Welcome…
Some of our advertisers won’t appreciate what
I’m about to say, but Anna Jarvis (1864–1948), the
founder of Mother’s Day, couldn’t stand the idea of
people spending so much money on gifts for the person who
brought them into this world. Having been established in the
United States in 1908, by 1943, Anna had become so distraught
over the fact she couldn’t seem to stop the commercialisation of
the annual celebration, she decided to start a petition to rescind the
whole thing, saying: “A printed card means nothing except that you
are too lazy to write to the woman who has done more for you
than anyone in the world. And candy! You take a box to Mother
– and then eat most of it yourself.” But instead of getting Mother’s
Day removed from the calendar, Anna was placed in a Pennsylvanian
sanitarium. And people connected with the floral and greeting card
industries paid the bills to keep her there until her death.
It’s an unexpected story to come across during a casual search for
the origins of Mother’s Day, but it’s not the only example of the
world of commerce taking control. Undeniably, commercialisation
can be something of a dirty word, but it happens all around us,
and in all honesty, I don’t think it’s always a bad thing. Indeed, this
publication would not exist were it not for the paid-for adverts,
which could be described as the (ahem) commercialisation of our
community. But that’s a discussion for another day.
Instead, I leave the last word to Anna and her explanation of
why white carnations were the symbol for her Mother’s Day. ”Its
whiteness is to symbolise the truth, purity and broad-charity of
mother love; its fragrance, her memory…
The carnation does not drop its petals, but hugs
them to its heart as it dies, and so, too,
mothers hug their children to their hearts,
their mother love never dying.”
South Woodford Society’s
Neighbourhood Area and
Forum approved by council
South Woodford
The South Woodford Society’s
proposed Neighbourhood Area
and Forum – a body to organise
the creation of a Neighbourhood
Plan, which puts the planning of
new developments in the hands
of the community – has been
approved by Redbridge Council.
During a consultation, comments
from the public suggested
changes, including removing the
Maybank area and the Woodford
Trading Estate from the region
covered by the plan and adding
in Empress Avenue and the
Laings Estate. “The Maybank
Community Association covers a
sizable area and intends to work
on its own Neighbourhood Plan
application later this year,” said a
spokesperson. Councillor Beverly
Brewer added: “This is excellent
news for South Woodford. Thanks
to the hard work of the South
Woodford Society, local people
now have a great opportunity to
influence the future of our local
area.” The next steps in producing
the Neighbourhood Plan will be
discussed at the South Woodford
Society’s AGM on 25 March. Email
the Salvation Army hall on Daisy
Road, South Woodford from 7pm
– will have an environmental
theme. “We will be discussing
the next steps to be taken
regarding the Neighbourhood
Plan and also ways we can help
the environment and tackle
the climate challenges that
are becoming more and more
prevalent. Please make sure you
Increased grant to
benefit rough sleepers
Redbridge Council’s efforts
to end rough sleeping in the
borough have been given a
boost, with an increase in its
government grant for this work.
The authority has been awarded
£625,000 for this year, a 25%
increase on last year’s grant. It
is part of a government £112m
fund to prevent people from
rough sleeping, and to get those
that already sleep rough off the
An expert from the British
Tinnitus Association (BTA)
attended the February meeting
of the Redbridge Tinnitus
Support Group – which meets
in Woodford Green – to answer
questions and discuss the latest
research into the condition.
“Tinnitus can be an isolating
condition, and we’re keen to
spread the word that there are
management techniques that
can help a person lead the best
life they can, and to reduce
the burden of living with this
problem,” said BTA volunteer
Colette Bunker. Around one
in eight people suffer from
persistent tinnitus, which is
defined as the experience of
sounds with no external source,
most commonly ringing or
buzzing. The Redbridge Tinnitus
Support Group meets on the
last Monday of every month.
Are you a #LitterHero? South Woodford Society urges
residents to join local spring clean
The Great British Spring Clean
2020 runs from 20 March to
13 April, and the South Woodford
Society will be taking part in the
initiative. “We ran our first litter
pick of the year on a Sunday in
February. Unfortunately, the
eight hardy souls who turned out
were rather hindered by Storm
Ciara! We collected eight bags
of rubbish and some recycling
before we were beaten by the
weather,” said a spokesperson.
Last year, more than 560,000
#LitterHeroes from across the
nation took part in the Great
British Spring Clean. “We will be
planning another litter pick very
soon, so make sure you are on
our mailing list and check our
social media for details. Together,
we can make a difference. All
our individual actions can help
transform our country, creating
cleaner streets, protecting
wildlife and, ultimately, stopping
the tide of plastic that is doing
so much damage to our oceans.
The Great British Spring Clean
is about demonstrating that
you love where you live.”
Woodford War
Memorial at St Mary’s
Church, South Woodford
Discover the history of South Woodford’s war
memorial and other local monuments
The history of local war
memorials will be the subject
of a presentation for the
Woodford and District branch
of the National Trust on 15 April.
“My interest in war memorials
focuses on two points… Firstly,
this country is most certainly a
better place than it might have
been had we lost the major
conflicts in the 20th century. Thus
we do, in my view, owe a debt
to those commemorated on the
memorials… Secondly, I believe
war memorials are very much
part of our social and cultural
heritage,” said Richard Speller,
whose talk will take place at All
Saints’ Church hall in Woodford
Green from 2.30pm (visitors: £3).
“Having been born in Wanstead
and attending Forest School, I
recollect local Remembrance
Day services, at the Wanstead
Memorial with its angel, St Mary’s
in South Woodford and at
my school. I then happened
upon the War Memorials Trust,
which does such good work in
monitoring and providing grants
for memorials in need of repair.”
Time to ‘get involved’ with Woodford Town FC as
club prepare to move back to local area
Woodford Town FC is keen to
hear from more local people who
would like to be involved with
the club as they prepare to move
from their current ground share
with Harlow FC to Ashton Playing
Fields in Woodford Bridge. At the
forefront of creating a positive
image behind the proposed
move is their self-styled fan base
known as The Cultras. “It’s not
just singing and drumming that
makes The Cultras stand out.
They have a community ethos
and proudly promote their local
heritage… They have already
designed and produced two kits
inspired by local heroine Sylvia
Pankhurst,” said a spokesperson.
Following Redbridge Council’s
approval of a £1.6m revamp
of the club’s proposed new
home, chairman Tony Scott has
described a recent meeting
with the authority as ‘positive’.
