from the
editor
Thank You
Delray
During this time of uncertainty and concern, all of
us at Atlantic Ave Magazine would like to humbly
say “Thank You.” We appreciate the loyalty of our
small business advertisers - that through thick and
thin have always stayed with us. We appreciate our
readers, who without you, there is no us.
Delray Beach is a special place. We are a community, a family.
A pedestrian Village by the Sea that welcomes everyone year-round,
from near and far, to enjoy our little piece of paradise.
Now, as we navigate through this worldwide pandemic, we need to
come together, help each other, be supportive of all our small businesses
in any way possible, look out for our elderly and underserved, and be
the best possible humans we can be. For the sake of Delray. For the sake
of Florida. For the sake of America. The sake of our Planet.
Please practice Social Distancing, Self-Quarantine, and Stay In Place.
Our first responders, hospitals, and doctors need our help. We need to
be socially responsible, sanitize, and stay healthy. A large problem we
are facing is asymptomatic people unknowingly spreading this scary
Coronavirus.
Reconnect with a book, re-watch favorite movies and tv series. Maybe
put pen to paper and write a note or a letter to someone you miss and
love. Practice self-love and stretch, meditate, breathe…
We will get through this – together.
There is
hope after
despair,
and many
suns after
darkness.
George Gann, Chief Conservation Strategist for the Institute
for Regional Conservation (IRC), was the featured speaker at
the recent Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce Nonprofit Luncheon.
IRC is a nonprofit dedicated to the protection, restoration,
and long-term management of ecological diversity.
Mr. Gann spoke to all of the nonprofit representatives about
IRC’s history, current projects like Restoring the Gold Coast and
urged attendees to personally get involved with restoring biodiversity.
“Native ecosystems provide a wide range of benefits, including
habitat for native wildlife and rare plants, and ecosystem
services that people rely on for strong economies and human
wellbeing,” said Mr. Gann. “Ecological restoration practice is
about repairing native ecosystems that have been destroyed or
degraded by misuse.”
Cancelled
The Greater Delray Beach Chamber of Commerce announced
today that the 58th Annual Delray Affair scheduled for April
3, 4 and 5 has been cancelled.
Governor DeSantis held a press conference recommending
that all municipalities consider limiting or postponing major
events, “I am recommending local municipalities and private
entities to strongly consider limiting or postponing mass gatherings
in the state of Florida,” the governor said. “This is an
opportunity, our health officials believe, where some of these
large-scale events can be postponed and do it later.”
Crane’s Beach
House Announces
Discounted
Extended Stay
Options for
Stranded Area
Visitors
“No Contact” Guest Service Process
and Heightened Precautionary
Measures
Crane’s Beach House Boutique Hotel &
Luxury Villas has announced that it will
offer affordable extended and long-term
stay options for their large kitchenette studios
and apartment-style one bedroom
suites, in an effort to support destination
visitors who have been displaced, wish to
avoid return travel, or are attempting to stay
away from public spaces during this time of
heightened precaution.
The 28-room luxury boutique property
has introduced unseasonably reduced rates
to ensure South Florida visitors are provided
safe, sanitary and affordable options
for accommodations. These extended and
long-term stay rates will be offered through
the summer, based on availability. All food
and beverage including our complimentary
breakfast and poolside tiki bar have been
discontinued as a precautionary measure
to keep our staff and guests safe. Please call
our front desk at 561.278.1700 for pricing,
availability and more information.
In addition to its current offerings,
Crane’s has instituted substantial measurements
to safeguard guests while the threat
of exposure to COVID-19 remains of heightened
concern in the country. This includes
a “no contact” guest relations process that
ensures all guests can continue to receive
personal attention and servicing needs
without ever coming into direct contact
with property staff. The process includes
remote check in and check out, entry-free
amenity deliveries, and room servicing and
resupplying only when guests are outside
of the room.
14 | april 2020 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com
As for its safety precautions, the property
uses only CDC-approved grade cleaning
products and techniques, has increased
the availability of hand sanitizers
and frequent hand washing of staff, guests
and visitors, is more frequently cleaning
and sanitizing surfaces, door knobs, handrails
and other areas, and is sanitizing
restrooms, kitchens and other facilities
throughout the day.
Receives Grant
Volunteers from Atlantic High School
at coastal restoration field trip
The Institute for Regional Conservation
(IRC), a nonprofit dedicated to the protection,
restoration, and long-term management
of ecological diversity, received
a $1,000 individual Volunteer for Good
grant from the New York Life Foundation.
The grant recognizes the volunteer service
of John Campanola, Agent with New York
Life’s South Florida General Office in Sunrise,
who has been a volunteer with the IRC
for over five years and is serving on their
Board of Directors.
The grant was used to support a recent
coastal restoration field trip of Earth Science
students from Atlantic Community
High School. Students learned about restoring
coastal biodiversity firsthand by
helping IRC add Saw palmetto, Myrsine,
Florida privet and Spanish stopper plants
into the dunes. Students also worked to
remove nonnative asparagus fern while
learning about the root nodules full of water
that make this plant so invasive. Additionally,
students picked up trash from the
beach focusing on micro-plastics, which
with such a worthy nonprofit as the IRC, and we will continue
to support the good works they are doing in the community.
15 Days to Slow
the Spread
White House Coronavirus Task Force
issued new guidelines to help protect
Americans during the global Coronavirus
outbreak.
The new recommendations are simple
to follow but will have a resounding impact
on public health. Every American can
help slow the virus’ spread and keep our
most high-risk populations safe:
1. Listen to and follow the directions of
your state and local authorities.
2. If you feel sick, stay home. Do not go
to work. Contact your medical provider.
3. If your children are sick, keep them
at home. Contact your medical provider.
4. If someone in your household has
tested positive for the Coronavirus, keep
the entire household at home.
5. If you are an older American, stay
home and away from other people.
6. If you are a person with a serious
underlying health condition—such as a
significant heart or lung problem—stay
home and away from other people.
Today’s guidelines build on the CDC’s
general recommendations to help prevent
spread of the virus. Americans
should continue practicing strict personal
hygiene, including washing hands
regularly for at least 20 seconds at a time
and wiping down surfaces in the home
often.
Even if you are young and otherwise
healthy, you are at risk—and your activities
can increase the risk of contracting
the Coronavirus for others. Everyone
must do their part.
There’s no better way to protect your
family and your community than by arming
yourself with accurate, up-to-date information.
IRS Extends Tax
Deadline
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin announced
that tax day will be delayed from
April 15 to July 15. He made the announcement
on Twitter, days after announcing a deferral
on tax payments but not on filing day.
“All taxpayers and businesses will have this
additional time to file and make payments without
interest or penalties,” Mnuchin tweeted.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell
had also announced that, as part of the House
GOP plan for a next round of economic stimulus,
he wanted to delay the tax deadline.
McConnell’s bill also included provisions to
allow individuals making payments to postpone
them even further, until October 15.
On March 10, Democratic lawmakers on
the Ways and Means Committee sent a letter
to the IRS to find out more about any changes
for the filing season. “We request your continued
evaluation of whether there is any
need to extend the tax filing season beyond
the April 15 deadline,” they wrote at the time.
As recently as Tuesday, the White House
had detailed how taxpayers would be able
to defer tax payments but said that tax day
itself would stay the same. “All you have to do
is file your taxes; you’ll automatically not get
charged interest in penalties,” Mnuchin said
during that coronavirus briefing.
Taxpayers may be able to get a further extension
with a form 4868, which in normal
years gives taxpayers until October 15 to file
a return. It was not immediately clear how
the delay in tax day would change the extension
process.
Tax refunds
What remains unchanged after Friday’s
announcement is that taxpayers who expect
a refund can file right now and get their payments
once the return is processed.
In a follow-up tweet, the Treasury Secretary
encouraged taxpayers to do just that.
