News & Views

from the

Boardroom

Today we extend a warm Paycare Ground welcome to the players,

supporters and officials of local rivals Wednesfield FC. After a poor

start to the season Wednesfield are the in form team in the Division

with 6 straight wins so we expect another difficult game tonight. Win,

lose or draw the players and officials will be most welcome to join us

for post match hospitality.

This Sunday The FA Leagues Committee are meeting with the Step 5

and Step 6 Leagues throughout the Country to discuss in more detail

the restructuring proposals for season 2020/21. As a consequence,

the WMRL Management Committee have arranged a League meeting

on Monday (3 February) to inform clubs of the latest restructuring

news. I do not expect to hear much more detail than we are already

aware of but I will update everyone at our AGM on Wednesday 5

February.

With that in mind all are welcome to attend the AGM in the clubhouse

a week tomorrow starting at 7.30pm. It would be lovely to see many of

you there.

Last Saturdayʼs game at Bewdley Town included an historic moment

in the history of the club since we re-formed in 2013. We had two

Youth Team players aged 16 and 17 on the bench with our

youngest ever player Alex Groucott making his debut as a

3

second half substitute. Unfortunately for Malachi Wilkes the younger of

the two remained on the bench but I am sure his chance will come.

Finally a reminder about our monthly fundraising nights with some of

the top Tribute Acts in the Country. The first of which sees the return of

Stacy Green as PINK this coming Saturday 1st February. For further

details and please see the posters, website and our social media for

more information.

Thank you for your continued support and enjoy this eveningʼs game

View from the Dugout

Good evening and welcome back to the

Paycare Ground, since the last home game

we have played two away games, tonight’s

makes it now three games in six days and

as we are all aware it's been a tough few

weeks for us, especially with all of the

injuries and illness the squad are suffering

from at the moment.

The AFC Bridgnorth game was a strange

one I thought we played reasonably well in

the first half, controlling the possession.

Ricardo scored his second good goal of the

season. We went in at half time 1-0 to the

good. To be honest at that point, I thought

if we upped our performance in the second

half by 10%, we could have gone on to win

the game comfortably. A sloppy start to the

second half cost us massively along with all

of the missed chances in both halves that

should have been taken.

In the end we got caught, by a counter attacking goal as Bridgnorth broke forward

with pace from defence to level the game at 1-1. We never reached the levels of our

first half performance and we became complacent. To lose the game in the manner

we did is definitely unacceptable. After the game a few chosen words were said in

the changing room.

We travelled to Nuneaton Griff last Wednesday for a County FA Midweek Floodlit

Challenge Cup. We were able to welcome a few players back from injury for the

game, plus it provided a welcome break from the pressures of league. Nuneaton Griff

who play at the same level as us in the Midland League had won four of their last six

games. We knew the trip to their Pringles Stadium was going to be really difficult, but

in a one-off game anything can happen.

We made the worst possible start going 1-0 down after 60 seconds. Once again, we

let ourselves down conceding a silly free kick just outside our penalty area straight

from the kick off. Nuneaton took full advantage punishing us with a superbly taken

free kick that flew into the top corner. Thankfully minutes later the scores were level

after Dan Cresswell hit a sweet free kick low into the bottom right hand

corner. It was a great response, you could see the confidence start to flow

7

8

through the team, we started to control periods of play in the first half and got our

second goal which we deserved. Once again, we hit the self-destruct button before

half time another mistake led to a simple tap in for Nuneaton Griff making the game 2

-2. I was extremely frustrated and angry at half time, as over the last two months

we've let teams off the hook when we have been in good positions, killing ourselves.

You cannot make basic mistakes because at this level you get punished.

We asked the players in the second half to get back to basics, work for each other

and get the communication bang on as well as playing with the belief we had shown

earlier in the season. We went onto score another two unanswered goals in the

second half giving us a 4-2 win and a place in the semi-final draw. The lads fully

deserved the win and worked hard all night; I believe the Darlo fans that travelled

away to the game would agree.

