“Making Lauder Blooming Lovely!”
Despite the current public health situation we’re trying our best to keep our town looking lovely. We’ve been
adding pockets of spring-time cheer as well as working hard on one of our bigger projects at our new bed at
the entrance to the new Persimmon Homes development. Persimmon Homes kindly funded this project
which we hope everyone, including the wildlife, will benefit from. To help keep costs down, and because we
are always keen to re-use things wherever we can, we’re using the old slates from the Scout Hall roof to topdress
this bed. We’re hopeful that this new bed will be a lovely patch before too long.
During this strange time we’re also working hard to look after our mental, emotional and physical health and
luckily for us being outdoors and gardening are useful antidotes. If anyone is feeling the effects of cabinfever
and would like to be part of something for our wonderful community then get in touch as we have
litter-pickers you can borrow, flower beds to weed and watering to do. All of this can be done whilst taking
the essential social distancing precautions. Like most ‘In Bloom’ groups across the UK the majority of our
Team are having to self-isolate so if anyone else would like to lend a hand to keep Lauder looking lovely that
would be great!
LiB Postcards Thanks to Lauder Post Office for selling our new cheerful Lauder postcards. There are 2 designs
to choose from and they come with an envelope giving you more space to write.
Co-op Community Fund If you shop at the Co-op and like what we do then why not choose Lauder in Bloom
as your local cause for the Co-op Local Community Fund. Simply phone the freephone Members Services
number on the back of your Co-op card and they’ll be able to sort it for you. Thank you!
If you are dividing any plants this spring then we would be grateful of any donations for our Plant Sale later
in the year. Alternatively you can add any surplus plants to the Plant Swap box on Crofts Road near our
Community Herb Garden planters. Everyone is welcome to take what they can make use of. Thank you!
Contact us at lauderinbloom@gmail.com, find us on Facebook or chat to any of the Team who are often
out and about in our blue ‘Lauder in Bloom’ polo shirts. We look forward to hearing from you!

for vulnerable children. The definition of those classed as key workers is likely to change and be expanded
in the days ahead. The schooling arrangements will also change.
I will keep providing updated info, but don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions.
Constantly updated information is available on the SBC website and on the Community Council Facebook

The Steading at Blainslie to be A-Listed
We at the Tim Stead Trust are really delighted that Historic Environment Scotland intends to grade The Steading an A-listed
building. This is the highest category they have and it is a huge accolade. It vindicates what we have always known: that
The Steading is a hugely rare and valuable asset; one of which the Borders can be proud.
Also, the Scottish Parliament has contacted us to say that they would be interested in displaying some of Tim’s sculpture
in the Parliament building – we are delighted about this prestigious offer too.
We are hoping that these acknowledgements of the importance of The Steading will spur organisations and individuals to
help us to purchase The Steading which goes on the market next month. We are still hoping to be able to buy the building
for public benefit and welcome all help offered as we are well short of the necessary funds. Please contact us if you can
help.
Tim Stead was not only a world class sculptor and furniture maker; he was also a poet and photographer so we share one
of his pieces with you to celebrate the listing of his extraordinary and inspiring building.

It is through artefacts
It is through artefacts that
we gain knowledge of people long dead.
Our strata of time will be represented
by our buildings and artefacts.
The size of the middens will show
our wealth and it is the most
soulless and inhuman as well as
unnatural objects which will be the
truest statement of this century.
It is the brutal concrete city hutches
which reflect our culture, not Gaudi
who revels in the miracle
of liquid stone.

BRIGHT IDEAS
The Bright Ideas group, organised by Sylvia Knaggs, MEETINGS ARE CANCELLED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.
Updated news will be available on Facebook. Some samples of our latest projects are shown in the photos.
Channelkirk Senior Citizens - Funded by SSE. Toddleburn
Members got the season off to a start in April with a trip to the Clyde Coast. After coffee in Gourock there
was a visit to Cardwell Garden Centre. Whilst members explored this very large centre some members
enjoyed a beach stroll in the warm sunshine. Returning to Oxton via the Clyde Valley.
In June a trip into Northumberland we had coffee stop at Kirkharle which was a group of renovated farm
buildings with a restaurant, 2 art galleries and artist in residence. This was the birth place of Capability
Brown, where he learned his skill before moving south to create so many outstanding landscapes. After this
stop it was on the Belsay Castle and grounds some explored the House, others walked the grounds. Then
homeward bound with a stop at The Anglers Arms, where an excellent meal was had by all.
Our August trip was to New Lanark, a world heritage site where members spent some time exploring the
mill and other associated buildings, before we headed home
Our Coffee Morning was held in November and was well attended, the sum of £821 was raised.
We closed the season with an excellent Christmas meal at the Stair Arms Hotel Pathhead.

