To be honest, when I imagined you reading this the April 2020 

Doorsteppa, you were meant to have a copy in your hand and I was 

meant to be on a beach in Tenerife, for my first family holiday in 

over 2 years and my first beach holiday in the sun in over 10! 

It just shows how quickly the world has changed in a few short 

months and we have all had to make decisions and adjustments as 

a result. Unfortunately we have no choice but to suspend print 

and distribution of the magazines for now. After being in 

communication with our trusted and reliable team as things 

unfolded, we felt this was the only sensible decision. 

As we had already produced this month’s publications for print we 

are sharing them online and thank you for reading. We would be 

very grateful if you could please share the link as widely as you can 

on all social media and when you speak with friends and family. 

As you will see from our contents opposite, there is some 

information that we hope will help, but do always check the NHS 

and Gov.uk websites for up to date advice. There are details of 

exercising at home and an easy recipe for a quick dinner, to help us 

all. You will also be pleased to know all of our usual features and 

some different articles are included, for a bit of a break from it all. 

Please carefully check with any advertiser or organisation you 

intend to use from this month’s issue. Before incurring any 

expense or making any plans – please call first. The information is 

up to date as we went to production, but you will appreciate things 

are changing daily. 

With Doorsteppa being produced for Barlborough, Clowne and 

Renishaw for over 10 years and with us adding other areas over that 

time, I have always prided myself on the fact that we have never 

missed an issue. Every month, like clockwork, the next issue would 

be delivered locally. Even when Sheila, who suddenly passed away 

in September 2016, we got the October issue out. When we 

experienced the various traumas and illnesses that every family 

faces, we got the issues out. Through the birth of my daughters in 

2012 and 2019 and everything that follows, we got the issues out... 

you get the idea. 

Everyone has unexpected trials and tribulations to deal with and I 

don’t share the above to show off or be a martyr. It just illustrates 

how unprecedented the current situation is and also how much we 

all like to be the master of our own ships in the face of adversity. But 

for now, we must take the route that has been laid out for us by 

trusted experts. 

Stay at home. Protect the NHS. If you are vulnerable, alone or need 

assistance, ask friends, family and neighbours to help and use online 

services if you can. If this is not possible, businesses and charities 

are gearing up to help with arrangements according to gov.uk, so 

speak to your GP surgery or any NHS carers or staff you may already 

see. If you are at home with family, count your blessings and stay in. 

Get round to fixing that wonky kitchen cupboard and the eternal 

declutter project. 

We’ve all heard the often quoted and adapted phrase ‘Keep Calm 

and Carry On.’ We can’t carry on as we were, but we can carry on, 

and we will get through this. Stay healthy.

Social distancing measures are steps you 

can take to reduce social interaction 

between people. This will help reduce the 

transmission of coronavirus (COVID-19). 

They are to: 

1. Avoid contact with someone who is 

displaying symptoms of coronavirus 

(COVID-19). These symptoms include high 

temperature and/or new and continuous 

cough. 

2. Avoid non-essential use of public 

transport when possible. 

3. Work from home, where possible. Your 

employer should support you to do this. 

4. Avoid large and small gatherings in 

public spaces, noting that pubs,

How A Haunted Farmhouse Inspired Local 

Author 

The 3-week old baby sleeping in the dark 

corner was the only person in the room. 

The old woman sleeping in her chair downstairs 

was disturbed by a noise above. She wearily 

climbed the stairs and opened the bedroom 

door, in time to watch pokers clanking 

awkwardly stabbing the embers. That baby was 

me and the old lady my grannie when we 

resided in a very old farmhouse in Wiltshire. 

Her tale lingered on and for many years I 

wanted to pen a ghost story. 

‘The Curse of Becton Manor’ isn’t about that 

farmhouse but a haunted Elizabethan manor 

house in Derbyshire and the trials and 

tribulations of two families centuries apart. In 

1597 the tensions are borne from religious 

strife and the persecution of ‘witches’. In 1957, 

sordid secrets are not given up without a fight. 

The author of two excellent books, Anne 

Grange (‘Inside Outside’ and ‘Distortion’) 

recommends the debut novel of Patricia Ayling: 

‘A thrilling page turner with characters that 

come to life; full of fascinating historical details.’ 

Patricia, who now lives in Killamarsh says, ‘This 

story has had hundreds of changes and made 

me realise that it is not easy to pen a book. 

