Celebrating Tessa Clarke

Breeder Profile - Future Sport Horses

Vet Insight - Ovum Pickup

Designed and Produced by

Horse IT Ltd & Solutions Website Design

Printed At Leiston Press, Suffolk

This special edition includes profiles

of all the stallions that will be

appearing at the Stallion Event, our

much anticipated annual showcase of

the best stallions standing in the UK

today. This year’s event will be bigger

and better than ever, with over 80

stallions being presented, including

the welcome return of Big Star, as well

as many other established stallions

and up and coming talent. We are

extremely grateful to Baileys Horse

Feeds and Competition Stallions for

their continued support.

There has never been a better time

to consider our UK based stallions,

and with international show jumpers,

eventers and dressage horses as well

as proven producers of competition

horses at all levels, there is so much

choice for every breeding programme.

In this issue we also meet Julia Hodkin

of Future Sport Horses, who has

developed her own breeding

programme of event horses that are

proving their worth in eventing and

the show ring.

We also celebrate the remarkable

achievements of Tessa Clarke, recently

retired stud manager at West Kington

Stud and pioneer in the collection and

storage of frozen semen. Tessa was

the recipient of the British Breeding

Unsung Hero Award at the Celebration

Ball in November, and then added the

StallionAI Meritoire Lifetime

Achievement award, presented at

the British Horse Foundation Dinner

in London in January. This month’s

veterinary feature comes courtesy

of Dr. Kaatje Ducheyne, PhD, MVSc,

DipECAR, MRCVS, of Sussex Equine

Hospital, who discusses the benefits of

ovum pick up.

We have our regular studbook news

and reports from the disciplines plus a

photo gallery from our inaugural

Celebration Ball in November where

the achievements of Futurity

Champions were celebrated.

Plans are well underway for our series

of events for 2020 with an exciting

line up of international judges,

including the highly respected

Hans-Heinrich Brüning, for the Futurity

Evaluation series, plus the return of

3-5 year old evaluations to provide

a qualification opportunity for the

Equine Bridge. The Bridge itself will

return in October and the much

applauded Celebration Ball is to be

repeated in November. There are

exciting plans for the British Breeding

Members Club, which will host a number

of events including the inaugural

British Breeding Lecture & Symposium.

More to come on this in the next issue.

In this Olympic year, we are looking

forward to reporting on more British

bred success at every level. We have

already seen incredible results in all

three disciplines in recent years, and

with the quality of our breeding, the

dedication and enthusiasm of our

breeders and the talent of our riders,

British bred success is set to increase.

Dankeschön Obituary

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that we announce Dankeschön

tragically passed away in December. He was a movement artist of special

quality and had three outstanding gaits. In 2010 he was the sovereign

70 day Test Winner in Warendorf with a total index of 127.33. Among

other things, he received 9.5 for his outstanding temperament and a 9.0

for rideability, gallop and willingness to perform. In 2012 Dankeschön

participated in the Bundeschampionat of five-year-old dressage horses after

finishing 2nd in the riding horse championship in Lingen as a four-year-old.

He competed succesfully to Intermediare II level in Germany under Henrike

Sommer before he was based in the UK full time. Dankeschön continued

his training towards competing at Grand Prix, thanks to his easy going

temperament and amazing trainability he found the movements easy.

Dankeschön’s descendants have also proved extremely successful in

riding, jumping and dressage tests. His daughter Dancing Magic was an

8.2 best participant in dressage at the mare performance test in Munster

- Handorf in July 2017 and finished second overall. In 2015, he presented

six participants who were awarded the title of State Premium Mare.

Dankeschön descendants also have great success at auction sites. Among

other things, his son Dresscode was sold for €150,000 at the private

auction of Hof Borgmann in June 2018. In 2019, a 2yo son was presented

at the Westphalian Stallion licensing and was one of only 12 stallions to be

licensed with ‘Premium’ status. He was later sold at auction for €100,000,

another Dankeschön descendant reaching over €100k at an auction

site. He has produced several offspring now that have made it to the

Bundeschampionat in both Dressage and Jumping.

His frozen semen is still available at Caunton Manor Stud.

Where are they

now? Futurity

Graduates in

British Dressage

This leads us to a new feature, where

we will be picking up on a selection of

recent BD competition results to see

where our Futurity Graduates are now.

Congratulations are due to WS Be

Mine who gained his first Inter I points

with a win at Onley Grounds on 3rd

December 2019. The 2008 born gelding

by Belissimo M out of a Wolkenstein

mare was ridden by Angharad Harries

who was delighted with the result:

“Be Mine is a lovely character who

tries incredibly hard to please. We

hope to continue up the levels!”

Be Mine was bred by Lizzy Webb

and had been presented as a foal at

Solihull where he received a good first

premium score.

Amour Just Cruising by Amour G had

a busy year in 2019 with Penelope

Graepel. The pair have racked up

some lovely results, finishing the

year with two wins at Novice on

16th November 2019 at Little Mill

Equestrian. The 10-year-old gelding

had been at the Futurity assessments

twice, at Writtle College as a yearling

and two-year-old, each time being

awards a 2nd premium, demonstrating

that the Futurity is excellent at

identifying not only the future Grand

Prix stars, but also reliable horses

for the ambitious amateur wishing to

compete at the lower levels.

Another 10-year-old Futurity graduate

who had a busy and successful 2019 is

the Barclay daughter Barchetta who

won both advanced medium classes

at Radfords Equestrian Centre on 17th

November 2019 with Lucie Dunkeld.

Barchetta was presented at the

Futurity as a foal, two-year-old and

three-year-old, with better results

every time, finishing her assessments

on a high first.

Be Mine with Angharad Harries

Woodlander Donna Summer with Katrina Cantrell

British bred horses excelled at all

levels at the British Dressage Small Tour

Championships, and Keysoe High Profile

Show at The College Equestrian Centre

in Bedfordshire 5th–8th December 2019.

On the first day of the competition, the

Mount St.John bred mare MSJ Furstin

Rosa (Furst Romancier x Conteur) won

at Medium with her rider Emma Woolley,

and Extra Time (Goodtimes x Indorado)

who was bred by Pat Ruck won the Inter

II under the saddle of Lucy Jane Amy. On

Saturday, Abbie Mae Newbury steered

Tantoni Quickstep to victory in the

Novice, and Sunday’s Advanced Medium

class was won by Maddy Frewin on the

Rockstar son Woodlander Rhythm and

Blues, bred by Lynne Crowden.

Addington High Profile Show in January

saw a strong start of the year for

British bred horses. Under the saddle

of Mark Forrest, the Dimaggio son

and Hanoverian licensed stallion GF

Dusautoir convinced with a strong

second place at Advance Medium with

a score of 69.74% only a hair’s breadth

behind first place.

