YOUR GUIDE TO PIPE MARKING

WHY IDENTIFY YOUR PIPES?

• It’s the law – The Health & Safety (Signs and Signals) Regulations

1996 Part 3 states that any pipes that transport dangerous

substances must be identifi ed with the appropriate danger

symbol and the name of the substance.

• For extra safety and security – Unmarked pipes and valves

can cause danger to life and infl ict damage to equipment.

Pipe identifi cation is essential for emergency services and

maintenance programs.

• British Standard specifi es the colours and supplementary

information for the identifi cation of pipes conveying fl uids for both

above and below ground installations. This also includes ducts for

ventilation and conduits used for carrying electrical services.

HOW SHOULD YOU IDENTIFY YOUR PIPES?

• All pipes transporting substances must be marked.

• You must also describe the type of hazard by applying the

appropriate label and danger symbol.

• Pipe marking must be colour coded and display the direction

of fl ow on the visible side of the pipe.

• Pipe Markers/colour-coding should be indicated every 6 to 15m,

at junctions, on both sides of valves and on appliances and

bulkheads (see diagram).

Where pipes pass through fl oors & walls, mark both sides