By Darien Davies
Delray Under $50
Most Fun Small Town, Most Crazy Small Town, Most Small Town that Feels
Like a Big Town. Delray has it all. With a bustling downtown, Pineapple
Grove area, and little nooks and crannies in between, there’s more
to do in Delray now than ever, with events and happenings
spanning from daytime to nighttime. While it can
seem expensive at times, there’s a great
opportunity to enjoy all the City has to offer
without breaking the bank. Here’s what you can
do in Delray Beach in April for $50 or less.
We’ve all learned a little bit about ourselves with social distancing,
good or bad. While this time has been difficult because of the
unknowns and whys and hows, it’s also an opportunity to take
a step back and reflect on focusing something we all can manage a little
better: our inner health. April is Physical Wellness Month and is a perfect
time (while being or having been cooped up indoors) to look at fitness differently.
That is, to realize that you don’t need a gym or special equipment
to take care of your body! All you need is a sweet little playlist, a little bit
of room to move around, and a creative spirit. If you have a yoga mat or a
towel, and a computer, you can find numerous yoga workouts on YouTube,
which range from the type of workout in which you’re interested (Yin is my
personal fav), and the amount of time you have. If you prefer a little more
action, no problem! There’s a fantastic chance that you have everything you
need in your house for a great heart-pumping workout. If you have noncarpeted
floors, grab two hand towels (one for each hand), get in a plank
position, and slide one hand away from you at a time, hold, and bring back
in. This will certainly get your core in tip top shape. Or, grab a stack of magazines
and do some squats or lunges. Don’t forget about the good ol’ pushup,
which can be done on a flat surface or an
uneven surface, by placing one hand at a
time on a low chair or step stool. Or, take
this opportunity to practice or learn how
to meditate. There are a host of ways to
practice and fine tune your physical wellness
this month, and hopefully it’ll carry
over into a lifestyle change for many
months to come!
Even though our local version of the nationwide Great American
Cleanup event, Keep Palm Beach County Beautiful beach cleanup, has
been canceled due to the Coronavirus, we can still do our part! April
is Keep America Beautiful Month and is a great time to still get outdoors and
take the very best care of our planet. In celebration of the 50th Anniversary
of Earth Day, everyone (not in groups, though!) is encouraged to remove
litter and illegal dumping from our public spaces, which includes neighborhoods,
roadways, waterways, parks, schools, etc. If you have a green thumb,
you can even coordinate with your local HOA or community improvement
agency to host a small tree planting, recycle event, painting over graffiti or
run-down building effort, or more. There is a great opportunity to demonstrate
your individual responsibility for taking care of our planet by joining
in this nationwide effort to make our neighborhoods and public spaces a
more beautiful, safe, sustainable and enjoyable place to live, work and play!
If you’re not sure where to start, pay attention to your single-use plastic and
recycling efforts at home, and then head outside in your immediate neighborhood
and see where you can do your part. Even bringing along a bag
with you for your next get-me-out-of-the-house walk and picking up litter
will make a great difference, especially if you encourage your friends and
fellow community members to do the same on their walks! Visit www.keeppbcbeautiful.org
for more information about the Great American Cleanup.
Let’s be honest, there’s only so much Netflix, Hulu and TV that you can
watch during this time of quarantining and post-quarantining. Good
news for us that in the land of 2020, most businesses are offering digital
resources for you to stay connected. One of my personal favorites is the
library! April is Library Snapshot Month and while the library isn’t back in
its full swing of offerings, you can still access all you’d
like online. Virtual resources include e-books, e-
audiobooks and e-magazines; music, TV and movies
via Hoopla, a digital entertainment service;
eLearning with the help of the Brainfuse HelpNow
free, easy and intuitive platform; tonline job assistance,
including the opportunity to practice your interview
skills, get resume help and research nationwide local
job search engines with Brainfuse JobNow; attend virtual meetings with

Brainfuse Meet; learn a new language with Mango Languages; practice
your schoolwork and receive homework help for free, live and on-demand
online tutoring, practice tests and more with Brainfuse Learn-
Now; and more! As you can see, the library is brought digitally to you,
wherever you are and whenever you need it, with complete access at
your fingertips. All you need to access these virtual resources is your
library card number and your four-digit PIN number. Technology at
its finest! Visit www.delraylibrary.org to learn more and chat with a
library team member if you have any questions.
Gimme the cheese,
please! There’s
almost nothing
better than a
fantastic sandwich,
unless it’s a fantastic
sandwich that is dishing
out ooey, gooey and melty cheese.
April is National Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Month and is a great time to either fall in love with cheese again or
fire up your already deep love affair. Instead of trying to find a restaurant
that’s open and can fill your fix, take inspiration from a local
menu and make your best grilled cheese in your own kitchen. If you’re
looking for a one-and-done location, look no further than Beer Trade
Co. Try and recreate their fancy BBQ & Bacon grilled cheese, which
is made with applewood smoked bacon, caramelized onions, cheddar
cheese and barbecue sauce on Italian bread, or the vegetarian Caprese,
with fresh mozzarella and heirloom tomatoes topped with fresh
basil and a homemade balsamic reduction Italian bread. You can go
grilled cheese rogue and try to make their Big Kahuna, with grilled
pineapple, roasted ham, pepper jack cheese and sweet red pepper relish
on Texas toast, or the Cuban, with slow roasted pork, fresh sliced
ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard on Italian bread. While those
might be a great few options with which to start, it’s also fun to get
creative with whatever you have in your fridge! No tomatoes? Sub in
roasted red peppers. Don’t have pepper jack cheese? Cheddar or Swiss
or brie might work! The good news is that you can recreate until your
stomach’s content. Bon appetit!
Whether you’re young or old or somewhere in between, there
are many reasons to love Spring. Starting the day with a sunrise
service with your family members is always special, an
egg hunt makes the most out of your hide and seek skills, and a Sunday
brunch or dinner hits all the delicious food notes. Since we’re still
dealing with the effects of the Coronavirus and our previously planned
activities are canceled, we’ll just have to recreate the holiday weekend
as best we can! Start with watching the sunrise service with your mom
and family (always a great way to start the day for me) and a glass
of champagne (second best way to start the day!) in your backyard.
Bonus points if you can find a service on YouTube to listen to. Then,
sneak about hiding the eggs for any kiddos in the family. They’ll get a
kick out of spending the first part of the day searching for their goodies,
and then the next bit enjoying their find. When you’re ready, put
on the apron and join together to make brunch or prepare for dinner!
Regardless if you’re a ham, hot cross buns and deviled eggs type of
family, or you make your own menu based on family favorites, the best
part about it is spending time together creating a meal that you’ll also
enjoy together. The holiday weekends are best spent with those who
mean the most to you, and even amidst all the uncertainty and social
distancing as of late, every minute is best celebrated with love.
The ‘Families First’ Coronavirus Aid
Package Approved
President Trump signed a second
coronavirus emergency
aid package into law March
18, after it passed with overwhelming
support from the Senate.
The legislation follows a first
emergency funding bill, which allocated
roughly $8 billion for coronavirus
prevention, preparation and
response efforts.
The latest package, named
the Families First Coronavirus
Response Act, responds to the
growing health and economic
crises with provisions for paid sick
leave, free testing and expanded
unemployment benefits.
Each of the agencies getting
funding must give a report on how
the money has been used within
the next month.
Here’s a breakdown of what the
act includes.
Free testing
The legislation seeks to make
testing for the coronavirus free
to the public (without having to
use deductibles or copayments).
It includes a variety of waivers in
order for testing costs to be covered
by either insurance or government
programs.
Additionally, it includes a
temporary 6.2% increase in federal
payments to Medicaid for states.
The Children’s Health Insurance
Program, for low-income children,
will include temporary coverage of
diagnostic products.
An additional $60 million will
go to the Department of Veterans
Affairs for testing veterans, $64
million to the Indian Health Service
for testing members of Native
American tribes and $1 billion to the
National Disaster Medical System
for reimbursing testing costs for
those without health insurance.
Paid sick leave
The bill establishes a federal
emergency paid-leave benefits
program to provide payments to
some employees.
