Five exceptional reads (and one fine, fine wine!)
You’ll smell fresh lime zest,
elderflower, freshly cut grass
and sweet bell pepper; you’ll
taste Cape gooseberry and
green melon... Steenberg
Sauvignon Blanc 2019 is
vibrant and fresh and lively.
Just like the conversation at
book club. Around R145 from
steenbergfarm.com
In Grown Ups, Marian Keyes introduces us to the Cawseys. Two brothers, their lovely, talented
wives and a host of children... they’re a happy bunch. But under the surface, things are a little
murky. Bulimia. Compulsive shopping. One adoring husband, the other a bit of a sod. When
secrets are revealed they all have to take a good look at themselves. A wonderful read.
Penguin, R220 • After her entire family is gunned down following her
journalist husband’s tell-all profile about the drug lord of a new cartel,
Lydia Quixano Pérez is forced to flee with her eight-year-old son. The
two soon find themselves transformed into migrants, having to ride
La Bestia... trains that make their way north toward the United States,
the only place they think they’ll be safe. A story about a mother on
the run – all too real, completely heartbreaking, Jeanine Cummins’
American Dirt is absolutely gripping (and is massively controversial in
the USA). Headline, R302 • Every morning, four women go for a swim
at an Australian beach. Theresa with two kids and a disintegrating
marriage, lonely widow Marie, Elaine from England who’s finding it
hard to settle, and 25-year-old Leanne with only herself to rely on.
The women become friends in The Shelly Bay Ladies Swimming
Circle – a heart-warming tale of survival, laughter and true friendship
through good times and (sometimes very) bad. Sophie Green has
written a gorgeously fulfilling story. Little Brown, R325 • Who Did You
Tell? is Lesley Kara’s dark psychological thriller about Astrid, who, in
her battle against alcoholism, reluctantly moves back in with her
mother. Astrid’s focusing on recovery, going to meetings, confessing
her misdeeds, making amends to those she’s wronged. But someone
knows exactly what Astrid’s running from and won’t stop until she
learns that some mistakes can’t be corrected – mistakes you have to
pay for. Penguin Random House, R290 • Hiding from their stepfather
with his younger brother, Michael sees his stepfather driven away in
the trunk of a stranger’s car. As a witness to what results in a murder,
Michael is in danger – and as more bodies appear, it becomes clear
the killer wants vengeance. Karen Rose’s Into the Dark is a terrifically
gripping read! Little Brown, R180.
FINALLY, A FAMILY
After years of struggling to fall pregnant, Chantelle and her husband, former
Mr South Africa John Owens, are the proud parents of little Jenica Jade.
But the journey was anything but easy. We caught up with the Amberfield mom to
find out more about their IVF journey and happy ending.
Local model, graphic designer
and marketer, Chantelle
Owens and her husband
John’s love story sounds like
something out of a fairy tale.
The couple met while John was
a judge at a modelling contest
Chantelle took part in. There was an
instant connection and they went
on their first date the very next day.
Shortly after the couple got married
and although Chantelle became an
instant mom to John’s daughter Blake,
the couple knew they wanted to start
a family of their own. But, what was
supposed to be the best time of their
lives, time and again ended in tears
and heartbreak. Chantelle suffers from
endometriosis and although they
knew becoming parents wouldn’t be
an easy journey, they never expected
it would take this long.
“When after two years we still
weren’t pregnant, we went to see
a fertility specialist and I found out
that apart from endometriosis, I also
had premature ovarian failure. We
were told that our chances of ever
falling pregnant naturally was about
5 percent. Our only choice was IVF,”
29-year-old Chantelle says.
“Endometriosis is a very painful,
chronic condition where the
endometrial tissue not only grows
inside the uterus but also forms
in spots outside the uterus. The
tissue can be found on the ovaries,
the fallopian tubes, the ligaments
supporting the uterus and even in the
pelvic opening. It can also, in extreme
cases, be found on the bladder,
intestines or on old internal scars
caused by operations or laparoscopies.
I’ve had four laparoscopies myself, the
first at the age of 17,” Chantelle says.
10 Get It Pretoria April 2020
The cause of endometriosis is not yet
fully known and a diagnosis often only
result after numerous surgeries. It is
treated using a variety of medication
but mostly surgery or a diagnostic
laparoscopy is needed,” Chantelle adds.
The IVF-treatment was brutal and
Chantelle was put on medical
menopause for three months before
the process could begin. It took about
six months, but finally there was some
good news.