GF Dusautoir as a 3yo at his Futurity evaluation

Photo - Kevin Sparrow

This result was followed by and

excellent third place in the PSG. Bred

by Sandy Senior, Dusautoir had been

a highly successful Futurity candidate

gaining the coveted Elite scores as a foal

as well as a 3-year-old, congratulations!

Madeleine Gardner rode her own bred

AES licensed stallion FHS Diamond in

the Rough by Solitair to come 2nd in

the Advanced Medium class. Originally

bred for eventing with a good dose of

thoroughbred blood, the stallion has

recently been focusing on his dressage

career with very convincing results!

There was reason to celebrate a great

achievement for Futurity Graduate

Woodlander Donna Summer, ridden by

Katrina Cantrell, who came first in the

FEI Inter II class with a mark of 69.96%.

The 15-year-old mare by Woodlander

Del Amitri had been presented at the

Futurity in 2008 where she received a

fantastic Elite score of 9.38

NEWS - FROM THE DISCIPLINES

An incredible 1-2

for Daisy Williams

Daisy Williams made her first time

at Horse of the Year Show one to

remember, taking both first and second

place in the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers

Championship with her two ponies,

Bermudez BDA and King III respectively.

The Lincolnshire-based teenager, who

celebrates her 14th birthday next

week, got an early birthday surprise

when she took to the Andrews Bowen

International Arena on day two at Horse

of the Year Show. As first to jump in

the seven pony jump off, she cleared a

textbook round aboard Bermudez BDA.

The pair set an unbeatable time

of 31.60 seconds, fighting off close

competition from the other riders to

maintain her lead throughout. With

two ponies in the jump off, Daisy was

last to go with her second ride, King III,

and only had herself to beat. Showing

experience beyond her years, Daisy

rode another expertly ridden course

and flew down to the last fence to

finish in 31.67 seconds allowing her to

take that second-place position

With the biggest smile on her face,

Daisy commented afterwards: “I can’t

quite believe that just happened. I was

so nervous going in and I just hoped

for the best. Billy [Bermudez BDA] is

only six years old and hasn’t done many

jump offs and I was surprised how fast

we went. When I went in again with

King, I didn’t even realise that I was in

the lead until I heard the commentator

on my approach to the first fence and I

just couldn’t stop smiling. It is my first

time at HOYS and it is such a dream

come true to even be here, let alone

to win. I came here a few years ago as

a visitor and it just gave me the bug

and motivation to get training with the

ponies. They have both qualified for

the Pony Foxhunter Championship on

Saturday so I can only hope that they

jump just as well in that.”

Both ponies are owned by Daisy’s

mother Jill Williams and are apparently

like chalk and cheese: “Billy gets into

the arena excitable and raring to go,

whereas King is a bit more reserved

and waits for you to tell him what to

do. They are both incredible ponies and

I am so thankful to my trainers Kyle

Hassle and Kelly Aldous for all of their

support.”

Nicole Pavitt makes history

Records were broken on day one at Horse of the Year Show, NEC Birmingham, as

Sussex-based Nicole Pavitt became the first showjumper to win the Senior Newcomers

Championship title for the fourth time. Nicole’s experience showed as she entered

the Andrews Bowen International Arena as second to go in the jump off of the

Connolly’s RED MILLS Senior Newcomers Championship aboard chestnut gelding

Southend. She followed Christopher Smith who set the bar high riding a clear jump

off in a good time with the beautiful grey mare, Hornet. Nicole took several risks with

some tight turns which luckily for her paid off as she came in just inside Christopher’s

time. Despite having two left to jump, the risky turns cost the other riders faults and

they each picked up eight jumping penalties, allowing Nicole to step up to take her

fourth Senior Newcomers title.

Nicole first won the class in 2012 riding Our Duchess, her other wins came in 2014

with Tia Semilly and 2017 with HC Cornet. Speaking of her victory today, Nicole said:

“I watched Chris go just before me and I really thought that he had done enough and

was going to win it. Southend is probably not the fastest, but he has a big stride so

covers the ground easily. I just decided to take some tight turns then I could gain on

him. The horse is relatively inexperienced, he only started his jumping career eight

months ago and I’ve only ridden him a handful of times.”

The 11-year-old British Warmblood is owned by Matt Pike, and with Southend having

unknown breeding, Nicole admits that they had no idea that he was going to turn out

to be such a star. Nicole continues: “He’s done riding club and he has hunted so he

has a varied background, but he just makes it all seem effortless. We have just come

back from two weeks in France where the arenas are very open, adding to that he

has never even jumped indoors before, so I think he had a bit of a shock, but he has

a good head on him. I’m really looking forward to the future with him. Winning any

class at Horse of the Year Show is an amazing feeling and to have won this particular

class four times is a real honour.”

British Eventing have published the sire data analysis

of the 2019 season based on horses registered with

British Eventing in 2019 earning BE Points and which

have pedigree information on our database.

They have published three ranking tables:

• Top 50 rankings for Sires of All registered horses

• Top 50 of Sires of Young Horses aged between 5 & 8

• Top 50 Sires of British Bred horses of all ages.

The last ranking is a new initiative to allow British

breeders a view on the successes of Sires and their

offspring in Eventing.

Also new for this year is the column ‘Registered

offspring’ which shows how many horses in total

were registered in the season - this allows the

reader to take a more informed view on the

rankings.

Topping the Top 50 Sires (All horses) is the German

bred stallion OBOS Quality 004. He had a total of 99

horses registered with BE in 2019 who earned him a

total of 789 BE points.

His top earner was MGH GRAFTON STREET owned

by Jonathan and Jane Clarke and ridden by Pippa

Funnel with their star performance being the win at

the 2019 Land Rover Burghley Horse Trails.

BROOKFIELD QUALITY, owned by John and Chloe

Perry and Alison Swinburn, also earned OBOS

Quality 004 a good number of BE points in 2019, the

highlight of their season was winning Hartpury 3star

with Piggy March.

Second in the Top 50 Sires was ARS Vivendi (82

offspring registered) whose leading points earner

was Santiago Bay, owned by Caroline Teltsch and

competed by Gemma Tattersall. A seventh place at

the Land Rover Burghley Horse trials as well as two

wins at Jardy and Arville, proves 2019 was a very

successful season for this combination.

Grafenstolz (99), himself a Young Horse World

Champion at Le Lion, is in 3rd place. This popular

sire also tops the new British bred league.

His top earner is the British bred Grafennacht,

competed by William Fox Pitt and owned by Susan

Eggleton, herself a competitor who competed his

dam Nachtigal up to 3star.

Probably one of the biggest

moving horses EVER bred at

Woodlander...all the power

and the glory. This is a loose

and supple youngster with a

phenomenal canter, a huge walk

and a big and expressive trot.