It requires employers with fewer
than 500 employees to provide two
weeks’ worth of paid sick leave if
employees are unable to work because
they’re subject to quarantine
or isolation, are experiencing
symptoms of COVID–19, are caring
for someone who is in quarantine
or isolation and/or have children
in schools that have closed.
Employers themselves will
receive tax credits to offset the
costs of providing this paid leave.
Under the legislation, an employer
cannot require employees
to find a replacement worker for
themselves or require them to use
other paid time off.
For those who are self-employed,
there will be a tax credit equivalent
to the sick leave amount.
The legislation also gives up to
three months of paid family and
medical leave, equivalent to no less
than two-thirds of the person’s pay.
Unemployment aid
The legislation boosts unemployment
benefits, with nearly $1
billion in state grants to cover processing
and paying unemployment
insurance.
It also raises the amount of
assistance to states with high
unemployment for those who have
exhausted benefits already.
Nutrition assistance
Nearly a billion dollars is being
given to provide access to meals for
those without food security. Half
that amount will go toward funding
for the Special Supplemental Nutrition
Program for Women, Infants,
and Children, also known as WIC.
Another $400 million is allocated
for an emergency food assistance
program that will be available
through September 30, 2021.
Certain households will be
eligible for help if a child’s school
has been closed because of the
health crisis.
The legislation allows certain
waivers in order to expand who
qualifies for benefits through the
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance
Program and suspends the program’s
work requirements.
An additional $100 million will
be set aside for nutrition assistance
grants for U.S. territories (Northern
Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and
American Samoa).
his remote country estate deep in the Yorkshire moors. There, she
begins to uncover many family secrets, particularly after meeting her
sickly cousin (Edan Hayhurst), who has been shut away in a wing of
the house. Together, these two damaged, slightly misfit children heal
each other through their discovery of a wondrous secret garden, lost
in the grounds of Misselthwaite Manor. A magical place of adventure
that will change their lives forever. Also stars Maeve Dermody, Julie
Walters and more.
► Trolls World Tour - In an adventure that will take them well beyond
what they’ve known before, Poppy (Anna Kendrick) and Branch (Justin
Timberlake) discover that they are but one of six different Troll tribes
scattered over six different lands and devoted to six different kinds of
music: Funk, Country, Techno, Classical, Pop and Rock. Their world is
about to get a lot bigger and a whole lot louder. A member of hard-rock
royalty, Queen Barb (Rachel Bloom), aided by her father King Thrash
(Ozzy Osbourne), wants to destroy all other kinds of music to let Rock
reign supreme. With the fate of the world at stake, Poppy and Branch,
along with their friends - Biggie (James Corden), Chenille (Caroline
Hjelt), Satin (Aino Jawo), Cooper (Ron Funches) and Guy Diamond
(Kunal Nayyar) - set out to visit all the other lands to unify the Trolls in
harmony against Barb, who’s looking to upstage them all.
Readhead by the
Side of the Road
by Anne Tyler
Released April 7th
From the beloved and best-selling
Anne Tyler, a sparkling new novel
about misperception, second chances,
and the sometimes-elusive power of human
connection.
Micah Mortimer is a creature of habit. A
self-employed tech expert, superintendent
of his Baltimore apartment building, cautious
to a fault behind the steering wheel,
he seems content leading a steady, circumscribed
life. But one day his routines are
blown apart when his woman friend (he
refuses to call anyone in her late thirties a
“girlfriend”) tells him she’s facing eviction,
and a teenager shows up at Micah’s door
claiming to be his son. These surprises, and
the ways they throw Micah’s meticulously
organized life off-kilter, risk changing him
forever. An intimate look into the heart and
mind of a man who finds those around him
just out of reach, and a funny, joyful, deeply
compassionate story about seeing the
world through new eyes, “Redhead by the
Side of the Road” is a triumph, filled with
Anne Tyler’s signature wit and gimlet-eyed
observation.
Truths I Never
Told You
by Kelly Rimmer
Released April 14th
From the bestselling author of “The
Things We Cannot Say” comes a poignant
post-WWII novel that explores the
expectations society places on women
set within an engrossing family mystery
that may unravel everything once believed
to be true.
With her father recently moved to a care
facility, Beth Walsh volunteers to clear out
the family home and is surprised to discover
the door to her childhood playroom padlocked.
She’s even more shocked at what’s
behind it - a hoarder’s mess of her father’s
paintings, mounds of discarded papers and
miscellaneous junk in the otherwise fastidiously
tidy house.
As she picks through the clutter, she finds
a loose journal entry in what appears to be
her late mother’s handwriting. Beth and
her siblings grew up believing their mother
died in a car accident when they were little
more than toddlers, but this note suggests
something much darker.
Beth soon pieces together a disturbing
portrait of a woman suffering from postpartum
depression and a husband who
bears little resemblance to the loving father
Beth and her siblings know. With a
newborn of her own and struggling with
motherhood, Beth finds there may be more
tying her, and her mother together than she
ever suspected.
Sunrise On
Half Moon Bay
by Robyn Carr
Released April 14th
Sometimes the happiness we’re looking
for has been there all along…
Adele and Justine have never been
close. Born twenty years apart, Justine
was already an adult when Addie was
born. The sisters love each other but they
don’t really know each other.
When Addie dropped out of university
to care for their ailing parents, Justine, a
successful lawyer, covered the expenses.
It was the best arrangement at the time
but now that their parents are gone, the
future has changed dramatically for both
women.
Addie had great plans for her life but
has been worn down by the pressures of
being a caregiver and doesn’t know how
to live for herself. And Justine’s success
has come at a price. Her marriage is falling
apart despite her best efforts.
Neither woman knows how to start life
over, but both realize they can and must
support each other the way only sisters
can. Together they find the strength to
accept their failures and overcome their
challenges. Happiness is within reach, if
only they have the courage to fight for it.
Set in the stunning coastal town of Half
Moon Bay, California, Robyn Carr’s new
novel examines the joys of sisterhood and
the importance of embracing change.
health & beauty | pain relief
By Dr. Safranski
Taking Charge!
Your health is important, because it is yours. You have heard the
mantra, you only get one body, so you must take care of it. From where
I am standing, that is quite true. There are a lot of factors that go into
your health, but one factor that we have total control of is choice.
We choose to eat poorly. We choose to work out or not. We
choose to live life in front of the computer or television.
These choices, like all others, have repercussions. Being
sedentary is a choice and living with the effects of that lifestyle is
your choice.
What you have to understand is that when you seek out help,
you’re seeking out not only the healthcare professional, the personal
trainer, or nutritionist, but you are seeking them out for their
knowledge, experience and insight to your problem. Again, you are
at the crossroads of choice. You can choose to accept what they are
telling you, or not. One of these choices is going to require work.
Once you have made the decision to take charge of your health,
get rid of pain, get in shape, or whatever your situation calls for,
your next step is to assemble your team. My team? Yes, you are going
to need a team of people who can help you. Is it possible to do
things on your own, to help yourself? Absolutely! However, what is
the cost? When you were in school, you were taught by a teacher
to learn something new, at which point you learned the skill and
from there apply that skill into your life. However, that does not go
for everything, you can’t adjust yourself, and do your own blood
work, but you can do the exercises you’ve learned at home, stretch
yourself, and start eating right all on your own.
Your team. Your team should be comprised of people whom you
trust, people you vibe well with. Building that rapport with your
healthcare providers is important. Question them! If they are not
willing to take the time to teach you, are they really the right provider
for you? A good provider will also question you and your choices,
they will push you to make changes, think outside the box for you,
but most importantly they will put their egos aside to help you find
the best solution to your problems. Even if it means you going outside
their office to do so. The answer is not always a pill or a medication.
The answer to a lot of problems just requires work and time.
So, TAKE CHARGE! Make choices for your health that will push you
past your comfort zone and into a place where you are no longer in pain
and dysfunction. Take the dog for a walk, have a leisurely stroll with
your significant other. Take charge! Make change! Live your best life!
health & beauty | body beautiful
By ashley sica-de souza
Spring Clean Up!
The hot weather is here, and bathing suit season is upon us.