The win on Wednesday came at a cost we lost even more players to injury; we knew

Saturday’s game at Bewdley was going to be a mammoth task. We run a tight ship

and have the smallest squad in the league by some distance, so to find out we would

have 7 players unavailable for the game was a massive blow, something we never

expected to happen. We didn't have the time to bring anyone in at such short notice,

so we signed Malachi Wilkes & Alex Groucutt from our Darlaston Town Youth U18’s

side.

To get something out of second placed Bewdley we had to think and do something

out of the box, tweaking our formation and tactics. We went with a game plan and

boy it nearly worked, we nearly scored 12 seconds into the game and nearly nicked a

goal in the second half from some good approach play.

Bewdley won the game 2-0 and did so with the energy of their subs one of which

was their joint top scorer Dylan Hart who bagged the two goals in the last 5 minutes

of the game. I honestly thought we were going to pull off the impossible. I was

distraught for the boys who had given me and the club everything they had in the

tank. To lose the game 2-0 so late on was hard to take.

But we took loads of positives from the game, one of the biggest was to have a 16

year old and 17 year old in the squad and Alex making his debut after playing in the

youth set up for a number of years was great to see. And some lads coming in who

had not played a lot recently showing their qualities making tonight's game

interesting when we select the XI to start.

Tonight's local derby game against Wednesfield Town is another hard game. Being so

local to each other adds spice and grit to the fixture. We lost 1-0 at Wednesfield four

weeks ago, after a full bloodied affair with neither side giving any quarter. We expect

the same again tonight as Wednesfield will be full of confidence because of an

unbeaten run of six league games. We know they will pose a real threat this evening

and we will need to be at our best to get anything from the game.

Bewdley Town 2

Darlaston Town 1874 0

Darlaston made the long trip hoping to complete the double after

inflicting second placed Bewdley's first defeat of the season in October.

The odds were stacked against the visitors with Darlaston in a spell of

poor form and with seven first team regulars unavailable, but it took two

goals in the final 5 minutes to finally breakdown a resilient and well

marshalled defence.

The story could have been so different had luck been on Darlaston's side

as they hit the bar on 12 seconds immediately after the start of the

game. Luke Charlton set up Jamie Holder who unleashed a superb volley

from 25 yards which hit the cross bar with keeper Joe Sidaway

well beaten. 10

It took Bewdley

until the 11th

minute for their

first shot on

goal. A shot

come cross from

Ellis Stubbins

wide on the right

was superbly

palmed over the

bar by keeper

Connor Hopkins.

Live wire 18 goal

striker Luke

Morris was a

constant threat

and it took a

superb last-ditch

block by stand in central defender Dahmarnae Sinclair to deny the

striker.

The game was largely confined to a midfield battle with clear cut chances

few and far between. Jamie Holder, Luke Charlton, Dan Cresswell, Reis

Nadat and makeshift midfielder Luke Wilson were excellent in midfield

thwarting the Bewdley threat whilst also prompting and probing to set up

Tyrone Clarke O'Connell and Isaac Cooper who kept the Bewdley back

line busy with their own goal threat.

On 42 minutes Bewdley's Matt Kerby unleashed a superb angled volley

from 25 yards which thudded against the bar. A minute later Kerby

produced a fine fingertip save from Hopkins to keep the scores level at

the break.

The second half

followed a similar

pattern, the work

rate of both sides

was impressive

with chances

largely confined

to long range

efforts which

keepers Sidaway

and Hopkins

dealt with

comfortably.

Bewdley had the

better

of the

11

play but Darlaston's back three of Sinclair, Liam Smith and Ryan Jones

cleared any danger. Kerby, Sam Lester and Luke Sidaway all had long

range efforts whilst Darlaston responded with a Clarke O'Connell effort

blocked by Sam Prescott.

On 80 minutes 17-year old substitute Alex Groucott and Tyrone Clarke

O'Connell both had chances to put the visitors ahead in a goal mouth

scramble but superb goal line blocking challenges by Bewdley defenders

kept the home goal intact.