I would strongly urge potential writers to revisit 

their work several times, chopping 

unnecessary detail; omitting excessive 

description, adverbs and punctuation. Don’t be 

disheartened by rejections which are often 

subjective.

A very relevant story about a 77 year old man 

who is down to his last tea bag, no money, no 

food, no heating etc and his journey to make a

Walking from Doncaster to London to see the 

Prime Minister, it’s moving, relevant, 

heartbreakingly funny and so worth reading. 

The author has written a time travel trilogy, 

The Diary of Nicholas Oldman, a book of short 

stories, Twisty, a book about a serial killer, 

Searching for Sam, each are very different and 

each are excellent but this latest the Last Tea 

Bag is my favourite.

Many Doorsteppa readers will be 

familiar with The Showroom By Paul 

Webster, a local business with a runaway 

success story. Until very recently, the 

experienced team were based across 

two sites at Bolsover and Derby Road 

and they have now taken the exciting 

decision to significantly expand at 

Derby Road, basing their operations 

there, giving customers access to a 

larger showroom, showcasing the latest 

kitchens and bathrooms available in the 

UK, including Kessler kitchens and Union 

bathrooms exclusively in the area. 

We went along to visit the team to 

check out the kitchens and bathrooms 

on show and to find out more about 

their exciting plans for the future. 

The Showroom was opened by Paul and 

Lesley Webster in Bolsover in 2017 and 

remains family run. With a combined 

50 plus years in the industry, they got 

started with this venture just the two of 

them and now already have a team of 9 

staff. 

During this remarkable growth in just 3 

short years, the time has flown and 

Lesley remembers fondly the day she 

put the first tile up in the Bolsover 

Showroom. 

Many entrepreneurs describe their 

business as their baby and this is no 

different. For this baby though, the 

early stages are flying! “Our journey 

with The Showroom has been so 

exciting and we have grown so quickly” 

“While we couldn’t be happier with 

where we are now in 2020, starting 

your own business is a bit like having a 

baby, and as with all those milestones

they purchased the land beside the 

beautiful Derby Road Showroom and 

leapt at the chance to make their 

premises larger. A lot larger! An extra 

3000 square foot of space will be added.

for a larger tile studio. The expansion is 

expected to be fully complete late

23 MENTAL HEALTH 

Infectious disease outbreaks, like the current Coronavirus 

(COVID-19), can be scary and can affect our mental 

health. While it is important to stay informed, there are 

also many things we can do to support and manage our 

wellbeing during such times. 

Here are some tips we hope will help you, your friends and 

your family to look after your mental health at a time when 

there is much discussion of potential threats to our physical 

health. 

Looking after your mental health while you have to stay 

at home 

The government is now advising us to avoid all but essential 

social contact. This will mean that more of us will be 

spending a lot of time at home and many of our regular 

social activities will no longer be available to us. It will help 

to try and see it as a different period of time in your life, 

and not necessarily a bad one, even if you didn’t choose it. 

It will mean a different rhythm of life, a chance to be in 

touch with others in different ways than usual. Be in touch 

with other people regularly on social media, e-mail or on 

the phone, as they are still good ways of being close to the 

people who matter to you. 

Create a new daily routine that prioritises looking after 

yourself. You could try reading more or watching movies, 

having an exercise routine, trying new relaxation 

techniques. Try and rest and view this as a new if unusual 

experience, that might have its benefits. 

Try to avoid speculation and look up reputable sources on 

the outbreak 

Rumour and speculation can fuel anxiety. Having access to 

good quality information about the virus can help you feel 

more in control. 

You can get up-to-date information and advice on the virus 

at www.Gov.uk. 

Follow hygiene advice such as washing your hands more 

often than usual, for 20 seconds with soap and hot water 

(do this for 20 seconds). You should do this whenever you 

get home or into work, blow your nose, sneeze or cough, 

eat or handle food. You should also use tissues if you 

sneeze and make sure you dispose of them quickly; and 

stay at home if you are feeling unwell. 

Try to stay connected 

At times of stress, we work better in company and with 

support. Try and keep in touch with your friends and family, 

by telephone, email or social media, or contact a helpline 

for emotional support. You may like to focus on the things 

you can do if you feel able to: 

• Stress management • Keep active • Eat a balanced diet • 

Stay in touch with friends on social media but try not to 

sensationalise things • If you are sharing content, use this 

from trusted sources, and remember that your friends 

might be worried too. 