If you haven’t shed that extra layer yet, now is the time! I’m
sure most of you are familiar with the layer I’m talking about.
That “layer” from the holidays that you swore would be off in
time for summer. It’s never too late to get that body in gear!
Here are some tips to kick-start your spring and have you
feeling ready for that summer wardrobe!
The first and most component of shedding that unwanted
layer is nutrition. Keeping a daily food log of exactly everything
that you are consuming is highly recommended…
the good the bad and the ugly! This will help you easily
pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses. Be brutally
honest and make sure to write it ALL down!
Next, try your best to eliminate processed foods
from your diet and stick to 70-80% homemade
prepared meals (yes,…you can do it!). Food
prep is 100% essential in helping you reach
your goals! These meals should consist of
lean proteins, healthy fats, complex carbohydrates,
fruit and of course lots of veggies.
Having healthy food on hand at all times is
a game changer. The other
nutrition component is
water! Your body won’t
burn fat if it is dehydrated.
It’s such a simple
thing many people
don’t do. Drinking
proper amounts of
water will also help
to keep you feeling
full, help flush out
toxins and help decrease
bloating!
The second component is weight lifting. It
has to be done…period. Weight lifting is essential
to fat burning and your metabolism.
The more muscle you have, the more calories
your body will burn at rest. Ladies, I
promise you will NOT get bulky from lifting
more than five pounds. I compare
weight training to a sculptor taking a
piece of round clay molding it in to a nice
shapely figured. That’s what real work
does to your body. It gives your body the
“shape” most are looking to achieve and
that will not happen without picking up some sizable weights! I
know a lot of people who think cardio alone will do this and that is
the farthest thing from the truth. Although cardio has its time and
place (more about that next) resistance training is essential.
You should aim to get in 4-5 sessions a week, lasting no
longer than 60 minutes.
The last component is performing the right type of
cardio. High Intensity Interval Training also known
as HIIT is the fastest and most effective way to
decrease your body fat and show off all the resistance
training that you’ve been doing. The
best thing about this type of cardio is that
you don’t need more than 20-30 minutes
per day. The days of super long and slow
cardio sessions are OVER! HIIT will keep
your body burning calories for hours after
your actual session. This type of training
involves alternating between intense
bouts of exercise followed by low intensity
exercise. If you’re a beginner, you
may want to start with a 1:1 work ratio.
One minute on, one minute off. HIIT can
be performed anywhere…. outside using
sprints or stairs, on the treadmill, at
the beach etc. Depending on what your
goals are and what your body fat is, aim
to perform HIIT cardio 2-3 times per
week. If you’re performing it correctly,
that’s all you’ll need.
Take these 3 components of
eating clean (do that food prep!)
weight training, and proper cardio
and you’ll be summer ready in no
time. There’s no better way to welcome
the summer heat than with a
healthy, more confident you.
The Facts About
Coronavirus
COVID-19
By Darien Davies
If you’re watching, listening to or engaging in TV programs, social media
posts, personal conversations, podcasts and radio programs, you certainly
know that everything is all about the Coronavirus. Even though we have
information overload, there’s still a large amount of uncertainty about
what we know, what we do tomorrow, and where do we go from here? So,
let’s get back to the basics.
What is the Coronavirus?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Coronaviruses
(CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging
from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East
Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute Respiratory
Syndrome (SARS-CoV). Sound familiar? The newest strain, Coronavirus
disease (COVID-19), was discovered in 2019 and has not
been previously identified in humans. Coronaviruses are zoonotic,
meaning they are transmitted between animals and people. While
SARS was transmitted from civet cats to humans, and MERS from
dromedary camels to humans, the source of COVID-19 has yet to
be confirmed.
How is COVID-19 Spread and What are the
Signs and Symptoms?
People can catch COVID-19 from others who have the virus. The
WHO states that the disease can spread from person to person
through small droplets from the nose or mouth, which are most
often spread when a person with the virus coughs or exhales. These
droplets then land on objects and surfaces around the person, giving
the opportunity for other people to touch those objects or surfaces
and then touch their eyes, mouth or nose. People can also
catch the virus if they breathe in the exhaled droplets, which is why
it’s so important to practice social distancing.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, reported
illnesses have ranged from mild symptoms to severe illness
and death. Symptoms may appear two to 14 days after exposure,
and can include fever, cough and shortness of breath. Emergency
warning signs include having trouble breathing, persistent pain or
pressure in the chest, new confusion or inability to arouse, and bluish
lips or face. Please note that this list of symptoms is not inclusive
and it’s best to reach out to your medical provider for any other
symptoms you might have that are severe or concerning.
The Mayo Clinic states that those who have recently traveled from
or live in an area with an ongoing community spread of COVID-19,
or those who have come in close contact with someone who has
COVID-19, are at increased risk for contracting the virus. Serious
54 | april 2020 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

complications from the virus can include pneumonia in both lungs,
organ failure in several organs, or death. Older adults, or anyone
who already has a severe underlying medical condition (diabetes,
heart disease, lung disease, etc.) are at greater risk.
What is Social Distancing?
Social distancing is the effort to deliberately increase the physical
space between people with a goal to avoid spreading the illness.
According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, the goal is to stay at least six
feet away from other people, which will help to lessen your chances
of catching COVID-19. While there is some confusion about what
exactly social distancing is and how often you need to practice it, a
good rule of thumb is: practice it always, until informed otherwise.
Gov. Ron DeSantis recently passed a measure for all restaurants,
bars, nightclubs, beaches, public parks, and non-essential businesses,
to close their doors, reducing the opportunity people have
to gather.
Additionally, many people are working from home instead of the
office, children are being homeschooled, classes are held online, all
large events (including weddings, festivals and parades) are canceled
or postponed, and visitation with loved ones has gone virtual.
How Do I Protect Against Getting the
Coronavirus?
As of now, there is no vaccine to prevent COVID-19, so it’s important
to do your part to help stop the spread of the virus. Standard
measures include regular hand washing (for 20 seconds with soap
and water or an alcohol-based hand rub), covering your mouth and
nose when coughing and sneezing, maintaining a distance of six
feet from those around you, and thoroughly cooking meat and eggs.
It’s also recommended to avoid close contact with anyone showing
symptoms of respiratory illness - such as coughing and sneezing -
and to quarantine yourself should you experience any symptoms
or have come into contact with anyone who has tested positive for
COVID-19. Make sure to avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
What are the Current U.S. Stats?
The most current figures at the time of print show there are
15,219 total cases in the U.S. and 201 total deaths. This data includes
both confirmed and presumptive positive cases of COVID-19
reported to CDC or tested at CDC since January 21, 2020, with the
exception of testing results for persons repatriated to the United
States from Wuhan, China and Japan. Of the total cases, 337 are
travel related, 321 are from close contact, and 14,561 are under
investigation. While the outbreak originated in China, Italy has now
become the deadliest center for the COVID-19 outbreak and has
surpassed China with total number of deaths.
The most important take-away is that everyone MUST do their
part to prevent the spread of this highly contagious, potentially fatal
(for some) virus.
If you’re not feeling well, stay home. If you think you’ve come
in contact with someone is who ill or who has tested positive for
COVID-19, stay home and self-quarantine. Businesses that provide
essential roles to our daily lives, including healthcare facilities and
grocery stores, are open to provide us with basic necessities, but
we should only use these services if we must. Make as few trips to
the store or out to businesses as you can, and limit sharing your
space with others (healthy or otherwise). The sooner the spread of
the virus is managed, the sooner our country can focus on healing
and getting back to normal.
Siperstein Dermatology Group
Advanced Technology to
Check Your Moles
By Siperstein Dermatology Group | photos by melissa korman
The most innovative digital mole mapping and
artificial intelligence tracking analysis is now
available at Siperstein Dermatology Group.
Patients always ask us: how do you know which spots to pay
attention to during a skin exam…why that one? Of course
it has to do with experience, but we also use a tool called
a dermatoscope, and Siperstein Dermatology Group now has full
body photography with artificial intelligence coming soon to identify
changes in the skin. Technology is sometimes a beautiful thing!