Macmillan Collection
Over the past year the Macmillan Collecting tins in
Lauder have raised £172.26.
A big thank you to the shops and individuals who have
a box on our behalf and to everyone who has donated
to this worthy cause.
Boxes are located in the Keystore, the Pharmacy and
Shaw’s Butchers for donations.
FUNDRAISING WALK
At the beginning of the year I decided to challenge
myself and found Macmillan Mighty Hikes. Each hike is
26 miles and they take part all over the UK, throughout
the summer months. They vary in terrain, some
tougher than others, and depending on weather, all
with beautiful views of the country. I have signed up for
three of the Hikes, with my Dad joining me for one, my
Mum joining me for two and Anne Clarke joining for one.
The ones which we will be taking part in are; The Lake
District Mighty Hike, The Northumberland Mighty Hike
and The Rob Roy Way Mighty Hike. With the terrain
and elevation of some of the walks it will take a lot of
training, which we have already started with various
walks around Lauder so far, looking to build up further
afield.
Macmillan is an important charity for many people
around the UK, supporting them in a variety of ways.
It has helped friends and family and this is why I feel
it’s important to help give back to this amazing charity.
For each walk Macmillan ask you to raise £250, which I
would like to be able to and hopefully more. To achieve
this I will be organising some fundraisers over the next
few months, with information on facebook and posters
in shops. Please visit our Justgiving pages for more
information and if you would like to support us: www.

Hello everyone! As we are all now 'social distancing' or 'self isolating' how about
we start knitting/crocheting some red, white or blue flowers (or any colours) to
help decorate Lauder for the VE75 commemorations (similar to those that LIB
so beautifully organised for Remembrance Day). It is looking more and more
likely that organised events will not now be happening so let's, at the very
least, make Lauder look lovely for passers-by and locals! It could also be an
opportunity for children to learn to knit or crochet while they are off school. All
flowers gratefully received, no matter what they look like!
A pattern can be downloaded from http://counties.britishlegion.org.uk/

do this can call Lesley on 0797 6242537 or email lesley@borderevents.com for a

Lauder Fire Station
As we move towards the lighter nights and hopefully
the better weather, we once again offer the facility to
anyone wishing to learn the life saving skill of CPR.
This can either be carried out at the Fire Station or
at your chosen venue. All it needs is a simple call to
the Station on a Wednesday night between 18.30 -
21.00 or speak to one of the crew members who can
get this arranged for a time that suits.
Unfortunately, we are losing another Fire Fighter
from our crew, Marc Alexander, as he is emigrating.
Marc has been part of the team for 10 years and we
wish him and his family all the very best for the
future. This takes our crew number down to seven
in the Station, the lowest we have been for 10-12
years so we are definitely on the look out for new
faces to join us. If you are interested or maybe want
more information about what the role involves,
don’t hesitate to speak to any of the remaining crew,
pop into the Station or look into it on Myjobscotland
online. We would love to hear from you!
Only two of the original crew are still at the Station
since it’s opening in 2000. Watch Commander,
John Connell and Crew Commander, Dougie Scott,
(photographed) who both attended a presentation
ceremony held in Linlithgow Burgh Halls in
November last year to receive their 20 years long
service and good conduct medal from the Chief Fire
Officer of Scotland, Martin Blunden.
For any home fire safety issues or job enquiries,
don’t hesitate to contact us.

