A LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
I recently helped my grandmother celebrate her 103rd birthday. It was not
just a simple party—it was four days of celebrations that allowed many of
her friends and much of our family time to thank God for her. She loves a
party, but more than anything, she loves to thank God for all he has done
for her family. Standing together, holding hands to pray before a meal, she
gets choked up thanking God for the fact that each and every person, all
five generations, are Christ-followers who truly love Jesus. I stood in church
with her on one side and my mom on the other, singing the song “How Great
is Our God.” As we sang the words “Age to age He stands, and time is in
His hands, Beginning and the end,” I couldn’t help but be reminded of how
faithful God has been, is, and will be—forever faithful.
Forever Faithful is our theme for this 75th jubilee year at Ontario Christian
School, based on the scripture from Lamentations 3:22-23, which says,
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions
never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Within
the context of these verses, God promises restoration and blessing,
and Jeremiah, knowing God would keep that promise, trusted in God’s
faithfulness day by day. God’s mercies are enough for each new day, then
and now, and always. To trust fully in God’s sovereignty is to know what it is
to be a child of God.
Humor me for a minute. Stop and think right now about God’s faithfulness
in your life. Really. Stop. Write it down. As you write, I pray that your praise
will overflow for all God is doing to reveal himself to you.

Here are just a few ways that God has been faithful to the OC community this year:
• A collaborative staff that loves students and who are innovative educators.
• A kickoff all-high school retreat. Students, teachers, and administrators came together in worship and
spiritual unity to frame the year.

active engagement in and out of the classroom

The list could go on and on, especially if I had the time and space to communicate some of the conversations I have had this
year. The wonderful thing about being in community at a Christian school means that we experience the body of Christ each day.
As we do life together, I have heard of prayers answered for healing and reconciliation. I have experienced families giving back
when once they were in a position to receive help. We all have tremendous opportunities to really lean into the lives of each other
to encourage, to serve, and to love.

8TH GRADE LEADERSHIP RETREAT
In September, the 8th-grade students went to Thousand Pines Christian Camp in Crestline on a day-long retreat where the main
focus was answering the question, “What does it take to be a good leader?” Mike Barsamian, a local youth pastor and Young Life
leader, spoke to the students from 1 Corinthians 12 and 13, challenging the students to be leaders in a variety of ways. In looking
at 1 Corinthians 12, he focused on the fact that each of us is created differently and that all need to work together to benefit the
whole. Using an example of a large LEGO sculpture, he pointed out that each piece is different, but the whole structure cannot
be completed without each one. That is the way our school (and family and community and other relationships) should be! In the
afternoon, he focused on chapter 13 and the reminder that the underlying motivation behind everything we do is LOVE—love for God
and love for all those around us. “Without love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.”
Students did not waste any time practicing these leadership skills as they encouraged and supported each other on rock walls,
ziplines, and low-ropes courses. They served and influenced each other while problem-solving in other team activities. They spent
time worshipping, journaling, and praying communally and individually, and reflected on God’s word.
During the weeks following the retreat, the students put these skills to use both in and out of the classroom. In the ASB elective
class, the 8th-grade leaders have a positive impact on the 7th-grade members as they work together to find ways to unify the middle
schoolers. In Friday afternoon CREW classes (which are either all-guy or all-girl groups), the 8th graders are stepping up and helping
to provide leadership and guidance to the 7th graders in a variety of ways, including leading devotions and discussions in class.
Athletic team members encourage, support, and work together for the benefit of their team, trying to live out these leadership
traits and glorify God in the process.
On Friday, November 1, the 8th graders had a very tangible way to live out their calling as servant-leaders as they participated in
their first service day of the year. One group went to serve at Feed the Children, packing boxes of supplies to be sent around the
country to help those in need. Some students went to 3-Way Thrift, assisting on the floor and in the back rooms in ways that were
helpful to their mission of serving the community. Others helped OCPA set up for the Harvest Carnival that was taking place later
that day. Finally, another group of students stayed on campus and served as helpers in preschool and elementary classrooms.
There are no doubt many other examples of how Ontario Christian Middle School students are becoming the Christian Leaders God
has intended them to be, and we look forward to seeing the fruits of leadership as the year continues.