Dermagraphix mole mapping (whole body photography) and
tracking analysis uses a high-resolution professional camera and
advanced software to map a patient’s entire skin surface, creating
a photographic baseline of all of his/her moles. Using this digital
mole map, dermatologists at Siperstein Dermatology Group can
more easily spot new moles and moles that are rapidly changing
–one of the possible signs of melanoma.
Mole Mapping is used in most of the melanoma clinics in university
hospitals and cancer centers to capture baseline images of
moles in high-risk patients. However, usually the physician is in
charge of tracking of these moles at each visit to determine which
moles are new and which may have changed. Now, in addition to
Dr. Nestor and Jennifer Richter, PA-C using the new
Dermagraphix technology to take full body mole mapping pictures.
Dr. Nestor and Jennifer Richter, PA-C
evaluating a magnified dermoscopy picture of a mole
the trained eye of the dermatologist, we will have the technology to
use Artificial Intelligence to track these subtle changes. The powerful
DermaGraphix system, which is in use at Sloan-Kettering, is now
only available at a few private practices in the United States. In fact,
Siperstein Dermatology is the only private practice in Florida, and
actually the entire Southeast, that will be able to employ Artificial
Intelligence to be able to track changes to patients’ moles.
“Melanoma, when found early, is curable. However, if detection
is delayed, it can be fatal,” said Robyn Siperstein, MD founder of
Siperstein Dermatology Group. “Baseline mole-mapping and AI
analysis not only helps to detect melanoma much earlier, but has
also been found in studies to reduce the number of biopsies needed.”
The doctors at Siperstein Dermatology Group are excited to
use this technology to continue to take great care of their patients
and save lives.
We sat down with the Board Certified Dermatologists at Siperstein
Dermatoogy group to answer some common question about
this state-of-the-art technology.
What is dermoscopy?
Dermoscopy is the examination of the skin using a surface microscope
to identify patterns that exist in skin cancer, especially melanomas.
A dermatoscope is a handheld device (similar to a small
flashlight with a magnifying glass) that your dermatologist can use
during your full body skin check. A dermatoscope is used to analyze
your skin lesions, helping to identify skin cancer as early as possible,
when it is most easily cured.
Who can benefit from dermoscopy?
Everyone! Everyone has moles, and dermoscopy is especially
useful for these lesions. It is also beneficial in people with a history
of any kind of skin cancer, particularly melanoma. As mentioned,
when in skilled hands, dermoscopy can help detect skin cancer
at its earliest stage, which is paramount to treatment and good
prognosis. It also helps us more easily identify benign skin lesions,
which reduces the number of skin biopsies that we have do perform
during your full body skin check.
Is this a special exam, or part of my regular
skin check?
This is part of your regular skin exam! We have our dermatoscopes
with us in our pockets ready to use when we see every patient.
During your skin check, we use it to further examine any skin
lesion that seems suspicious. It takes no additional time and is a
wonderful tool to add an extra level of thoroughness to your exam.
Jennifer Richter, PA-C viewing a magnified dermoscopy
Dr. Mackay-Wiggan using the HairMetrix,
the first AI-driven, non-invasive hair consultation
What is Dermagraphix total body photography
and how can I benefit from it?
We are the first practice in Florida to incorporate the Dermagraphix
system into our practice. Total Body Photography is a
series of pictures capturing the entire surface of the skin to document
all of your moles. We will use the pictures at your subsequent
examinations to identify any change in the size, color, or
shape of your lesions or document new lesions. It also allows us
to incorporate dermoscopy to capture magnified images of these
lesions. Additionally, in the coming months, it will utilize artificial
intelligence to identify changes in your skin between sets of photographs,
which is extremely important in recognizing melanoma
as early as possible. We are very excited about this new technology
and are thrilled to have added a new device that will help us
take even better care of our patients!
What other state-of-the-art technology is
available with this machine?
We are also excited to introduce the HairMetrix. HairMetrix
is the first AI-driven, non-invasive hair consultation solution that
provides immediate measurements of hair, without pulling or
clipping the hair and sending it to a lab! Our world-renowned
hair loss expert, Dr. Julian Mackay-Wiggan is using this real-time
analysis solution to develop appropriate treatment plans for her
patients. Additionally, after treatments or procedures , such as
PRP injections for hair loss, we can use this tool for objective outcome
monitoring.
Siperstein Dermatology Group (Boca Raton and Boynton
SAINT JOSEPH’S EPISCOPAL SCHOOL
Embracing Learning,
Love and Your Child
By diane feen | photos by melissa korman
It’s natural for a child to enjoy play time and exciting new
ventures. Yet, some schools are the last place a young person
sees as an adventure to learn and explore.
But that’s not the case at Saint Joseph’s Episcopal School in
Boynton Beach.
The school has two campuses – one for young children (six
weeks to three-years-old) and the main campus for ages three to 8th
grade. The common ground is rooted in the fundamentals of learning
and nurturing children so they can reach their full potential.
This is accomplished through small classrooms (average 13 to 20
students) with a teacher ratio of about one teacher per eight students.
But it’s not just the small individualized education they get,
it’s the quality of education and experiential learning they receive
on a daily basis.
The mission at Saint Joseph’s Episcopal School is to fundamentally
nurture the whole child.
“We nurture and enlighten the whole child with a focus on spirituality,
science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics (S-
S.T.E.A.M.). We also foster collaboration, critical thinking, and 21st century
skills,” said Kyle Aubrey, Head of Saint Joseph’s Episcopal School.
Children begin their educational journey within this comprehensive
curriculum.
Classes are uniquely different than many schools. The reason is
simply that learning at St. Joe’s is fun and engaging with teachers
who are dedicated and embrace their mission.
Academics are at the heart of St. Joe’s
Each St. Joe’s student engages technology - the key to S-STEAM
The teachers at St. Joe’s exude a selfless adoration of children that
makes the children glow in their presence. Children are riveted by
their teaching methods and hands-on approach to learning.
All the teachers at St. Joe’s are kind and nurturing with a holistic
approach to learning based on what is best for each child.
For example, the music teacher has a colorful rack of ukuleles lined
up for children to play, as well as xylophones, drums, a piano and
recorders. Students are encouraged to grow and expand their love of
music through the Orff Schulwork Approach, which emphasizes play
based learning.
If love makes the world go around, then it’s computers that keeps
it on its axis. That is why St. Joe’s has a Smart Lab, with MAC computers
and a Computer Lab with PCs. Learning is self-directed and mixes
wonderment with wisdom. Using software as their guide they made
Robots using Legos and wrote code to create musical instruments
out of cardboard.
They have a great technology program where the teacher is teaching
the 5th grade about circuitry so they can create electricity via a computer
to make music. The group is called Blessed Beats and the music
was divinely ordained by young children having fun and learning.
The art teacher is equally as engaging with a love for art and a way
of bringing out the creative ability in each student. They’re making
St. Joe’s students develop athletic skills in a structured and fun environment
3-D sculptures out of packing tape, engraving metal plaques
and challenged by different artistic mediums.
There are outdoor facilities for athletics and meals as well
as after school programs, tutoring, family activities and special
events. They have movie nights, festivals and projects that teach
students skills they need for a heightened learning experience.
There is Business Day for the 5th grade that teaches them
how to make a business proposal, raise money, use excel spread
sheets to track profit and loss, and a showroom in the gym to sell
their products. The 7th grade are planning a play about the Civil
War and the 8th grade is putting together Greek Games reminiscent
of the Olympics. There are concerts and creativity projects
that engage and encourage each child’s curiosity and talent.
Giving back and random acts of kindness are important themes
at St. Joe’s. Children do community service in different events
around the city, such as Empty Bowls, feeding the homeless, a pet
supply drive, visiting the elderly and other charitable causes.
The curriculum, programs and activities guide and nourish
children to become healthy, confident, and responsible adults
in preparation for High School.
After 62 years of teaching children, St. Joe’s is doing a stellar
job creating well-adjusted children who love learning and have
skills to succeed in the best prep schools and beyond.
