Meet our Director... 

The days are longer, the sun is brighter, and our 

parks and Community Center are alive with the 

sounds of children and adults alike gathering for 

fun and games – summer is here! Our summer 

programming is the perfect example of how Palm Coast 

Parks & Recreation strives to bring quality events and 

activities for all ages to enjoy. This is made possible by our 

amazing staff, led by Parks & Recreation Director Lauren Johnston. 

If you have attended any Parks & Recreation 

event, there is a good chance that you have seen 

Lauren in the trenches, getting things done. 

Always one to lead from within, she has worked 

her way up the ranks of the department, 

starting as a summer camp counselor in 2007. 

“I was very humbled when Mr. Morton announced 

the promotion in front of our top leadership and my closest friends,” said 

Lauren. “I feel honored to serve our City and residents alongside my 

colleagues who have watched me grow through the years from counselor 

to now Director. We have a strong team in place and I am looking forward 

to continuing to move the department in a positive direction.” 

Lauren’s passion for the community is rooted in 

her formative years. A graduate of Matanzas 

High School, she has been a resident of Flagler 

County since 2005. “I found not only my career 

but my life in Palm Coast. I fell in love and had 

my son here. Like me, my son is now a Parks & Rec 

kid! He loves the toddler programs like Monday 

Funday and Munchkin Football. His favorite special 

event is Egg’stravaganza.” 

Never one to rest on her laurels, Lauren is pursuing her Bachelor of 

Science degree in Public Administration from Flagler College and looking 

forward to graduating in the fall of 2020. Her dedication and energy are 

an inspiration to our team. With our purpose refreshed and direction clear, 

your Parks & Recreation staff look forward to showing our City that the 

best is yet to come.

Adult Basketball League 

Interested in playing ball? Come out and show your skills in the Adult Basketball 

League. Register as a team for this 5-a-side style play. Compete for the title of 

league champions and a $100 voucher for next year’s league. All players are 

required to bring their I.D. to all games for proof of identification. The fee is per 

team.

Rymfire Elementary

The fastest growing sport in North America, pickleball is a sport for all ages played 

with small paddles and wiffle balls. Equipment is available for rent and will be

Are you new to the game of pickleball? Try out our Beginner’s Pickleball! A

Nine and Dine 

Enjoy a 9-hole game of golf followed by dinner at The Green Lion Cafe! Book your 

tee time with Palm Harbor Golf Club, play your round, and then enjoy a nice meal.

the Pro Shop for a bucket of 50 balls. This is a great opportunity to hang out with

These events, held twice per week, offer players of all ages and abilities a friendly 

and welcoming environment to play, practice, and compete. It is a great way to 

meet new people!

Morning Blast Tennis 

Start your day off right! Morning Blast will get your heart rate up with high pace, 

high energy drills, and point play. Our certified tennis-teaching professionals 

will lead you through 60 minutes of drills and games that will leave you feeling 

refreshed, confident, and ready to play more tennis. All skill levels are welcome.

Doubles Skills Tennis 

Join us for 90 minutes of situational drills and games for doubles led by our 

passionate team of certified tennis-teaching professionals. Players are grouped by

coaching. Each week we will progress to different subjects and new areas of focus.

Aqua Zumba® 

Aqua Zumba® blends the Zumba® philosophy with water resistance for one 

pool party you shouldn’t miss! There is less impact on your joints during an Aqua

This exercise program will provide a fun and safe workout designed to improve 

overall fitness, core strength, joint stabilization, and burn calories! Did we mention

Water Aerobics 

Combine aerobics with strength training in our Water Aerobics class! Moving

Zumba Gold® Toning 

Zumba® Gold Toning blends the Zumba® party you love, at a slower pace, with a 

redefining total body workout using Zumba® Toning Sticks to shake up those 

muscles! Tailored for active older adults and beginners who want to focus on 

muscle conditioning and light weight activity.

Zumba Gold® 

This class is perfect for active older adults and beginners who are looking for a 

modified Zumba® class that recreates the original moves you love at a lowerintensity. 

This class focuses on all elements of fitness: cardiovascular, muscular 

conditioning, flexibility, and balance! The design of the class introduces easyto-follow 

Zumba® choreography that focuses on balance, range of motion, and 

coordination.

Tai Chi for All 

This modified version of Tai Chi Chuan can relieve pain and improve your health 

and ability to do every day tasks. Good for all levels of fitness. Led by certified

Come learn the steps you need to rock to country. Instructor Kit Schiller will 

teach you what a vine is, how to do a shuffle, a cha-cha, and many more! Never 

danced before? This is the class for you. Got two left feet? We’ll teach them both! 