“There is still plenty to do before
the first ball is kicked, but the
future is looking bright for our
team, now out of the borough
for 28 years. Please get in touch
if you would like to be involved.”
12 South Woodford Village Gazette
LOCAL
From Hermon Hill to the High Road, Terry Townsend
outlines where he likes to spend his money and why,
in the first of a series of articles offering a resident’s
view of shopping in South Woodford. Photography
by Geoff Wilkinson
There’s a lot that gives
South Woodford
its unique identity.
Its people are diverse,
community-minded and proud.
There are good schools and
always lots of kids around.
Inside The Galleria,
off George Lane
Indeed, South Woodford is one
of five recognised district town
centres in Redbridge, alongside
Wanstead High Street. One of our
special features is the range of
shopping and services available.
All within walking distance.
You can get your car repaired,
drop off your dry cleaning, visit
the post office and builders’
merchant and, of course, you can
get your hair cut every 100 yards!
With Westfield, Europe’s biggest
shopping mall, a stone’s
throw away, you might think a
traditional high street the size of
South Woodford has had its day.
Not a bit of it.
From Hermon Hill to the High
Road and George Lane, there
is a huge range of shops and
services, with many of them
being run as independent
businesses. And in the heart
of George Lane, we have The
Galleria, which has a few hidden
gems. The opening hours of
some of the businesses seem
a little odd (this visitor found
almost nothing open at 4pm on
a Tuesday), but Café on the Lane
(180–182 George Lane) serves
hearty food with a smile, and
the cakes at Heron’s Nest (Unit 7,
The Galleria) are delicious. Newly
opened is BabyBints (Unit 2a, The
Galleria), which also has a range
of original, personalised gifts for
babies and children.
Children are also well provided
for by Sid and Evie’s (174 George
Lane), which has some original
toys and gifts as well as highquality
clothes. Room 22
(22 Electric Parade) always
has some interesting South
Woodford themed gifts and
All in all, we are spoilt for choice in terms of the
services and shops available
Allen’s Pharmacy (19 Electric
Parade) nearby sells high-end
beauty products, akin to the
beauty floor in John Lewis.
Crescendo (160 George Lane) has
expanded its musical repertoire
to vinyl. On my last visit, the
crates were well stacked with
a wide variety of high-quality
second-hand records. A good
30 minutes’ browsing was repaid
by two long-sought purchases.
In terms of cafes, we are
well served: Tipi Coffee Co
(117 George Lane), Kikirocs
(90 George Lane), and the
ever-popular Little Woodford
Café (118 George Lane) have their
own identity and atmosphere
and compete well against the
national coffee chains (of which
we are, apparently, going to get
another in the not too distant
future). They all sit in the heart
of George Lane, among the wellstocked
charity shops and home
furnishings at either end.
Eating out remains easy. Too
many nationalities of cuisine
to name here, but the choice is
extensive and covers all price
brackets. South Woodford is the
place to dine and there’s a mix
of well-established and newer
restaurants. Indian restaurants
on the High Road range from
the special treats of Grand
Trunk Road (219 High Road) and
the warmth and great value of
the ‘BYOB’ Mohabir (148 High
Road). The Gallery (159–161 High
Road) is doing well and is a
welcoming place to pop into for
lobster or just a glass of wine.
A number of chain restaurants
help to create the necessary
balance for a high street, such as
Prezzo, Zizzi and Nando’s – the
latter newly opened – and all are
busy on a Friday and Saturday
night.
All in all, we are spoilt for choice
in terms of the services and
shops available – a great place
to ‘shop local’.
The South Woodford Village Gazette proudly supports local
businesses and we encourage our readers to do the same.

Relax and take control
Before being diagnosed with cancer in 2016,
Lucy Howe ran a wellness clinic in South Woodford.
Now in remission, she is keen to help others again
with her cancer support group and retreats
Being told you have cancer
is one of the scariest
things you can ever hear.
I know, because I’ve heard the
words: “You have cancer.” That
was the day the world fell out
of my bottom!
Being diagnosed with cancer
four years ago shocked me to
the core, but made me realise
the environment of my body was
out of balance and I was being
warned something needed to
be done.
What can cause cancer? Is it the
toxicity around us or is it stressrelated
from a busy lifestyle?
Who knows? Making choices to
reduce the toxicity in your life,
starting with the food you eat,
targeted organic supplements
and only using good quality
organic skincare will help. As will
keeping your stress levels down
and being happy.
The choices I made helped
me beat cancer and I now live
without the fear of it returning.
I didn’t want cancer to beat me
and there is no way I want it to
come back. Hippocrates said:
“Illnesses do not come upon
us out of the blue. They are
developed from small daily sins
against nature. When enough
sins have accumulated, illness
will suddenly appear.”
Three years into remission and
I’m feeling stronger, healthier and
more confident, having worked
hard with various coaches to
help me with techniques to stop
feeling the fear of it returning.
Now it’s my turn to give back,
empowering people while they
are going through treatment and
beyond. Motivating, supporting
and encouraging them on their
journey to live life to the full,
whether they’ve had cancer
or not.
I ran my first retreat in Cyprus
in 2019, and this year, for my
Relax, Recharge and Take Control
Retreat, I will be on the beautiful
island of Mauritius. I can help you
live your wildest dreams, achieve
all you’ve ever wanted or desired
and get back the confidence to
be ‘you’ again. Hang out with me
for the week in June and you are
in danger of:
• zLearning how to put ‘you’ first
– fixing your own oxygen mask
before helping others!

Lucy delivering a workshop during
her Cyprus retreat last year
• zGetting more confident
every day and falling in love
with yourself.
• zFeeling strong enough
to make your dreams a
reality and be your most
invincible self.
• zLaughing every day.
I want you to live a healthier,
happier life with more
confidence, clarity and
productivity.
loving
life
The BBC is wrong to think
it is bringing life drawing
to the masses in Life
Drawing Live! Life drawing is
inherent in art education for
the simple reason that working
from a live model is a unique,
complex experience.
A life study is a record of the
relationship that exists between
the artist and the sitter. To put
out a programme of life drawing,
even with expert tuition in the
studio, ignores this relationship,
looking at the image of the
model on a flat screen as if it
were a photograph. In drawing,
the aim is to have no obstacles
between the subject and the eye,
the eye and hand, and the hand
and paper.
