News & Views

from the

Boardroom

Today we welcome to the Paycare Ground the players, management,

officials and supporters of AFC Bridgnorth. Win lose or draw the

players, management and officials will be most welcome to join us for

post match hospitality.

New Years Eve at the club was a sell out and a sensational night was

had by all. Events such as these are a significant part of our

fundraising activities which help the club to survive and thrive.

Massive respect and thanks to everyone who organised the evening

and helped out on the night. On a similar theme the club has

organised tribute acts every month. Please take a moment to have a

look as there is something for everyone. Full details are available from

Garry Hale and are featured on our social media.

On the field we have not made a great start to 2020. After a good

draw against Wolverhampton Sporting the difference in quality

between Coleshill Town a Step 4 club in the JW Hunt Cup game was

clearly evident. So it should be when looking at the vast difference in

playing budgets. I think we should just put the Bilston game behind

us – that was not a Darlaston performance and I know Andy, the

management team and the players were devastated. Letʼs hope that

we put in a much better performance today.

I am sorry to say that some 4 months after making the

3

6

application we have still not heard the result of our planning application

for new security fencing and new grandstands.

Finally as a result of us changing our Accounting date the AGM will be

held much earlier than usual this year. The Committee and Directors

have agreed that the AGM will be held in the clubhouse on Wednesday

5 February starting at 7.30pm. It would be great to see many of you

there. The AGM is open to everyone and likely to last no more than one

hour.

Enjoy todayʼs game

View from the Dugout

Good afternoon and welcome back to

the Paycare Ground, it’s been three

games since my last programme notes,

in that time our form has dipped

significantly. In the last six games we

have dropped from fourth to seventh

after a season high of third at

Christmas, our last six games have seen

four losses, a win and a draw.

This is something we have not been

used too in recent times. Over the last

few weeks some of the squad have left

and we have also moved some players

on, therefore over the coming weeks we

will be looking to add new faces to the

squad to add more quality & depth to

the squad.

I would now firstly like to welcome AFC

Bridgnorth for today’s game, which is going to be another tough affair. When

we travelled to Bridgnorth at the end of September on a good run, a poor

performance saw us lose 2-1. AFC are well organised and drilled side, so we

will have to be at our best to get the three points on offer today.

The last three games have been very different for several reasons, from level

of opposition to our own performances. The last home game against

Wolverhampton Sporting Community must have been a great game to watch

as a spectator, it was certainly end to end. I was pleased with the desire and

confidence the players displayed. After conceding three goals just after halftime

putting us 3-1 down with 20 minutes left it looked like the game had

been lost. But again, we showed character and a back bone in pulling the

game back to 3-3. It was pleasing, and I thought we had turned the corner.

We then travelled away to Coleshill Town 48 hours after the Wolves Sporting

game on a Monday evening. Coleshill play at step 4 in the football

pyramid in the BetVictor Southern League Division One Central (the 7

8

old Evo-Stick League). I have not seen the ball played with such pace and

precision for many years, it was an absolute joy to see. This is one of the plus

points on playing on an artificial surface regularly, but in saying that the trade

off is injuries to hips, knees and ankles. After our hosts played us off the park

in the first half, their movement and willingness to work for each other, on

and off the ball was impressive certainly a sharp learning curve going in at

half time 4-0 down. It looked like they were going to knock up a cricket

score. But during the interval we made some tactical changes along with

showing some resilience, patience in possession and trust in each other,

enabled us to start to penetrate the Coleshill back line. We should have

scored 2 or 3 goals as we created some great chances, but we couldn't find

the net. Losing the game 6-0 was tough but lots of lessons were learnt on

the night and I was pleased with some individual performances.

