this than the people who live and work here? 

Starting March 16, Nelson at its Best organization 

is asking citizens of Nelson and area 

to express their views on how to improve the 

quality of life in our community. The survey 

questions will ask about local strengths, priority 

social issues, support services and recommended 

actions. 

The survey is short with only eight questions 

and takes about four minutes to fill out.

Challenge brain during 

Brain Awareness Week 

Have the winter doldrums slowed down 

your desire to eat well and stay physically 

and mentally active? 

With spring comes Brain Awareness 

Week, March 16 – 22, the perfect time for 

residents of Nelson and other communities 

in the region to get back on track. 

It’s important to make the move because 

healthy lifestyle choices lead to a healthy 

brain and can lower your risk of dementia. 

“The prevalence of dementia is on the rise 

and while researchers are working toward 

finding a cure and effective treatments, we 

can take steps to protect our brain health,” 

says Maria Howard, CEO of the Alzheimer 

Society of B.C. “There is strong and growing 

evidence that shows that key lifestyle 

changes such as regular physical activity, 

a heart-healthy diet, socialization and 

lifelong learning not only help 

lower the risk of dementia but 

also maintain or improve brain 

function as we age.” 

Dementia develops when 

the risk factors for the disease 

combine and reach a level that 

overwhelms the brain’s ability 

to maintain and repair itself. 

While there is no guarantee, 

reducing as many of the risk 

factors as you can will keep 

your brain as healthy and strong as possible 

as you age. In fact, according to recent 

research, combining four or five healthy 

lifestyle factors can reduce the risk of 

dementia by 60% compared to adopting 

none or only one factor. 

Here are some suggestions on how to get 

started: 

Challenge yourself: Learn a new hobby 

or language. Any kind of mental stimulation 

will fire up your neurons! 

Be socially active: Volunteer in your 

community or join a book club. Being 

social helps you stay connected mentally. 

Eat well: Create healthy meals that 

include a variety of foods to get the nutrients 

you need for a balanced diet. Choosing 

healthy foods can improve your general 

health, help maintain brain function and 

slow memory decline over the long term. 

Be physically active: Start with a 10 

minute walk around the block a few times a 

week. Regular exercise pumps blood to the 

brain, which nourishes the cells with the 

nutrients and oxygen they need and may 

even encourage new cells. 

Reduce your stress: Try five minutes of 

daily meditation to help lower your stress 

level. Constant stress can cause vascular 

changes and chemical imbalances that are 

damaging to the brain and other cells in 

your body. 

Protect your head: Wear an approved 

helmet when playing sports. Preventing 

falls is also critical, as this is one of 

the major causes of head injuries in older 

adults. 

Take care of yourself: Get enough sleep, 

don’t smoke and drink alcohol in moderation 

to help lower your risk factors.

Support for Vaxxed 2 Ad 

An editorial [letter] in your March 2 edition chastises 

Pennywise for running an ad for the documentary, 

Vaxxed 2, The People’s Truth, placed by a local 

parents’ group concerned about safety and effectiveness 

of vaccines. 

Apparently, this issue is a sacred cow and parents 

should not dare to ask questions about safety and 

validity of research. I watched the documentary, along 

with a large group of Kootenay residents in Castlegar 

and having followed this issue closely for 40 years as a 

health care provider, a parent and grandparent, I think 

everyone needs to see it before forming opinions. 

The families are real, the injuries and deaths and 

disabilities are real, the concerns for better and unbiased 

research for safety and effectiveness expressed 

by parents, doctors, nurses, pediatricians, immunologists 

and researchers are real. The numbers are much 

higher than the “one in a million” propaganda. The 

US Supreme court has called vaccines “unavoidably 

unsafe”. It is indisputable that vaccines have a downside 

that has been denied and to add insult, parents 

who know their child’s health declined after their 

shots are often dismissed and if they question the 

wisdom of more shots are labelled “anti vaxxers”. It’s 

time for mature and humble discussion and establishment 

of facts not controlled by the industry.

Marc Atkinson Trio and

The Marc Atkinson Trio 

plus Cameron Wilson 

will be performing at the 

St. Saviour’s Pro Cathedral 

in Nelson (Anglican 

church), corner of Ward 

and Silica Streets. 

The Marc Atkinson Trio is a group of string musicians including 

lead and rhythm guitars and stand-up bass. Marc is a seasoned and 

very talented Juno nominated guitarist who has performed in Nelson 

on his own years ago at the Capitol theatre. The upcoming concert 

will feature his genre bending fretting and flat picking virtuosity. 

Rick Gibbs of Island Jazz says of Atkinson, “It’s not just that Atkinson 

is so technically proficient that he can spin out seemingly impossibleto-play 

breath taking lines at will, it’s the emotional nuance and sense 

of humour in his work that are so engaging”. 

The current trio is comprised of Brett Martens on rhythm guitar 

and Scott White on stand-up bass and they are first rate musicians 

in their own respective rights. The Trio will be joined by Cameron 

Wilson on violin. Cameron is a composer as well as superb violinist. 

He is described as having “genre-crossing virtuosity and near limitless 

musical creativity”. Put these four talented string players together 

and the sounds will send you to musical heaven.