Councillor Kevin Drum Obituary
Many within the Lauderdale
community will have been
saddened to hear of the death
of SNP Councillor Kevin Drum,
Elected Member for Leaderdale
and Melrose ward.
Councillor Drum passed away peacefully after a short
illness at the Borders General Hospital, on 7 March,
surrounded by his family.
Paying tribute to Councillor Drum, Councillor David
Parker, Convener of SBC said: “Kevin’s passing has come
as a great shock to his colleagues at Scottish Borders
Council and in the community. Although Kevin had only
been a Councillor since 2017, he was enormously well
respected by everyone across the Chamber. He had
gained a reputation of being an extremely committed
and diligent ward Councillor and was a genuinely lovely
man whom Councillors and officers had a great deal of
respect for. On a personal note, I have been fortunate to
work with Kevin in the Leaderdale and Melrose ward in
the last three years and could not have asked for a better
colleague. We have worked extremely well together and
he has been very kind in supporting me in my duties
and driving me all over the Scottish Borders. I know
that the wider community who have worked with Kevin
in the Leaderdale and Melrose community will be very
saddened by this news. All of our thoughts and prayers
are with Kevin’s family at this very sad time.”
Councillor Stuart Bell, Leader of the SNP Group at SBC,
added: “Kevin was a passionate supporter of Scotland,
our national football team, and the campaign for
Independence. He was frequently seen in a kilt either
marching behind a YES Scotland banner or following the
Tartan Army. How he managed to balance his passions
and his time was a mystery to me. He combined significant
responsibilities as Health and Safety Manager at Borders
College with the pressure of being a local representative,
and with speaking up for his constituents and causes
which he championed at Council meetings. Everybody
said to me ‘He was just such a lovely man’, and he was –
he was exceptional. He could be firm and resolute when
needed but Kevin’s bright nature and his cheerful, cheeky
smile invariably evoked a warm response and put people
at their ease.”
A family service was held on 23 March with a memorial
planned for later in the year.
Rotary Club of Lauderdale
Members of the Rotary Club of Lauderdale would like
to say an enormous “THANK YOU” to everyone who
contributed and supported our Santa Sleigh Collection
in the weeks running up to Christmas. Both Santa and
all the elves involved were delighted with the total raised,
which was an amazing £2129.20
Rotary exists to raise funds for worthy causes, internationally, nationally and locally,
and this year, just as a starter, we will be donating the sum of £250 directly back into
the communities which helped raise this sum (Lauder, Earlston, Stow and Oxton),
and with three causes already identified the process is well underway.
Our next project is already underway too, and you may, hopefully, be able to help us.
We are currently collecting items to be passed on to the medical ward for the elderly at
the Borders General Hospital. As many will be aware, some of our older members in
the community can find themselves admitted to hospital for short, or even longer spells
of time, and not everyone has a network of family, friends or neighbours to support
them during these difficult times. The Rotary Club here in Lauder has launched an
appeal to collect toiletries, personal grooming items and new or good condition
nightwear, slippers, cardigans, etc. In fact, any items that can make that hospital stay
just a little more tolerable for some of our older residents who may be feeling that they
are, sadly, being over-looked. The BGH has an excellent and sympathetic system of
assessing inpatients requirements, and everything donated will be passed on to those
who will welcome it. If you feel that you can donate any items at all then please hand
them in to The Lauderdale Hotel between a Monday and Wednesday when they will
be collected by club members, sorted and delivered directly to the ward.
If you are aware of any other local cause, an individual or a group, that might benefit
from a little more support then please get in touch with The Rotary Club, follow us on
Facebook, or drop-off a note at The Lauderdale Hotel where we meet regularly on a
Wednesday evening. Better still, if you are free and would like to get involved in local
fundraising, then please come along to any of our club nights, modern Rotary is open
to all, the only qualification is enthusiasm!

Lauder Herds Supper
Once again the herds supper committee organised a very enjoyable
evening of entertainment in the Lauderdale Hotel. The evening
started with a first class meal provided by the hotel and then the
speeches and toasts followed, all under the watchful eye of an
excellent Chairman for the evening, Charlie McCrirrick. Toasts to
the herds and farmers were given by Alec Telfer and Alistair Hogg
respectively and ably replied to by David Wallace and Ian Minto.
Musical entertainment was provided throughout the night by piper,
Callum Atkinson and singer, Bernie Armstrong.
Money raised this year from the raffle, auction and stick raffle
enabled the committee to donate £1000 to the McLeod family from
Westruther who are fundraising for vital research into the condition
Freidricks Ataxia which affects two of their young sons.
Tom Tinlin ended the night with a toast to the chairman for a job
excellently done.