Not only does he impress, but

he brings a totally convincing

pedigree with him. His sire Don

Frederic combines the dressage

Grand Prix blood of Donnerhall,

Consul and the powerful

Wolkentanz.

Don Frederic was the Champion

of his licensing and is now

one of the most talked about

young dressage performers

in Germany. Certainly, this

is a return to strength and

substance. His performance test

did not disappoint and with a

9.75 for ridability, he shone. His

dam, Real Perfect was a pick

super foals for us before going

Studbook - NEWS

Future Hepsilon

Welcomes

Exceptional

Young

Stallions

This year’s tour of winter stallion

gradings brought us some truly

exceptional young stallions, with many

owners braving the terrible weather

and widespread flooding to attend one

of our public venues across the country.

It was all worth it in the end, as we

met some wonderful horses that make

for an exciting future for the studbook

and our breeders.

Fantastic Jumping Blood

for Eventers

Our stallions tour saw some exciting

new blood presented for eventing

breeding, with a strong emphasis on

exceptional jumping lines to enhance

scope, power and technique. In Future

Hepsilon we met a striking grey colt,

owned and bred by Julia Hodkin of

Future Sports Horses who are making

a name for themselves breeding and

standing outstanding Eventing stallions.

Future Hepsilon is a son of the famous

Upsilon, whose competition career

speaks for itself, and who was recently

awarded the coveted accolade of

“Best Sire of Young Eventers” in

France. The mother brings the

important influence of the great

Heraldik XX on an outstanding

damline that has produced multiple

international 1.60m horses in the

last generations, as well as being the

motherline of exceptional stallions like

Stolzenfels and Embassy II, who gained

more than 1mio Euros in prize winnings

in his awe-inspiring career. Future

Hepsilon certainly lived up to the

high expectations raised by his dream

pedigree and impressed the judges

with correctness of conformation and

exceptional balance and elasticity in all

of his gaits. Congratulations to Julia for

this excellent addition to her increasing

list of talented AES Licensed Stallions.

Another young powerhouse was John

Chambers’s Venterprise, bred and

owned by Springfield Stud. After the

very sad loss of their young stallion

Spring’s Spirit, it was lovely to meet a

new hope for the future in this son of

the famous Voltaire. This young stallion

offers a good dose of thoroughbred

lines in a compact and powerful

package. Venterprise was certainly

very keen to show off to his admirers

and exhibited a very good jumping

technique with quick reactions. The

stallion is produced carefully with

the ultimate goal of an international

competition career, and we wish

him and his owners all success in the

future.

Exciting Raw Talent

The AES Gradings attracted again a

fantastic range of new showjumping

talent with scope, technique, attitude

and pedigrees to match, offering some

interesting and valuable new bloodlines

to British breeders. It was a pleasure

to assess Fortunato vh Beeckhof Z, a

young colt owned by Tina and Eddie

of Foxisle Stud who offers exceptional

breeding (Futurore Di Villagana X

Numero Uno x Latano I). This charming

young horse convinced the judges with

a large frame, long lines and great

athleticism. With an exceptional canter

and impressive jumping technique with

scope to match we very much look

forward to seeing the first crop of this

young stallion’s foals.

46 | BRITISH BREEDER

Studbook - NEWS

Another stand-out candidate was the

Freeman VDL son King Albert. This

very attractive young black stallion is

owned by Jill Williams and was bred

by The Swaanen in Holland. He showed

excellent technique and aptitude over

jumps, and impressed with beautiful

type and a very good trot. We are

looking forward to seeing him out

competing this year, and we wish his

owners and riders much success and

enjoyment with this gorgeous horse.

All the way up in Scotland we

inspected the athletic and promising

colt Argenteus who was bred by

Jeanette Lewis and is owned by Aileen

Stormonth. Argenteus had been the

highest scoring show jumping yearling

at the prestigious 2018 Futurities, an

accolade he achieved in front of a

panel of 4 independent international

evaluators. At his AES inspection, this

beautiful young stallion convinced with

excellent conformation and soundness

and expressive, loose and elastic gaits,

with the walk and canter particular

highlights. Combining the blood of

the legends Argento and Baloubet Du

Rouet, this very modern, talented

young horse is certainly one to watch

for the future. Many congratulations to

all at Xanstorm.

Elegance and Talent for an

Exciting Dressage Future

The first of this winter’s crop of newly

licensed dressage stallions was Emily

Ivins’s beautiful Ketcher B, boasting a

dream pedigree in the world famous

stallions Negro, Stedinger and De Niro.

This young stallion did not disappoint

our high expectations, with near

perfect conformation and a truly

outstanding walk. This exquisite young

horse will be a great addition to British

dressage breeding. Congratulations to

Emily and her team on this

well-deserved result.

A valuable addition to the AES dressage

stallions portfolio comes in the

Bernay son Bowie, bred at the famous

Woodlander Stud and presented by

Bianca Hill of Penmawddwy Stud.

Through the motherline, Bowie brings

the interesting influence of the

Londonderry son Londontime with

the great Weltmeyer behind. He is a

beautiful and expressive stallion who

convinces with long lines, an attractive

large frame, and bags of presence.

Certainly a horse to watch for the

future, offering a compelling cocktail

of proven and valuable bloodlines to

the discerning breeder.

After the great quality of offspring

produced by her AES graded stallion

Devivio, we were excited to meet

Claire Cooper-Wyatt’s next young

dressage stallion in her own bred So

Very Vivid who brings a great cocktail

Woodlander Bowie

So Very Vivid

of Dutch lines in Bodyguard Moorland

on an Osmium x Jazz mother. This very

attractive black stallion convinced with

elegance and poise, and a wonderful,

calm and gentle presence. We are

looking forward to watching this great

partnership as they progress into the

sport.

Something a little different was Bianca

Hill’s Ynyslyns Orlando, a very powerful

and expressive Welsh Section D stallion

who brings the added benefit of coming

in a cream coat which is of great

interest to those wishing to breed a

more exotic colour. Orlando is currently

produced by Wayne Garrick who is

focusing on his dressage training and

on teaching him to use his considerable

power and expression. One of the most

impressive features of this interesting

AES Mare Gradings (above & below)

Kind Albert

young stallion is his jump, which is

showing exceptional scope, matched

with excellent attitude and technique.

In fact, at his grading he insisted on

jumping the top of the wings, which

is rather impressive, given his smaller

size!

The AES Public Gradings will continue

in February 2020, where we are looking

forward to meeting further stars of

the future and great additions to our

diverse and select stallions portfolio

offering a great choice to our breeders.

2019 British

Hanoverian

Awards.

The British Hanoverian Horse Society

recently attended the British Horse

Foundation Awards Dinner 2020 which

was held at the Grange City Hotel in

London on Saturday 11 January 2020.

