Bbright lights, and nightlife<br />

of Las Vegas, Nevada is a<br />

thriving art scene. In the midst<br />

of this activity, photographer<br />

and painter, Anja Whitemyer,<br />

opened the AW Gallery in 2016,<br />

housed in the Arts Factory<br />

Building. Contained therein is a<br />

variety of art galleries,<br />

restaurants and boutiques, in<br />

the heart of the Arts District.<br />

Each month, a First<br />

Friday event is held,<br />

drawing between 1500<br />

and 2500 visitors. Art<br />

of every sort attracts<br />

collectors and buyers<br />

from California, New<br />

York and other states<br />

in the U.S., as well as<br />

Canada, for a night of<br />

festivities.<br />

Whitemyer's vision<br />

for the gallery is to<br />

showcase local,<br />

national and<br />

international artists.<br />

AW Gallery represents<br />

twenty artists.<br />

Contained on a single<br />

level, there are two<br />

showrooms, totaling<br />

1000 square feet.<br />

About 65% of the art is<br />

sold in the gallery,<br />

while 35% is sold<br />

Most recently, pop<br />

art has been the focus<br />

of a number of<br />

exhibits. Currently, one<br />

can find the work of P.J.<br />

Andrews on view. The<br />

exhibit concentrates on<br />

the current popularity<br />

of the super heroes of<br />

comic strips. Andrews<br />

has devised a way to<br />

combine glitter with<br />

acrylic, to make the<br />

characters in the<br />

pieces appear threedimensional.<br />

As a Las Vegas artist,<br />

Viktor Marroquin, is<br />

right on point with the<br />

glamour and glitz of<br />

Sin City as well.<br />

Marroquin creates<br />

large-scale paintings of<br />

iconic individuals<br />

(including Marilyn<br />

Monroe, Andy Warhol<br />

and Benjamin Franklin)<br />

utilizing the pointillism<br />

technique, then<br />

incorporating a glass<br />

and diamond dust<br />

coating, for a touch of<br />

sparkle. His pieces are<br />

pitch perfect, befitting<br />

of this light-filled city.<br />

In addition to pop art, the<br />

gallery is currently featuring the<br />

work of Dave Clay, who creates<br />

art with a purpose. Clay paints<br />

not only for aesthetics, but to<br />

bring awareness to PTSD and<br />

abuse, as well as to promote<br />

healing. He starts with an image<br />

from his mind, allowing his<br />

subconscious to flow until the<br />

piece is completed. Many of his<br />

paintings are somber, while<br />

others ooze romanticism,<br />

serving as therapy for himself<br />

and his viewers.<br />

With an expansion in 2019, the<br />

gallery packs a lot of punch,<br />

having eighteen artists currently<br />

on exhibit. Regardless of square<br />

footage, above all, Whitemyer, is<br />

interested in building lasting<br />

relationships with the artists and<br />

collectors.<br />

The Little Gallery opened<br />

its doors during<br />

November 2018 in the<br />

busy shopping district of<br />

Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, PA.<br />

This brick and mortar space of<br />

400 square feet offers an<br />

eclectic mix of American,<br />

French, and British art from the<br />

early twentieth century to<br />

contemporary artists.<br />

The gallery also has works of<br />

art by Philadelphia artists, both<br />

past and present. Gallery owner<br />

Andrew Domanski collected art<br />

over the past 30 years in France<br />

and the United Kingdom. He<br />

received his Master's in Art<br />

History from the University of<br />

Edinburgh in Scotland and<br />

studied at the University of<br />

Pennsylvania.<br />

combining the old with the<br />

new. He lives in a mid-19th<br />

century Victorian house, with a<br />

few pieces of 18th and 19th<br />

century furniture mixed in with<br />

a lot of American and European<br />

20th century modern design<br />

The Little Gallery is still new and evolving, and Domanski believes there is more art out<br />

there for him to bring into the gallery for his growing client base and visitors who are<br />