None of us knows what
we look like
Painting portraits expands
this relationship between two
individuals, one that unfolds as
the two people involved get to
know each other – through time.
One of the strengths of a portrait
is that all of us change all of the
time – emotion, energy levels,
responsiveness. This problem is
felt by artist and sitter; we all feel
different day to day.
A good portrait wants to give you
more than just a representation
Woodford Arts Group
member Ged Rumak explains
his love of life drawing
and why he thinks a good
portrait is more than
just a representation of
the subject
of someone. It wants to break the
rules, to achieve the impossible
by using such little means as
a piece of carbon, charcoal or
ground-up pigment to capture
something of a living person,
something hidden and unseen in
a sitter, often giving the viewer
the same jolt of recognition you
get when spotting someone
you know in the street. Nothing
like photography, it still feels
like the artist is presenting you
with facts.
None of us knows what we look
like. Of course, we see ourselves
in the mirror every day, but
that is a deceptive form that
presents us reversed with our
features carefully arranged in a
way that pleases us. But, in the
end, you are what you look like.
Painting from
photographs is by far
the most common
form of figurative
painting these days.
In this time-short
world, painting
dogmatically from
life is not always
possible, and so,
using photographs
as an ‘aide memoir’
is a practical devise.
But pure copying from a flat,
two-dimensional image more
than misses the point.
Nothing comes close to
painting and drawing the figure
from life in a studio.
Woodford Arts Group’s spring exhibition will take place at
Packfords Hotel, 16 Snakes Lane West, Woodford Green, IG8 0BS
from 29 to 31 May, open from 11.30am to 8pm daily. For more
A project
which has
been bringing the
community together
by collating wartime
memories of Redbridge will
stage a theatre production in
South Woodford this April.
Alfie James reports
Did you know that part
of Beale High School
used to be a prisoner
of war camp and the local
children used to swap coffee
for teabags with the Italian
prisoners through the fence?
From stories of rationing and
being evacuated to blackouts
and bombings, the Hope and
Glory community theatre project
set out to explore what life was
like living in Redbridge during
the Second World War. We have
set up two groups: a group of
researchers meeting regularly
at Redbridge Museum and a
group of local performers using
performance techniques to
explore what life was like during
the period.
Theatre is a great way of
sharing what we have
learnt with others
Thanks to the local press and the
power of social media, as well
as good old-fashioned word of
mouth, the project has already
generated a lot of interest.
We’ve been overwhelmed by
the amount of positive support
received by the community and
we couldn’t thank you enough.
We’ve received emails and
telephone calls from residents
Hope & Glory
wanting to share family stories of
memories. The project has even
reached the wider community
too. We had one former resident
now living in Canada call us with
information and we’re sharing
our research with a school in
Scotland who are learning about
London during the war.
The project would not be
the success it is without the
enthusiasm of our members.
Elizabeth McNally is one such
member and believes the project
is popular because people “love
performing and there’s a real
interest in local history of that
era, and this is a great way of
bringing the two together.”
Local history has been at the
heart of this project and it’s given
us the opportunity to develop
our research skills by learning
how to use archives, artefacts
and how to interview people.
One resident told us how she
remembers a plane crashing
and how the pilot sadly wasn’t
able to eject in time. Another
remembers the first time she
heard the air raid siren as a
young child. What has become
increasingly evident throughout
the project is that there was a
great sense of community and
that people came together and
looked after one another.
The project could not have taken
place without the support of
The Heritage Lottery Fund and
Redbridge Museum. The help
given by the staff at the museum
has been invaluable and it’s been
fantastic to use the rich resources
they have available.
The project is working towards
developing a small play to be
performed at Redbridge Drama
Centre in April. We’re all excited
to be given the opportunity
to share some of what we’ve
learnt with the local community.
Theatre is a great way of bringing
to life and sharing what we
have learnt with others. The
performance, entitled The Spitfire
Club, will bring to life what it
was like growing up during the
Second World War through the
eyes of a group of children and
residents.
The performance will take place at Redbridge Drama Centre on
24 April from 7.30pm (tickets: £5). For more information on the
project, call 07858 625 622 or visit alfiejamesproductions.com
The Zoological Society of London is on the lookout
for citizen scientists to help prevent river pollution,
with a training event in Woodford Green this March.
Conservation biologist Phoebe Shaw Stewart reports
020 8989 9231
72 George Lane,
South Woodford, E18 1JJ
Monday to Friday: 9am – 7pm (Closed Wednesday)
Saturday: 8.30am – 5.30pm | Sunday: 10am – 2.30pm
Throughout March,
intrepid urban explorers
will be making their
way along the banks of the
River Roding in search of
some unusual sightings.
Local citizen scientists will
be trained to search, not for
lions or elephants, but for
the telltale signs of polluting
outfalls as part of conservation
charity Zoological Society of
London’s (ZSL) Outfall Safari
programme.
It’s estimated that around
3% of all properties suffer
from misconnected pipes
Despite the fact this doesn’t
sound quite as exciting as
searching for the African big five,
heterogenous slime (sewage
fungus), food waste, sanitary
‘rag’ or discolouration of water
and foam are the slightly less
glamorous ‘big five’ of outfall
safaris we look out for.
Outfalls are discharge points
for water systems into nearby
rivers or seas, but all too often,
pipes from washing machines
and sewage systems carrying
wastewater are misconnected.
This results in untreated
wastewater entering rivers
through surface water outfalls.
Surface water outfalls are
typically only made up of things
like excess rainwater that runs off
your drive and into the drains,
but largely doesn’t need to be
treated. Herein lies the problem,
with the crossover wreaking
havoc with wildlife.
In London alone, it’s estimated
that around 3% of all properties
suffer from misconnected pipes,
with new kitchen extensions
often being the main perpetrator
with poorly connected washing
machines, kitchen sinks and hand
basins, according to Thames
Water. The misconnections are
one of the core reasons urban
rivers are unable to reach ‘good
ecological potential’ under the
EU Water Framework Directive.
Large pollution events can
quickly deplete water of oxygen
and lead to elevated phosphate
and ammonia levels. This can
cause local wildlife, such as the
126 known fish species recorded
in the Thames, and their habitats
to become at risk.
ZSL’s Outfall Safari helps to
combat this issue by training
citizen scientists across London
to identify these misconnections.