As Lauderdale Scout Group move towards
our hundredth anniversary next year things
continue to grow well at Lauderdale. We just
completed our recent annual return and figures
for all age groups have grown again this year
securing Lauderdale’s place as the largest group
in the Scottish Borders.
Scouting has changed a lot since the first scout
group in Lauder 99 years ago: a few significant
differences includes us now having girls and
boys in all sections; the age range now stretches
from 6 to 18; the uniform doesn’t include short
trousers, or wide brimmed hats! But what
hasn’t changed is the fact that having fun and
adventure are still at the heart of all that we do.
Another significant change is that the young
people steer and decide on how their section
is run. In conjunction with Scouts Scotland we
evaluate how successful we are at following this
model of “Youth Led” Scouting and I’m really
proud to be able to say that Lauderdale Scout
Group is one of only a few groups in Scotland to
have achieved the Bronze Level Youth Approved
Award.
The next few months are expected to be busy
for Lauderdale with eight separate camps
planned before the end of the summer break,.
These include our first ever representatives to
the European Jamboree in Poland, a contingent
of 33 to an international camp in Derbyshire,
and our first Duke of Edinburgh expeditions.
With our expanding numbers we also plan to
start a 3rd Scout Troop for the 10.5 – 14 year
olds, we have some leaders in place to start this
but we have learned that larger teams of leaders
make for easier and more successful Scouting,
if you are interested in finding out more about
our new Scout Troop, or any other age group as
either a leader or a Scout please get in touch.
We can be contacted via our website
lauderdalescoutgroup.org or our Facebook
page “Friends of Lauderdale Scout Group”.

WOOPLAW WOODS
It’s Spring and breeding season is underway
at the Oxton Bird Gardens. Many of the male
birds are in their full mating plumage and
are looking their splendid best in the hope of
attracting a female.
And it’s not just chicks emerging! The visitor
centre is coming on by leaps and bounds. The
inside is now being fitted so why not have a
look at our Facebook page to keep up with all
the developments.
We’ve been quiet recently but that doesn’t mean we haven’t
been really busy in the background!
The cabin build is essentially complete and next step is to install

Last year we lost our web site and domain name so we are in the
process of getting a new web site and email addresses up and
running.
The wardens had been planning a Grand Wooplaw Relaunch but
this has been postponed, meantime. Look out on Facebook for

We held our last concert of 2019 in December at Earlston
High School. The theme, ‘A Woman’s Voice’, was music
composed and/or arranged by women. The choir,
accompanied by Claire Brennan on piano, and Claire Davis
on cello, featured a five movement piece entitled ‘Snow
Angel’ by Canadian composer, Sarah Quartel. Further pieces
were by Karine Polwart, Joni Mitchell, Annie Lennox and
Maya Angelou. The choir also performed a very moving
arrangement of Flowers of the Forest, by their very own
soprano Karin Scott.
We also hosted a very successful Christmas craft fair
(see photo below) on the same evening, enthusiastically
organised by Rosie Capper & Shelagh Chalmers. We were
astonished by the talent of the gifted crafters amongst our
members. It was a wonderful end to the hard work during
the year by our members and choir master James Robertson
and pianist Claire Brennan.
The choir was due to compete again in the Glasgow
Annual Music Festival on March 17th at the Royal Concert
Hall, Glasgow. This event features over 7,000 amateur
performers in music, speech, drama and dance. The choir
was to sing two pieces, Northern Lights, by Norwegian
composer Ola Gjeilo, and the Broadway classic the Rhythm
of Life, from Sweet Charity. We had hoped to build on our
previous success of first place 2018 and 2nd place last year,
but sadly, the event was cancelled. Instead at our rehearsal
on March 12th we treated the staff and customers of the
Lauderdale Hotel to an impromptu performance! This was
met with great enthusiasm from both the choir and small
but appreciative audience from the bar!
We are a very welcoming and friendly choir, and love to have
new members join us. There is no need to audition or to
read music, just a desire and enthusiasm to sing and join in.
If you would like to give singing a try, come along to Lauder
Public Hall any Thursday at 7:30pm with no obligation. You
don’t need to become a member immediately, give it a try
over a couple of rehearsals to see if it’s for you! Please email
join@lauderdalechoir.org.uk or use the contact form on the
website lauderdalechoir.org.uk.
If you would like to support the choir perhaps you would
consider becoming a Patron of Lauderdale Community
Choir. This is a scheme open to individuals, families and
businesses. The annual cost is £30, which includes two free
tickets to our annual concert, an acknowledgement in the
programme, and a chance to attend our social events, as
well as offering the satisfaction of knowing you are helping
a worthwhile community organisation. If you are interested
in becoming a Patron please contact us via the website
lauderdalechoir.org.uk or ask a choir member.