After many back-and-forth discussions,
Chantelle and John decided to
openly share their IVF and pregnancy
journey with the world. “It wasn’t an
easy decision as it is deeply personal
and emotional. But God placed it
on our hearts to share our journey.
We wanted to share our hope and
knowledge about the process with
others. There is a stigma around
infertility and people don’t know how
many people struggle with it. We
should talk more openly about it, and
should definitely not struggle through
it alone,” Chantelle adds.
They started the Facebook group
Owens IVF Journey and have since
received lots of feedback. “The
amount of people who go through
the infertility journey or have already
been through it, caught us off guard,”
she says.
In November last year Chantelle gave
birth to a baby girl, Jenica Jade Owens,
and their family was complete. The
pregnancy was, for the most part,
smooth sailing. “I loved being pregnant
and the experience was everything
and more I always dreamt about,”
Chantelle says.
On 38 weeks and five days Chantelle
went into labour. But after 12
agonising hours she only managed to
dilate 2cm. Her body went into shock
and the baby’s heart rate dropped.
She was rushed to theatre for an
emergency C-section.
“Her name, Jenica, means ‘God’s
gracious gift’ – exactly what she is
to us. It is also the female form of
John. Her second name, Jade, is
John’s favourite colour and it’s also
a precious stone, which indicates
how precious she is to us,” Chantelle
explains her name.
To Chantelle, being able to be a mom
is extra special. “Motherhood to me
means lots of sacrifice but it’s also the
biggest privilege. To be able to be a
mom changes your whole being and
soul. You will never be able to be the
same woman before and after having
children,” she says.
To the Owens, family is everything. But,
not necessarily blood-related. “I have
friends that are like family to me – they
keep you grounded and provide a
feeling of belonging,” Chantelle says.
Alone time for the happy parents is
very important and Chantelle and
John try to catch-up over a cup of
coffee at night after Jenica falls asleep
and plan regular date nights where
Chantelle’s mom babysits.
To those dreaming of one day
holding their perfect little bundles
of joy, Chantelle has some words of
encouragement.
“I know the fertility journey is anything
but easy. It’s a road full of lots of
uncertainty, but I want to say to every
woman who is currently still waiting
on their little miracle, to never lose
hope. There is nothing one can say to
make it any easier, but just know – you
are not alone.”

SPOIL THE KIDS...
WITHOUT (ALL OF THE) GUILT
Keeping the kids busy over the weekends and offering them health(ier) treats are on top
of the list for most moms. Here are a few recipes you and the kids can try this weekend.
The kids will love it!
Carrot cupcakes –
A whole lot of love in a cupcake
Serves: 9 cupcakes
Recipe courtesy of BODY BEAUTIFUL SOUTH AFRICA / Photographer: Robyn Brown Photography
For more yummy recipes visit www.bodybeautifulsa.com or send an
email to lauren@bodybeautifulsa.com
For the cupcake batter you’ll need:
1½ cups almond flour; 1 tsp baking powder;
½ tsp baking soda; ½ tsp sea salt; ¼ tsp ground
ginger; ½ tsp cinnamon; ¼ tsp nutmeg;
3 eggs; 1/3 cup maple syrup; ¼ cup coconut oil
(melted); ¼ tsp pure vanilla extract; 1½ cups
grated carrot
For the Cashew “Cream Cheese” frosting
you’ll need:
1 cup cashews (soaked for 2 hours or
overnight); 4 tbsps unsweetened dairy-free
milk; 2 tbsps lemon juice; 2 tbsps maple syrup;
1 tbsp coconut oil; a pinch of sea salt
Optional toppings:
Cacao nibs; coconut flakes; lemon zest
To make:
Mix together the dry ingredients (almond
flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ginger,
cinnamon and nutmeg). Ensure the baking
soda is mixed in very well, otherwise it can turn
the carrots green.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the wet
ingredients (eggs, maple syrup, coconut oil and
vanilla extract).
Stir the dry ingredients into the wet mix, and
then fold in the grated carrots.
Once everything is well combined, scoop
¼ cup of batter into a lined or oiled muffin tin,
bake in a 180°C oven for 23-25 minutes, or until
an inserted toothpick comes out clean.
As the cupcakes are baking or cooling, prepare
the icing by blending all ingredients in a
blender or food processor until a smooth and
silky texture forms.
Once the cupcakes are cool, ice them using an
offset spatula or spoon, or with a piping bag
(you can make this out of a Ziploc bag).
Top with cacao nibs, coconut flakes or lemon
zest, or leave them plain.
