The programwas established toreward teachers who haveengaged their students inan agriculture activity.Teachers can use materialsfrom Ag in the Classroom,California Milk AdvisoryBoard, their schoolgarden, etc. All we ask isthat they document thelesson and turn it in forpotential credit.The program is set topresent one teacher a$500 award that they canuse for school supplies, afield trip, etc. Our committeewas so impressedwith the applications thatthey awarded three $500awards to teachers of R.M. Maino Elementary (LosBanos), Shaffer Elementary(Atwater) and WintonElementary (Winton). SergioDe Alba of R. M. Mainoprovided students with amulti-faceted lesson planof a family farm businesswhere students learnedto manage their money,the necessities of variouscrops such as citrus andtable grapes and developmentof a business plan.Cristen Cornaggia ofShaffer Elementary focusedon math and how itrelates to a dairy operation.She was able to tiein calculation scenariosinvolving nutrition andvaccination needs. KateMurphy of Winton ElementarySchool had studentsresearch robotics inagriculture. Students wereasked to select a roboticcomponent in farming, researchthe advances andthen market it to their fellowstudents.We want to thank thestudents and teachers forapplying as we appreciatetheir time and dedicationto agriculture.
