INDUSTRIAL TOURISM - TOURISME INDUSTRIEL
Industrial tourism is understood to be the cultural tourism segment that, through its heritage or historical aspect (visiting old factories, mines and other facilities that are no longer working but have high tourism-cultural value), or living industry (visiting active companies), show us what the Basque Country is all about, its history and economic activity, recalling certain professions, helping us understand its urban development and interpret its landscape.

he Bizkaia Bridge was the
T first transporter bridge
built in the world with a metal
structure.
It stands at the mouth of
the Nervión-Ibaizabal ria, at
the point where the Bilbao’s
navigable estuary met the sea
until the 19th century. It was
opened on 28th July 1893
and its design was the work of
Alberto Palacio and Elissague.
Building the Bridge was the
challenge presented to Palacio
to solve pressing needs for
modern transport needed to
join the towns of Portugalete
and Getxo and replace the
traditional boat trip.
This urgency arose as Getxo
became a residential and
summer-holiday hub for Bilbao’s
bourgeoisie.
The challenge was no mean
feat for three reasons: it had
to bridge a distance of 160 m,
it was located at the mouth of
a Ria, blasted by harsh weather
and strong currents, plus
maritime traffic in the area was
intense.
In 2006, UNESCO declared it
a World Heritage Site as it is
one of themost outstanding
constructions from the
European Industrial Revolution
and iron architecture.
The Bridge runs between
Portugalete and Getxo,
therefore providing the perfect
excuse to visit these two
charming towns: the medieval
lanes of the former and the
sumptuous mansions and
picturesque old port of the
later.