The data is then highlighted to
Thames Water, who fund the
project, and the Environment
Agency through an app to help
tackle the issue. They’re also
illegal, so once identified, they
must be rectified. The method
was first used on the River Crane
in west London, and since then,
has been carried out on over
250km of rivers within Greater
London. So far, data shows
an average of more than two
pollution outfalls identified per
kilometre of river surveyed.
ZSL is always looking for new
volunteers to help identify
misconnections to protect local
wildlife. So, please do sign up if
you would like to be involved.
An Outfall Safari training session will take place at the James Leal
Centre in Ray Park, Woodford Green in partnership with Vision RCL
on 4 March from 1.30pm to 3.30pm – visit swvg.co.uk/os. For more
Robert Putt, who
attended Woodbridge
High School 80 years
ago, is collaborating
with the school’s
History Department
to document his
memories of the area.
In the second of a
series of articles, Robert
talks to Headteacher
Steven Hogan about
World War Two
The History Department
at Woodbridge High was
delighted and extremely
honoured to host an audience
with Mr Putt for our Year 9
students on Armistice Day
last year. As an alumnus of
the school, Mr Putt not only
captured his young audience
with tales of bombed-out
homes, heartbreaking
evacuation and chocolate
gifts from none other than
Clementine Churchill herself,
but was able to bridge the
gap between past and present
students, showing them that
as the years go by, and as
important and life-changing
events take place, the one
constant is that education
liberates us all.
Mr Putt’s visit came, rather
coincidentally, as the History
Department began looking into
the history of the school, and
whilst there is not much to be
found online, we did come across
a rather surprising find: that in
the summer of 1939, mere weeks
before the Second World War
began, a number of boys, along
with their teachers, visited Nazi
Germany and were hosted by the
Hitler Youth.
As a thank you, the
teacher caned every single
member of the class!
The trip was very successful and
good relations were seemingly
formed with the boys from both
countries as promises were
made to host their German
counterparts later in the year.
But it wasn’t to be, the trip being
abruptly ended five days early
due to the growing hostilities
between the German and British
powers. Year 9 had been learning
about this extraordinary school
trip and of the Home Front of the
Second World War, so a group
of 30 were chosen to listen as
Mr Putt spoke of his experiences
of growing up against the
backdrop of war, of the Blitz
spirit, which bolstered so many
to ‘keep calm and carry on’ and
of the strain it inevitably took on
peoples’ lives.
Robert remembers walking
home for lunch one day along
St Barnabas Road when a plane
flew over and he started to run. A
lady came out of her house and
called him and two girls into her
home to take cover in a Morrison
air raid shelter in her back room.
He said: “We could hear the
machine gun firing, then the first
bomb dropped at the end of the
garden and her French windows
were shattered. Glass was flying
everywhere, but thankfully, none
of us was hurt.”
Robert also has very fond
memories of the time. He said
the war really helped with his
understanding of geography as
every day he would sit with his
grandfather and study the maps
in the daily newspapers, showing
where the Allied troops and the
Germans were. He knew the
names and locations of countries
all over the world. He also has
happy memories of the school
dinners, especially the shepherd’s
pie, which he really
enjoyed. He said
they were very good
meals and there was
plenty, despite it
being wartime.
Robert also has very
vivid memories of
some of the teaching
staff, including
Headmaster Colonel
Bransden, Mr Harvey,
the science teacher
(who they called
‘Stinks’, not
because he smelt
but because his
classroom did due to
all the experiments
he undertook!),
Mrs Vale (the only
female teacher) for
history and Mr Laurie
Carr (lots of jokes
were made about his
name!) for geography.
Robert remembered the class
clubbing together to buy one
of the teachers a gift for their
birthday. They bought him
an ashtray (he remembers all
teachers smoking then) and they
wrapped up a
new cane for
him. As a thank
you, the teacher
caned every
single member
of the class!
Summing up,
Robert said:
“I enjoyed my
schooldays more
than anything.
They were
happy days,
despite the war.”
He advised our
students that: “You should always
treasure your schooldays as life
after school becomes repetitive
and is therefore harder to
remember. But your schooldays
are when lots of things are new
and they stick in your memory
forever.”
Green. For more information, visit woodbridgehigh.co.uk.
March / April 2020 21
In the fifth of a series of short stories by members
of South Woodford’s Young Writers Club, Lost in the
Dark Woods is a tale about Goldy, three bears and
three bowls of curry, by seven-year-old Arjun Johal
SOUTH WOODFORD, LOUGHTON AND
BUCKHURST HILL
E: southwoodford@monkeymusic.co.uk
T: 020 8989 7017
Once upon a time there
was a little girl called
Goldy. She had golden
hair as shiny as the sun. She
wore a long sky-blue skirt.
She was walking in the forest
with her mother. She heard a
tweeting noise coming from the
thorny bushes. To her horror she
found a bird tied to a tree. She
quickly untied it. Goldy let the
bird be free. She turned around
to look for her mum but she had
disappeared.
She could feel something hard in
her pocket, and she remembered
she had been given a new mobile
phone for Christmas. She used
the navigation system to help her
get home. The navigation kept
guiding her deeper and deeper
into the dark woods. Out of the
corner of her eye she spotted
a huge house. It looked like an
enormous hotel. As soon as she
stepped into the house the alarm
sounded. She froze like a statue,
paralysed in fear. She dialled 123
into the alarm pad. It worked!
The alarm stopped. She gave a
big sigh of relief.
She turned the lights on and
looked around. Goldy saw a
PlayStation with three different
games. She tried the first game
but it was too hard, she kept
losing. She tried the second
game, it was medium-hard. She
kept getting stuck at the same
place. Finally, she tried the last
game. To her surprise she loved
it and kept winning. It was just
hard enough.
Goldy heard her tummy rumble.
She smelt something delicious.
She followed the smell into
the kitchen. There were three
big bowls of prawn curry with
rice. She slurped down one big
spoonful of the big bowl of curry.
It was too spicy. She guzzled
down a big glass of ice cold
water. After that she cautiously
tried the medium-sized bowl.
It was too sweet and too spicy.
Finally she tried the baby bowl.
It was delicious and she quickly
gobbled it down.
She found three modern
sleeping pods. The first was too
bumpy and uncomfortable.
The second was too rough.