“St. Joe’s is an exceptional atmosphere created for children
to feel safe, learn, and have fun, along with the Christian values
and practices being taught,” said one parent.
Others agree: “The personal attention from dedicated teachers
who really care about my daughter’s development have given
her tools to be a very successful student in high school and
university. They gave her opportunities to shine and develop a
positive image of herself in sports and the arts.”
A good education, safe environment, healthy mind, body and
spirit are important components of educating children.
St. Joe’s welcomes all nationalities and religions even though
it is an Episcopalian School.
Come and experience the wonders and excellence in education
and character building at St. Joseph’s Episcopal School.
This is the place where your child’s skills and gifts will be
nurtured.
AZURE DEVELOPMENT
Creating Dream Homes
On Land And Sea
By Diane Feen | photos by melissa korman
Brian Grossberg and Richard Caster put the “L” in
Luxury for home buyers in Delray Beach. Their high-end
residential and commercial projects have not only won
awards from architectural and historical agencies, but
they’ve also won accolades in the court of public opinion.
Brian Grossberg, co-owner of Azure Development
“We have 12 active projects right now - 11 homes and a
commercial project. Everyone wants to live in Delray
Beach because of its charm and walkable lifestyle,”
said Brian Grossberg, co-owner of Azure Development.
Grossberg not only grew up in a family in the real estate industry,
but his history is one of legends.
He was an Investment Professional at GE Equity (the private equity
arm of General Electric), served on the Board of Directors of
numerous companies and the Advisory Board of several venture
capital firms. He also consulted on mergers and acquisitions and
worked in Real Estate Tax Consulting for Price Waterhouse in Atlanta.
He has an MBA from Duke University, where he graduated
second in his class and was a Fuqua Scholar.
Both Caster and Grossberg have 40 years of combined experience
creating custom homes and commercial buildings that stand
out for their bravado and beauty. They are currently finishing up
Nick Bieber, director of construction
two courtyard homes on NE 7th Avenue (215 and 219) that combine
modernity and unparalleled luxury. Each home has a private
gated motor court, large wrap-around private pool, ethereal garden,
12-foot ceilings, all glass entry, natural stone and Zen sensibility.
Homes are 5,366-total-square-feet.
“Azure is creating an oasis setting in downtown Delray Beach. We
use lush landscaping and are known for exceptional design, flawless
finishes, sophisticated fixtures and superior craftsmanship all
within walking distance to downtown Delray,” adds Grossberg.
Their word is their legend. You know that’s true by the awards
that keep piling up on their namesake. Two townhome projects,
Delray Modern East and Delray Modern Intracoastal, received the
Design Excellence Award of Honor from the Palm Beach Chapter of
the American Institute of Architects. Both of these projects were
designed in collaboration with architect Jeffrey Silberstein.
One of their most personal projects – that won an award from the
Florida Trust for Historic Preservation – is the Azure office. Located
in the heart of Delray Beach on SE 6th Avenue, it was an abandoned
65-year-old Chevy dealership. Azure took the eclectic structure
and modernized it creating a viable and beautiful office space. “Our
office is an example of the quality and vision that goes into every
single property we develop,” adds Caster.
Also recently, instead of demolishing a historic 1930s home designed
by Samuel Ogren, Sr., Azure re-located it so the CRA could
use it for additional office space.
Ogren is the “Father of Delray Beach Architecture,” so it was the
perfect space for use by the CRA.
Azure also have a stack of esteemed reviews from clients. “We
can’t say enough wonderful things about building our dream home
with Azure Development. They did everything within their power
to make sure we had the exact home we wanted. They are timely,
responsive, meticulous and provide attention to detail as if it was
their own home. Our finished product has every bell and whistle
available and our home is not only gorgeous, but expertly and solidly
built,” said the Morris family.
Azure’s homes are what dreams are made of. They range in
price from $2 million to $12 million and are 3,500-square-feet to
12,000-square-feet in size. But it is the dimension and discovery
of purpose that make their buildings and homes works of wonder.
Grossberg and Bieber reviewing plans
One new project – that is still available for sale – is at 239 NE
7th Avenue. This modernistic architecture two-story townhome is
a refreshing new take on city dwelling. It has gated motor court
entry, private pool and gardens, natural light, 12-foot ceilings with
wrap around glass and expansive Loggia. It’s also walking distance
from Atlantic Avenue, the tropical beaches and the Atlantic Crossing
shops and restaurants. It has a white modern hologram front
designed in collaboration with Silberstein.
It is this innovation and elaboration that has Azure’s clients ecstatic
about their homes and office buildings. They have pre-sold
28 of the last 30 homes prior to – or during construction – of the
project. “We provide the highest quality and value to our homeowners.
We also customize their home to meet and exceed their
expectations,” said Grossberg.
You bet they do. “Building our Intracoastal Waterway dream
home in Delray Beach with Azure Development has been an absolute
pleasure. The house Azure delivered is absolutely beautiful
and has the finest level of design, finishes and craftsmanship. Every
aspect of the process has been handled with absolute professionalism,”
said the Makinen Family.
Azure is also developing a 24,000-square-foot “Class A” Medical
building in central Delray Beach on Jog Road. Located near the most
prestigious country club communities and the Delray Medical Center,
this high-end contemporary building is pure Azure modernism
with all the calm and connectivity that breeds harmony. The project
- called Addison Medical Centre - pledges to be one of Azure’s most
promising commercial projects.
Richard Jones of Richard Jones Architecture has this to say about
Azure’s building brilliance: “Azure implements a unique and successful
approach to waterfront development. By thinking outside
the box, they create, construct and deliver each residence with distinctive
architecture, excellent craftsmanship, and lasting quality.”
If you want to scale the heights of residential or commercial
beauty and sophistication, call Azure. They look forward to helping
you realize your dreams in our slice of paradise.
shears of faith
Whitney Smith…
Joe Ardagna…And More
BY diane feen | photos by melissa korman
There’s a buzz in the air at Shears of Faith. It’s not
the noisy sound of mother nature’s creatures, it’s
the ethereal edge of happiness and calm comingling.
When Shears of Faith founders Whitney Smith and Joe Ardagna
started this cozy hair salon on Federal Highway it
was a new era for both of them. Their previous center of
gravity for salon excellence was in Pineapple Grove.
Their defection to a new neighborhood a few years ago was a
quiet goodbye and an infectious hello to their new environment.
Clients seem to be very happy with this serene space that binds
beauty and balance.
“I moved to Maryland and came back to Florida to have Joe do my
hair every five weeks. He does beautiful work coloring, highlighting,
and adding hair extensions. You can’t come here and not laugh
and have a good time. Everyone is so special,” said Susan.
That is exactly the way Whitney planned this shop of faith and
friendship. “I thank God every day for giving me the opportunity
to open Shears of Faith and have the talent to care for others. Since
we opened here God has continued to impact my life and the lives
of others. I’m so thankful for the talent he has provided with our
stylists and associates. What a blessing it is for me to walk through
our doors and have the sense of peace that this is exactly what God
has called me to do!”
Whitney is revered for her talent and kind nature. Those around
her are astounded by her innate ability to turn ordinary people
into extraordinary beauties. When Kristen Spengler was planning
her 50th Birthday party her hair stylist of 27 years was unavailable.
Spengler turned to Whitney for a 20s flapper hairstyle, and
66 | april 2020 | www.AtlanticAveMagazine.com

within hours she created a glorious glamourous hair style
with feather headband and curls. “Most people need a trial
run but not Whitney. She took my fine hair and made it look
thick and glamourous. She is a magician. I come here every
four weeks now.”
The growth of Shears of Faith has warranted new stylists
and colorists. Amy Jenness worked with Joe for 23 years in
New Hampshire and found her way back to South Florida to
join Shears of Faith. Her expertise is color, foiliage, cutting
and making others shine. “I love helping others feel good and
transforming their appearance. I just gave a client battling
cancer her the first haircut after a year of wearing a wig. I also
taught her how to style it.”
