For 25 years, Columbia Basin Trust has been<br />

Safety Week (CASW) is an annual<br />

public campaign focusing on the importance<br />

of safe agriculture. Safe & Strong Farms:<br />

Grow an AgSafe Canada is the second year<br />

of a three year campaign celebrating farm<br />

safety across Canada. The aim of the campaign<br />

is to empower farmers, farm families<br />

and farming communities to build (2019),<br />

grow (2020 and lead (2021) the agricultural<br />

industry in safety and sustainability.<br />

In 2020 organizers are focusing on supporting<br />

farmers, farm families and farming<br />

communities through resources, safety<br />

advice articles, an AgSafe Ribbon campaign<br />

and more. “We recognize that this past year<br />

was a difficult one for many farmers,” says<br />

Health Education and Vitals Clinics<br />

The Lardeau Valley Community Club has partnered with BC<br />

Emergency Health Services to provide a monthly health education<br />

and vitals clinic, plus weekly chair yoga classes, for Lardeau Valley<br />

residents. On February 12, Community Paramedic Leanne Blancher,<br />

talked about the risk factors for falls and strokes, prevention and how<br />

to recognize and respond to signs of a stroke.<br />

Leanne presented numerous statistics and risk factors. Isolation, an<br />

unhealthy diet, lack of exercise and taking more than four prescribed<br />

medications are factors that increase the risk of falling and increase<br />

the risk of having a stroke. 1 in 3 adults aged 65 and over will suffer a<br />

fall this year. 60% of head injuries and 90% of hip and wrist fractures<br />

are a result of falls.<br />

Most falls happen in the home and result from slipping, tripping<br />

and stumbling. Improperly secured floor mats, grabs bars held on by<br />

suction cups in the shower and not using night lights to light the way<br />

to the bathroom at night increase the risk of falling. Help decrease<br />

the risk by wearing properly fitted shoes with a wide foot bed and<br />

deep heel cups. While walking is very important for general health<br />

and keeping mobile, it does not decrease fall risk. Strength and balance<br />

training, such as Tai Chi or the<br />

SAIL Home Activity Program through<br />

www.findingbalancebc.ca can decrease<br />

risk by 50%.<br />

Is one side of the Face drooping? Can<br />

the person raise both Arms? Is Speech<br />

slurred or jumbled? Leanne emphasized<br />

Time is BRAIN and call 911 when talking<br />

about the FAST acronym used to<br />

teach the signs of a stroke. A sudden,<br />

severe and unusual headache, dizziness,<br />

loss of balance or sudden vision<br />

trouble can be signs of a transient ischemic<br />

attack, TIA, which happens when<br />

blood flow to the brain is temporarily<br />

blocked. She also stressed never attempt<br />

to drive the person experiencing stroke<br />

symptoms, especially if it is you, to<br />

the hospital. Reducing stress, quitting<br />

smoking, cutting back on excess alcohol<br />

and recreational drugs and maintaining<br />

a healthy body weight will reduce the<br />

risk for stroke. Be realistic and do not<br />

expect to change all unhealthy habits<br />

at the same time. Included in her summary<br />

for preventing stroke she said,<br />

“Eat fresh, healthy food, smell the roses<br />

and feel the air in your lungs.” Make a<br />

plan and speak up to reduce the risk for<br />

falling and the risk for stroke.<br />

Naloxone training is scheduled for<br />

the next health education and vitals<br />

clinic on <strong>March</strong> 11. “Most drug overdoses<br />

happen at home and are with<br />

prescribed medication,”Leanne said.<br />

Upcoming clinics include Stop the<br />

Bleed in April, and a repeat of the CPR<br />

and AED training clinic that was held<br />

in January. Community Paramedic<br />

Emily Jowle will be leading chair yoga<br />

classes at 2 pm on Thursdays starting<br />
