On December 3rd 1982, representatives of 22 companies, including airlines with direct
routes from Germany to South America, tour operators, hotel chains and Embratur
Brazil, back than the only South American Tourist Board represented in Germany, met
up for the constituent assembly of the association Arbeitsgemeinschaft Südamerika.
One of the outstanding tasks of the new association was the drafting of a 40 page study
outlining required measures, ranging from market research activities, the establishment
of an information office, press and PR work to training courses for travel agency staff
and participation in trade fairs.
Dispappointment and a setback: when the study was presented at the COTAL conference
in Buenos Aires, the South American Partners failed to demonstrate the expected
interest and will to cooperate.
Founding of the association in Frankfurt am Main. The first Chairman was the then head
of VARIG in Germany, Hans-Jürgen Thien.
„We are aware of the many problems in these countries and that is precisely why we see
it as our particular task to improve their public image in Germany and stir up interest for
countries whose economy is primarily dependent on tourism.“ That was how Hans-Jürgen
Thien, the first Chairman, summed up the objectives of the association once its
scope had finally been broadened in 1990 to include Latin America countries.
ARGE Lateinamerika e.V. opens its first official business/press office.
ARGE presents itself and its members for the first time to an interested public at a tourism
fair (CMT, Stuttgart).
A new logo is born.
The statutes of ARGE are amended by the General Meeting: from now on, it is also possible
for members to join who are not based in Germany.
The first ARGE website is created and the first issue of the ARGE magazine is published
–back then with the title „Immer wieder Neue Welt...“
ArgeLA celebrates it’s 30th anniversary and can now boast 80 members.
ArgeLA launched the first E-learning course in German language covering the whole of
Latin America for training travel agency employees.
At the CMT in Stuttgart, ArgeLA presents the Pueblo Latino – a Latin American discovery
area covering more than 300 qm.
ArgeLA is present at the most important trade fairs in Germany, Austria and Switzerland
(Ferienmesse Wien, CMT Stuttgart, Fespo Zürich, Reisen Hamburg and f.re.e).
Relaunch of the e-learning platform with various modules on the
countries of Latin America.
For the first time, the magazine “América Latina” is produced in-house.
The roadshows of ARGE Lateinamerika are becoming more and more popular. More
than 20 members and about 300 travel agents take part in the yearly ARGE-Roadshow.
ARGE Lateinamerika is conducting the first webinars for its members. Also this year the
new website goes online.
an important network is established,
throughout the market, of people
who are able to disseminate information
about Latin Amerca in general
and the individual members in
particular.
Each year, the training programme
is adapted to the requirements of
the market and the members:
The participating travel agents
Lateinamerika and its members.
The ArgeLA supports the member
invitation to travel agents, to
qualified speakers, ArgeLA takes on
all tasks that lead to a successful
event and increase the level of awareness
of the countries of Latin America.
AWARD-WINNING
TRAINING QUALITY
ARGE Lateinamerika has twice won
awards for its training activities from
the Willy Scharnow Tourism Foundation.
In 1991 and again in 2007, the
Foundation confirmed the outstanding
work carried out by ARGE in the
ongoing training of tourism professionals
in Germany.
As a supplement to the German curricula,
ARGE Lateinamerika offers
full-day seminars on Latin America
to vocational and technical schools.
„We were together in Latin America“
is the goal for an intensive learning
day for the students. With modern
presentation technology, practical
exercises and intensive group work,
around 200 students are sensitised
to the destination of Latin America
every year.
The seminar stands out from the daily
school routine and lingers in the memory
of pupils and students to the
benefit of tourism to Latin America.
As well as general information about
the destination, the focus in the vocational
and technical colleges is
also on the products of the ArgeLA
members.
TRADE SHOWS
„ARGE
„
to interested
visitors.
BRINGING LATIN AMERICA TO LIFE IN CENTRAL EUROPE
The Pueblo Latino – a bustling meeting
place for the whole of Latin America
– found its way into exhibition
centres from 2013 to 2015 for the
duration of well attended consumer
fairs.
With the Pueblo Latino, ARGE Lateinamerika
e.V. had created an unrivalled
discovery area. In the centrally situated
Plaza, travel experts from ARGE
Lateinamerika impressed visitors with
breathtaking pictures and first-hand
information about the destinations of
Latin America. Over the way, ethnic
handicrafts and pre-Columbian jewellery
cast their spell on visitors. The
men among them are won over by
first-class Colombian cigars. Ethnic
handicrafts, pre-Columbian jewelry
and first-class cigars, as well as coffee
from Colombia, empanadas and
wines from Chile and Argentina conveyed
the attitude towards life and the
emotions of Latin America, accompanied
by typical dance performances.
As a crowd puller, the Pueblo Latino
offered ArgeLA members direct contact
with potential travelers in a lively
and authentic environment
again, the following applies for all ARGE members: participation can be
tailored to the wishes and requirements of the individual member companies:
Distribution of marketing materials at the shared ArgeLA counter without
the need to involve their own staff. ArgeLA provides competent advice to
interested visitors.
With their own small counter within the overall ArgeLA community.
Members use their own staff to provide visitors with advice and information
and have the opportunity to market themselves with a counter of their own.
Fully individual with a booth of their own, but still under the roof of ArgeLA.
The meeting place for professionals: ITB Berlin
In cooperation with the Messe Berlin exhibition centre, ARGE Lateinamerika
organizes an annual Latin America Forum as part of the ITB Convention at the
ITB (Internationale Tourismus Börse travel trade show) in Berlin.
Topical issues related to tourism in Latin America are presented to a highcalibre
audience, consisting of members of the press and representatives of
business and politics, and discussed.