Finally, the last one was just
right. It was warm soft and
cosy. She gave a big yawn and
fell asleep at once. When she
opened her eyes, there were
three angry looking bears. She
was startled. Just then the huge
daddy bear picked Goldy up. He
threw Goldy into a big jar and
shut the lid! Goldy was trapped
like a rat! She did not know
what to do. It was impossible to
get out.
An idea flew into her head. She
tried to shove the bottle off the
shelf. She wanted to smash the
bottle as it was so heavy. She
pushed with all her might. It
started to rock and then to her
delight it toppled off the shelf
and shattered.
The bears heard a loud crash.
They tried to capture Goldy but
they did not succeed. She was
too quick. She ran out of the
house like a bolt of lightning and
retraced her footsteps all the way
home. She told her mother the
whole story.
Good As You: from pride to prejudice 30 years of gay Britain with Paul Flynn
Good As You is an important book that celebrates the seismic shift that turned gay men in Britain from enemies to
friends of the state. It’s a story of how the power of pop culture can place real pressure on the government and the
media, to make tangible steps towards change. From ‘Smalltown Boy’ to same sex marriage, Paul interviews the figures
integral to his own personal
women’s lives
LGBT Feb2019 Flyer_4.indd 2 14/12/2018 16:19
Women from all social class
backgrounds, all ages, all parts
of the United Kingdom and
all life experiences ‘came out’
as suffragettes, many of them
leaving their previous lives
behind forever.
For many years, the suffragettes
were written out of the story
of women getting the vote, or
dismissed as self-interested,
middle-class hobbyists, but
nothing could be further from
the truth.
In 1907, a woollen weaver from
Huddersfield, Dora Thewlis,
aged 16, was called ‘The Baby
Suffragette’ by the newspapers
when she was arrested in
Westminster by the police
while trying to enter Parliament
with other Women’s Social and
Political Union women. Her
mother had put her on the train
to London, telling her to do her
bit for ‘the cause.’
Kitty Marion, a music hall
artiste, was one of several dozen
Good As You is an important book that celebrates
the seismic shift that turned gay men in Britain
from enemies to friends of the state. It’s a story of
how the power of pop culture can place real pressure
on the government and the media, to make
tangible steps towards change.
From ‘Smalltown Boy’ to same sex marriage, Paul
interviews the figures integral to his own
personal journey and to so many young gay men
who found their voices were finally being heard in
the 1980s. Paul speaks to Holly Johnson about anthems,
Kylie Minogue about icons, and Will Young
and Davina McCall about the landmark of reality
TV. He speaks to Gary Hailes about being half of
the first gay couple on EastEnders, and to David
Furnish about being in one of the first publically
celebrated gay couples in the UK.
But for Paul, Good As You is as much about
celebrating the unsung heroes out of the limelight.
Alison, a life-long friend talks about the
individuals she met and helped undergoing
treatment for HIV at The Lighthouse, while
activist Rupert Whitaker, discusses his early
encounters with an unknown disease, his own
diagnosis and the impetus behind the Terrence
Higgins Trust.
This is the story of Britain’s brothers, cousins and
sons. Sometimes it is the story of their fathers and
husbands. It is one of public outrage and personal
performers loss, the (not always legal) who highs and were the desperate part of the
lows, and the final collective victory as gay people
struggle: were final recognised, in as Kitty’s Good As You. case, her road
to militancy came after years
of enduring sexual harassment
while trying to earn a living.
worker from Oldham and
senior figure in the movement,
deliberately put her already frail
health at risk by going on hunger
strike and being force-fed in
prison.
I first became aware of the
suffragettes when I worked at
the Museum of London, which
has the largest archive in the
world devoted to the militant
struggle. In 1992 I curated an
exhibition, Purple, White and
Green: Suffragettes in London
1906–1914, which told the story
of their brilliant marketing
and merchandising skills in
promoting their demand for
votes for women, alongside their
daring and dangerous struggle,
imprisonment, hunger-striking
and force-feeding.
Sylvia Pankhurst – who lived in
Woodford Green from 1924 to
1956 – makes many appearances
in the book, as do her east
London comrades who gave her
so much support.
The centenary of the first
instalment of women’s suffrage
in 2018, which was an important
moment to celebrate the work of
the suffragettes of the Women’s
Social and Political Union,
also made clear that there is
still much work to be done to
improve women’s lives.
Conveying Professionalism
Conveyancing is a vital part of the process of buying
or selling a property. Here, Debra Rose from Wiseman
Lee Solicitors explains the steps and why it is
important to choose a professional to do the job
Conveyancing refers to the
legal work that is carried
out when ownership of a
property is transferred. Most
conveyancing is carried out
professionally, but sometimes,
buyers and sellers ask
whether it is possible to do it
themselves.
Conveyancing without the use of
professional help is risky because
you may not be protected in
the event you miss something
which could have been revealed
by conveyancers, meaning
your property is not worth the
purchase price. The other party
to the transaction may demand
you use a professional for the
transfer of funds to ensure the
appropriate money laundering
checks are carried out and they
have the protection afforded by
the Law Society’s Completion
Code. Additionally, many
mortgage lenders will require
you use a conveyancer to protect
their investment.
Once you decide you want to buy
or sell, you will need to instruct
a conveyancer. The estate agent
will prepare a memorandum
confirming the terms of the sale,
which will be sent to the person
representing you. This includes
the party’s details, the price and
any special conditions, such as
other items being included in
the price. The sale is not legally
binding until the contracts are
formally exchanged.
The seller’s representative sends
the contract pack to the buyer.
This contains copies of the title
to the property, questionnaires
completed by the sellers about
the property and the contract
itself. Upon receipt of the
contract pack, your conveyancer
will then undertake a series
of searches with the local
authority and other agencies to
find out if there are any issues
that could affect the property.
Searches such as planning,
environmental and drainage and
water are carried out in almost
all transactions. Depending on
where your property is located,
it may also be necessary to
conduct other searches. If
you are happy to proceed,
contracts are exchanged and
the completion date is fixed.
At this stage, the sale is legally
binding to complete on the
agreed date.
Your conveyancer undertakes
the post-exchange work in
anticipation of completion,
which involves reporting to your
lender to ensure mortgage funds
are available for completion.
Conveyancers on both sides
produce completion statements
which show all payments made
and received and request any
further monies required for
the purchase to complete. The
conveyancer will undertake
final searches and on the day of
completion sends the purchase
money to the seller.