No flip flops, please. Shoes should slide a little on the floor and have backs to 

them. Dance socks on sneakers are acceptable. This beginner’s class is set-up as a 

4-week successional program. Each session will increase slightly in difficulty.

Have you taken our Beginners class? Now that you’ve learned the steps, let’s learn 

some dances! We’ll take those steps and put them to music with your favorite

Don’t just sit and watch Dancing with the Stars, be part of the action with

Tango, feel the heat of the Cha Cha, dance the romantic Rumba, and wow your

Pinochle is a card game, typically for two to four players, that is played with a 48 

card deck. Derived from the card game Bezique, players score points by tricktaking

demo on healthy snacks, learn about the importance of skin care as we age, check 

your height, weight, and blood pressure, and so much more.

Staff Spotlight 

Donna - Golf Pro 

Every one of my students is unique in their own 

way. My clientele runs from 4 years old to 100 

years young. I have clients that are in their 

70s learning golf for the first time; I have 

students with physical limitations; I teach low 

handicap golfers, elite juniors that are getting 

ready for the LPGA Tour, and social golfers who 

just want to hit the ball for more enjoyable golf. 

But every one of my students shares one thing 

in common....they all have a huge desire to learn.

We’re going to fire up the grill and welcome in those lazy, hazy, crazy days of

Adult Basketball is my personal favorite activity 

mainly because I am a basketball junkie myself! 

This program, and those like it, are beneficial to 

the community because they offer adults the 

opportunity to be active in a fun way. To some it 

may offer an activity outside of their daily norm 

to which they can look forward to during the 

week. These are some of the reasons I am proud 

to be part of the many programs we provide.

Staff Spotlight

Whether you are an active adult, elite athlete, or just looking for motivation to 

train, you can find your sport at the Senior Games. Competition is held in 5-year 

increment age groups, awarding medals to the top three in each division. This is 

a series qualifier (for sanctioned events only) for the Florida State Senior Games, 

which occur December 4-13 in Broward County, FL. The following sports will be

Experience the magic of swimming like a mermaid! Participants will learn proper

be verified at the Palm Coast Aquatics Center before the session begins. This may 

be done during the pool’s normal business hours by any lifeguard on duty. Your 

child must be able to pass the following prerequisites: swim 50 yards without 

assistance, float on front and back without assistance, roll from back to front, and 

be comfortable in deep water.

The purpose of Parent and Child Aquatics Level 1 is to teach safe behaviors around 

the water and develop swimming readiness by leading parents and their children 

in water exploration activities with the objective of having fun and becoming 

comfortable in and around the water. Parents must accompany child in water for 

each class. 

Preschool Aquatics Level 1 

For ages 4-5 years - $50 

Participants will be introduced to basic skills needed to achieve a minimum level of 

water competency. Skills introduced include but are not limited to the following: 

• How to safely enter and exit the pool • Floating on front and back 

• Treading of water • Swimming on front and back 



For participants who can successfully demonstrate the skills of Preschool 

Aquatics Level 1. Participants will build upon those skills and knowledge of water

guided practice. Participants of Level 3 must have successfully completed the skills 

required for Level 2 or be able to demonstrate the skills required of Level 2. Level 

3 is a faster-paced, instructional level and for those who are confident in the water. 

Emphasis is on refining stroke technique. Level 3 training includes: 

• Rotary breathing • Survival floating 

• Streamlined and dolphin kicking • Freestyle stroke for 15 yards 

• Breast stroke kick for 15 yards • Elementary backstroke 15 yards

Pool Safety Tips 

from your Aquatics Supervisor Ally 

1. Pay Attention - Parents should avoid distractions like cellphones when 

supervising children around water. 

2. Sun Protection - Sun protection is a must. Use sunscreen with an SPF of 

at least 15 and reapply often. 

3. Touch Supervision - The American Association of Pediatrics 

recommends staying within arm’s length of your child. Get in the water 

with your toddler. If you need to get out, take your child with you, even if 

lifeguards are present. 

Heat Safety Tips 

from your Palm Coast Firefighters 

1. Stay hydrated – drink plenty of cool water and/or sports drinks to 

replenish fluids and electrolytes lost through sweating and help regulate 

your core temperature. 

2. Wear the right clothing – wear loose-fitting clothing in light colors 

and breathable fabrics and always make sure to protect your eyes with 

sunglasses or a hat. 

3. Everyone out of the car – temperatures inside a parked car can rapidly 

rise, creating dangerous conditions for children, pets, and adults. No matter 

how briefly you may be parked, no one should ever be left in a car.