Chairman of the BHHS, Katy

Holder-Vale, presented three awards

which were to the most successful

British Bred Hanoverian in Dressage,

Show Jumping and Eventing in 2019.

The Dressage Award was presented

to Sarah and Tony Pidley who bred

the thirteen-year-old Duke of Britain

(Dimaggio x Rubinstein). Duke of

Britain is owned by Hof Kasselmann

and ridden by Frederic Wandres.

Frederic Wandres and Duke of

Britain have been a combination

for about three years, first starting

in national Prix St Georges events

before working their way up to Grand

Prix level. Caroline Ironside from

MFS Stud received the award for the

most successful show jumping BHHS

horse in 2019 with MFS W. Diva Rosa

(Wallenberg x Emilion). Caroline

travelled from Scotland to receive

the award and said...

“We were absolutely thrilled

to have received the award

from the British Hanoverian

Horse Society for MFS W.Diva

Rosa. Back in 2008 the year

she was born, the Futurity

Series came to Aberdeen. To

help publicise the Futurity

we had the BBC1 Programme

“Landward” came to the Stud

to film our foals and to cover

the Futurity. The producers

wanted to follow one foal,

and they picked Diva. She

was videoed at the Stud and

we were interviewed about

our aspirations for her, we

said at the time that we

hoped she would become an

International Showjumper and

had fingers crossed that she

would, one day, maybe get to

an Olympics. She was awarded

a Higher First Premium and

qualified for the Elite Show.”

50 | BRITISH BREEDER

Studbook - NEWS

Diva is now owned by Al Asayl Show

Jumping who are based in the UAE,

and also has a very talented rider in

Swedish International Annika Axxelson.

Caroline continue to say that...

“we are amazed that our

predictions for her have come

true regarding becoming a top

International Showjumper.

This would not have been

accomplished without her

having the most amazing

owners. It is fantastic for British

Breeding to see British bred

horses at the top of their sport,

promoting just what British

Breeders are accomplishing.

Diva is truly International,

bred in Scotland, registered

with a British Studbook, owned

by people in the United Arab

Emirates and show jumped by

a Swedish International. How

amazing is that!”

The BHHS Eventing award was

presented to Superstition II

(Satisfaction x Cordalame).

Superstition II was bred by Eva Meier

and is now owned by Mandy Gray and

Harry Meade.

Presenting the awards, Katy

Holder-Vale said “these are such

fantastic results for our British

Hanoverians breeders who were, once

again, internationally successful in

2019.

British Hanoverians are going from

strength to strength and it is great to

see that we are breeding top horses for

all disciplines.”

Sandlings Outstanding Account competing in the

138cm Bronze League Final at BSNC 2019.

It is always encouraging to see British

Riding Ponies excelling in a variety of

disciplines and 2019 saw the studbook

successfully represented in pony

racing, mounted games, dressage,

eventing and show jumping. This winter

a number of British Riding Ponies have

been competing with BS looking to gain

their championship qualifications for

2020.

Sandlings Outstanding Account

(Westacre Comic Opera – Coppicebrook

Cascade (Ninfield Millionair) bred by

Mrs Kelly) has had a number of wins

this Autumn and Winter building on

their appearance earlier in the year

at the BS National Championships in

the 138cm Bronze League. This 16

year old mare has been a consistent

school mistress over the years to a

number of young children. She is a

daughter of Westacre Comic Opera

who was very successful in the show

ring and sired RIHS & HOYS ponies

as well as a number of good jumping

ponies including Sandlings Surreal and

Sandlings Surrealist.

Just starting her BS career is Trellech

Blithe Spirit (Kilvington Scoundrel –

Trellech Spirit of Spring (Royal Ensign)

bred by Mrs Gould) winning at Kings

Sedgemoor ridden by Jack Teague. The

same family own another Riding Pony

– Goresmead Galante (Ainsty Musical

Dream – Bradmore Tango (Bradmore

Mannikin) who has successfully raced

and evented in the past. The consistent

Comberton Carina (Coveham Animation

– Comberton Cristabelle (Cusop

Disciplin) bred by Mrs Byrd) has been

jumping in 1.10m open classes over

the winter and has qualified for the 1m

Restricted Championship Final. Fairley

Picador (Fairley Puccini – Fairley Coral

(Fairley Tempest) bred by Mr Careless)

jumped in the Pony Discovery Final at

the National Championships and has

already started to collect the double

clears needed to qualify again next

year.

Another British Riding Pony with their

second round qualification in the bag

is Lindeth Preacher (Lindeth Quandry

– Yealand Praise (Botingelle Swansong)

bred by Emma Boardman) who has

his Pony Discovery clears and has also

qualified for the Blue Chip Winter

Champs in the Sapphire Championship.

The 10 year old was only registered

in Autumn 2019 with BS so has a very

bright future with his young rider Grace

Shuddall-Hughes. Preacher is from the

direct motherline of the top broodmare

Yealand Dreams, who was the dam of

leading sire Yealand Night Owl among

others.

Forgeland Tiger Tot (Kilvington

Scoundrel – Graceful Tiger (Java Tiger)

bred by Mrs Jackson) continues to

impress with Katie Corteen by winning

her last outing of the season at Oasby

after competing in their first CCI***

events earlier in the year. Katie was

nominated for the Pikeur Amateur Rider

of the Year at the Horse and Hound

awards so we are looking forward to

seeing the pair out in 2020 as they are

now qualified for 4 star!

A pony who has had success at pony

club and riding club level has been

getting some very good results this

winter in BE Arena Eventing. This is

Charlotte Taylor’s Wycroft Partytime

(Rendene Romany Fiddler – Damask

Rose of Rendene (Rendene Rising

Sun) bred by Mr Pitman). His dam is a

granddaughter of Wembley champion

Rosevean Gypsy Moth who also had a

very successful career in hand as well

as producing top stallion sons.

In the dressage arena Helsington

Secret Message (Mount Holly – Hollyhill

Royal Secret (Kilvington Scoundrel)

bred by Mr & Mrs Knipe) and owner

Karen Bunning started their affiliated

journey scoring their first victories at

Myerscough. The very consistent pony

Chiddock Hour Glass (Chiddock Time

Limit – True Illusion, bred by Sykes &

Davies) has gone on loan to young rider

Megan Field and is already scoring in

excess of 75%.

In order to offer further support to

Riding Pony breeders, the NPS has

launched a new Breeders membership

for 2020. This entitles the member to

receive discounted foal registration

rates, public liability and personal

accident insurance, a copy of the

acclaimed Annual Review and breeder

specific newsletters.