Once the seller’s conveyancer
receives the funds, they will
confirm completion and the
agent will release the keys to
you. Your conveyancer will
then deal with the registration
formalities and you will be sent
a copy of the Land Registry
entries that confirm your
ownership.
26 South Woodford Village Gazette
DD’s 40 th Woodford Diary
Some South Woodford scribbles from DD,
our resident diarist, commentator and
observer of all things local
When my children were
young, one of their
favourite television
programmes featured
Mr Benn. He wore a black suit
and a bowler hat. Each week,
he left his home at 52 Festive
Road to visit a fancy-dress
shop. The shopkeeper had
a moustache and wore a
fez and invited Mr Benn
to try on an outfit before
leaving the shop through a
magic door in the back of the
changing room to find himself
in another world, appropriate
to his costume. A stone-age
village perhaps, the court of
a king and his pet dragon,
a balloon race against the
villainous Baron Burtrum.
Mr Benn returned safely back
to the shop and the magic door
closed behind him before the
programme ended.
We can get to doors in E18
shortly, but meanwhile, let’s think
of doors further afield. The door
through which Dorothy and her
dog Toto emerged, from black
and white into full technicolour,
as she stepped onto the yellow
brick road leading to the Emerald
City and the Wizard of Oz. And
Alice on her way to Wonderland
via the rabbit hole. “She came
upon a low curtain and behind it
a little door about 15 inches high.”
By crouching down, she could
look through it at “the loveliest
garden you ever saw.” But, of
course, she “could not even get
her head through it.” But she did
when she swallowed the Drink
Me potion and found herself
shrinking to fit the door. She
proceeded through it into the
world of the Mad Hatter and the
Queen of Hearts.
It seemed more like a
traditional craft, with no
computers in sight
There is something teasing about
‘closed doors’. What lies behind
them? After the last edition of
the Gazette, I was delighted to
receive from one of our readers
a colourful insight into what
has been known to go on in
the library when the doors are
closed. She had worked there
for many years in the 70s. The
‘bookmarks’ found in returned
books included (can you believe
it!) a complete skeleton from
a cooked fish, a rasher of raw
bacon, a banknote and a greasy
hair comb. One branch librarian
was a huge fan of opera. Before
opening the doors to the public,
he would play an entire aria at
full blast, filling the space with
sound as if to compensate for
the hours of imposed silence
that would follow.
Several of our shops have a
door marked “Staff Only”, even
in such modest surroundings as
the charity shops. You wonder
what hidden treasures lurk out
of sight amongst the jumble
of goods yet to be sorted
and priced. When you wait,
powerless, in the post office
queue, an insider glides past
you through a door magically
opened by someone unseen
pressing the release button.
At the back of the instrument
shop, Crescendo, there is an
insignificant, ordinary-looking
door, but if you go through it,
you find yourself in a music
academy, a row of fully-equipped
music studios. Only yards from
the tomatoes and cos lettuces
and spring onions spilling out
from the International Store. (If
the shop is shut, you are invited
to “go round the side” and locate
yet another door on your way
to a music lesson.) A year or two
ago I enrolled rather rashly at
Curves, on the first floor opposite
Posners. You needed a code to
open the door and mount the
stairs to the array of exercise
machines that were going to
strengthen every muscle in your
body. But Curves has gone. Who
is occupying that space now? I
wondered. Annie at ground level
in her Baan Spa salon tipped
me off. “They’re called Konsus
Accountants, I believe.” I pressed
the buzzer, the door opened and
I climbed the familiar stairs, more
out of breath than I remembered
in those fitter days.
I confess I was
expecting a row
of desks with mathematicallyminded
men in suits busy
accounting. What a surprise
when I hello-ed in through the
door to be greeted by three
smiling young faces belonging
to Vestina, Ilona and Vilma. Doors
can hide a surprise.
And, of course, some doors need
to be securely locked and can
only be opened with a key. We
have a wealth of key-cutters in
South Woodford: Martin opposite
the cinema, Omega opposite
Tesco Express and Timpsons
as you approach Sainsbury’s. I
called in to see Daniel at James
Shoe Care, next to the station
in Lower George Lane. He’s a
multitasker. During my visit, he
confidently handled various
requests: “Do you sell something
to help you get your shoes on?” A
shoe horn materialised. “My new
leather shoes have got stained.
Can you help?” “No problem!” “My
watch strap is loose.” “Yes, bring
it in and I’ll have it sorted.” He
enjoyed serving his customers.
Solving their problems. All this as
© Evelyn Rowland
evelynrowland.co.uk
well as key-cutting. Soon, I was
being given a demonstration.
“Does it involve electronics?” I
asked. “No way. Come and see. I’ll
show you.” Hundreds of different
groups of keys, different ‘profiles’.
Finding the right keys for the job.
Lining them up on the machine.
Judgement, skill, experience. It
seemed more like a traditional
craft, with no computers in
sight. “If it’s security keys, I send
them up to Martin,” he said.
Daniel has been cutting keys
for 16 years, two years here. “It
used to be Stan. He ran this shop
for 40 years. It was his brother
who trained me. At Timpsons,
actually.” (Just like the tattooists
I wrote about some months
ago, they all seem to know
each other.)
I should mention that I have just
been away. A long way away.
Roughly 4,000 miles away where
I enjoyed battered dolphin with
fried plantain for lunch. Lime pie
too, sometimes. Wonderful! But
on my return, I was more than
happy to unlock my front door
and step inside.

PHOTO STORY
In the fourth of a series
of articles by members
of the Woodford
and Wanstead
Photographic
Society, Anila Hussain
tells the story
behind this image
of the Reichstag
staircase
Architecture was one
of the first things
I photographed. It
opened another door called
perspectives. Every angle,
every viewpoint; the structure
looked so different to me.
I challenge myself to see how I
can photograph one building but
use every angle possible, giving
it a completely different view.
Great light also plays havoc with
the shadows. I find it exciting. I
never look at anything head-on.
I still photograph everything,
but for some unknown reason,
architecture pulls me in more
and more.
In any city I visit, I will always look
for architecture and perspectives.
Apart from liking what Foster and
Partners create abroad and in
London, my other most favourite
architect is the late, great Zaha
Hadid. Her curvaceous structures,
which bring a feminine flair to
such a male-dominated area,
are jaw-dropping. The results are
just superb. I think my dream
job would be to travel the world,
photographing her superb
creations with my own added
flair.