Last week’s derby game at Bilston Town produced one of the real lows since I

came to the club. Having played for Darlaston as a youth and adult player, I

totally understand how important the Bilston fixture is. It was the first fixture I

looked for when the seasons fixtures were published. Everyone that witnessed

the first half, as both teams left the field at 1-1 would say there was nothing

in the game. In the second half the Ryan Jones sending off cost us dearly. But

thats no excuse for the second half performance, to concede six goals in the

manner we did is not acceptable. No player means to or sets out to make an

error in judgement or a mistake, but we fell apart and left ourselves open

time and time again mistake after mistake and we were quite rightly punished

by a very good pair of strikers

As manager, I take full responsibility for last weekend’s result. I know the lads

are still hurting and are eager to put it right, we win, draw & lose together.

The lads are hardworking and honest, sometimes in football just like in life

you hit hard times we are going through a sticky patch, but we will come

through it and improve I'm damn sure of that.

The management team and I have also sat down and highlighted things we

need to improve on and personnel we need to bring in to help us improve

and kick on.

Rest assured we will keep working hard, I hope you all enjoy today’s game

and lets hope we are celebrating a win in the bar after the game.

Bilston Town 6

Garmson 14, 46, 50, 58 Nickle 64, 84, 90+3

Darlaston Town 1874 2

Holder 33 Hough 54

These two former giants of West Midlands League football met for the

first time at Queen Street since 2006/07 in a league fixture. Bilston

avenged their 3-0 defeat earlier this season at the Paycare Ground

with a scintillating second half performance against 10-man

Darlaston.

Prolific striker Adam Garmson gave the home side the lead on 14

minutes following some excellent approach work by Jordan Smith

Williams. Four minutes later Bilston keeper Zack Stretton was called

into action bringing off a superb one handed save diving high to his

right to claw away an Isaac Cooper header.

10

Bilston were

having the

better of the

exchanges,

but it was

Darlaston

who struck

with the

equaliser on

33 minutes.

Aiden

Blackham

was fouled

by Elliott

Hartley 22

yards out.

Midfielder

Jamie Holder

curled in a superb free kick into the top corner giving Stretton no

chance. Instead of celebrating the goal even before the restart

Darlaston were reduced to 10 men. Ryan Jones picking up his second

yellow card for an off the ball incident with Garmson.

The second half was a different affair with Bilston running riot scoring

six goals. Within 5 minutes of the restart Bilston scored two goals.

Garmson was set up by substitute Kevin Nickle on 46 minutes to

drive home beyond keeper Liam Whittaker. Garmson completed his

hat trick less than 5 minutes later a cross field ball by Cooper struck

one of his own

players and fell

into the path of

Garmson some

30 yards out,

Garmson made

progress

unimpeded and

easily beat

Whittaker to

put the

Steelmen in

control.

Darlaston gave

themselves a

lifeline on 54

11

minutes, Lucas Hough twisting in the penalty area to hook the ball

home from 8 yards after Bilston had failed to clear a corner.

Despite this lifeline, Darlaston continued to shoot themselves in the

foot with defensive error after defensive error. Bilston were now

playing neat attractive football with pace and quality as Darlaston

had no answer to the attacking play of Garmson and Nickle.

It was the Nickle and Garmson combination on 58 minutes which saw

Bilston double their lead. Garmson netting his fourth goal after being

played through by Nickle. Garmson and Nickle both missed difficult

chances before Darlaston's Ezekiel Agyemang had a goal bound effort

cleared off the line by Jamie Elkes. From the goal line clearance

Bilston broke at pace through the heart of the visitors midfield and

defence and within 20 seconds to put the game beyond doubt. The

Garmson and Nickle combination again the destroyers in chief, this

time Garmson the provider and Nickle the goal scorer.

Although not affecting the result an incredulous decision by the

referee denied Darlaston the most obvious of penalties. Leon Taylor

less than 2 yards out and just about to put the ball in the net was

bundled over by a Bilston defender.

Two further goals in the final six minutes saw Nickle

complete his hat trick and seal a resounding win. 12

The managers probably won’t thank us for saying it but it’s always great to see

Non-League talent move up into the Football League.

We’ve seen a host of players make the step up just in this past week – all with

their own stories to tell.