Also remember to regularly assess your social media 

activity. Tune in with yourself and ask if they need to be 

adjusted. Are there particular accounts or people that are 

increasing your worry or anxiety? Consider muting or 

unfollowing accounts or hashtags that cause you to feel 

anxious. 

Talk to your children 

Involving our family and children in our plans for good 

health is essential. We need be alert to and ask children 

what they have heard about the outbreak and support 

them, without causing them alarm. 

We need to minimise the negative impact it has on our 

children and explain the facts to them. Discuss the news 

with them but try and avoid over-exposure to coverage of 

the virus. Be as truthful as possible. Let’s not avoid the 

‘scary topic’ but engage in a way that is appropriate for 

them. 

Try to anticipate distress 

It is OK to feel vulnerable and overwhelmed as we read 

news about the outbreak, especially if you have experienced 

trauma or a mental health problem in the past, or if you 

have a long-term physical health condition that makes you 

more vulnerable to the effects of the coronavirus. 

It’s important to acknowledge these feelings and remind 

each other to look after our physical and mental health. 

We should also be aware of and avoid increasing habits 

that may not be helpful in the long term, like smoking and 

drinking. 

Try and reassure people you know who may be worried 

and check in with people who you know are living alone. 

Try not to make assumptions 

Don’t judge people and avoid jumping to conclusions 

about who is responsible for the spread of the disease. The 

Coronavirus can affect anyone, regardless of gender, 

ethnicity or sex. 

Try to manage how you follow the outbreak in the media 

There is extensive news coverage about the outbreak. If 

you find that the news is causing you huge stress, it’s 

important to find a balance. 

It’s best that you don’t avoid all news and that you keep 

informing and educating yourself, but limit your news 

intake if it is bothering you.

Snoring Week 

Snoring is the distinctive sound made by 

vibrations of the soft palate and other tissue in 

the mouth, nose and throat. It is caused by 

turbulence which occurs due to a partial 

blockage that may be located anywhere from 

the tip of the nose to the vocal cords.

if a person stops breathing for more than 10 

seconds each time and if occurs more than 5 

times every hour. OSA only happens during 

sleep. When you experience an episode of 

apnoea during sleep your brain will 

automatically wake you up, usually with a very 

loud snore or snort, in order to breathe again. 

People with OSA can experience wakening 

episodes many times during the night and 

consequently feel very sleepy during the day. 

During waking hours muscle tone keeps the 

airway in good shape. When we sleep our 

throat muscles relax and this decrease in tone 

can cause airways to narrow and vibrate. 

Though it can certainly feel like your partner is 

doing it to annoy you, no-one snores 

deliberately, and unfortunately it can't be 

cured. But it can be controlled. The key to 

control is to find out the cause of your 

particular snoring. Snoring can be related to the 

tongue, nose, mouth, or it can be multi-factorial. 

Historically it was considered to be a male 

problem, but it actually affects males to females 

in the ratio of 2:1. Women tend to under-report 

and fail to seek help due to embarrassment 

because even in the 21st century it’s considered 

‘unladylike’ to snore! The risk factors for 

snoring are similar in women to men: being 

overweight, smoking, and alcohol are common 

factors, but women also snore more following 

the menopause and it’s one of the symptoms of 

hypothyroidism. 

Snoring is often considered a joke, but it can 

have a devastating effect on people. Sleep 

deprivation (both the snorer and their partner) 

is physically and mentally debilitating and can 

lead to illness as well as relationship breakdown. 

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is a particularly 

dangerous side-effect of snoring, defined as the 

cessation of airflow during sleep, preventing air 

from entering the lungs caused by an 

If you are excessively sleepy during the day and 

feel irritable or restless, you may be suffering 

from OSA. Your partner may point out that 

your snoring is loud, often interrupted by 

pauses and gasps. You might fall asleep at work, 

whilst driving, or during conversations. You 

might be forgetful and irritable and suffer with 

morning headaches. Not everyone who has 

these symptoms will have sleep apnoea but if 

you suffer with them a lot, you should seek 

advice from a medical professional.

and information about all aspects of snoring.

29 HISTORY 

This month we thought it apt to mark the 75th 

Anniversary of VE Day on the 8th of May 2020. 