To find out more about this new

membership option please contact

Foal Grading

This year SHB(GB) will be introducing

a programme of foal grading. In the

first year we will offer several dates

at venues around the country. It is

intended that foal grading will take

place alongside mare grading at

established venues albeit owners are

most welcome to bring offspring out

of any previously SHB(GB) graded or

ungraded mare. Foals that receive a

mark of more than 8 will be awarded a

premium, which will subsequently be

recorded in the SHB(GB) passport.

The intention is that this will highlight

quality foals that are considered by

the studbook to have good sporting

potential and high value. Premium foals

will receive a rosette and at the end of

the year there will be an award to the

breeders of the top three foals.

We know that many breeders are keen

to have their foals assessed so we hope

that you will support this initiative.

Dates and venues will be announced

later in the year.

Welcome Universal

SHB(GB) is delighted to welcome

another Thoroughbred stallion into

the Studbook. Congratulations to the

connections of Universal who was

approved and life graded at the end of

last year. The 11-year-old is by Dubawi

(Dubai Millennium-Deploy) out of

Winesong by Giants Causeway. Dubawi,

who stands at Dalham Hall Stud is

the only British sire to have sired 100

Group Winners and is the sire of many

successful horses such as Too Darn

Hot, Monterosso, Lucky Nine and The

Revenant. Whilst in training Universal

claimed seven wins and four places

from 19 runs. He went to stud in 2014

standing four seasons at Yorton Farm

in Shropshire. He has already produced

winners from his first crop notably

Irish-bred Clap Your Hands (ex Oratorio)

and the French-bred filly Vereina (ex

Kizitca). He is now available to sport

horse and thoroughbred mares at the

Newmarket-based Groomsbridge Stud.

The newly graded thoroughbred

Universal who stands at

Groomsbridge Stud’

Living the Dream

Congratulations to Mark and Angela

Chamberlayne the breeders of the

highest placed SHB(GB) registered

horse in the 2019 international

eventing ranking as published by the

World Breeding Federation for Sport

Horses (WBFSH). Angela and Mark

bred the lovely grey Dreamliner who

this year, ridden by Oliver Townend,

finished the season in second place

in the CCI4*-L at Ballindenisk and

was 8th in the CCI4* championship

class for 8/9 year-old horses at the

SsangYong Blenheim international

by the successful sire, the Elite

the mare Doff Gudanov who was by

the Thoroughbred Baryshnikov and

was out of Bairn Free (who was also

the dam of the equine super-star,

three-time Burghley winner Avebury).

Doff Gudanov produced two younger

siblings the full brother Globemaster

competing with Clare Chamberlayne

at international intermediate level

and a younger full sister Starliner also

competing with Clare at the lower

levels.

SHB(GB) finished the year 10th in

the WBFSH studbook rankings. While

Studbook - NEWS

Looking back

to 2019

Looking back to 2019, the

Trakehner breed worldwide

showcased the versatility of the

breed with victories at the highest

level. Looking ahead to the New

Year, the focus of many of those

top competitors will be the Tokyo

Olympics. We expect to see Jessica

Von Bredow-Werndl on the German

team with her incredible mare TSF

Dalera BB (Easy Game x Handryk).

This winter has already seen the

pair record victory at the Stuttgart

World Cup qualifier posting an

incredible 88.44% score.

Also looking a very strong candidate

for Olympic selection for the USA is

eventer Boyd Martin and Tsetserleg

(Windfall x Buddenbrock) having

rounded off 2019 with the gold

medal in the Pan American games.

Boyd has spoken publicly of his

love of the Trakehner breed as the

ultimate event horse, combining

blood, athleticism and great heart.

It is likely the pair will be aiming

for the 5 star at Kentucky in April

where they came a close second in

2019.

On home soil, Horse and Hound

nominated Sonnar Murray Brown

and his 13 year old gelding

Erlentanz (Latimer x Benz) as

ones to watch for 2020. On their

first outing together since Sonnar

took back the reins from Charlotte

Dujardin, they convincingly won

the Grand Prix at Hartpury with

74.4%. They will be really pushing

for a team place at Tokyo and

certainly will be representing Great

Britain at international competition

through the year.

The Trakehners UK committee

are already making plans for the

2020 season. Sadly the annual

show is not yet attracting a large

enough volume of entries to cover

www.trakehners.uk.com

the costs of venue hire and flying

over an international judge from

the Verband. Therefore in 2020

there will be a regional tour to

allow mare and foal inspections

to take place whilst minimising

the distance members will need

to travel their horses. Full details

of the tour dates will be available

on our FaceBook page and on the

website in due course. If anyone

has a colt or stallion they wish to

put forward for stallion licensing,

then please get in contact so

we can make the appropriate

arrangements.

We will also have graders available

to attend some dates on the

Elite Foal Tour or the Futurity if

anyone is considering taking their

Trakehner foal to either event and

would like a studbook evaluation.

Please get in contact if there are

specific dates at either of these

events that you are planning on

taking a Trakehner foal to.

There are encouraging signs that

breeders are actively looking for

Trakehner mares to add to their

breeding herd and that many are

looking at breeding pure breds from

those mares. As a small studbook it

is important that we keep breeding

and reminding competitors that the

Trakehner is their perfect option

for sport. If you are looking for a

pure bred mare to buy or lease for

the 2020 breeding season, please

contact one of the committee and

we may be able to help you find

your perfect partner.

British

Bred and

Badminton

Bound

In every generation there is a little girl

who achieves her dream of riding at

CCI5*; not necessarily from a huge yard

of sponsored horses but with one horse

produced and funded by herself.

The story of Sharon Polding and her

British Bred mare Findonfirecracker is

this very story.

Sharon, a 48 year old mother of one

and very much full time employee of

Vodafone’s Global Enterprise Division,

is Badminton 2020 bound with her

chestnut mare, Findonfirecracker.

Known as Dizz at home, Sharon saw this

striking but compact chestnut mare

being born and promptly bought her

as a foal to run alongside another foal

that she had bred.

Sharon and Dizz qualified for Badminton

with clears at Hartpury CCI4*-S and

Chatsworth CCI4*-S and then went to

Germany coming 18th at Luhmuhlen

CCI5*-L .

Sharon takes pride in her preparation

of Dizz being slow and measured and

not having put her under pressure in

the competitive young horse classes.

Sharon and Findonfirecracker “Dizz” at Bramham in 2018

66 | BRITISH BREEDER

Feature - ARTICLE

When Dizz was 4 Sharon had her

daughter and so did very little with her

that year and only did a little bit with

her as a 5 year old. Dizz didn’t really

start eventing properly with Sharon

until she was a 6 year old.

Their story is all the more incredible

as Sharon, who only competes this one

horse, has less cross-country runs in an

entire season than a professional event

rider could have in a single weekend.

In 2019 Sharon and Dizz completed just

8 events, and so it gives more credence

to Sharon’s ability as a jockey and

Dizz’s bravery as a mare with so very

few runs when competing at this level.