It’s been another busy term! Our Early Years children have
had some very exciting events happening in their learning
environment. Alterations have been taking place to turn
a large indoor cupboard into a fully operational ‘Cosy
Corner’ which will allow children to enjoy a warm and
quieter area within the nursery floor. Our thanks go to the
joiners, builders, parents, pupils and staff who have been
very accommodating throughout the process. We also
received an inspection visit from the Care Inspectorate
who came to spend some time with our pupils, staff
and parents. They inspected us on the Quality Themes
of ‘Care and Support’ and the ‘Environment’ and we are
pleased to say they awarded us ‘Very Good’ in both these
categories. A truly fantastic effort all round!
On the 1st December, we celebrated our 10th year of
being in the school-how time flies! To mark the occasion,
staff and children took part in 10 different activities
throughout the morning such as designing badges, pass
the parcel, tennis, a whole school dance and a drone
photograph. We even came up with our very own birthday
song! It was a lovely way to celebrate our milestone that
was enjoyed by all.
Then the usual hustle and bustle of Christmas activities
took place across the school. Our nursery children put on
show for a large audience of parents and carers, singing
their hearts out and more impressively, remembering
every word of the songs! Our Primary 1-3 pupils put on
an excellent nativity show called ‘Everyone Loves a Baby’.
They played their parts superbly and both their singing
and dancing efforts were highly praised. Our Primary 4’s
made their annual visit to the tenants at South Gardens
and did a wonderful job of entertaining them by singing
a selection of songs and carols. Primary 5 took their
turn in the spotlight to prepare for a fantastic end of
term assembly. They chose to tell the tale of Scrooge
in their version of ‘A Christmas Carol’. They performed
wonderfully to an audience of pupils, staff and parents
and sent everyone away with a parting thought about
the true meaning of Christmas. Along with some other
classes, Primary 6 and 7 headed down to the church
wearing their festive hats and tinsel, to sing a few of their
favourite songs to family and friends. During the singing,
pupils gathered a collection for our chosen charity ‘Cash
for Kids’. Our thanks go to the parents and carers who
kindly donated to a very worthy cause. Christmas lunch,
parties and a visit from Santa himself rounded up our
flurry of festivities for 2019.
We welcomed 2020 and it was straight into a new term
with lots more exciting learning opportunities taking
place. No sooner were we back, our annual 500 words
writing competition got our P4-7 pupils up and running,
putting their imaginations to the test. Then it was the turn
of our whole school Dance Festival and it really proved a
triumph. From nursery up to P7, there were dances about
the Rainforest, Shadows, the 1960’s, Zorba the Greek
and even ‘Superman’ to name a few. Even the staff put
in some secret practise sessions and surprised the pupils
with their own entry. The children loved watching them
don their shades and strut their stuff to ’Uptown Funk’. It
was such an enjoyable and uplifting afternoon.
Now here we are, on the run up to Easter and it’s all
go! All our pupils are currently engaging with a range of
learning experiences, starting with our nursery children
who are celebrating ‘Book Week’ this week. They are also
carrying on with ‘Stay and Play’ for parents and carers
and will be welcoming the spring sunshine to make the
most of the outdoors.
Primary 1 are going back to the 1960’s to find out about
how life was a little bit different compared to now. They
have been bringing in and sharing family photos and
learning some groovy 1960’s dance moves!
Primary 2 and 3 have gone a little further back in time to
find out about Viking life. Vikings have been drawn and
long ships have been created-let’s see what the children
think of the Viking food!
Primary 4 and 5 have been investigating ‘Ancient Greece’
and are loving discovering all about the life and times of
the Greeks-the corridors and classrooms are adorned
with greek lettering, vases and posters about some of the
very first Olympic Games that took place.
Our Primary 1 to 5 children will be sharing all of their
learning with their parents and carers during an open
afternoon to be held at the end of March.
Primary 6 and 7 are exploring Earth’s Materials and are
extending their learning as far as the Solar System and
beyond! They are creating some wonderful reports,
information posters and space propaganda artwork. It
is also an exciting time for these children as they start
to learn their lines, belt out the tunes and dig out their
costumes for their musical production of ‘An Inspector
Calls’. When this gets underway, we know Easter is only
round the corner. Good luck to everyone involved!

