954
IN THE FACE of a coastwide slump in resort business,
Cape May this summer has registered substantial
gains in the number of visitors and in its dollar-colume
of business, it was disclosed this week in a
late-season survey conducted by The Star and Wave.
With all-time record crowds of visitors reported every
weekend by police and the Cape May Beach Patrol on
city streets and bathing beaches, the survey revealed
a mixture of individual businessmen’s reactions.
Some reported business was better than last season;
others said it has been as good; while others reported
varying degrees of loss below last year’s figures. Figures
for total bank deposits and the volume of postal
businiess done in Cape May, however, show the 1954
season is better than last year. Post office volume and
receipts as of Tuesday were better than 10 per cent
above those for a comparable period last year.
Cape May County Gazette Leader, August 27, 1979
THE CAPE May County Bridge Commision is seeking
federal funds for the construction of a stationary,
high-level bridge to replace the drawbrige at the
Middle Thorofare. The span, which connects the
Cape May area with Wildwood Crest via the Ocean
Drive, is the scene of frequent tie-ups caused by a
large number of bridge openings. “The only answer
is a high level bridge that doesn’t have to open,”
explained Edwin S. Nesbitt, general manager for
the bridge commission. In just one year’s time,
Nesbitt noted that the number of bridge openings
nearly doubled at the Middle Thorofare.