Findonfirecracker’s sire line is nothing

but jumping bred. By the KWPN Jump

stallion, Zenturio, (51.18% TB) and

out of a mare called Lightfield High

Rocks who has a relatively un-recorded

pedigree. Zenturio’s sire line goes back

to the Holstein jumping legend, Ramiro

Z, and has the full TB, Apple King, also

on his sire line. Findonfirecracker is

recorded as having 25.59% TB but this

figure is misleading due to the absence

of data on her dam’s line.

Sharon knew she had a star on

her hands when Dizz was 6 years

old. In that season she won the

RC Championships and gave her a

phenomenal ride around the 6 year old

Championships at Osberton. Wind the

clock forwards and Findonfirecracker

now has 353 British Eventing points,

was 24th at Pau in October 2018, 29th

at Bramham 2018, and 24th in the 8 &

9 year old class at Blenheim in 2016.

I asked Sharon what she wanted to

achieve out of 2020 she said...

“to complete

Badminton,

anything else would

be a bonus as it is

the ambition of a

lifetime. I am a

one horse owning

amateur and I just

want Dizz to shine”

Sharon does have Embryo Transfer set

on her sights for this little gold dust

mare. She is yet to decide which sire to

use but will keep jumping pedigrees at

the heart of her breeding programme.

We all wish Sharon and Dizz the very

best of luck at Badminton in 2020.

Tessa Clarke

Unsung Hero

Tessa Clarke was the worthy recipient of the British Breeding

Unsung Hero Award, presented at the British Breeding

Celebration Ball in November, and then received the Stallion

AI Meritoire Lifetime Achievement Award at the British horse

Foundation Dinner in January.

Tessa Clarke started as an eventing student with Lady Hugh

Russell at Wylye and undoubtedly the high standards she

learnt there stayed with her throughout her career.

She then joined Jennie Loriston-Clarke as assistant Stud

Manager at Catherston Stud in 1980 and it wasn’t long

before she and Jennie went to Newmarket to study AI under

Professor Twink Allan at the Equine Fertility Unit, pioneering

its use in sport horse breeding in this country, and a lifelong

passion was born.

Catherston Stud soon became one of the first facilities to

offer transported chilled semen with it’s first consignment

going to the Isle of Man in an Equitainer. Until the

mid-eighties, AI for breeding horses was little used in the

UK, mainly due to the predominance of the Thoroughbred

industry where artificial breeding methods were forbidden

for racehorses. This was in contrast with breeders in Europe

and the USA where the technique was widely used, especially

among Sporthorse breeders.

Whilst at the Equine Fertility Unit, Tessa was introduced to

Martin Boyle MRCVS, who was particularly interested in the

Stallion, its semen and how to preserve it for more than 24

hours and this sparked an interest and friendship which has

lasted ever since.

When Catherston moved homes, Tessa decided it was also

time to move on after 12 years. She completed an MBA in

Business Management before joining the Holderness-Roddams

at a fledgling West Kington Stud in 1995. Here she was able

to expand on her dream of greater use of frozen semen and,

in collaboration with Martin Boyle of Stallion Reproduction

Services, West Kington Stud became a DEFRA approved centre

from which frozen semen could be exported worldwide

turning it into the highly respected organisation it is today.

She now retires from 25 seasons at West Kington Stud,

where she will continue to consult, and where she has been

responsible for over 1250 Stallion Visits from numerous native

and foreign breeds, including many Rare Breeds, both big and

small, and for over 750 foals born.

Professor Twink Allen paid tribute to the enormous

contribution to British Breeding Tessa has made.

“The retirement of Tessa Clarke is indeed a sad day for British

sport horse breeding. Her employment for many years as

Breeding Manager at Tim and Jane Holderness-Rodham’s West

Kington Stud in Gloucestershire has driven that excellent and

forward thinking establishment to the fore in British sport

horse breeding. Together with equine veterinary expert,

Martin Boyle MRCVS, she has pioneered the collection and

deep freezing of stallion semen from significant numbers

of sport horse and other stallions and its widescale and

successful use to impregnate mares throughout Britain and in

overseas countries as diverse and widespread as Kenya and

New Zealand. As a highly competent horsewoman who should

have been a scientist, she quickly and readily grasped the

necessities of careful and thoughtful collection and handling

of semen from stallions and the need for rigid discipline and

attention to detail when freezing and thawing it prior to its

insemination into oestrous mares. This, in turn, put West

Kington Stud well and justifiably into the lead in this fast

developing field. Tessa has indeed been a great innovator

and boon to sport horse breeding and she will be very hard

to replace. We all wish her long life, good health and much

happiness in her very well earned retirement”.

Tessa’s knowledge and expertise in the breeding world is

widely recognised. She has lectured and spoken at numerous

seminars and conferences both here and abroad on the use

of AI and frozen semen in breeding horses stressing the high

standards essential to its success.

Always keen to help, Tessa is an absolute font of knowledge

and is particularly passionate about our native Rare Breeds.

She has never shied away from helping numerous breeders,

students and interested parties in their various breeding

projects both here and overseas, eager to pass on her huge

knowledge of all aspects of equine breeding. An expert in her

field, she has helped several people set up studs or projects

such as, most recently, the Siria Stud in Kenya, and helped

students with dissertations or research papers for their

Diplomas or Degrees.

We are delighted to hear that Tessa has no intention of

retiring from the breeding scene altogether as she hopes to

continue her involvement in the industry.

A Vision of

the FUTURE

Future Sport Horses have enjoyed

one of their most successful seasons

yet, culminating in winning both the

Futurity National Foal Champion and

Elite Foal Tour National Eventing

Champion with Future Classic Pleasure,

and Champion Mare with Future

Class Act at the British Breeding

Championship Show. At the British

Show Horse Association Championship

Show Future Sport Horses had five

class winners, two champions and one

reserve champion all sired by Future

Illusion. They had the most wins of any

exhibitor at the National Hunter Show

with five broodmares and five foals.

Julia Hodkin is a bright and bubbly

blond who enjoys her horses but takes

her breeding seriously. Her passion

started at a young age, when at 6

years old she fell in love with the pony

pulling the fruit and veg cart. Bribery

was involved when she persuaded her

non-horsey mother to let her have

riding lessons in return for practicing

her piano, and she was soon hacking

miles to shows. She enjoyed some

success locally and Lady Crawshaw

asked her to ride her children’s ponies

to keep them going and have them

ready for the holidays.

When Julia headed to University, she

rode on the university team, but took

a break from horses when she started

work.

The break did not last and at 26

years old she bought her first horse,

a thoroughbred mare called Classic

Fayre. They competed at shows but

Julia was plagued with back pain – the

result of a car accident when she was

21 – and she was forced to stop riding.