Darlaston's players, management and large travelling contingent of fans

had their hearts broken in the 86th minute when prolific striker Dylan

Hart netted his 18th goal of the season. After being set clear down the

left Hart cut inside and unleashed an 18 yard strike across keeper

Hopkins into the bottom left hand corner to give Bewdley the lead, As

the visitors pushed on in desperate search of an equaliser they left

themselves exposed at the back and on 89 minutes a sublime piece of

finishing saw Hart on target again lifting a 18 yard effort over the

advancing Hopkins to put the game beyond doubt.

Darlaston never gave up and Jamie Holder headed over the bar in the

final minute and in added time Dan Cresswell's curling free kick was well

saved by Sidaway in the Bewdley goal.

Whilst Bewdley had the better of the play the work rate and

quality of the Darlaston play was impressive and suggested

that their early season form is returning. 12

Nuneaton Griff 2

McEwan 1, Miles 36

Darlaston Town 1874 4

Cresswell 3, Hough 20, Agyemang 53, Taylor 68

Darlaston progressed to the semi-final of the Birmingham FA Midweek

Cup with their first win in 6 games at Midland League Nuneaton Griff.

The visitors got off to the worst possible start conceding a goal in the

first minute. A Connor McEwan free kick from 25 yards finding the top

corner despite a valiant attempt by keeper Connor Hopkins.

Within 90 seconds the scores were level. A Reece Williams handball 25

yards out was punished by Dan Cresswell's free kick low into the

keeper's bottom right hand corner.

The game settled into a midfield battle the better chances falling to

the visitors with Isaac Cooper, Zico Agyemang and Leon Taylor all

failing to convert difficult chances.

For the home side Joe Miles and Ross Proudlock were

dangerous but Ricardo Ricketts and Lucas Hough stood firm to

14

thwart any danger.

Following a period of

pressure Darlaston went

ahead on 20 minutes. An

Isaac Cooper throw in

was only partly cleared

back to Cooper whose

low drive into the penalty

area was superbly

volleyed home by the

onrushing Lucas Hough

from 6 yards.

The equaliser came on

36 minutes. Poor defending at a corner eventually saw keeper

Hopkins fumble the ball at the feet of Joe Miles who had the simplest

of tasks to tap home from 2 yards.

The visitors went ahead on 53 minutes. A clearance by Hopkins found

Leon Taylor who exchanged passes with Zico Agyemang before a halfhit

shot was fumbled by keeper Joe Salisbury, Agyemang was first to

respond hooking the ball home from 8 yards. Minutes later Reis Nadat

thought he had doubled the lead as his powerful header from a

Cooper corner rattled the crossbar before rebounding to safety.

Clear cut chances were few and far between but Darlaston now had

the upper hand and doubled their lead on 68 minutes, an Isaac

Cooper drive was parried by Salisbury into the path of Taylor who

converted from 10 yards.

A minute later Nuneaton had their only clear-cut chance of the second

half a near post effort from Joe Miles well saved by Hopkins.

Cooper brought a good save from Salisbury and Luke Wilson and

Agyemang both missed chances to put the game beyond doubt.

Whilst still short of their

best there were clear

signs that some

confidence

was

returning to a previously

out of sorts Darlaston

and there were some

excellent periods of play

with Ricardo Ricketts

and full back Sam

Causton both impressing

with several marauding

runs down the

right wing.

HEARD the one about the football team that have to play 16 games away

and only eight at home?

Meet Alderney FC – the club who have to raise £50,000 in an Island Games

year, play four double headers a season in Guernsey’s Priaulx League and

haven’t won a Muratti Vase game in 100 years.

That’s only part of an amazing football story being played out on the small

Channel Island located 60 miles from the south coast of England and less

than ten miles from France. But despite their declining resident population

clocking in at just under 1,800 people, Alderney football is in a positive

place.

Having finished runners-up in their league last year, they are once again

battling it out for the title. They’re dreaming of ending their century long

wait for a win in the Muratti when they take on Guernsey in March.

