INDUSTRIAL TOURISM - TOURISME INDUSTRIEL
Industrial tourism is understood to be the cultural tourism segment that, through its heritage or historical aspect (visiting old factories, mines and other facilities that are no longer working but have high tourism-cultural value), or living industry (visiting active companies), show us what the Basque Country is all about, its history and economic activity, recalling certain professions, helping us understand its urban development and interpret its landscape.

FORGE D’ EL POBAL
n the heart of the Bizkaia
I mining zone, on the banks
of the River Barbadún, we
find the El Pobal Ironworks, a
hydraulic factory where iron
ore was transformed into
metal and made into all types
of work tools (plough bars,
hammers, hoes, picks, etc.)
and domestic implements.
It was built in the early 16th
century by the family that
ruled the district from the
Muñatones Castle, the
Salazars, and it ran until 1965.
Its heyday was the late 17th
century when the workshop
was extended and the press,
channel, screen and hydraulic
tunnel were rebuilt. However,
much of the construction
and machinery on show
today dates from the late
19th century. A production
complex revolved around
the ironworks formed by
the forgers’ housing, that
originally looked like a towerhouse,
the mill, with two pairs
of stones to grind wheat and
corn, the bread oven, the
allotments and the mountains
that provided the charcoal and
wood.
El Pobal is a living museum
that illustrates two of
the most important preindustrial
activities in Bizkaia:
manufacturing iron and milling.