VE Day – or ‘Victory in Europe Day’ marked the end 

of World War Two (WW2) when fighting against Nazi 

Germany in Europe came to an end. 

On the 8th of May 1945, Prime Minister Winston 

Churchill made an announcement on the radio at 

3.00 pm that the war in Europe had come to an end, 

following Germany’s surrender the day before. By 

the beginning of 1945, the German army had been 

weakened and defeat looked likely. Tuesday the 8th 

of May was an emotional day that millions of people 

had been waiting for. Many people were extremely 

happy that the fighting had stopped and there were 

big celebrations and street parties. Hugh crowds – 

with lots of people dressed in red, white and blue – 

gathered outside Buckingham Palace in London. 

They cheered as King George VI and his family, 

including Princess Elizabeth (now our Queen) and 

Princess Margaret came out on to the balcony to 

greet everyone. 

VE Day A party at Norwood 

Princess Elizabeth and her sister were allowed to 

leave the Palace and celebrate with crowds outside, 

although they had to do it secretly. Many people 

also attended church services to thank God for the 

victory. London’s St Paul’s cathedral held 10 services, 

which were attended by thousands of people. 

But VE Day was also a moment of great sadness and 

reflection, as millions of people had lost their lives or 

loved ones in the conflict. Many had to continue 

fighting in other battles and lots of people were 

being kept as prisoners of war abroad. 

Even though VE Day marked victory for Europe over 

Germany, it did not mark the end of World War Two. 

In his VE Day announcement, Winston Churchill said: 

“We may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing, 

but let us not forget for a moment the toil and 

efforts that lie ahead.” Even after the 8th of May, 

many soldiers, sailors and pilots were sent to the 

east to fight against the Japanese who had not yet 

surrendered. 

This came on the 14th of August 1945, after two 

atomic bombs were dropped on the Japanese cities 

of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. On the 15th of August 

1945 the allies had officially defeated Japan and this 

date is known as VJ Day. 

VE Day at the Nags Head pub 

The May Day holiday this year has been moved back 

by four days to Friday the 8th of May for the whole 

of the UK, to coincide with the 75th Anniversary of 

VE Day. 

Sir Andrew Gregory, chief executive of SSAFA, the 

Armed Forces charity, said the government’s 

decision was fitting. “It is our duty to keep the 

events of the past alive in collective memory, 

including future generations – this is how we ensure 

that such a conflict never happens again,” he said. 

“It is our hope that the nation takes a moment to 

reflect on the significance of this date, as a milestone 

that changed the course of history for the whole 

world,” he added. 

On Saturday the 9th of May, Killamarsh VE Day 75 is 

taking place at Killamarsh Leisure Centre from 11.00 

am to 5.00 pm. This is a free family event with lots 

of activities, stalls etc. Why not dress in 1940s style 

to add to the atmosphere (optional). As part of this 

event there will be a Civic Service at St Giles Church, 

Kirkcroft Lane which everyone is welcome to attend.

Don’t go to the Gym! Bring the Gym to you! 

Every new health or cancer scare that doctors 

uncover seems to come with the standard, "…keep 

fit, lose weight and eat healthy foods to minimise 

the risk…" statement. We know it’s true but finding 

time to get to the gym is difficult when our lives are 

so busy. 

So why not bring the gym to your home? 

If you have an area that's big enough for you to lie 

down in, with your arms stretched out to either 

side, with a few extra inches for good measure 

you've got enough space to do a workout at home. 

No matter what your initial fitness level, aims and 

budget are you can start to exercise in the comfort 

of your own home. 

very hard. Take the simple press up as an example. 

Start doing them whilst standing and leaning 

against a wall. As you move your feet further from 

the wall it gets harder. Eventually you'll be able 

to do a full press up on the ground. Then try 

positioning your hands closer to your waistline so 

you are leaning forwards as you press up - it's 

getting harder now. Then try leaning so far 

forwards your feet leave the floor and you're into a 

planche position - not for the faint hearted! 

Other calisthenics exercises need some basic 

equipment. Dips will need a set of dip bars. Pull ups 

will need some pull up bars. But all of these are 

relatively cheap to purchase and take up minimal 

space when not in use. 