finding affordable treasures of art to hang on their walls and enjoy.<br />

If you are a fan of the arts, Scottsdale, Arizona is a city<br />

that you will want to visit, with its seventy plus galleries<br />

and vibrant art community. For those seeking cutting<br />

edge art, Xanadu Gallery should be at the top of the list.<br />

Owned by Jason and Carrie Horejs, the couple believe so<br />

completely in the gallery's artists, that a large<br />

percentage of their personal collection consists of the<br />

business' represented artists' work, in addition to<br />

Mexican folk art.<br />

For Jason Horejs, art is in his blood. As a teenager, he<br />

began assisting his father, who struggled to break into<br />

the art business, by assembling painting canvases on his<br />

behalf. At the young age of seventeen, he joined the<br />

staff of a large, western art gallery in Scottsdale, where<br />

unbeknownst to him, he acquired the knowledge he<br />

would later need to run his own gallery.<br />

Even though Jason's wife,<br />

Carrie Horejs, holds a degree in<br />

public relations, she has always<br />

had a hand in the field of art as<br />

well. While attending university,<br />

she interned at a local art<br />

museum. Although neither she<br />

or her husband are artists<br />

themselves, considering their<br />

combined experience, it<br />

seemed natural to start a<br />

gallery of their own. After<br />

several years in the making,<br />

Xanadu Gallery opened in<br />

2001.<br />

The timing could not have<br />

been worse. As it happened,<br />

opening day was September<br />

11th of that same year. With a<br />

new business that initially<br />

seemed to make perfect sense,<br />

they couldn't help but wonder<br />

if they had made a terrible<br />

mistake, since the opening<br />

coincided with such a horrific<br />

event.<br />

With nearly thirty years now<br />

behind them, they can<br />

confidently conclude that the<br />

decision to open their business<br />

doors was a good one. The<br />

gallery currently represents<br />

over forty artists in the 2200<br />

square foot space. Their<br />

success has even allowed them<br />

to open a second location in<br />

Pinetop, Arizona, near the<br />

mountains of the eastern part<br />

of the state.<br />

The couple attributes their<br />

success to the respect they<br />

have for each of the artists who<br />

exhibit at the gallery. They seek<br />

to keep the lines of<br />

communication open and<br />

always remain responsive to<br />

the artists' needs. Jason is<br />

especially sensitive to this,<br />

having witnessed firsthand the<br />

struggles that his father had<br />

endured. Because of this,<br />

payments to artists are quick to<br />

follow, after a sale has been<br />

made.

To further assist the artists, Jason maintains a blog. Articles<br />

center around the relationship between artists and galleries. He<br />

seeks to demystify newcomers to the business of art. In many<br />

cases, artists are great at creativity, but lack knowledge with<br />

regard to marketing and sales.<br />

Horejs also points to the great staff for Xanadu's triumphs. He<br />

and Carrie understand that the employees are a huge part of the<br />

gallery's success. The personalized service they provide to the<br />

collectors is key. The owners are indebted to those who work<br />

diligently on behalf of the gallery and the artists.<br />

Imaginative exhibits attract<br />

visitors too. The Horejs' have a<br />

great barometer, as the same<br />

pieces that captivate and<br />

delight them, also intrigue their<br />

guests. Visitors share the<br />

enthusiasm for what is on<br />

display. With the bottom line of<br />

the business being the bottom<br />

line, they are making some<br />

sound decisions.<br />

Another contributing factor<br />

to sales is the innovative artists<br />

featured at Xanadu, including<br />

Stephen Hansen, who is<br />

currently showing at the<br />

gallery. Residing in the<br />

neighboring state of New<br />

Mexico, Hansen pays tribute to<br />

great works of art, by adding a<br />

humorous twist. Each of his<br />

paintings include a threedimensional,<br />

cartoon-like paper<br />

mâché painter, who appears to<br />

be creating the masterpiece at<br />

hand. Gallery clients are<br />

enthused.<br />

Never satisfied with the status quo, Jason personally handles all gallery installations,<br />

including that of another current artist, Maria Botera. Botera uses layers of hand-painted<br />

glass to create floral representations resembling holograms. The pieces have been an<br />

instant success, with the first sale just hours after the show opened at Xanadu. Several<br />