A recent email into The NLP inbox asked if we’d fancy telling the story of

football on Alderney. It was an interesting piece to write. My knowledge of

the Muratti pretty much started and finished with Guernsey and Jersey

playing in the final every year and the rivalry being fierce.

But Alderney have been getting closer to a final appearance and they

dream of upsetting the odds – and the programme printers, with chairman

Reg Atkins joking they are printed before the result of Alderney’s semi-final

is even played out!

“Two-and-a-half years ago we were playing Jersey and we were 1-0 down,”

Atkins told me. “We equalised in the second minute of injury time. They

went mad, the crowd went mad, I went mad. Unfortunately, we then went

and conceded a minute later!

“So we have run them close. In 2002 was the first time we had a chance of

winning when, would you believe, Chopper Harris was Jersey manager.

“We got it back to 2-1 and hit the bar in the 90th-minute. They

16

hadn’t allowed for extra time and booked to be on the earlier plane.”

Travel on and off Alderney can be an issue. It’s not uncommon for players

to get stuck off the island when the fog sets in. In the winter flights don’t

run so their regular leagues games in Guernsey are crammed in before

October to avoid a late season pile-up.

When The NLP speaks to Atkins, he’s just off the phone after rearranging

an away game that can’t be played because of a waterlogged pitch. The

alternative of playing on an artificial surface would have only allowed for

30 minutes to get changed and back to the airport. And that wasn’t taking

stoppage time into consideration.

What is also remarkable is the players’ commitment to the cause and their

league programme. Of the 24 games, they have to play two-thirds away.

Each player forks out £900 towards the costs of flights and hotels for the

double-headers.

They’ll play one game on the Friday night before the second Saturday

lunch time – imagine that in the Premier League!

“No one is ever whinging about it – we all enjoy our football that much

that we just get on with it,” manager Josh Concanen says. “We’re happy to

help the club out financially because it’s a huge expense for an amateur

football team. Especially with how much flights are to get off the island.

You get fogged in but that’s just part of it.”

Atkins has big ambition off the pitch. They want to extend the clubhouse,

which currently only holds 35, while improving their changing rooms

before eventually laying a 3G pitch. He also hopes an sports hall will be

built one day as, currently, there is nowhere to train indoors.

Jumble sales bring in funds and people can also pay £10 to become a Vice

President.

Whether 100 years of Muratti hurt will end this spring remains to be seen.

But imagine the scenes in Victoria Street, which is always decked out in

blue & white ahead of the big game.

“They have the programmes printed before the semi-final has finished,”

Atkins says. “It will be printed Jersey v Guernsey before the game is played.

One year we’ll really upset them. It will just be lovely.”

Darlaston Town 1874 1

Ricketts 31

AFC Bridgnorth 2

Heath 61, Pike 74

Darlaston's poor run of form and results continues as they fell to a

home defeat at the hands of Shropshire based Bridgnorth,

The home side had the better of the early exchanges with Isaac

Cooper bringing two early saves from visiting keeper Chris Crook.

Bridgnorth's 19 goal striker Anwar Olugbon was proving a thorn in

the side of the Darlaston defence holding the ball up well,

unfortunately his fellow strikers were not as potent, and few

opportunities were created until Ologbon had an unopposed

header easily saved by Connor Hopkins. The same combination

was again in action on 25 minutes Hopkins bringing off a

fine one-handed diving save from an Olugbon drive.

20

Darlaston had the

edge in the opening

30 minutes and

eventually took the

lead on 32 minutes.

An Isaac Cooper

right wing cross

found Ricardo

Ricketts 8 yards out

and the central

defender found

himself a little space

to shoot home for

his second goal of

the season. Cooper

had two half chances as the half time interval approached, one

saved by Crook and the other going over the bar.

The opening 15 minutes of the second half saw Darlaston fail to

assert their early authority. Dan Cresswell shot high over the bar

from a 20-yard free kick and on 48 minutes Darlaston failed to

double their lead from a great opportunity. A driving run by

Cooper down the left wing saw him drive a low cross across the

face of goal finding Leon Taylor unmarked at the far post.

