For long years Elizabeth bore the shame of a barren womb, until she
bore her son called John, who became the last and greatest of the
prophets; and when the Christ whom they had foretold set foot in the
waters of Jordan, it was John who laid his hand upon him and showed
him to the world; and John himself was thereby declared to be the
prophet, the herald, and the forerunner of the Word of God. Amen.