Amy is famous for her blow-outs – just ask Valerie G. “I come
to Whitney for color, highlights and cuts. Amy blows out my hair
and it stays smooth for days. If someone doesn’t know what
they’re doing they can burn the hair, but Amy is careful and precise.
Whitney also knows exactly how my hair needs to be cut.
She knew it needed a certain weight by adding long layers and
hand-painted balayage to add a golden blonde. This is a calming
shop designed to pamper you.”
Valerie is spot on. Pampering and primping are part of the
beautifying process at Shears of Faith. But it’s also the center of
the socially spectacular vibe. “People come here to get their hair
done, but they enjoy hanging out here as well. The round table
is where everyone sits and enjoys the camaraderie, color and
community,” adds Joe.
Kierstin Poirier is also part of the Shears of Faith family. She
does hair styling, coloring and cutting – but prides herself on
the panorama of the entire experience. “I love playing a part in
helping someone look good and feel their best. Self-confidence
plays such a big role in our culture today - when I’m able to
help my clients get that boost of confidence because they look
and feel great – I feel great.”
Whitney and Joe are master stylists and colorists. But it’s
not just expertise that sets them apart from their peers – it’s
passion. That same passion is airborne within the entire staff.
It’s the reason Missy came for the first-time last month. “I really
like the way Kierstin highlighted my hair. I’m coming back
for sure. She was careful to take small sections of my hair and
wrap it in foil so there’s less breakage. I love it here.”
So does stylist Gabriela Gamba. The newest stylist, who attends
hair shows and classes, has her hand on the pulse of
what’s new in hair and color. Her sweet loving nature and
expertise in Balayage and foiliage make her the perfect addition
to this group of savvy hair savants. “I try to take the
skin color, eye shape and facial structure into consideration
when I do someone’s hair. I love this salon – everyone feels
so comfortable here.”
They sure do. “Word is out that it’s cozy and comfortable
here. It’s about friendliness, integrity and making people
look and feel great.”
Delray Beach Open
By Vitacost.com
Is A Hit!!!
More than 60,000 locals and
visitors streamed through the
gates at The Delray Beach Open
by VITACOST.com which delivered
ten days of electric tennis and
so much more at the downtown
tennis center last month.

The eagerly awaited annual event did not disappoint - the
world’s only combined ATP Champions Tour Legends event
and ATP 250 Tour event added a new twist in 2020 – the firstever
women’s match in tournament history starring Delray Beach
local and teen sensation Coco Gauff. The hometown girl stole everyone’s
hearts Valentine’s Day weekend amongst matches featuring
Hall of Famers and fan-favorites such as James Blake, Tommy Haas,
David Ferrer and other legends.
President’s Day Monday saw the show get down to serious business
as the game’s current ATP Tour stars took the court. The green
flag might as well have been red, white, and blue as the main event
was dominated by the home team with young American Reilly Opelka
edging Yoshito Nishioka (JPN), using a record 99th ace at championship
point to seal the singles title, while the Bryan Brothers closed
their Delray Beach chapter winning their 6th title at “The Beach” in
their swan song appearance.
There was something for all to enjoy at the event - like chilling onsite
at the Raeburn Winery & Champagne Lounge, the Shipyard Beer
Garden and partaking in Sipsmith Gin’s DBO Smash – the Official
(adult) Beverage of the tournament. Foodies found their favorites at
That’s Amore Brick Oven Pizza, Guaca Go, and tried Bit-O-Gelato’s
unique flavors including Nuts 4 Coco and Thai-breaker Tea.
While many tourney attendees went “gaga” for The Volley Girls and
Company, others who favored less hustle n’ bustle headed to a VIP
Lounge & Game Room with Clive Daniel and Boynton Billiards overlooking
the tournament grounds from the second floor of the clubhouse.
In addition to the on-and-off court action, there were several
not-to-be missed events, including the return of Game Set Pour, the
ultimate pairing event highlighting the best local eats and a mouthwatering
menu of beer and wine. And, there were also one-of-a-kind
dining/networking events in the Hospitality Pavilion, like the exclusive
Box Holders Party, the Chamber Bash, and Lilly Pulitzer’s Ladies
Luncheon to hob nob with the players.
If you missed the 2020 Delray Beach Open by VITACOST.com, the
best news is that it will be back next year so mark your calendar for
February 12-21, 2021!
Delray Beach chamber of commerce
The Delray Beach Chamber is
Here for our Village by the Sea
It’s an unprecedented time for our Community and our Nation. For
the first time in our 58 years of producing the event the Delray
Beach Chamber of Commerce has been forced to make the very
difficult decision of canceling the Delray Affair. But, sometimes things
beyond our control take precedence and we all need to do our part for
the greater good.
Here at the chamber we’d like to think that we are more than just a
Membership Organization. We are an integral part of The Delray Beach
Community and have been for over 90 years.
During this time of crisis we aim to be a trusted source of useful information
for our Members and our Community. Below you can find a list
of resources for information whether you are a small business or local
citizen. We will be updating our Website and Social Media constantly.
The Delray Chamber also produces Delray Morning Live, Wednesday
mornings at 8:30am. Delray Morning Live is a Facebook Live show hosted
by Amanda Perna and Ryan Boylston. We usually invite guests and
sponsors on the show to highlight upcoming community events or business
initiatives, however, for the foreseeable future we will be broadcasting
from a closed location at the Delray Chamber and providing late
breaking news, information and tips to get through this tough time. To
view our most recent shows to: Facebook.com/DelrayBeach
The Chamber is here to help our Members and our neighbors
through this crisis. We are already thinking about how
we can all come together again to celebrate our City and our
friendships, in person, when the coast is clear.
Online Counseling:
Therapy that’s Simple, Easy and Private
Online Counseling is the perfect option for this time when
people are struggling with concerns about “social distancing,”
and may be afraid of being in public places or stressed
out and anxious about the news. Getting therapy has never been
easier nor more effective. This option is also great for busy professionals,
those with disabilities, caretakers and stay at home parents
who may have difficulties arranging care for their loved ones or
simply want to avoid commuting. Getting comfortable and finding a
private place to talk has never been easier.
As a licensed mental health counselor in private practice, John
Davis provides online therapy via secure data transmission and
client privacy is his top priority. He utilizes state-of-the-art security
and encryption protocols, through Doxy.me, which is an online
platform compliant with HIPAA and HITECH requirements for online
therapy. Getting Doxy is as simple as downloading an app on
your phone and creating a private login. Doxy is also available as a
website from your laptop at https://doxy.me/patients. This allows
you to receive your counseling session in the comfort of your home
or office while guaranteeing your confidentiality!
Online Counseling is a proven, effective way to receive counseling
services from the comfort and privacy of your own home or office
when your schedule doesn’t allow flexibility for in-person sessions,
the commute can be inconvenient or impossible, or you want
to add an extra layer of confidentiality by staying in the comfort of
your own private space.
Shannon Eadon
My skill is
building
strong
teams and
connecting
with people.
CEO of Old School Square
Shannon Eadon’s orbit is
so bright you almost need
sunglasses to be around her.
The upbeat, can-do superwoman is always up for any task and
sees the world as a magical place.
You could say her superpowers were given to her by her
father G. Lee Thompson. “My father was my role model and told me
to make magic every day.”
And that is exactly what Eadon has done for most of her life. She
rarely sees roadblocks – and if she does – she just lifts them up
with her inimitable positivity and drive.
That is why she was just installed as the new President and CEO
of Old School Square. Running non-profit arts organizations is part
and parcel of Eadon’s raison d’être.
Before coming to Delray Beach, she was the development director
of Bergen Performing Arts Center, prior to that she was Director of
Development for Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, New Jersey.
There is a lot more to Eadon’s resume than these two high
profile positions, but navigating her resume is akin to scaling
Mount Everest.
That’s because it is littered with words like reposition, streamline,
fiscal responsibility, hired, trained, mentored, developed, designed
and executed. These words are not merely to fill the pages but are
accomplishments Eadon has seen to fruition.
“At Count Basie Theatre the CEO and I increased the budget from
$250,000 to $3.5 million. We did a lot of fundraising.”