Basic Fitness 

If you're after basic fitness you can try a home HIIT 

session. All you need is a timer or smartphone app 

and a workout program - there are loads of videos 

on YouTube for every fitness level. HIIT or High 

Intensity Interval Training works on short bursts of 

exercise, up to about 1 minute, with rests of maybe 

30 seconds in between. It gets your heart rate up 

and gives you a great workout in a very short space 

of time. Exercises range from simple marching on 

the spot, squats, and leg raises right through to 

advanced press-ups and handstands, but all doable 

in the space we mentioned earlier. An exercise mat 

might help for any lying-down exercises and a 

resistance band or small set of weights is a useful 

addition, but that's about all you'll need. 

Three, twenty-minute sessions per week and you'll 

really start to see some results. Do it in the morning 

before breakfast for maximum fat-burning 

efficiency, and to set you up for the day. 

Strength 

Building your strength can also be done at home. 

Calisthenics is a form of training that uses your body 

weight instead of free-standing weights. Each 

exercise has a series of progressions from easy to 

What about exercise machines? 

If you're starting out my advice is to avoid machines 

until you know what you like. You'll probably only 

have enough space and cash for one, and they are 

not portable so once you've got it you're stuck with 

it. Build up your basic fitness and strength first and 

then decide what you want to do. Once your body 

starts to show some results you might even be 

tempted to venture down to the gym to take 

advantage of a wider range of equipment! 

Be sensible 

Always be careful with your body. Seek professional 

advice before starting any exercise regime. Make 

sure you're working safely and within your 

capabilities. Start easy and work up to the harder 

progressions. If you have any signs of pain or 

discomfort, STOP! Rest, recover and assess the 

situation. 

Above all have fun getting fit and staying healthy.

Cooking time: 25-35 minutes 

Serves: 2-3 

Ingredients 

2 tbsp vegetable oil 

1 egg, beaten with about 2 tbsp water 

1 onion, chopped 

2 garlic cloves, crushed 

1 heaped tbsp curry powder 

2 tbsp tomato ketchup 

A large handful of frozen peas 

(about 85g/3oz) 

250g leftover cold cooked rice 

(any type) or a 250g pouch 

of ready cooked rice 

175g cooked chicken or pork, 

shredded into strips 

A good splash of soy sauce

Tip in the rice, cooked meat and a glass 

of water (100ml/31⁄2fl oz) and cook 

over a medium heat for 5-6 minutes, 

stirring as you go, until everything’s 

piping hot and the rice has taken on the 

colour of the curry powder. 

3. While your rice is frying, shred the 

omelette into long strips. Toss the 

omelette and soy sauce through the rice 

and cook for a moment more. Scoop the 

rice on to plates straight from the pan 

and serve with extra soy sauce for 

sprinkling over. 

Method 

1. Heat half the oil in a large non-stick 

frying pan over a highish heat. Pour in 

the beaten egg, swoosh it around the 

pan and leave it to set for a minute. Flip 

it over like a pancake and let it cook for 

a minute more on the other side, then 

tip it out flat on to a plate. 

2. Heat the remaining oil in the same 

pan. Tip in the onion and sizzle for 3-4 

minutes until it’s starting to brown, then 

stir in the garlic, curry powder and 

ketchup. Add the peas and cook for a

“Easter is early this year!” 

“Ooh isn’t Easter late this year?” 

Easter never seems to come on time! In fact, it’s 

a different time every year. Why is that? We 

don’t move Christmas or New Year’s Day so what 

makes Easter so flexible? 

This year Easter Sunday falls on April 12th. 

I suspect that for once it’s actually on time 

though frankly who knows?

annually. In the springtime this is around (but 

not exactly on) 20th March. Full moons occur 

every 29.5 days so between those two events 

there is quite a lot of leeway when it comes to 

dates, but Easter is always somewhere between

with confidence that Easter is early…or late…or 

possibly right where it should be.

moveable (chocolate) feast is because it is celebrated 

on the first Sunday after the Paschal full

Who doesn’t love a bag of crisps? They are 

so moreish you can never eat just one. They 

were reportedly invented by a chef named 

George Crum who created them in 1853 at 

Moon's Lake House near Saratoga Springs, 

New York. Legend has it that a customer 

kept sending his fried potatoes back to the 

kitchen, complaining that they were soggy, 

and not crunchy enough. Fed up with the 

constant griping Crum sliced the potatoes 

as thin as possible, fried them in hot fat, 

then doused them with salt. The customer 

loved them and "Saratoga Chips" were 

born! They quickly became a popular item 

at the lodge and throughout the whole of 

New England.