Plum brownies
Makes: 16 squares
You’ll need:
170g butter; 180g dark chocolate;
150g castor sugar; 3 large eggs;
1 tsp vanilla; 80g cake flour; 60ml cocoa
powder; 100g choc chips; 4 ripe plums
To make:
Preheat oven to 180°C and line a square
cake tin with baking paper.
Melt together chocolate and butter, then
set aside to cool to room temperature.
Whisk together sugar, eggs and vanilla
until pale and thickened, stir in the
melted chocolate and butter until
well combined.
Fold in the flour and cocoa powder,
then stir in the choc chips.
Pour the batter into the tin.
Halve the plums, remove the pips and
slice thinly before arranging on the
brownie batter.
Bake for 35-40 minutes (do not overbake)
you still want the brownies to be
gooey in the centre.
Remove from the oven then let it cool
down in the tin.
Slice into 16 squares once the brownies
have completely cooled.
Crispy chicken fingers and plum
chutney
Serves: 4
You’ll need:
1½ cups mayonnaise; ¼ cup grated parmesan;
1 tbsp chicken spice; 1 tsp smoked paprika; salt
and pepper; 4 chicken breasts (sliced); 2 cups
panko breadcrumbs; 2 tbps oregano;
1 tsp cayenne; 6 plums (pitted and diced);
1 onion, finely chopped; ½ tsp chilli flakes; 1 cup
brown sugar; ½ cup cider vinegar; ½ tsp allspice
To make:
Mix together mayo, parmesan, chicken spice,
paprika, salt and pepper.
Add the sliced chicken breasts, then stir to coat
chicken in mayo spice mixture.
Combine panko, oregano, seasoning and
cayenne.
Dip the chicken strips into the crumbs, pressing
to coat well.
Deep-fry in canola oil until golden and crispy or
bake in a preheated oven at 200°C until golden.
For the plum chutney, combine the plums, onion,
chilli flakes, sugar, vinegar and allspice, in a pot
and then place over medium heat and simmer
gently, stirring occasionally, for 30 minutes.
Cool to room temperature then store in an
airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
HEALTHY LIVING
Today’s technological age is an amazing time for children to be growing
up in. Children absorb things that the older generations don’t easily
grasp and their constant need for fast lifestyle has become the norm,
we have fast technology, fast entertainment, fast food and fast growth.
It is exactly because of this that we find our children with high stress,
not coping and showing signs of higher emotional and physical coping
needs. Biochemic Tissue salts- also known as cell salts which are the
natural base minerals found in the earth’s rock, soil and plants to give
the human body perfect health physically and emotionally - basically
what you lack from fresh veg and fruit that are genetically modified and
sprayed with pesticides in the soil you will get back by taking Tissue
salts. Discovered in the 1830s by Dr Schuessler, a German physician,
these base mineral Tissue salts are easily bought over the counter at
chemists to help you with every condition possible, whether you suffer
cramping or colic, bed-wetting, poor immune system, infections, fear
and stress or sleeplessness. Everything and more is included in the A-Z
of all ailments and the tissue salt required for the ailments. Get a copy
of Margaret Roberts Tissue salts for Children and Tissue salts for Healthy
Living at R200 from your nearest bookshop or call the Margaret Roberts
Herbal Centre. No home should be without these little miracle tablets.
OPTI BABY & KIDS
At Opti Baby and Kids Early Child Care and
Education learning is done through fun and
play-based activities, all which are crucial in the
continual growth of happy and healthy children.
Babies and children between the ages of six
weeks and five-years-old can enroll.
As day care is such a big step for both the parents
and kids, the team at Opti Baby and Kids do
everything from the parent’s perspective, creating
a caring, nurturing home from home environment.
For the babies there is a dedicated baby curriculum
(ages 3 months to 12 months). Over a five-day
period, the curriculum covers fine motor activities,
large motor and baby exercise activities, baby
massage, looking at books, cognitive activities and
sensory activities appropriate to the age, interest
and development of your child.
In the toddler class there is an emphasis on talking
to each child, looking at books, learning rhymes
and songs and reading stories to improve their
language. The 2 to 5-year-old groups follow a
weekly theme and play-based programme which
covers all early learning developmental areas.
KUMON
The Kumon method of learning is your passport to success. Success in Mathematics, and the
ability to read, summarise and interpret text, are vital requirements for any young person
wishing to study at university. Proficiency in language, self-confidence and self-development
skills are vital for success for anyone in their tertiary studies and in adult life.