CHAMPIONS
Back-to-Back Volleyball Champions
It felt like we were just coming off the high from the 2018 season when, before we knew it, tryouts were upon us again for
the 2019 season. The 2018 season was awesome, but as a team, we knew that the accomplishments of the past season
were not going to automatically mean we would have a successful upcoming year. We moved up two divisions in the CIF
Southern Section and one division in the state bracket, so we knew that if we wanted to come anywhere near the success
of 2018, we were going to have to work for it. And this year, we would have a huge target on our back.
In preparation for this season, we made slight changes to our line up and gameplay and made sure our schedule was
tougher than it had ever been; we had to believe we could do it. Not until the end of the summer in the Queens Court Tournament
did we realize that we had a chance again. We played some huge D1 programs, such as Mater Dei, Beckman, and Aliso
Niguel, and when we finished fifth in that tournament, we could see that our team was ready to compete for another title.
We stayed ranked number one all season, but this year we had the chatter of opposing schools in our heads. Not many
teams thought we deserved to be ranked that high in D3, but we put our heads down and kept working hard every day.
Paloma Valley was always in our thoughts, too. Everywhere we went we saw them. They wanted revenge for the year before,
and to top it off, they improved tremendously. When we inevitably met back up in the CIFSS Finals, it could not have been
more of a storybook ending when it came down to a 15-13 win in the 5th game of the match.
After that, we had to refocus on State playoffs. This year, we were not going to play four straight home games. In fact, we
traveled over 1000 miles in our state-run. After a near season-ender in the first match at Bakersfield, everything went up
from there—including the talent of the opposing teams. We beat three of the top San Diego teams to get ourselves back to a
State Final, Carlsbad being the most competitive game we played all year.
With a 3-0 win in the finals, we found ourselves as one of only a handful of California teams to win Back-to-Back State Titles.
All of our work paid off. On paper, our team should not have won some of those matches, but the talent, hard work, determination,
and love of volleyball of each and every team member allowed us to finish the season with another win.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS PROGRAM
YOU-KNIGHTED REVEALED
It all started with a few questions. What does
OCHS need? What does God want for us? How
can we make that happen? We set out in prayer
to faithfully answer His call and the surprising
result: plan a retreat!
A retreat. Really? We need a retreat!?! “God,
you really want us to take approximately 400
students and staff, off campus, for three days,
overnight? What will that accomplish for our
school?” Thoughts and questions of doubt
quickly began to fill our heads: We have never
done this before. What will the students say?
What will the families want? How is this what
we need? If you are anything like me, you
might read those questions and think—those are
reasonable fears, perhaps even justified. But
after some thought you also might read those
questions and think—you’re missing something: the question you started with, “What does God want?” Our focus was redirected.
Now it was time to plan. First up: a theme! With so many possible options, choosing just one could prove to be difficult. But we
ultimately had to ask: if we need a retreat... why? OCHS is a great place to be. We have a thriving volleyball team (back-to-back state
champions!). We have an amazing choir and band program. Our teachers are kind, educated, and relational. Our campus is beautiful
and so much more! What else is there?
But stop and take a closer look. Yes, those things are amazing—things we are proud of—but they’re individual, separate, great on their
own, but even more powerful, more impactful if accomplished together: Unified. We had our theme. We need to be “united”—united
in our accomplishments, in our failures, and in our Savior. And of course, no theme would be complete without a play on our mascot
itself, so we called the retreat “You-Knighted.”
In mid-October, OC International took an inaugural goodwill trip to China to visit the families of some of our international students.
OC has welcomed international students from countries such as China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Chile for over a decade, and this
year, OC has 28 international students, primarily at the high school campus. Families from all over China met us in three major
metropolitan cities to share a meal or tea together and to share why they sent their children over to the US to study. Most mentioned
a highly competitive and all-consuming process of getting into college in China and a desire for their children to get a more wellrounded
education in the US. Here at OC, staff and faculty alike work hard to help the students integrate more into the community
and to involve themselves in extracurricular activities. Among these students are those who hear the name of Christ for the first
time on campus, some of whom come to profess faith during their time at OC.
There are many unspoken challenges for an international student adjusting to a new culture, homestay family, and school
environment. Nancy Li (Class of ‘20) says, “Being here at OC is life-changing because you leave your old family and then now you are
at a new big family which is wonderful.” The homestay families are a key piece in the process of adjusting to a new life in America,
and many welcome these students into their families as their own. Some students have mentioned how much of an impact the
witness of a homestay guardian, teacher, or friend has had on their burgeoning Christian faith.
Now we moved on to the final question: How do we make this happen?
The next few months were filled with details that did just that:

After months and months of organizing, planning, calling, creating, scheduling, and meeting, it was officially time to go. Although
I will not overwhelm you with the specifics of those first moments, I will tell you that there was an excitement in the air that there
had never been before.
For three days Forest Home was our home. We ate together, worshipped together, learned together, laughed together, played
together, and grew together. It was amazing! Although it is difficult to recreate all of the amazing moments at camp, I can share
some of my favorites with you. They included:
In this global society, the prospect of a brighter future has drawn many from the East to the doorsteps of OC. We are looking forward
to hosting them and welcoming them into our OC family. Together we are Knights.

Night One—Kick-off with Worship: Trent and the worship team transformed a simple meeting area into a place of fun and excitement.
Picture a band, 400 people, purple and blue lights, and some of the most upbeat worship songs you have ever heard. Students were
able to jump, lift hands, wrap arms, and praise their Lord. For almost an hour, students and staff let their joy overflow to Him. Little
did we know at the time that two songs in particular would be “ours” for the year: “Reckless Love” and “King of My Heart.”

