The concrete mix used for blocks shall not be richer than one part by volume of cement to<br />
six parts by volume of combined aggregates before mixing.<br />
5.7.6 Surface texture and finish<br />
Surface texture, that is, very fine closed texture or coarse open texture and finish, whether<br />
coloured or not shall be according to the drawing, description in the Schedule of Items or<br />
instructions of the Engineer.<br />
5.7.7 Marking and certificate<br />
The blocks shall be marked permanently indicating the Grade of the unit, identification of<br />
the manufacturer and the year of manufacture. Manufacturers test certificate shall be<br />
supplied with the delivery of each lot.<br />
5.8 Cement, Lime and Water<br />
Cement, lime and water shall conform to the specification under the Section Concrete of<br />
this part.<br />
5.9 Sand for Masonry Mortar<br />
Sand for masonry mortars shall be natural sand, crushed stone sand or crushed gravel<br />
and shall comply with IS : 2116 - 1980 "Sand for Masonry Mortars". The sand shall be<br />
hard, durable, clean and free from adherent coatings and shall not contain amount of<br />
clay, silt and fine dust more than 5% by wt. Sand shall not contain any harmful impurities<br />
such as iron pyrites, alkalies, salts, coal, mica and organic matters. The particle size<br />
grading of sand for use in mortars shall be within the limits as specified in Table I of<br />
above code.<br />
6.0 SAND FOR PLASTERING<br />
Sand for use in mortars for internal wall, ceiling and external plastering and rendering<br />
shall conform to IS:1542 -1992. It shall not contain any harmful impurities such as iron<br />
pyrites, alkalis, salts, coal, mica and organic matters. Percentage of salt and dust shall<br />
not be more than 5% by weight. Grading of sand shall be within the limits specified in<br />
clause no. 5.1 of above code. Fineness modulus of naturally occuring sand shall not be<br />
less than 1.5.<br />

Cement, fine aggregates, reinforcement and water used shall comply with the<br />
requirements of concrete as per clauses 2.1, 2.3, 2.6 and 2.7 of this part.<br />
Water for construction shall be clean, soft, free from loam, salt and<br />
organic materials. Hard water shall not be used.<br />
