Discussion: Softening of Fill Slopes due to Moisture Infiltration, 1992

A discussion on the results of a direct-shear testing program is presented as well as the closure by the authors. The test program was carried out to investigate the incidence of adding water to soil under 90% condition of modified Proctor type of compaction test, on the horizontal deformation of it after saturating the sample. There was found that the soil softens upon moisture infiltration, and therefore, it may undergo more horizontal deformation, rather than what is concluded from the article.