Unfortunately for the home side Taylor got no power behind his

shot and keeper Crook scrambled across his goal to save on the

goal line.

Bridgnorth responded, Jack Tonks forcing Hopkins into a good

save. Cooper

and Reis Nadat

both had efforts

blocked before

the impressive

Olugbon shot

wide from close

range following a

Will Reid corner.

On the hour

mark desperate

defending by

Bridgnorth

assisted by poor

finishing

on their 21

goal line again

thwarted Taylor

from 2 yards out

after being set

up by Cooper.

Two glorious

chances for the

home side in the

opening 15

minutes of the

second half were

missed a minute

later they were

paid to rue the

chances as

Bridgnorth

equalised with a superb move which was completely out of

context with the rest of the game.

Dominic Heath and Olugbon interchanged passes on the right, a

sublime piece of skill by Olugbon saw his back heeled flick deceive

the home defence as Heath burst into the box with a looping 15

yard shot into the far corner leaving Hopkins stranded.

The goal gave Bridgnorth confidence and the quality of their play

improved, Philip Groves and Scott Becker shooting over the bar.

The winning goal came on 74 minutes from the penalty spot. Sam

Causton bringing down Will Reid after Bridgnorth’s defender broke

into the area. Jason Pike converting the penalty with ease.

The final quarter

saw Darlaston huff

and puff in search

of the equaliser

Zico Agyemang

coming closest but

the Bridgnorth

defence superbly

marshalled by

Matt Dean enabled

the visitors to see

the game out

comfortably.

A BRIEF

HISTORY

Formed in 1961 as Wednesfield Social Club, the club began playing

in the Wolverhampton and District Amateur League where quick

progression to the Premier Division brought four Championships

and three League Cup wins. In 1976 the club joined the West

Midlands League First Division winning it in the first season and

runners up the next delivering promotion to the Premier Division.

A high point in the club’s history came in 1985 in the Birmingham

Senior Cup, winning away at West Bromwich Albion 1-5 before

losing the final 2-0 to Aston Villa at Villa Park. Floodlights were

added to the Cottage Ground in 1990 and with back to back

Premier Division titles in1995/96 and 1996/97 the club gained

promotion to the Midlands Alliance League.

The 2001/02 season saw a healthy third place finish and a fine run

in the Birmingham Senior Cup beating Birmingham City before

losing 0-1 to West Bromwich Albion in the semi-final. The

following 2002/03 season ended in relegation back into the

Premier Division of the West Midlands (Regional) League.

After four years consolidation on and off the field, in mid-season

2006/07 a fresh management team was appointed pulling the club

clear of relegation to a creditable thirteenth place finish. In the

2007/08 season under the same management team saw the club

finish fourth in the league, runners up in the league cup and win the

J.W. Hunt Cup beating A FC Wulfrunians.3-2 in the final at Molineux.

A new management duo of Robert Morris and Paul Sullivan sees in

the 2010/11 season with a top five finish in the West

Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division along with

24

good runs in both the F.A. Cup and the F.A. Vase. The following

season saw the club finish in the top six and reach the Premier

Division League Cup Final again with a youthful attacking team.

Season 2014/15 saw the team hit an all-time low with relegation to

Division One.

2015/16 saw the appointment of Dean Gill as manager following

10 years working for the club at youth level, Dean wanted to

change the club’s ethos and philosophy from top to bottom by

giving local young talent a platform to succeed. This proved very

successful as the 2016/17 season produced a change in fortune for

the club having good cup runs and winning two The Division One

League Cup and Birmingham County FA Vase but losing the JW

Hunt Cup Final to Alvechurch at the Molineux. One of our players

then made the move to Alvechurch for the following season

showing that players can progress through the ranks of the lower

league teams. The team also won promotion by coming runners up

in Division One.