Unfortunately the Lauderdale Library is closed until further notice.
Notice of re-opening will be posted on Facebook and on the Library door.
When we re-open we will continue to welcome used copies of up to date novels and childrens books

Hello
Following the guidance received from The Church of Scotland, all church services and other activities held at
Channelkirk Church and Lauder Church will cease with immediate effect. Regrettably, this means there will be no
Easter programme of services this year.
The Church doors in Lauder will remain open from 9 to 5 each day, as is normally the case, for any who may wish to
go in for a time of prayer or meditation. Channelkirk is always open, and will continue that way .
There will be posters placed at Channelkirk and at Lauder Church. Please do keep an eye on them for updated
information and contact information.
The session thank all those in our community for their understanding and we join with you in our concerns at this
challenging and difficult time for many.
Even though there will be no services, Holy Week is, of course, the week leading up to Good Friday, when Jesus, the
Son of God, was crucified. We should always remember that He died that we may be forgiven for our sins, and was
then raised to life on that first Easter Sunday morning, that all who believe in Him may have eternal life.
We celebrate the fact that God so loved the world, that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in
Him shall not die, yet have eternal life (John, chapter 3, verse 16). God’s promises last for ever, so this verse of Holy
scripture is as valid today as it was in Biblical times.
Let us each celebrate the miracle of Easter, in our own way and on Easter Sunday remember that “Christ is risen! He
is risen indeed!“
I take this opportunity to wish you all a very blessed and peaceful Easter.

BVAC CLASSIC - FESTIVAL OF MOTORING, POSTPONED TILL 2021
With regret, The Borders Vintage Automobile Club has taken the decision that the club’s annual Festival of Motoring
due to held at Thirlestane Castle on June 7th, will be postponed until 2021. The current and developing Corona-virus
situation means that it would not be viable to continue to organise and run the event at this time.
The 2021 event will take place on Sunday June 6th at Thirlestane Castle.
The team would like to thank the many clubs and entrants who have already pledged their support for the 2021
event, as well as to their lead sponsor Brewin Dolphin for their ongoing support.

Lauderdale Historical Society
History covers everybody in Lauderdale!
We normally have monthly meetings on the third Wednesday
of the month in the Scout Hall opposite the Lauderdale Hotel
and enjoy hearing and discussing a wide range of topics. The
Society covers the whole of Lauderdale including the villages
of Oxton, Blainslie and surrounding areas and membership
or visitation is open to everyone, resident or non-resident.
Society News
Cancellation of the rest of the term
The end of the 2019/2020 programme, in March and
April, has unfortunately had to be cancelled due to the
COVID-19 outbreak. The committee took this decision with
great reluctance but were mindful of Government advice,
particularly concerning those deemed to be of higher risk of
catching a serious infection.
Future Programme
The March meeting was going to be a talk by Michael Scott,
about the naval career of Thomas Maitland, Admiral of the
Fleet and 11th Earl of Lauderdale. He joined the Royal Navy
at the age of 13 in 1816 and served through to 1873. In that
period he played an important part in the development of
the mid-Victorian Navy from sail to steam, from wood to
iron, from cannon to rifled guns and from iron shot to shell.
He participated in a number of actions, most notably the
First Opium War against China
The April meeting was going to be the fifth and final talk by
Eugene Brandeschi on his “Voyage of Discovery through the
Streets of Lauder”. Eugene has undertaken a tremendous
amount of research the length and breadth of the Royal
Burgh and has been greatly assisted by both fellow members
of the Society as well as many residents of Lauder. The
Society is actively seeking to publish this work in due course.

The Lauderdale Historical Society was delighted to attract a
number of new members during the year and now has over
65 members but we are very keen to attract others either
as additional members or as one-off visitors. You will find a
warm welcome and as well as hearing about topics relevant
to Lauderdale and beyond and there is always tea or coffee
and a biscuit afterwards as well as the opportunity to meet
the speakers.
Families can join for the very reasonable annual fee of £20;
Single Adult £15. Junior member under 17, £15. Senior
citizens and disabled £10. Entry for visitors is only £3 with