Halesowen based Josh March has worked his way up the divisions with

Alvechurch and, after hitting 24 goals in 27 games for Leamington, is moving

up to League Two with Forest Green. March told us in last week’s paper of how

Non-League football has prepared him for the step-up – one he wasn’t ever sure

he’d get a crack at a few years ago.

Reeco Hackett-Fairchild quickly made an impression with Bromley during this

campaign and he’s been snapped up by Portsmouth.

Then Barnet’s Jack Taylor is stepping up to Peterborough United – a club well

known for mining Non-League over the years with great success – for a fee of

£500,000 which could rise to £1 million with add-ons.

Our columnist and BT Sport commentator Adam Virgo recently wrote that Taylor

is the best midfielder in the National League. Perhaps Posh were reading!

The moves didn’t stop there with Rob Atkinson joining Oxford United from

Eastleigh. The young defender has impressed for the Spitfires this season having

joined in the summer from Basingstoke Town. It just goes to show how much

talent there is throughout Non-League football.

Of course, for the managers it’s not great timing. They’ve lost important players

at an important part of the season. It’s not as straightforward as just going out

and handpicking a replacement.

It does, however, reflect well on them and their clubs. Non-League football

thrives and survives on giving young footballers the opportunity to showcase

their talent and the platform to push onto the League.

Are there more footballers just waiting for their chance? You can be sure of it.

Coleshill Town 6

Sandhu 1, Mannion 7, 55 Panzo-Antonio 23, 42

Washbourne 90+2

Darlaston Town 1874 0

BetVictor Southern League Division One Coleshill Town

demonstrated their class against their lower league opponents and

settled this J W Hunt Cup tie bursting into a 3 goal lead in the

opening 23 minutes.

Before Darlaston could settle into any rhythm left back Amarvir

Sandhu gave the home side a 7th minute lead. Edilson Panzo-

Antonio picked him out with a sublime pass over the top of the

Darlaston defence and Sandhu's 18-yard curling shot gave keeper

Liam Whittaker no chance.

Darlaston responded with Jamie Holder shooting over the bar and

on 14 minutes Aiden Blackham forced the home keeper into a fine

save.

However, Coleshill were in control and midfielder George

Washbourne was instrumental in virtually everything they 14

did. Coleshill

doubled their lead

on 17 minutes

Ethan Mannion on

target with a goal

of the highest

quality. Leon

Taylor had a rare

chance for the

visitors but failed

to connect cleanly

at the back post

and the home

keeper again made

a good save.

Mannion headed over before Coleshill effectively settled the tie on

23 minutes with their third goal, this time it was Edilson Panzo-

Antonio with another superb finish after being set up by Mannion.

On 42 minutes Panzo-Antoni scored the goal of the game finding

himself space on the right he cut in from the by-line beat two

defenders and unleashed a vicious rising shot from an acute angle

again giving Whittaker no chance.

The second half was pretty much the same as the first with

Coleshill in control and Darlaston restricted to rare breaks. On 55

minutes Liam Smith was adjudged to have brought down Panzo-

Antonio in the penalty area, Mannion stepping up to convert the

spot kick for his second goal of the game.

Darlaston keeper Whitaker was kept busy producing several

outstanding saves to keep the score down. Darlaston hit the bar

twice with a Liam

Smith header and a

powerful drive from

Romano Graham but

these were brief and

rare raids on the

Coleshill goal.

The scoring was

completed deep into

injury

time

Washbourne getting

the goal his

outstanding overall

play deserved.

Darlaston Town 1874 3

Smith 18, Taylor 65, Agyemang 87

Wolves Sporting Community 3

Sibanda 52 pen, Ward 56, Hough og 63

A crowd of 178 were treated to a scintillating end to end game at The

Paycare Ground where Darlaston took a first half lead and then came

back from 3-1 down to earn a well-deserved point.

In a bizarre goalmouth scramble in the 8th minute both Zico

Agyemang and Leon Taylor somehow conjured to miss close range

chances as Sporting defenders Josh Small and Joe Clarke both

managed to keep their goal intact.

