Holden loss a ‘shock’ for Blackwells dealership

The city’s biggest Holden dealer
is bracing itself for life without
the brand after general Motors
announced it will no longer be making
vehicles suitable for new Zealand roads.
Last week the United States based
manufacturer said it would stop
producing right-hand drive vehicles at
the end of the year. Blackwells chief
executive Steve grenfell was “absolutely
shocked” by the announcement.
Blackwells has been operating since
1923.
“it will certainly have an impact, we
have a long established history with
the brand, which dates back to when
Blackwells formed. today, it is a large
chunk of our business, a third of our
business,” he said.
“Servicing and parts for Holdens will
continue for the next 10 years or so.
really the only loss we are talking about
is the sales element of the Holden brand
and that is something we will have to
address going forward.”
Mr grenfell said the brand would be
sorely missed by his customers. “it is an
iconic brand with great loyalty along
with a lot of avid customers.
“i can think of one customer who is
probably up to their 20th Holden.”
Holden Enthusiasts club christchurch
president allan White said he was sad to
see the brand go. “it is only a car brand
at the end of the day, but it is an iconic
brand that australia and new Zealand
have known very, very well,” he said.

Eddie Fairbairn built a side-valve 32
Ford roadster in the 1960s. it was
the beginning of a lifetime interest
in V8s. in 1966, he put together a front
engine, side-valve dragster which
contained his own four carburettor alloy
intakes and owner made pistons. Just
two years later, he purchased a ‘pink
panther’ Ford roadster which earned
the title of new Zealand’s top show car.
Fast forward to 1991, and Eddie
achieved over 200mph across the
quarter mile track in just 6½ seconds
while drag racing; a feat he attained six
times. By 1995, Eddie was circuit racing
his 1995 camaro in the transam class.
Eddie’s passion for hot rods and muscle
cars grew into a business and 35 years
ago he began sourcing and supplying

Toyota Corolla wagon
’m a big fan of station wagons, especially
those that are small in stature.
IHowever, it’s part of the new car market
in New Zealand that has shrunk to almost
nothing thanks to the demand for sport
utility vehicles. Sure, Ford has a Focus
wagon, Hyundai has an i30 wagon, and
there’s a smattering of continental models
– Skoda’s Octavia Scout and BMW’s Active
Tourer. As an aside, Holden has an Astra
wagon here, but it is due to be discontinued.
However, you can count on Toyota to keep
the market ticking over with steady sales,
its Corolla wagon has served the company
well and it captures my attention, it’s a car I
could certainly live with, I don’t need a sport
utility vehicle, but I do like a car that offers
load space greater than a standard boot.
The entire Corolla range has just had a bit
of a refresh and a new generation wagon
has been added, it’s the first in the latest
Corolla series and has been built with all the
traditional Corolla values, it is state-of-theart
underneath and it looks fabulous.
The only real difference between the hatch/
sedan variants is that the wagon doesn’t
get the 2-litre engine, nor is it available as
a hybrid. The wagon gets a 1.8-litre engine,
but that matters little, and if you take into
account that the engine is larger than the
previous model (1.5-litre), the ingredients
are in place for capable, practical motoring.
The evaluation car was carrying additional
Toyota Racing Development parts, a
body kit, black wheels, and with TRD
appointments it looked great and certainly
generated a lot of interest during the week
it was in my care.
Otherwise, the wagon is available in
only one specification at $29,990. Unlike
previous generation models, there is
no manual gearbox option, it arrives
with continuously variable automatic
transmission only. I believe that is valuepacked
buying considering you’ve got that
healthy cargo load section – 392-litres up to
800-litres with the rear seats folded flat.
For that money it also gets a suite of
Toyota Sense safety technologies, easily
earning it a five-star Australasian New Car
Assessment Program safety rating. Items
fitted for comfort and convenience are
generous given its budget price.
Powering the Corolla wagon is a fourcylinder
engine of 1798cc. Toyota rates
it with 104kW and 171Nm, available
collectively at 6100rpm and 3900rpm.
If these figures look familiar, they are much
the same as those from Corollas of previous
eras. They are healthy outputs and more
than capable of fulfilling the wagon’s role,
especially if you take into account that at
around 1300kg the Corolla in this form isn’t
overweight, even with its 425kg payload
rating.
On the subject of figures, the Corolla
wagon returns hugely respectable fuel
usage statistics, Toyota lists a combined
cycle rating of 6.8-litres per 100km. Toyota
also claims a 10sec standstill to 100km/h
acceleration time.
Drive is fluid through the transmission,
that’s the beauty of CVT, it harnesses
engine strength without feel and gets about
hauling in acceleration seamlessly. There
is a sequential shift system which will lock
the gearing into any of seven pre-set steps,
and that has advantages when travelling
through hilly sections or when slowing for
corners.
At highway speed the wagon moves
through the air quietly and those on board
have the benefit of high comfort levels.
The seats have solid all round support with
cushions that are absorbent, yet containing.
When presented with a quick corner or two,
its handling manners are predictable with
the essential information projected back
through to the steering wheel.
Previous versions of the Corolla wagon
were sprung soft for the Japanese domestic
market. I’m pleased to report Toyota New
Zealand has addressed the suspension
settings over the years and the dampers
are now set to more of a medium setting
through a sophisticated fully independent

This is important for those who will fill the
cargo section, the rear of the wagon feels
taut and securely fastened to the road. I’m a
big believer in independent suspension, and
full marks to Toyota for building the wagon
around such a complex set-up.
Without the TRD wheels the Corolla wagon
rides on 15in rubber. However, grip on the
TRD-spec model is enhanced greatly with
sport specification 17in Michelin tyres
(225/50), they have a strong tenure with
the road surface.
The wagon has certainly developed the
handling characteristics of its hatchback
and sedan stablemates, it’s a car you
can feel very much at one with and can
rest assured it’s not going to present any
surprises, it is competent and involving
to be in, the driver is sent all the right
messages.
I applaud Toyota, both in Japan and here.
I’m pleased the wagon is still available, it’s
a no-nonsense practical vehicle. It won’t
set any records nor thrill enormously with
its power, but for $30k and low ongoing
running costs, it is value and you can
guarantee that it will do its job for decades
to come.