The Kumon Education franchises offer MATHS and ENGLISH After-School Learning Programmes
that will prepare learners more than adequately for such success.
Our study programmes establish strong foundations in maths and English, and enable students
to progress to an advanced level, above their school grade level, at their own pace. In small
manageable steps, students develop their abilities and acquire study skills such as speed,
accuracy, time management, concentration and problem-solving. Kumon’s method also fosters
independence, so that throughout school and further education, they have the ability to
discover and learn on their own.
The Kumon learning programmes can help students to:
• Excel in Mathematics and English
• Develop invaluable study skills and concentration
• Develop a positive attitude towards study
• Become confident and independent
How the Kumon Process Works (a brief summary)
• The Kumon Maths and English programmes consists of a series of worksheets that a student
completes on a daily basis, either in the Kumon class or as homework.
• The allocation of which worksheet to do each day is decided by the Kumon Instructor, who
also gives each child careful guidance and instruction.
• The Kumon programme is accessed by enrolling at one of the many Kumon Centres in the
network around the world.
The Kumon Programmes are ideal for the preschool and primary school child, but ALL ages and
abilities are welcome. To find out how Kumon can help your child excel, visit the Kumon website to
Reasons to visit
Emdoneni Lodge 5Everyone loves a little bush getaway now and then. Couple that with an up-close-andpersonal
wild cat experience, a long walk along a pristine beach to visit a bat cave and a
sunset cruise with hippos and crocs . . . and you’ve got a holiday worth remembering.
1
Ideal location
With the Big Five Hluhluwe/
iMfolozi Game Reserve and
South Africa’s first UNESCO
World Heritage Site, the iSimangaliso
Wetland Park, just a stone’s throw
away, Emdoneni Lodge couldn’t
be more perfectly positioned for
a wilderness and adventure-filled
holiday. After just a short two-and-a
-half-hour drive from the King Shaka
International Airport, visitors can
completely immerse themselves
in a haven of natural beauty unlike
anywhere else in the world.
Smiles, song and
creature comforts
The rooms are quaint
and cozy, the food wholesome
and comforting and the staff full
of smiles at Emdoneni Lodge. The
privately owned, three-star lodge’s
accommodation options include
standard or deluxe chalets, Africanstyle
rondavels or the private Windfall
Cottage. Dinners are either in the
restaurant or alongside a bonfire in
the beautiful outdoor boma area
where you can sip a good glass of
red wine as you tuck into a yummy
dinner and enjoy being serenaded
by the multi-talented kitchen and
bar staff. Breakfasts are a treat with
all the trimmings, including yummy
homemade croissants and pastries.
Close up with the cats
There are few times in one’s life
when you can stand right next to
two cheetahs as they laze and roll
about, gently gnawing on each other’s ears.
One of the main drawcards for visitors to the
lodge is, of course, the on-site Emdoneni
Cat project (now called Zululand Cat
Conservation), which has been in operation
for more than 25 years. Guests visiting
the project are given a guided tour of the
facility and invited to get up-close-andpersonal
with the Cheetahs, African Wild
Cats, Caracals and Servals on the property.
There is no petting allowed and, since its
inception, more than 40 cats have been
successfully released back into the wild.
Wilderness adventures
The small coastal town of St Lucia,
less than an hour’s drive from
Emdoneni, is a treasure trove of
natural beauty and protected wilderness.
It is not uncommon to see hippos strolling
down the street or spot rare and endangered
birdlife in the surrounding coastal forest.
The town borders the iSimangaliso Wetland
Park, home to four of the Big Five and 220km
of protected coastline. A walk along Mission
Rocks beach is a must. Clamber over the
rugged rocks as you head north along the
pristine beach towards the sea caves that
are home to thousands of fruit-eating bats.
Enjoy lunch at a Cape Vidal picnic spot under
the trees before enjoying a swim or snorkel
in the warm Indian Ocean. And then, what
better way to end the day than with a sunset
cruise along Lake St Lucia, sipping on a G&T
as you watch a family of hippos frolicking
half-submerged in the water before they
slowly emerge to graze at dusk? Sheer
African paradise.
Delicious homegrown
spoils
Nothing beats delicious
sweet homegrown treats. And
Emdoneni (and Hluhluwe) are home
to two amazing natural spoils – honey
and pineapples. Bee-autiful Honey
(all-natural, hand-extracted honey
made by the busy bees living in the
surrounding bush at Emdoneni) and
Mama Annanas pineapple products
(including a to-die-for spicy pineapple
relish, dried pineapples and pineapple
juice) are must-tries!
