Safety Week (CASW) is an annual 

public campaign focusing on the importance 

of safe agriculture. Safe & Strong Farms: 

Grow an AgSafe Canada is the second year 

of a three year campaign celebrating farm 

safety across Canada. The aim of the campaign 

is to empower farmers, farm families 

and farming communities to build (2019), 

grow (2020 and lead (2021) the agricultural 

industry in safety and sustainability. 

In 2020 organizers are focusing on supporting 

farmers, farm families and farming 

communities through resources, safety 

advice articles, an AgSafe Ribbon campaign 

and more. “We recognize that this past year 

was a difficult one for many farmers,” says 

Marcel Hacault, CASA’s Executive Director. 

“That’s why we’ve focused resources on supporting 

wellness, resilience and safety on the 

farm.”

Health Education and Vitals Clinics 

The Lardeau Valley Community Club has partnered with BC 

Emergency Health Services to provide a monthly health education 

and vitals clinic, plus weekly chair yoga classes, for Lardeau Valley 

residents. On February 12, Community Paramedic Leanne Blancher, 

talked about the risk factors for falls and strokes, prevention and how 

to recognize and respond to signs of a stroke. 

Leanne presented numerous statistics and risk factors. Isolation, an 

unhealthy diet, lack of exercise and taking more than four prescribed 

medications are factors that increase the risk of falling and increase 

the risk of having a stroke. 1 in 3 adults aged 65 and over will suffer a 

fall this year. 60% of head injuries and 90% of hip and wrist fractures 

are a result of falls. 

Most falls happen in the home and result from slipping, tripping 

and stumbling. Improperly secured floor mats, grabs bars held on by 

suction cups in the shower and not using night lights to light the way 

to the bathroom at night increase the risk of falling. Help decrease 

the risk by wearing properly fitted shoes with a wide foot bed and 

deep heel cups. While walking is very important for general health 

and keeping mobile, it does not decrease fall risk. Strength and balance 

training, such as Tai Chi or the 

SAIL Home Activity Program through 

www.findingbalancebc.ca can decrease 

risk by 50%. 

Is one side of the Face drooping? Can 

the person raise both Arms? Is Speech 

slurred or jumbled? Leanne emphasized 

Time is BRAIN and call 911 when talking 

about the FAST acronym used to 

teach the signs of a stroke. A sudden, 

severe and unusual headache, dizziness, 

loss of balance or sudden vision 

trouble can be signs of a transient ischemic 

attack, TIA, which happens when 

blood flow to the brain is temporarily 

blocked. She also stressed never attempt 

to drive the person experiencing stroke 

symptoms, especially if it is you, to 

the hospital. Reducing stress, quitting 

smoking, cutting back on excess alcohol 

and recreational drugs and maintaining 

a healthy body weight will reduce the 

risk for stroke. Be realistic and do not 

expect to change all unhealthy habits 

at the same time. Included in her summary 

for preventing stroke she said, 

“Eat fresh, healthy food, smell the roses 

and feel the air in your lungs.” Make a 

plan and speak up to reduce the risk for 

falling and the risk for stroke. 

Naloxone training is scheduled for 

the next health education and vitals 

clinic on March 11. “Most drug overdoses 

happen at home and are with 

prescribed medication,”Leanne said. 

Upcoming clinics include Stop the 

Bleed in April, and a repeat of the CPR 

and AED training clinic that was held 

in January. Community Paramedic 

Emily Jowle will be leading chair yoga 

classes at 2 pm on Thursdays starting 

March 12. Lardeau Valley residents can

2. Revision to allow for the consideration of Temporary Use Permits for any proposed temporary land use as reflected in recent changes 

to the Local Government Act 

3. Revision to the allowable setback to a property line from 1.5 metres to 2.5 metres to align with B.C. Building Code requirements.