Following promotion in the 2017/18 season Wednesfield held their

own against some strong teams, playing good football. This allowed

the club to finish in a creditable 5th position. Dean Gill and his

management team decided they wanted to go to pastures new and

left the club again in turmoil by taking all of the players with them

to another West Midlands (Regional) League club.

The club recruited Andrew Carrier and Danny Carter as joint

managers who took the club to a top six finish allowing the club to

enter FA Cup and the F A Vase.

Once again, the club were faced with recruiting a new management

team, this after Carrier and Carter left for Shifnal Town, once again

taking the majority of the Wednesfield squad with them.

In the close season the club appointed the management team of

John Griffiths & Dan Watkiss, to move the club forward in this

coming season

Around the League

In form Wolverhampton Casuals moved into third spot with a 3-0

win at AFC Bridgnorth. Vidal Hendrickson gave them a 29th

minute lead and two late goals from new signings Matt Pinder and

Emils Fedotovs secured the points. The win means that Cassies

have taken 13 points from their last 15 scoring 18 goals and

conceding none in the process. Cassies have the best defensive

record of any club in the Country conceding just 4 goals in 17

league games.

Division leaders Shifnal Town maintained their 6 point cushion at

the top of the table with a 3-0 home win against Bilston Town.

After hauling themselves off the bottom with a home win against

Shawbury United last weekend Cradley Town could not repeat

that performance and fell to defeat 5-3 at Worcester Raiders in

their first WMRL Premier Division game at Claines Lane this

season. Kyle Belmonte and Zaqib Hussain helped themselves to a

brace apiece with Ryan Rowe also on target.

Brogan Halpin gave Littleton a first half lead at Wolverhampton

Sporting. Jourdain Mason added a second in the second half to

give the visitors all three points.

Pershore Town edged out Wem Town by the odd goal in a 5-goal

thriller at The Butlers Sports Centre.

Smethwick Rangers and Dudley Town were both without a game.

The top two sides in Division One met at The Wickes Stadium as

Wellington Amateurs and Droitwich Spa shared the spoils. In a

see-saw battle Connor Collins, Alex Dugmore and Cory Rudd were

on target for Spa with Matt Elsmore and a Marc Perry brace

evening thing up for the home side.

28

Third placed Allscott Heath lost ground on the top two in a 2-0

home defeat against Tipton Town after Allscott were reduced to

10 men in the first half. Conner Scott gave Tipton the lead before

a second goal in the dying seconds courtesy of Jay Rossiter

secured the points.

Old Wulfs missed the chance to go top falling to a 3 -0 defeat at

home to Wrens Nest. Despite having substitute Jamie Hunt sent

off on 69 minutes 10 man “Wrenna” took the points with 3 goals

in the final 13 minutes. Nathan Guest opened the scoring on 77

minutes with Arnold Chaponda helping himself to a brace in the

final 8 minutes. The win puts “Wrenna” on the fringes of the

promotion places in fourth spot.

Sikh Hunters hauled themselves off the bottom of the table with a

4-1 win at fellow strugglers Gornal Athletic. They were replaced at

the foot of the table by Bustlehome who fell to a 4-0 home defeat

at the hands of Bromyard Town.

Team Dudley were the big winners of the day trouncing Willenhall

Town 6-0 on the 3G. Jack Bailey opened the scoring from the

penalty spot, Dan Hadley netted a second before further first half

goals from Bailey and Garrick Chaney virtually secured the points

before half time. Bailey completed his hat trick in the second half

with another penalty and Chaney netted the sixth to round off an

emphatic win.

FC Darlaston and Gornal Colts drew 1-1 at Queen Street.

In Division Two second placed Coven Athletic fell to a surprise 7-2

defeat at Ludlow. Owen Holdsworth, Dan Griffiths and Ryan Lewis

all helped themselves to a brace with Reece Williams also on

target for Ludlow. Paul Blagrove and Michael Davies with

consolation goals for Athletic. Third placed Church Stretton were

easy 4-0 winners in the Shropshire derby against Telford Juniors,

Sean and Aaron Gough, Dean Richards and Jack Davis the
