CILANTRO’S OVER-STUFFED SANDWICHES
THERE are a fair number of us veggies out there who want
to go out and enjoy good food without having to guess whether
the restaurant will be non-meat friendly. We at Exit Zero
have started this weekly column to keep you locals and visitors
attuned to the menu selections and degree of friendliness
local eateries have. This time we grabbed a sandwich at Cilantro,
the newest joint in West Cape May.
THE WINE COLUMN
GLENN GORMAN SAYS GOODBYE TO HOT SUMMER NIGHTS AND HELLO TO COOL GERMAN BEERS
THE official summer season is
fast coming to a close and what
better way to recognize it than
to celebrate the rollout of the Fall 2004
Oktoberfest beers.
Oktoberfest (the celebration) was
established in October of 1810 by
Prince Ludwig of Bavaria in celebration
of his marriage to Princess Therese of
Saxony-Hildburghausen.
The event was originally built
around a horse race and a state agricultural
show. Times have changed and
the horse race is no longer a part of
Oktoberfest, though the agricultural
show continues.
The beer that was poured at the first
Oktoberfest also continues to this day.
The beer poured at this celebration is
called Bavarian Märzenbier. Typically it
is dark copper in color, mildly hopped
with an alcohol content around 4.5%.
There are many beers on the market
today calling themselves “Oktoberfest
Ale”. Some brewers try to emulate the
famous old-world style. Sam Adams,
Weyerbacher and Harpoon are good
examples of brew masters making serious
attempts to recreate Märzenbier.
Others simply brew a beer for the season
and slap a “Fest” on the label.
Otter Creek is an example of using
an inappropriate designation on a seasonal
beer. Under no circumstance am
I saying this is not a good beer. It is a
good brew, but more a red ale than a
Märzenbier.
The benchmarks of the Oktoberfest
beers are Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr.
Both are reddish in color and display
fragrant notes of toasted malt and a bit
of caramel. Spicy, sweet and herbal at
the same time, there is a lot going on
in these bottles. They are a fine drink
anytime of the year, but they really
shine when the air gets crisp. True
Oktoberfest beers are a perfect fit for
the change of seasons.
THE world has turned no-carb and we veggies are put at a
disadvantage because of the no-meat thing. With all the
Atkins Addicts out there today, eating a seemingly endless
supply of no-carb varieties of food from bacon to filet, you
may ask, where does the vegetarian fit in to this madness? Let it
go...whether veggie or carnivore, we ALL get the jones for a good
sandwich, yes? Biting into a yummy roll now and again is good for
your soul, really it is. Carbs elevate the happy vibe in you. So, with
that philosophy, we headed into Cilantro in West Cape May for a
good old-fashioned sandwich lunch.
The Veggie Sandwich was served on a long semolina wheat
roll toasted with sesame seeds. There were so many veggies in it
that it was overflowing, which was a good thing. Fresh spinach,
roasted red peppers, broccoli rabe, mushrooms, and zucchini
were all sauteed by cook Mike Irwin in a bit of olive oil and garlic,
then placed in the long roll with provolone cheese and a balsamic
vinaigrette.
This sandwich was so huge and delicious, partly because
the balsamic vinaigrette juice saturated the roll, though it wasn’t
soggy. Rather, it was just really flavorful and damn good.
The small restaurant on Sunset has only seven tables and is
tastefully decorated in a tropical, Havana bamboo style, with rich
red and yellow walls. The ambience was peaceful, and our sever
Miriah was pleasant and nice. This is a good restaurant to grab a
nice but quick lunch – our meal came out in about five minutes,
piping hot with a little bag of chips on the side. All that AND a bag
of chips? Yes indeed.
If your restaurant features some mouthwatering veggie
dishes, we’d like to hear about it! Call Stefanie Godfrey on 898-
