THIS MAY NOT
WORK IF YOU
WANT TO BE
SURPRISED, BUT
IF YOU AND
YOUR PARTNER
ARE SHOPPING
FOR RINGS
TOGETHER,
SOMETIMES YOU
CAN SCORE A
DEAL IF YOU
BUY THE
ENGAGEMENT
RING AND
WEDDING RING
AT THE
SAME TIME.
OPT FOR A SHALLOW CUT
If having a center stone that looks large is
more important to you than one with lots
of sparkle or a perfect cut grade, choosing
specific shallow-cut fancy shapes, like
marquise and emerald diamonds, will
create the illusion of a larger rock—without
the hefty price tag. “These fancy shapes
often appear bigger than other diamond shapes, like round or
cushion, of equal carat weight,” Gerstein says. “This is because
the elongated shape of these stones maximizes surface area,
resulting in a larger appearance.” While opting for a shallower
cut diamond does mean some light will “leak out” of the sides
of the stone, reducing its overall brilliance, you’ll still get a
beautiful-looking stone for a much lower price tag.
SHOP WITH YOUR BAND IN MIND
Adding even a thin diamond half band or eternity band to your
stack will create megawatt shine—for a fraction of the cost
of a blinged-out engagement ring. “We love the idea of mixing
a simple solitaire engagement ring with a diamond-accented
wedding band,” Gerstein says. “This allows you to save on the
engagement ring while adding all the sparkle you need.”
Another thought: This may not work if you want your proposal
to be a surprise, but if you and your partner are going to shop
for rings together, sometimes you can score a deal if you buy
the engagement ring and wedding ring at the same time. You
might even be able to get your SO’s wedding ring as well for—
you guessed it—an even bigger discount. ››