Future Illusion

She decided to put the mare in foal

and chose The Outlaw, by Criminal Law,

who was standing at Louella Stud and is

also the damsire of Tiger Attack. The

resulting filly was Future Illicit Affair.

The mare and foal were kept at a livery

yard which was not ideal when it came

to weaning and the filly was nearly lost

following an accident. But the foal

went on to success, culminating with

champion sport horse broodmare at the

National Hunter Show, and Julia was

hooked.

Her next move was to put the young

mare in foal to Fleetwater Opposition

and the resulting colt was Future

Illusion, now a life approved stallion by

the AES and life graded with SHB(GB).

He has proved hugely versatile with

success in his own right with multiple

county championship wins in the show

ring, British Eventing to novice level

with Jeanette Breakwell, and British

Dressage regional finalist with many

wins at elementary level. He has

been chosen by many knowledgeable

breeders and Julia is very proud that

he was used by H M The Queen on her

HOYS mare, Stardust. The progeny

is already a multiple county show

champion in hand and will be brought

out by Katie Jerram under saddle this

season. Future Illusion has also sired

multiple successful 3* eventers, BYEH

and Badmington Grass Roots Finalists.

“I never set out to have

stallions, but it has just

evolved”, explains Julia, who

can remember making a stud

on a piece of hardboard as

a child, with fake grass and

hedges and plastic horses.

There were only 4 colours

of plastic horse, so I painted

them with model paint to

make them different, and

I used to keep a book with

a page for each of their

breeding – so you could say I

started out breeding plastic

horses!”

70 | BRITISH BREEDER

Feature - ARTICLE

Julia has developed a sophisticated

system of weighting based on the

performance and achievements of

horses she is considering for breeding.

After her first foal, she bought a

mare that had been ridden by Andrew

Nicholson. “It is so important to

consider the achievements not just

of the dam, but also of any siblings

and previous progeny. I give them

all a score and the higher the result

the higher the predictability of

performance being passed through the

generations. If they are performing

well, then the genetics are there to

produce a successful offspring”, says

Julia. “The most important thing

is what they pass on in their DNA.

When you pay your stud fee, you

are not buying the stallion, you are

buying what he produces. I believe

that the biggest pillar in breeding is

predictability, and I am trying to stack

the odds in my favour to produce a

decent athlete”.

“Athleticism is fundamental for

any job, but it is only good if the

conformation is good enough to

withstand it, especially in eventing. I

have two big ‘no-nos’ and they are

long pasterns and offset knees – both

indicate to me that the horse is not

going to stay sound. My type is a

riding horse model. I am very fond

of blood horses as they have quick

reflexes, amazing athleticism, quality

and elegance and are light across

the ground. Eventing is a sport of 3

disciplines and the challenge is to

breed something that will go double

clear without compromising the

speed or obedience in dressage. An

athlete has got to be trainable – talent

without trainability is dangerous. It

is a bit like baking a cake – you need

the ingredients of jump, movement,

temperament, gallop and stamina and

you have got to get the right measure

of each.

“Another pillar of my breeding policy

is that you can breed an ‘end product’

– which is aimed to compete at the

top level, or you can breed a ‘stage

product’, bred specifically to help

get that right mix of blood into the

breeding programme. Sometimes the

horses you breed to compete are very

different to the ones bred for breeding.

I have bred some because I want their

genetics and they have never had a

saddle.”

An example of her ‘end product’

is Future Gravitie who is forming a

fabulous partnership with young event

rider, Taggy Forrester-Bennett, getting

to intermediate level in just 2 seasons.

Julia insists that you have to look at

both phenotype and genotype, and

do your research. Another way she

has honed her breeding programme

is to look carefully at what she has

produced. “Recognising which mares

are producing the best offspring is

important so that you can apply the

same principles again, and if they

produce something average you can

try again with a different stallion to

try to improve the weak trait. But if

mares produce offspring that are in the

bottom quartile of the analysis more

than once, then you need to think

of moving them out of your breeding

programme and find them another job.

It may seem harsh, but you need to be

clear about your objectives.

Trainability is key and I always try to

breed horses with the temperament to

do another job”, she says.

Future Gravitas

Future Gravitie and Lara Chepstow XC Novice 2019

Future Gold Digger

Future Hepsilon

As a result of this breeding policy, Julia

now stands five homebred stallions.

“Future Illusion really came about

by accident. I was initially trying to

breed a foal for me to ride, but friends

encouraged me to get him out showing

and not to geld him. I knew that if I

was going to keep him entire he had to

show that he was better than his peers.

I was a complete amateur, but at the

National Hunter Show we won the Sport

Horse Foal, the Novice Hunter (showing

the mare with her foal at foot), and

Champion Foal. So he kept his crown

jewels! He went on to win hack, riding

horse, sport horse and hunter classes

at county level before he was 5 years

old, and has competed successfully in

eventing and dressage. He has now

sired numerous county Champions,

has offspring competing across the

disciplines and was the best British

bred sire across all disciplines for

two years running in the Futurity sire

rankings.

In December 2018 Future Illusion (main

image) fractured his hock so badly it

was inoperable. He was in intensive

care for 3 months but it healed without

surgery and he is now walking out in

hand. Last year only frozen semen was

available, but it is hoped to collect

from him again this year.

Future Gravitas is a stronger sort and is

ideal to put on TB mares. He went to

JP Sheffield and jumped double clears

at 2* level, as well as getting to the

National Dressage Championships with

Eliza Stoddart. Future Gravitas sired

Future Class Act, who was Supreme

Champion in hand Sports Horse at the

National HUnter Show and National

Futurity Mare Champion for 2 years,

as well as successful progeny in British

Dressage and the show ring. Mary King

chose him for Kings Temptress and has

produced Kings Cyrus.

Future Gold Digger held the highest

Futurity eventing score for five years

with 9.25, and has produced Future

Guilty Secret, who in turn produced

Future Guilty Pleasure – our third

stallion who was champion of the AES

stallion licencing in 2018 as a two year

old.

Juswith Genoa was only 15.2hh and

did not have a competition record,

but as the mother of Winsome Adante,

and full sister to Juswith Ginny, who is

competing at advanced level, she was

already proven and produced Future

Gravitas and Future Gold Digger.

“You can’t shy away from

scrutiny, and for us the

Futurity evaluations provide

the checks and balances. It is

good to have an independent

third party to give feedback.

I have always done my own

thing and have never been

swayed by fashion. Some

worked well, and some

haven’t, but breeding is

nature and there are bound

to be some disappointments.

The feedback is the most

important part for me and I

always want to know why they

like or don’t like something.”