Lauder Lass and friends ...
Weather wise, it’s been a fairly forgiving winter, but a bit more frost would have helped to kill all the bugs
and make the ground slightly less wellie sucking! However, beyond the well trodden gateway, the ground is
not so muddy and the new summer grass blades can be seen to be peeking through, just as Springs flowers
have had an early growth spurt! It’s hoped, with all fingers, toes, paws and hooves crossed, the light dusting
of snow that we have had will not return, for this year anyway, just as we hope the water table will drop
resulting in reduced flooding, but more importantly much less ‘wellie stealing mud!’
Christmas seems like months ago but once again Lauder Lass and her friends were spoilt with many a festive
treat left in boxes and bags. So, a big thank you, you know who you all are, for the carrots, polo’s, treacle
treats, horsey sweets, dog biscuits/chews, the cat treats, old blankets and duvets. The pigs would also like to
say thank you for their root vegetables. We suspect all the animals would just love to have Christmas every
day but then, like humans, they wouldn’t appreciate those special occasions and would just take everything
for granted, but then again, this taking for granted business is more of a human trait than an animals!
All an animal really asks for is to wake up happy, to have the the option of being protected
from the elements, to have access to fresh water and food but above all to know it is
cared for and understood – animals don’t ask for much really do they?
As long as a human wakes up, with a roof over their head, has clothes to wear,
access to running water and food, in theory life should be good and one should be thankful!
Appreciate everything you have today, for you never know what tomorrow might not bring.
So perhaps a little suggestion - just for a while each day why not turn off the television, put away your
mobile phone, put away your lap top or iPad. Take a look around you and ask yourself - what do you really
need in life today? Computers, iPads and mobiles will be here tomorrow, your family and pets might not!
Very few animals have an addiction for modern day technology, they just have an addiction for their
owners or carers, please, increase your time with your family or pets and not your technical gadgets.
On behalf of many a pet who seem to live in many more hours of silence
or wishing he or she was your mobile phone! Thank you.

HORSE OF THE YEAR SHOW
Amy Morris had a good run at the winter Premier shows taking a win in the newcomers with her home produced RS
Cassini, he has just stepped up to the premier shows.
She has had a good few placing on Tobar king and stepped up to the winter JA classics which start at 1m30. She was very
unlucky to tip one pole to finish 5th, but we were very pleased.
It’s now the Royal Highland Show qualifier time of year again and Amy Morris and Tobar King have secured their place
at RHS 2020 by taking the win in the first qualifier. They took three seconds off the time in a quick jump off to make
sure they will be at the final this year! They have a great partnership but he is quite quirky and doesn’t like the rider
mounting so once Amy is on, she has to stay on so she doesn’t get the chance to go in to check over her jump off course!
Amy now has two novice ponies to try and qualify for the JC class.
Megan proved she could keep up with her sister at a mid week trip down to Alnwickford equestrian centre during their
school mid term break. Megan now rides her 16.1hh grey mare Lets Hope II, as in BS once you’re 16 you must come off
ponies. At the moment even getting her clean is a struggle with all the snow and ice up here on the farm.
It proved to be a very worthwhile trip, though, as they picked up a 3rd place in the newcomers with a lovely double clear
and then a win in the Fox Hunter Class with some cracking turns, proving that they are quite a partnership even in this
early stage of their time together. They are now aiming at the Highland Show qualifiers as well so its going to be a busy
couple of months ahead!

Lauderdale Community Council
Lauderdale Community Council would firstly like to send their
condolences to Councillor Kevin Drum's family. Kevin was
extremely attentive to the issues passed on to him and will be
sorely missed by all.
Jim Fraser of Resilient Communities gave a very interesting presentation on how
Resilient Communities works, what a benefit it is to the local community and how each
Community Council can apply. It was agreed that in view of the recent flooding in Hawick
there could be a need for a group like this. There were some leaflets and a 'resident'
questionnaire put in the the Lauder Post Office for the Community, but if you require an
additional copy please contact us. Keep a look out for updates on this topic
Plans for the Celebration of 75th Anniversary of VE Day (8th, 9th and 10th May 2020)
are on hold until the Corona-virus crisis is over.
Every month there are updates from LiB (Lauder in Bloom) as well as The Christmas
Tree Lights Group and we would like to thank all Volunteers who continue to work hard
behind the scenes for Lauderdale.