Emile Beckford shot wide for Sporting on 14 minutes before Sporting

keeper Callum Smith saved well from an Agyemang header. Darlaston

took the lead on 18 minutes, central defender Liam Smith

20

netting his first goal

of the season with a

back header from an

Isaac Cooper long

throw.

Agyemang was sent

clear of the Sporting

defence and with the

goal at his mercy the

striker failed to

convert the chance,

Smith racing from his

line to deny the

striker as Agyemang

shot, Smith saved

with his legs. For Sporting Campbell Justice brought a save from

home keeper Connor Hopkins before Jayden Ward shot over the bar.

With Darlaston temporarily reduced to 10 men as Aiden Blackham

spent 10 minutes in the sin bin for dissent, Sporting had half chances

through Beckford who forced Hopkins in to a parried save into the

path of Attoumani but his goal bound effort was blocked by a Lucas

Hough clearance.

Taylor had a chance

to double the home

side's lead on 35

minutes, but he

could not direct his

header on target

following a Cooper

corner. Sporting

started the second

half in fine fashion.

Kayden Ward had

been quiet for most

of the first half but

for the first 20

minutes of the

second half the

young winger was superb as he caused havoc in the home defence.

On 46 minutes he brought a good save from Hopkins and then played

a major role in the equaliser on 51 minutes.

Ward broke into the penalty area and was adjudged to have been

impeded by Luke Wilson. The resultant penalty was easily

21

converted by Soms Sibanda. Ward was again at the heart of another

Sporting attack

in the 56th

minute to put the

visitors ahead.

Darlaston failed

on 3 occasions to

clear as Ward

pounced on a

poor clearance to

drive the ball

beyond Hopkins.

Darlaston were

rocked by the

two early second

half goals and

were a little

disjointed as

Sporting were on top. Sporting added a third on 63 minutes a poor

cross by Campbell was deflected into his own net by the head of

Lucas Hough flat footing Hopkins giving the keeper no chance.

Despite these setbacks, Darlaston's fighting spirit came to the fore

and they deservedly got back into the game on 65 minutes. Taylor

had been a thorn in the side of the Sporting defence all afternoon

and was unceremoniously dumped to the floor from behind by Clarke

22 yards out. Cooper's free kick was headed home by Taylor from 6

yards.

The goal gave

Darlaston added

impetus and they

were now in the

ascendancy. On

72 minutes

Agyemang again

broke through

the heart of the

defence but for

the second time

in a one on one

situation with

keeper Smith,

the keeper came

out on

22

top as Agyemang shot tamely at Smith who made a comfortable

save.

Smith was again in action on 74 minutes saving a snapshot from

Agyemang. Beckford could've sealed the game for Sporting on 85

minutes but shot wide from 16 yards.

The large crowd were treated to a wonder save on 86 minutes which

denied the home side the equaliser. Substitute Roman Graham rose

majestically at the back post sending his header into the opposite

corner, somehow keeper Smith twisted in mid-air and at full stretch

managed to get his fingertips to the ball, diverting it onto the cross

bar and eventually to safety. Without question the best save by an

opposition keeper seen at The Paycare Ground in 4 years.

However, Darlaston were not to be denied and their tremendous

work rate and response to falling two goals behind was rewarded a

minute later when they drew level. Substitute Tyrone Clarke

O'Connell floated a left-wing cross to the back post, Hough headed

the ball back into the danger zone and Agyemang finally got his

deserved goal as he was first to respond shooting home from 6

yards.

Overall a draw was a fair result as both teams gave their all in this

pulsating encounter.

A BRIEF

HISTORY

AFC Bridgnorth are the reformed phoenix club of the old Bridgnorth Town FC. Starting

from scratch in West Midlands (Regional) League Division One at the beginning of the

2013/14 season. The players showed great loyalty to manager Mark Clyde as 90% of

them stuck by him when they had options to move on to other clubs. The club had a

rewarding first season winning Division One and narrowly lost in the Shropshire TJ

Vickers Cup final against Ellesmere Rangers. Also, Clyde’s men made the semi-final of

the J W Hunt cup.