additional sales have followed.<br />

The gallery remains flexible<br />

as well, to keep up with<br />

changing trends. They<br />

participate in weekly Thursday<br />

night art walks, in addition to<br />

holding about six to eight<br />

exhibits per year. These events<br />

seem to have sparked renewed<br />

interest from the guests.<br />

Like many other galleries, the<br />

Horejs' recognize changes in<br />

the way art is marketed with<br />

the advent of the internet.<br />

Jason claims that it has<br />

“democratized the art market.”<br />

Collectors now have access to<br />

art everywhere. The online<br />

avenue has translated to 15%<br />

of Xanadu's overall sales.<br />

With innovative art at the<br />

forefront and no aversion to<br />

change, Xanadu should see<br />

continued growth over the next<br />

thirty years.<br />

Whats Up<br />

Nineteen sixty-nine is a<br />

curious name for an<br />

art gallery. The first<br />

thing that comes to mind is the<br />

street address of the business.<br />

Strike one. Perhaps it's the year<br />

in which the building was<br />

erected. Strike two. Maybe it's<br />

the owner's favorite number,<br />

although unlikely. Most people<br />

would select a single digit or<br />

two at most. Strike three. With<br />

some research, it is evident that<br />

this was the year in which the<br />

owner, Quang Bao, was born.<br />

Hailing from Vietnam, Bao<br />

had been a writer by profession<br />

for most of his life. How was it<br />

that he became the owner and<br />

curator of a gallery? According<br />

to Bao, he came to work for art<br />

collectors Susan and Michael<br />

Hort in 2007. This started the<br />

ball rolling.<br />

In case you're<br />

unfamiliar with the<br />

Horts, they were<br />

among the top 200<br />

collectors in the<br />

United States in 2016,<br />

according to ArtNet.<br />

They began their<br />

collection of<br />

contemporary art in<br />

1985, and have<br />

assembled one of the<br />

past 50 year's most<br />

important collections.<br />

In 2015, Bao<br />

returned unemployed<br />

to the U.S. from Berlin.<br />

That's pretty good<br />

incentive for sorting<br />

out a means for<br />

income. Those closest<br />

to him said that they<br />

would support him in<br />

whatever he chose to<br />

do. He chose to open<br />

an art gallery.<br />

Bao took over the<br />

lease which previously<br />

belonged to an<br />

architectural firm, that<br />

used the space as a<br />

pop-up gallery.<br />

Fortunately for Bao,<br />

they handled all of the<br />

repairs to make the<br />

building structurally<br />

sound, before turning<br />

the business over to<br />

him.<br />

The space is<br />

atypical, which lends<br />

itself to creativity with<br />

regard to laying out<br />

exhibits. The gallery is<br />

situated on the first<br />

floor, but according to<br />

Bao, it has “a great<br />

basement.” This<br />

Manhattan gallery<br />

also has an outdoor<br />

area.<br />

The gallery currently<br />

represents five artists.<br />

They include Cristina<br />

BanBan, who works in<br />

charcoal and pastels,<br />

and concentrates on<br />

creating voluptuous<br />

women in anime and<br />

the neoclassical style.<br />

Keiran Brennan Hinton<br />

is an oil painter of<br />

domestic scenes of<br />

tranquility.<br />

Mark Ryan Chariker is a<br />

printmaker and oil painter who<br />

primarily creates<br />

monochromatic scenes of<br />

imaginary landscapes. Anthony<br />

Cudahy typically paints from<br />

photographs that he has found,<br />

leaning toward figurative and<br />

abstract themes and Maria<br />

Fragoso creates colorful<br />

painting that focus on love and<br />

relationships.<br />

Although Bao has writing<br />

skills, he is not a visual artist<br />

himself. He works closely,<br />

however, with those he<br />

represents. The gallery splits all<br />

proceeds with the artists.