When visiting Berlin, it’s a must to
pre-book a tour at the Reichstag.
My advice: book it for an hour
before sunset. That way, you can
capture the glass spiral staircase
in a wonderful light, and believe
me, it’s stunning. A favourite by
architects Foster and Partners,
its innovative design shows
one way up and another way
down. The creative flair makes
it mesmerising and leaves you
wondering how.
Sometimes, it’s good not to stick
to one form of photography. I
always aspire to try everything,
then chose what I adore. At the
moment, I’m photographing
flowers and food. Tomorrow, it
could be something else. Keep
challenging your abilities.
A
celebration was held
in February to thank
all supporters and
collectors who helped us to
raise the fantastic amount
of £100,000 over the last few
years, paying for 5,000 Marie
Curie nursing hours.
We get wonderful support from
our local communities with
local businesses donating raffle
prizes, Wanstead High School
donating the proceeds from their
annual charity cross country run,
Wanstead House holding cake
and coffee mornings to raise
money and students from Forest
School helping out at our Great
Daffodil Appeal collections.
The group was formed in June
2013 with four members who had
all been local supporters of the
Marie Curie charity. The initial
aim of the group was to raise
awareness of the work of the
charity in the local area as well as
to fundraise. At that time, we did
not set ourselves a target – this
evolved as the amount of money
raised increased each year.
Group membership has changed
over the years, and we always
welcome new members, as they
bring new ideas and energy to
our group. Members commit as
little or as much time as they can,
and the larger the group, the
more money can be raised each
year.
To raise money, the group
now hosts about 20 street and
store collections, runs two quiz
evenings each year, has stalls
at the Wanstead Festival and
Disability Awareness day and
Members of the Wanstead,
Woodford and Barkingside
Marie Curie Fundraising Group
holds tea and coffee afternoons.
Residents have quickly come
to recognise the bright yellow
uniforms – especially the hats –
of our collectors and can be seen
proudly wearing Marie Curie
stickers and daffodil pins.
The Marie Curie charity has, in
recent years, widened its services
to offer support to anyone with
a life-threatening illness in the
last few weeks of their life. A free
support line (0800 090 2309)
also offers help and advice to
people with a terminal illness
and to their families and friends.
Marie Curie nurses and health
care assistants work in the local
area to provide free, overnight
home nursing care, enabling
people to make the choice to
die in their own homes, knowing
they and their family will be
well supported and cared for. A
rapid response service, as well
as a day respite service, is also
available in Redbridge. These are
supported by the money raised
by local groups. Feedback from
local families acknowledges
the important role nurses play
in giving the patient dignity in
dying.
People living in the local area
have played their part too by
volunteering as collectors or
donating generously when
they see our collectors at local
venues. The street collections
for the Great Daffodil Appeal
will take place on 7 March, so
expect to see a blaze of yellow
on Wanstead High Street and
George Lane. If you feel you
could offer two hours of your
time to help at these collections,
please get in touch.
Rising at Molehill Green in Essex, the River Roding passes
through the Wanstead and Woodford area en route to the
Thames, bringing with it a very real flood risk to local homes. In
the eighth of a series of articles, Nina Garner from the Environment
Agency reports on the River Roding Project, which aims to
reduce that risk. Photo by Geoff Wilkinson
On Saturday 21 December
2019, the Environment
Agency issued flood
alerts and warnings along the
River Roding due to heavy
rainfall. These informed local
residents of a risk of flooding
and covered areas including
Woodford, Ilford, Barking,
Loughton and East Ham.
Floating
IDEAS
Although no properties were
flooded in 2019, the river peaked
at 7am on 21 December, reaching
1.83m. This river level reached
was the highest on record since
the 2000 floods. The 2000 floods
caused widespread disruption
to major roads across Redbridge
and approximately 400
properties were affected.
The recent flooding caused some
disruption to local residents
and the Roding Valley parkrun
was cancelled as the route was
flooded, leaving the local runners
disappointed.
Check the water level
on the River Roding
Prepare, act, survive
Whether you live on a hill, in a flat
or in an area that’s never flooded
before, flooding can still affect
you. Flooding not only puts
homes, possessions and families
at risk but can cause serious
disruption to commuting routes,
whether that be to school, work
or a place of worship.
Due to our changing climate,
there is a chance that flood
events will become more
common and extreme.
Knowing what to do in a flood
is important to help reduce
the impact of flooding to your
loved ones, your property and
your possessions. The good
news is that there are some
simple actions you can take to
prepare for flooding. These small
actions, outlined below, could
help keep you and your
family safe.
Knowing what to do in a flood
could save your life. Find out
if your home, business or
local area is at risk of flooding
(swvg.co.uk/flood or call
Floodline on 0345 988 1188). If
you live in a flood-risk area, do
what you can now to prepare for
a flood. Don’t wait until it’s too
late.
• zSign up to our flood
warning system
(swvg.co.uk/floodwarn).
• zCreate a
personal flood
plan. This plan
should include
a list of things
you should do
(like moving
sentimental
items to
safety) and
provides
space for you to
note down important contact
details, such as your utility
companies and insurance.
• zCheck the water level
on the River Roding. You
can do this by using the
monitoring webcam
(swvg.co.uk/rodingcam)
2,000 homes better
become more climate change
resilient and reduce flooding to
over 2,000 homes by 2080.
Subject to securing full funding,
we hope to submit our planning
application for the project
in late summer. We will hold
information events for you to
comment on our final plans
before we submit. We will invite
you once we have a date, so
please keep an eye out for more
information.
Wanstead Park has
had a variety of uses,
styles and functions
over hundreds of years. It has
been a royal retreat, a deer
park, a landscaped garden
and, since 1882, a public open
space managed as part of
Epping Forest. Many surviving
features of its long history are
still there if you know where to
find them!
If you enter Wanstead Park from
its western end, through the
Blake Hall entrance, you enter
an area known as Reservoir
Wood. Walk for perhaps 150 yards
and you will come upon a
magnificent oak to the right,
with huge outstretched branches
and with a newly cleared ‘halo’
around it. It is believed to be a
‘bundle tree’, which means it was
not grown from one sapling but
a number of young trees planted
together in one hole. The object
was to produce a large specimen
tree with a spreading form, as all
the stems merge into one huge,
fluted trunk. This was a practice
associated with the late Georgian
landscaper Humphry Repton,
and the tree is known as the
‘Repton Oak’ after him. Humphry
Repton did produce proposals
for Wanstead Park in 1813, in one
of his last major projects, and the
tree was probably planted not
long after.