Day Two—Messages with Coach Bry: Bry reminded us over
and over again what unity truly looks like. Although we
are individuals who are strong and capable, when those
individuals group up, there is power in that as well. She
used the image of standing alone. Alone, we are easily
able to be pushed over. Alone, we may not be able to
move what we need to move. But together, we are firm.
Together, we are able to move quickly and efficiently.
The same can be said as a community of believers. We
are stronger together. Bry was able to capture the ears
and minds of our young people in an easy, relatable, and
motivating way. There are many students, even today,
who still keep in contact with her.
Day Two—Activity Time: Some of my favorite moments
included watching students and staff having fun
outside. There was so much to do and experience at
Forest Home. We got to see teachers go down the water
slides, students jump into “the blob”, friends attempt
the giant swing, and even a few brave individuals who ziplined
high above the camp. It was amazing to be walking
around and see nothing but smiles. Young people were
enjoying their time, and memories were being made to
last forever.
Night Two—Victory Circle: When you ask anyone who
attended camp what one of their favorite moments
was, more than likely it would involve this place:
Victory Circle. Never has there been a moment
where I saw all 400 of us humbled before
God as I saw in this place. There were prayers
lifted, tears shed, songs lifted and burdens
lifted; in this place came complete
acknowledgment and surrender to our
Savior. I will be forever grateful for this
memory.
“Unity. Such a small word but one filled with limitless impact. Not so sure? Picture these images in your mind for a
moment: a marriage, a friendship, a church, a team, and even a school. What do these things look like in the absence
of unity? Broken. Stagnant. Lonely. Unable to move forward. But imagine those things/places surrounded in unity.
What do we have now? Strength. Growth. Fellowship. Impact. And for OCHS, “unity” came to our campus this year. “
Although several other amazing moments
could be shared from these three days, the
most noteworthy is how we returned. We
returned joyful, optimistic, and encouraged
for the year ahead. We returned bonded,
unified, and motivated to continue the work
God had done. We returned hopeful, and
although God is still doing His work here at
OCHS, we know that He is in a way that we did
not before. He is working, and we are grateful.
Psalm 133:1 says, “How good and pleasant it is when
God’s people live together in unity.” OCHS was reminded
of that in August 2019. We are reminded of it now, and
we work together to never forget. We are You-Knighted.

For many years Ontario Christian has enjoyed partnering with 3 Way Thrift Store, a Biblically-based
nonprofit committed to supporting three organizations: Inland Christian Home, Ontario Christian
Schools, and Salem Christian Homes. Since 2008 the organization has more than doubled its size, and
their support for the three organizations has remained steady.
We are grateful for this lasting relationship.

the Southern California area as the go-to group of thrift
stores. The main purpose is to support, aid, & serve the
local community so it can continue to grow and thrive.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Samantha Hagelis
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’” (Jeremiah 29:11).
As an Ontario Christian High School alumni, I cannot tell you how excited I am to be back on the high school campus, serving the Ontario Christian community.
When I graduated in 2011, I had no idea what plans God had for me or where my future career would be. If someone had asked me in high school where I
saw myself in 10 years, I probably would have answered with something adventurous, like traveling as a marine biologist or thriving as an interior designer.
Oh, how God had different plans for me!
After leaving Ontario Christian High School, I pursued my Bachelor’s degree from Concordia University Irvine with a double major in Psychology and Sociology.
After some exploration in various internships, I realized my passion for serving children and teens. I finally decided on the career path of School Counselor
and continued on to pursue my Masters Degree in School Counseling from California Baptist University in Riverside, California. Little did I know that God was
already drawing me back to Ontario Christian at this time.
During my time at California Baptist University, I began to shadow and work with Karen Gallagher, the previous counselor on the high school campus, and she
began to teach me about the various ways that she works with students here at OC. I began to see counseling through a different lens—not just as a position to
teach students about classes, careers, and college requirements, but also as an opportunity to build relationships with students and have genuine connections
that would impact students for life. I knew OC was offering something special to their students, as well as their community, and I wanted to be a part of it.
Shortly after my internship on the high school campus, the opportunity for a counselor position at the high school presented itself, and I applied for and was
offered the position. Over the last three years of working as a counselor, I have made amazing memories and grown exponentially. God has stretched me
to my limits and challenged me in ways I never expected. I have made unforgettable memories with many of the students on campus and had the unique
opportunity to learn about these students as I engage with them one-on-one.
In all areas of my life, God has remained faithful. In addition to being blessed with my career, I have been happily married to my husband Kevin for almost
two years. Looking forward, we hope to continue to build our family, and joyfully serve others in our careers and in our community. I cannot wait to see what
God continues to do in my life, as well as in the lives of my students.