In the following season the success continued as AFC Bridgnorth finished runners up in

the West Midlands Regional League Premier Division to a very strong Sporting Khalsa

who won the league by 27 points. At the end of the following 2015/16 season the

club finished runners up again this time by a single point to Shawbury United. The club

reached the final of the Shropshire County Cup and held Evo-Stick side Market Drayton

for 120 minutes only to lose on penalties.

After 5 years manager Mark Clyde returned to Northern Ireland in 2016 for family

reasons and AFC Bridgnorth appointed the experienced manager John Psara as his

replacement. His tenure was short, he resigned as manager in early October after being

in charge for only 4 months stating “a difference of opinion with the board” as his

reason for leaving. Jason Pike and Steve Broome were appointed and guided the side

to a credible 8th placed finish.

After a run of defeats at the start of the 2017/18 season Pike and Broome stepped

down from the management role and former player and manager Steve Frisby took the

reins with his assistant ex-Market Drayton skipper Paul McCullen.

The shock resignation of Frisby and McCullen after eight games in charge saw Kev

Heseltine return to the manager’s role in his second stint as Bridgnorth manager.

Heseltine saw the side to safety on the last game of the season but decided to resign

leaving the club to recruit another management team the fifth in two seasons.

The club appointed Adrian Stanton as manager with ex player Dominic Heath coming in

as his assistant. Stanton and Heath resigned from their positions with 10 games

remaining in the 2018/19 season. The board appointed Steve Groome, Jason Pike, Kris

Wood and Dean Yates to work as a management team to see out the remainder of the

season. The end of that season saw the caretaker management team bring the first

silverware to club since reforming after they beat West Midlands (Regional) League

Premier Division winners Haughmond in the final of the

T.J. Vickers Shropshire County Cup.

postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

28

In Division One the top two teams both recorded 4-0 home wins.

Leaders Droitwich Spa ran out comfortable winners at home to

Willenhall Town. Goals from Connor Collins and Jack Davies gave

Spa a 2 goal interval lead. Collins completed his hat trick with

two second half goals.

Second placed Old Wulfrunians recorded the same scoreline at

Brinsford Lane where Tipton Town were the visitors. After a

goalless first half Old Wulfs ran riot with four second half goals.

Within 17 minutes of the restart Wulfs had put the game to bed

with 4 goals, a brace from Tom Ray and a Tony Agnello goal

putting them in command before Louis Harper completed the

scoring.

Allscott kept themselves in the promotion race with a 4-1 win

against fellow promotion contenders Gornal Colts. Dan Blackwell

gave Allscott a 2 goal interval lead, Josh Thomas and Leigh

Brindley goals putting Allscott in a commanding position. Jack

Lewis netted a last minute consolation for Colts.

Wellington Amateurs also remain in contention but lost ground on

the leaders in a 2-2 home draw against Team Dudley. Jake Jones

and Marc Perry were on target for Ams with Alex Pinches and

Barry Mohamadhou on the scoresheet for the students.

In the only other league game the Bustleholme and Wyrley game

finished goalless. Bromyard’s game against Gornal Athletic fell

foul of the weather.

In the Smedley Crooke Cup FC Darlaston progressed at the

expense of Midland League side Droitwich Spa Under 21s. Adrian

Jones (twice) and Kieran Payne were on target in a 3-3 draw

before the tie was settled by penalties.

In Division Two AFC Bentley opened up an 11 point lead trouncing

bottom club AFC Bridgnorth Development 10-0. Another hat trick

from Liam Hughes accompanied by a brace apiece from Ryan

Bradshaw and Dave Meese with Nick Turton, Ash Jackson and

Ryan Mason also on target.

The Warstones Wanderers game against Coven Athletic was

postponed as Coven could not raise a side.