The Lauderdale Limpers running club continues to grow in
numbers with new comers and returnees arriving almost
on a weekly basis. The monthly Sunday breakfast social
runs also continue to be popular, with runs organised
that allowed runners to discover the scenic views up and
around the Eildons, River Tweed and Jubilee Path.
Training for the Lauderdale Limpers continues to be held
on a Tuesday, with juniors meeting at the Lauder primary
school, training starting at 18:15 and lasting for one hour.
Seniors meet at the pavilion at 19:30 with a variety of
training session being held in; rain, sleet or snow, for one
hour.
Over 100 enthusiastic runners took part in the annual
January 2nd social run, from Lauder to Melrose this year,
an event that is jointly organised by Gala Harriers and
Lauderdale Limpers. Due to its popularity runners from
many of the other local running clubs also took part.
The route was split into 3 sections, with the starts being:
09:30 (10 miles) at the Lauder Public Park pavilion, Blue
Cairn (4 miles in) and Mosshouses (6 miles in), the end
being at the Melrose Rugby Club.
Soon after this, the “Run off the Christmas Pudding”
13k event took place in very mild and calm conditions,
on the 5th of January. 123 runners crossed the finishing
line with the first Limper home (16th overall) being Chloe
Summerfield.
Seniors and juniors alike
enjoyed success in the
Borders Cross Country
Series, with the first
event in the series being
held in Lauder, the last at
Chirnside on the 8th of
March. Congratulations to
all our runners at this year’s
winter cross country series.
Limpers’ ladies finished
1st overall team whilst the
men were runners up to
Gala Harriers. This year’s
Marc Wilkinson
ladies captain, Chloe, was
second lady.
Limpers also represented their club at the following
events; East Lothian Open Cross Country series, Carnethy
5 Hill Race, Lilliesleaf 10km, the Heart Burn Hill Run,
Feel the Burns amongst the various events entered. A
few even ventured overseas with the Santa Cruz de La
Palma 10km (Rachel Macaleese) and the 2020 GIG Malta
Marathon (Calum Stewart) events being enjoyed.
The Lauderdale Limpers - report from Jim Pearson
Without question a huge success for the Limpers was
the achievement of the Couch to 5k training sessions
coached by Graeme Sutherland. The plan was to meet,
early January, at the Lauderdale Hotel to brief those that
were interested. It quickly became evident that this was
going to be a popular session as the car park filled up,
first with cars then with people as an impressive 55 new
runners excitedly gathered on the cold winters evening!
After the briefing they all set off on their first session, led
by Limper’s coach, Graeme, supported by club members
Annie Weir and Sheila D’Andrea.
Running is not everything! Early in March Lauderdale
Limpers’ Sarah Sutherland supported the amazing Corrine
Hutton and her colleagues at the Meadows (Edinburgh)
half marathon. Corrine lost both feet and hands due to
sepsis and has recently had a hand transplant. Sarah
supported her and her colleagues as they completed the
event in around 3 hours, with Corrine wearing blades as
she cannot compete wearing prosthetic legs. As some
will already know, the club supported Corrine with her
climb up Kilimanjaro a few years ago. We all recognise
the difficulty for “runners” to compete in and complete
these events but to finish these demanding events with
prosthetic limbs/ blades is to be admired.
Sarah is supporting the Finding Your Feet charity. This
charity provides support for families or individuals
affected by amputation or limb absence through a
range of sporting initiatives and social inclusion projects
designed to positively affect both physical and mental
wellbeing. It is well recognised that isolation is a huge
problem for many amputees.

this summer and are very much looking forward to the
2020 visitor season and welcoming visitors back to the
castle over the summer months. We have just launched a
bumper programme of events and are unveiling our new
School Room Toy Museum.
Our collection of historic toys is now in a new space
with updated displays. Children can raid our dressing up
box and see what their Grandparents used to play with
while adults can lose themselves reminiscing about their
childhood. In the main part of the castle we are also
introducing a new Children’s Trail.
This year we plan to open the castle from 30th May and
you will now be able to visit seven days a week right
through the summer. Our gift shop has some new lines
and our tea room will be open daily serving refreshments
and light lunches to all visitors whether you are going
round the castle or not.
We are keeping our fingers crossed for some lovely
summer sunshine for our series of open-air events.
The BVAC Classic – Festival of Motoring on Sunday 7th
June has been cancelled but we are optimistic that two
open-air theatre events will go ahead. Chapterhouse will
be bringing their family-friendly production of Alice in
Wonderland on 19th July and bicycle-riding, travelling
troupe The Handlebards will visit on 18th August with
their production of Macbeth.
For the more adventurous, you have the opportunity
to climb one of the estate’s largest trees during our
Tree Climbing Weekend on 8th and 9th of August. The
popular Wild Outdoors Activity Camps for children
will also be taking place both at Easter and during the
Summer holidays. The annual Scottish National Rifle
Championships which are held every year at the castle
are being revamped and will be open to spectators with
lots of additional activities. Come and see the superb
marksmanship between 28th of June and 3rd of July.
Renowned artist Frances Bell will be putting on an
exhibition of her recent work between 3rd and 5th of
September. Finally, to complete our events programme,
we are teaming up with local restaurant Provender to
hold two Pop-Up evenings in the castle’s Vaulted Cellar
on 3rd and 4th of July.
The castle is open year-round for events and our holiday
apartments can also be booked if you have family and
friends looking to stay in the local area. Please check
our website www.thirlestanecastle.co.uk and follow
us on social media for more information on our events
and open season as the COVID-19 situation continues to
unfold.