Meeting new people and fundraising is nothing new to Eadon.
That’s because she lived in 16 different cities while growing up.
Her corporate executive father moved the family around every two
and a half years. Instead of seeing it as a negative, Shannon took
advantage of the diversity and dynamics of it all.
“I had to walk into a new situation and introduce myself to new
people all the time. I had no choice, I could sit in the corner, or go
out and pay, and I like to play. It really changed who I am.”
It also made her a fearless outgoing adult who thrives in
a multitude of positions. When raising a profile or funds for
organizations Eadon knows exactly what to do. “I am used to
sticking my hand out to say hello and get to know people. I don’t ask
for money, I ask for help to change lives, do good for the community
and be part of a solution to a problem.”
And so far, her place in the business world and non-profit
organizations is somewhere between a high altitude and a
positive attitude. She is goal oriented and laser focused on what
she wants to achieve.
And rest assured when Eadon wants to accomplish something
she plans a strategy and zooms forward. But not without her team.
“I changed offices. Instead of a desk I have a table. A table is much
more conducive to collaboration, more ideas come from around a
table. This is a team - it doesn’t work without all the players.”
A statement worthy of embellishment. “Shannon was laser
focused on our mission and understood how to reach people
and connect their interests to the theatre by highlighting
the history, mission and benefits of supporting us. She was
passionate about building relationships and always made me
feel like part of her team,” said Brian Wilson, former Manager of
Membership at Bergen PAC.
Eadon’s work ethic was installed in her hard drive early in
life. Though her father was a successful businessman (and CEO
of Singer) he wanted his daughter to understand the meaning of
work. “On my 16th Birthday my dad said, ‘Happy Birthday, where
are you getting a job?’”
Eadon made her own wardrobe after graduating high school and
commuted to NYC from NJ for her first job. Entitlement was not one
of the virtues Mr. Thompson passed down to his daughter.
It worked quite well in building her character and charisma.
Eadon was Senior VP at an ad agency and traveled the world. She
attended elaborate Manhattan soirees and often worked six days a
week 12 hours a day.
She also volunteered – becoming a board member, fundraiser
and advocate – for non-profits. She helped conservation, historical
societies, and the Monmouth County Hunt Racing Association (their
annual event attracted over 10,000 people and benefited 26 charities).
It is also where she met the love of her life, Gordon Eadon. “I
knew on our first date that I wanted to marry him.” And sure
enough, two years later they were married and now have two
grown children together.
While her children were growing up Eadon left the corporate
world. But she didn’t join current events clubs or take up knitting.
She started an events company - Exceptional Events - that specialized
in planning and catering weddings, charity events and parties.
Though she majored in marketing, Eadon loves art and the world
of possibilities that open up in that medium of expression. That is
why her new position with Old School Square is the perfect center
of gravity for this Florida newcomer.
“We are changing our programming to suit every demographic
in Delray. We plan to add rock, comedy, dance, jazz, local theater
groups and other things.”
Eadon also moved OSS employees to different positions where
their star can shine. “Moving people around to fit their strengths
makes everyone happy. People are now doing jobs that come
naturally to them.”
Part of this change is developing educational outreach
programs with Delray children. They will not only learn about
music but experience its inherent benefit in their lives. “Putting
kids in drum circles can change their heart rate and their
emotions from angry to calm.”
If the past is any indication of the future, Eadon will be the fearless
leader that takes OSS into the future with gusto and greatness.
“To do a job like this you have to be open and honest. You also
have to be willing to work seven days a week and fold chairs with
the staff at 2am. I don’t look at this as work, this is fun.”
Welcome to the party.
sausage—casings removed;
meat crumbled
2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
Pinch of crushed red pepper
Salt
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup grated pecorino cheese
directions
Step 1
In a pot of salted boiling water, cook the broccoli rabe until nearly
tender, 4 minutes. Drain and cool under cold water. Squeeze and pat dry,
then chop.
Step 2
In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of the oil. Add the sausage and cook over
moderately high heat, breaking it up into small pieces, until browned.
Add 3 more tablespoons of oil, the garlic and red pepper to the skillet
and cook for 1 minute. Add the broccoli rabe and cook, stirring, until
tender, 3 minutes. Season with salt. Add the lemon juice and toss.
Serve with pecorino. Can also be served over spaghetti al dente.
misc | ask the petxpert
BY Bill Piechocki and Dr. Diane Sudduth, DVM
Is My Pet Being Poisoned?
As proud pet owners, we often are concerned with our pets’
health. We worry when they have an “off” activity day, lose
their appetite for a day or two, maybe even vomit or have
loose stools. Sometimes tough decisions must be made in how to
react. “Are they sick” or just “off?” Veterinary visits can be costly
and economics and budgets continue to be factors in what we decide.
Many try to self-diagnose online, others seek the advice of fellow
pet owners or pet “experts” at the local pet store. If we could
understand the possible causes, our decisions would be simple.
All disease boils down to two primary causes, deficiency and
toxicity. It is a combination of both, working together that creates
a dysfunction in the body. Often it is only a short-term issue as the
body is designed to heal itself naturally. We are tasked with understanding
what our pets are exposed to, both good and harmful
and make the appropriate lifestyle changes.
Let me explain how these issues occur. The deficiency issue
starts with the feeding of a highly processed, low nutrient,
monolithic diet. The lack of diversity or varieties in foods creates
voids of certain bioavailable nutrients. Synthetic, chemically
added supplements have been the culprit of many pet food
recalls and pet deaths.
The toxicity issues are from many different sources. We can go
back to the synthetic supplements and then add in the plethora
of color, artificial flavors, stabilizers, stimulants and preservatives
that are not only added to the food but are in other ingredients
being used that are not even listed on the package. To add to the
toxic load are the chemical exposures that they breathe in daily,
such as government spraying for mosquitoes and other pathogens,
air fresheners and household cleaners. Dogs are also exposed to
all the lawn chemicals and boosters including the weed killers that
are linked to cancer. We need to look at the toxicity of drugs and
medication we freely use on our pets without understanding their
possible side effects and adverse events listed on product inserts.
This warning is being sounded because beyond cancer, liver
and kidney failure cases have become the main causes of death
in our pets. Liver and kidney issues are caused by a breakdown
of the organs ability to process and eliminate waste. If that waste
contains large quantities of toxic chemicals, the cells that function
are injured or die. If they cannot function properly, the whole
body suffers. Every parasitic drug is a poison, whether it’s for
fleas, ticks, heartworms or others. Every vaccine your pet gets
contains toxic heavy metals such as aluminum and mercury.
When our pets are fed an abundance of commercial single food
diets, the immune system becomes compromised and unable to
defend itself against the assault of the toxins. When we see our
pets not acting normal and appear to be “sick,” we need to take a
moment to reflect on our approach to feeding and medicating our
pets. Ask yourselves this…Did we treat our lawn or deep clean
our house? Did we vaccinate or medicate our pets recently? Did
we change foods?
In most cases if we look and understand what our pets are exposed
to and move to a more natural lifestyle, our pets will experience
a longer healthier life.
lady
A NO-KILL animal shelter.
Open Tues - Sun
11 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
This cute girl is a 1.5-year-old Chihuahua mix,
at just 13 pounds, she was rescued from
Puerto Rico. She’s a bit scared from all the
changes in her life, and she is a bit of an
escape artist so she needs a patient owner to
keep good care of her.
polly was happy and loved by a man in his
90’s but then she needed rehoming. She is four
years old, spayed, healthy, and ready for a new
life. Polly is shy but loves to be petted once she
knows you. She’s a pretty kitty with love to give.
Come on in to meet her!
This pretty girl is a sweet little pup in need of a
family and lots of TLC. Lady is a bit timid, shy
and unsure but she’s so ready to trust in a kind
person or family. Shelter life is chaotic, even
with loving staff and volunteers’ gentle care.
She wants to know if you can be her person.
All animals are up-to-date
on vaccinations and
heartworm tested.
Adoption fees $110 and up.