“Future Prophecy is a purpose bred TB

stallion. His granddam had won over

1 mile 4 furlongs and his dam had a

good pedigree and the most incredible

movement. I bred her to Hand In Glove

and got a filly, Future Golden Glove, a

good example of a ‘stage mare’, and

then to Power Blade, and we got the

colt we wanted for breeding – Future

Prophecy.

Julia then loaned a daughter of

Heraldik, who was herself a jumper

(decended from the same dam line as

the 1mEuro winning GP Showjumper,

Embassy II) who had already bred 2

international eventers. She bred her

with Upsilon and produced Future

Hepsilon, now licenced with the AES

and the 5th stallion standing at Future

Sport Horses.

There are currently seven in foal mares

at Future Sport Horses, all of which are

homebred except one, Miss Sky Port, a

full sister to Michael Ryan’s 5* eventer,

Fernhill Skyport, and bought in foal to

Billy Congo. “She has a pedigree to die

for and already has successful progeny.

She will add another set of genetics

to our breeding programme and I can

breed her to any of my stallions”,

explains Julia.

Julia’s breeding programme is certainly

paying off. Five generations of breeding

show how important it is to have

predictability and to use line breeding

and with the next generation on the

way, there is a lot to look forward to.

Feature - VET INSIGHT

Is ovum pick up (OPU),

the future of horse breeding?

In the past decades there have been

tremendous advances in equine

breeding technology. Most mares

are now inseminated via artificial

insemination (AI) which not only

reduced the chance on transmitting

diseases and breeding injuries but also

made stallions available all over the

world. Especially the introduction of

frozen semen facilitated distribution

of semen and availability of stallions’

genetics even after his death. Another

big change has been the introduction of

embryo transfer (ET). With ET we refer

to the technique where an embryo is

flushed out of the uterus of a biological

dam (ET-donor) and transferred into

the uterus of a recipient mare. This

happens 7 or 8 days after insemination

of the donor mare. The recipient will

carry the embryo to term and raise

the foal as if it was her own. Donorrecipient

mare synchronisation, i.e.

both mares ovulated around the same

time, is paramount for the success

of ET. This will guarantee that the

transferred embryo will find a similar

uterine environment, essential for

embryo survival. ET has several

advantages: (1) it allows the mare to

produce offspring whilst continuing her

sportive career, (2) produce offspring of

mares with fertility issues, (3) produce

multiple embryos per season.

In recent years we have gone a

step further in applying assisted

reproductive technologies with

the introduction of test-tube foals

produced by a combination of two

techniques; Ovum Pick Up (OPU) and

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection

(ICSI). OPU, also known as oocyte

aspiration, is the procedure where

follicles are aspirated in order to

recover the oocyte (egg or ovum) they

contain. Women undergoing IVF require

multiple hormone injections prior

the procedure. However, in mares no

hormonal stimulation is needed. Before

scheduling an OPU-appointment, the

ovaries of the mares are assessed at

home to determine if she is a suitable

candidate. The ideal moment to

perform the procedure is when the

mare has a minimum of 15 follicles of

1cm or larger. If there are not enough

follicles present during this scan, the

ovaries are reassessed 3-4 weeks later

to allow enough time for follicular

growth. Unfortunately, oocytes are too

small (0.125 – 0.15mm)to visualise via

ultrasound. Therefore, the follicles,

which contain the oocytes, are

visualised by inserting an ultrasound

probe, equipped with a needle guide,

into the vagina.

74 | BRITISH BREEDER

The ovary is then grasped via the

rectum and held against the vaginal

wall. The fluid of each follicle is

aspirated and subsequently flushed

several times to enhance oocyte

recovery. After aspiration of all visible

follicles, the recovered fluid is filtered

and searched for the presence of

the oocytes. The oocytes are then

transferred into a transport medium

and shipped to a specialised lab,

where they are placed in a maturation

medium for 24h. This is because the

recovered oocytes are not yet ready

to be fertilised. During the normal

cycle of the mare, this maturation

happens while the follicle grows. The

maturation medium contains the same

kind of hormones that are present in

the follicular fluid. After the 24h of

incubation in the maturation medium,

the oocytes are assessed under the

microscope to evaluate whether or not

they have successfully matured. Only

matured oocytes will be fertilised.

Fertilisation in the lab is done by a

technique called Intracytoplasmic

Sperm Injection (ICSI) in which a single

spermatozoon is injected into the

oocyte. The oocyte is then transferred

into another medium to promote

the development into an embryo.

This development takes between 7-9

days. The fertilised oocytes that have

successfully developed into an embryo

will then be frozen and stored into

liquid nitrogen and shipped back to

the clinic. The frozen embryo can be

thawed and transferred at any time

during the breeding season when there

is a suitable recipient mare available.

OPU-ICSI has many advantages. Some

infertile mares fail to produce a viable

embryo for ET. Most common reasons

for this are pathology of the oviducts,

chronic uterine infections, cervical

defects, or hormonal imbalances.

These mares might lend themselves to

OPU and ICSI, as with this procedure

Dr Kaatje Ducheyne, PhD, MVSc, DipECAR, MRCVS

Sussex Equine Hospital / 01903 883050

we completely circumvent the mare’s

reproductive tract and transfer the

early embryonic development into the

laboratory. Other common candidates

for OPU-ICSI are competition mares.

Although ET allows the mare to

produce offspring without the need

of carrying the foal herself, it is hard

to plan the procedure into a busy

competition calendar. This is because

the mare needs close monitoring

of her reproductive cycle in order

to determine the optimal time of

insemination, and then the embryo

needs to be flushed out one week

later. For those mares OPU can be

a good option since it is performed

during a single visit to the clinic.

Another benefit of OPU for competition

horses is that there is no hormonal

treatment required. OPU-ICSI is further

used in cases of stallion infertility or

to optimise the use of expensive or

limited stocks of frozen semen. One

0.5ml straw of frozen semen can,

depending on the quality, be used for

3- 5 ICSI sessions. Furthermore, since

ICSI-embryos are frozen, there is no

pressure to synchronise the donor and

the recipient mare. Frozen embryos

can be transferred at your convenience

and allow planning when the foal

should be born. Frozen ICSI-embryos

are now often sold on auctions.

Additionally, ICSI offers a chance to

produce offspring in case of sudden

death, as long as the ovaries are swiftly

removed, and transported to a facility,

where the follicles can be aspirated.

All this will have a great influence on

horse breeding and will change the

conditions under which frozen semen

is sold. Until recently, UK breeders

needed to go to the continent for the

OPU procedure. Since autumn 2019

however, Sussex Equine Hospital is

offering this procedure as the only

hospital in the UK.

In summary, ET and OPU-ICSI have

created new opportunities in horse

breeding but deciding what is the

best option for your mare needs to

be decided on an individual basis. No

matter what option you choose, we

wish you all the best of

luck for this year’s

breeding

season.
