USNS COMFORT
T-AH- 20
It's been over three decades since I was given orders to report for duty as part of the original cadre crew
of the USNS Comfort. President Reagan was my Commander In Chief and I was so proud to serve under
him. I was young, eyes wide when I reported to NASSCO shipyard in San Diego back in the eighties. My
orders were to build and make ready the largest hospital ship in the world, I was awestruck. We did just
that, spending countless hours making sure everything was perfect, seaworthy, ready to serve, when and if
we were called to duty. When completed and after sea trials we were to report to our designated homeport
in Dundalk, Maryland to serve in the Atlantic. We transited the Panama Canal where this picture was
taken. Notice the civilian cars on the flight deck, sssshhhh. Two things I will never forget are when I was
presented with the "Order Of The Ditch" for transiting the canal, and this still chokes me up, when I was
was officially designated as PLANKOWNER of the USNS Comfort T-AH-20.
On Monday March 30, 2020 the Comfort once again returned to duty in NYC berthing on the West side
of Manhattan in response to a global pandemic. I was so proud seeing her steam up the Hudson River, so
proud of the her brave and courageous crew standing tall and ready to serve our nation as doctor's, nurses,
and corpsmen which i'm proud to call myself. Let's not forget the Military Sealift Command crew
stationed aboard who navigate and run the ship, brave men all of them.
Godspeed to them all, as they once again serve our nation proudly, and courageously.
CAMP
Janet Truax
Campership Fund
Janet Truax was the summer registrar for Camp Pinnacle for many
years. As the person running registration, Miss Janet made sure every
child who wanted to come to camp was able to do just that. She would
call her church and other friends and say, "this child needs help going
to camp. What can you do?" She made sure scholarship money was
available. She passed at the age of 81 and right to the end she kept up
the fight for kids to be able to come to camp.
Every year 10-20 kids are able to experience the beauty and
adventure at Camp Pinnacle. From horses to motorcycles and fishing
ponds to talent show's, along with s'mores, fireside singing, and the
message of God's love for all of us... it's an amazing experience for
these kids. We would like to do that again this year with your help.
Camperships go to children in single parent homes, families in
trauma, and larger families with financial need. If you would like to
donate to the fund or apply for a scholarship, please contact Kayla
Trianni at (528)872-9100 or e-mail info@camppinnacle.org
CROSSROADS
In these crazy times, we are all thinking we want to return 2020, it came with
a virus. I do not understand what is happening and I am not going to pretend I
know something more than you. I believe in God and I will tell you I have
never read the bible in it's entirety. I will tell you their are times I argue with
God and ask him why. Truth is, my version of the truth anyway is God is the
Father of many children, lots of them are bad, but like a parent, its an
unconditional love that only a parent can understand and so we must deal
with everyone with love because they are his children too. Not an easy thing
to do, but that's where faith and trust come in to play.
When I have no answers, I am faced with admitting I am not in control. I am
faced with putting every thought I have in Gods hands. When these bad
things pass, I do make sure I say good morning to God each day to let him
know I dont just need him on bad days. On bad days I repeat this Psalm that I
share with you Psalm 46:10. He says, "Be still, and know that I am God; I will
be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth." Exodus 14:14,
The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.
We at Twist n Throttle Magazine pray for this country, the world and all
people. We thank all people doing their part, those working and those home
are all doing their part and we thank you.