Each of the five represented individuals have private<br />

studios, where they pay rent and create art with supplies<br />

funded by their own means. Bao regularly visits with<br />

them, to keep abreast of what they are creating. He and<br />

his staff are responsible for the calendar of exhibits and<br />

other events, as well as promotions and sales.<br />

The gallery seems to be enjoying success. Visitors are<br />

constant, with Sunday being the most popular day of the<br />

week.<br />

Jacqueline Boyd<br />

Jacqueline Boyd is a<br />

painter whose style<br />

evokes reality but breaks<br />

from it at the same time.<br />

Places and spaces are<br />

recognizable but often<br />

merged or combined to form<br />

something more felt than<br />

rendered. She became a<br />

professional artist in her mid-<br />

40s and attended the<br />

Pennsylvania Academy of the<br />

Fine Arts in Philadelphia and<br />

graduated in 2007. Boyd’s<br />

favorite subjects to paint are<br />

things familiar in every day<br />

life such as family, trees,<br />

landscapes, and memories of<br />

beloved places and spaces<br />

that are dear to her.<br />

ArtGalleryAmerica: Do you consider your paintings as<br />

individual works unto themselves, or do they belong to a<br />

larger group of works?<br />

Jacqueline Boyd: Yes, I consider them individual works<br />

even when they are done in a series.<br />

ArtGalleryAmerica: What is your creative process like?<br />

Boyd: The process isn’t always the same. I may start a<br />

painting with a foundation of color, determining a<br />

palette as I work (which may or may not have any<br />

connection to reality) and paint abstractly the feeling I<br />

have about the subject. Not over thinking it. I then lightly<br />

lay in the subject overtop of the chaotic first layer. I<br />

incorporate what’s underneath into the image as I paint<br />

and continually search and respond to what to add and<br />

what to leave. Sometimes I draw a subject over another<br />

subject and incorporate the space underneath into the<br />

new space, deconstructing and reworking into a new<br />

combined image. The then and the now, the memory<br />

and the now becomes merged into one. A new<br />

combined place or space emerges. The painting is a<br />

searching and adapting to what is found along the way.<br />

ArtGalleryAmerica:<br />

Is there a philosophical and/or spiritual side to your<br />

work?<br />

Boyd: My work speaks of a unity of the past, present and<br />

future, my observation of the oneness of things and my<br />

daily effort to live in the present.<br />

ArtGalleryAmerica: Tell me about the range of your<br />

subject. Do you have some recurring/favorite subjects?<br />

Boyd: I relate the range of subjects to the joy of simple<br />

things, the comfort of everyday rituals and spaces<br />

(studio, home), places I walk often, trees and landscapes<br />

that I pass by over and over and doors and windows. I<br />

often paint spaces where I spent a lot time in the past,<br />

i.e. family home, workspaces and studios. I return to<br />

these subjects again and again.<br />

ArtGalleryAmerica: Do you do many sketches or<br />

preliminary studies before you start a painting, or series<br />

of paintings?<br />

Boyd: Not usually. My process is intuitive, and often the<br />

outcome is not what I started with in the beginning.<br />

have created? How many<br />

paintings do you produce in a<br />

year?<br />

Boyd: I’m not sure how many<br />

I’ve created. This year I<br />

produced about 30 paintings.<br />

ArtGalleryAmerica: How do<br />

you see your art developing in<br />

the coming years?<br />

Boyd: As I continue to paint, I<br />

can be sure that wherever the<br />

journey leads me, it will be full<br />

of new discoveries that I can’t<br />

begin to predict. I find that<br />

exciting!<br />

ArtGalleryAmerica: Describe<br />

your studio or where you<br />

create most of your work.<br />

Boyd: My studio consists of<br />

several rooms that each serves<br />

a purpose. I paint in one room<br />

and use others for storage of<br />

canvases, supplies and finished<br />

paintings and a designated<br />

room for desk and computer. I<br />

have everything I need and<br />

always look forward to coming<br />

to the studio.<br />

ArtGalleryAmerica: Where do<br />

you sell your work and how do<br />

you engage your audience?<br />

Boyd: My work is sold through<br />

exhibitions and through Stanek<br />

Gallery. I engage my audience<br />

through social media by<br />

posting new work and<br />

announcements of upcoming<br />

exhibitions and referring them<br />

to Stanek Gallery.<br />

ArtGalleryAmerica: What<br />

emotions do you enjoy<br />

conveying in your work? Which<br />

is the easiest and hardest to<br />

capture?<br />

Boyd: The words I’ve chosen<br />

may not be emotions, but<br />

these words describe what I<br />

feel my work conveys: stillness,<br />

joy, depth, sensitivity, oneness,<br />

beauty and most of all<br />

something undefinable,<br />

something else. There may not<br />

be a word for it, but it is felt. It<br />

is this “something undefinable”<br />

that is the hardest to capture,<br />

because I have to let it emerge.<br />

I can’t force it.<br />

the market respond to your<br />

work?<br />

Boyd: My work has been well<br />

received and I am grateful for<br />