Reservoir Wood was named
after a lake which once occupied
the area. In fact, it stretched
from the golf course to beyond
Woodlands Avenue, and from
Blake Hall Road to a large
embankment, which is now cut
by the path a little way beyond
the Repton Oak. The Reservoir
was drained by 1818, probably
because of problems with the
water supply. Its site was planted
with a wood, perhaps to block
the open view of Wanstead
House from the public road.
…a long-term restoration
and management
programme…
The path continues to the east,
past the Heronry Pond and, as
you pass the second of the two
islands, the Temple comes into
view. Built around 1760, it seems
originally to have been planned
as a small building with an earth
mound to the front, making it
look as though it was sitting on
top of a small hill, and looking
some of Wanstead
Park’s secrets and
the surviving
features of its long
history. Photo of
the Repton Oak by
Richard Arnopp
like a beautiful Roman temple
you would expect to see in the
romantic 17th-century paintings
by Lorrain and Poussin. At a
slightly later date, or perhaps
even while construction was still
in progress, two brick wings were
added, making the structure sit
heavier within the landscape.
Perhaps these were intended
to house the menagerie, which
we know the building was later
used for.
Bearing around to the left of the
Temple, taking the vehicle track
to Warren Road, you will notice
a huge evergreen yew tree. The
path here leads past a big mound
in the woods, which is covered
in bluebells in the spring. This
path leads out onto the Great
Ride, and if you walk across the
ride, you will find another, larger,
mound. The two Mounts, as
they were known, were roughly
symmetrical features on either
side of the Great Ride, designed
to allow visitors to get above the
highly formal garden to view the
mazes and avenues. From above
you could have made sense
of the complex formal garden
designs. The Mounts would have
had a spiral path leading to their
summits and the northern one
seems to have been crowned
by a little temple. Today, they
are overgrown sentinels of a
300-year-old landscape that
once covered huge areas, with
avenues radiating out across
Wanstead Flats to Leytonstone
and Forest Gate.
The work of the Friends of
Wanstead Parklands is to reveal
these secrets in cooperation
with the owners of the various
parts of the park, the main
owner being the Corporation
of London. The landowners and
other stakeholders, including
the Friends, have jointly created
a Parkland Plan, which sets out
a long-term restoration and
management programme that
respects history, people and
nature.
Puppy Love
Colin Spence runs dog training classes in Snaresbrook
their owners – for 23 years. Here, he explains how
much exercise a puppy needs
SOCIAL LIFE SKILLS CLASSES
This is a much-talkedabout
topic and a
conversation I have with
new puppy owners on a daily
basis, as many are not sure
how much exercise their very
young puppy should get.
Only give puppies five
minuets of exercise for
each month of their life
Well, let’s take a look at this and
what we trainers and behaviour
practitioners believe in how
much is too much and how much
is just right and why.
Once we get our eight-weekold
puppy home, for the first
few hours or first few days, they
will be getting used to their
new environment, moving
around the home, investigating
CLASSES COST £10 EACH everything. As the hours and
days go by, puppies get more
the 16-week mark, will have had
their last injection and be ready
to exercise and explore the
outside environment.
Please book in advance.
Call Colin Spence: Many owners then take their
puppy out for a walk; some
07931 460 451 even allow the puppy to start
running and jumping obstacles.
Allowing puppies to exercise
outside is important, but it is
also important that the common
sense factor comes into play.
Puppies are very vulnerable
creatures, and if we allow them
to be over-exercised from a
very young age, we are very
likely setting them up to fail.
Why? Because they are still
growing and their growth plates
are at the very early stages of
developing and coming together
and strengthening. If we allow
puppies to have too much
exercise while they are young,
they will put too much pressure
on their joints and can have
problems, such as arthritis, in
the future.
As a rule of thumb, we should
only give puppies five minutes of
exercise for each month of their
life; for example, a four-monthold
puppy can have 20 minutes
of gentle exercise, nothing
strenuous, and please take
into consideration the exercise
your puppy already has in the
I am also asked if owners can
take their puppy out jogging
with them. The answer here is
we should not allow puppies
to jog with us until they are
fully grown and have good,
strong, healthy growth plates.
We also need to take into
consideration the breed. A
border collie, for example, may
fare well on an hour’s jogging,
but the dachshund, with its very
short legs, could find this very
uncomfortable.
So please, let’s take our puppies
wellbeing seriously and let them
grow into healthy, strong dogs
with good healthy ligaments.
Good As You: from pride to prejudice 30 years of gay Britain with Paul Flynn
Good As You is an important book that celebrates the seismic shif tha turned gay men in Britain from enemies to
friends of the state. It’s a story of how the power of pop culture can place real pre sure on the government and the
media, to make tangible steps towards change. From ‘Sma ltown Boy’ to same sex ma riage, Paul interviews the figures
integral to his own personal
journey and to so many
young gay men who found
their voices were fina ly
being heard in the 1980s.
This is the story of public
the (not always legal) highs
and the desperate lows, and
the final co lective victory
as gay people were fina ly
Good As You is an important book that celebrates
how the power of pop culture can place real pressure
on the government and the media, to make
From ‘Smalltown Boy’ to same sex ma riage, Paul
interviews the figures integral to his own
personal journey and to so many young gay men
who found their voices were finally being heard in
the 1980s. Paul speaks to Holly Johnson about anthems,
Kylie Minogue about icons, and Will Young
and Davina McCall abou the landmark of reality
TV. He speaks to Gary Hailes about being half of
the first gay couple on EastEnders, and to David
Furnish about being in one of the first publically
celebrated gay couples in the UK.
But for Paul, Good As You is as much about
celebrating the unsung heroes out of the limelight.
Alison, a life-long friend talks abou the
individuals she met and helped undergoing
treatment for HIV at The Lighthouse, while
activist Rupert Whitaker, discusses his early
encounters with an unknown disease, his own
diagnosis and the impetus behind the Te rence
Hi gins Trust.
This is the story of Britain’s brothers, cousins and
sons. Sometimes it is the story of their fathers and
husbands. It is one of public outrage and personal
loss, the (not always legal) highs and the desperate
lows, and the final collective victory as gay people
were final recognised, as G od As You.
