MARCH 2020 11
Passports … and privacy on Facebook
Dear Readers
Passport renewals used to be incredibly time consuming. However, I recently had need
to renew the twins’ passports as their first ones were running out. Although extremely
expensive compared to other EU and non-EU countries, (Bulgaria for example is around
25 GBP for an adult passport), I found the process this time very easy. It can all be done
online and even the signature part has changed. Now the recognised person who
countersigns receives an email and low and behold four weeks later two passports
arrive!
Although a lot of emphasis is placed on privacy and security I don’t know if this can be
said for Facebook. If you have a Facebook account how much information are they
holding on you? I went to check my Comments and my Liked pages right the way back to
2009 when I opened my account and was surprised at how much information was still
there.
Interestingly, one of the sections is Apps. You may not know this but the games you
might play, or random quizzes you might see all track your information and are
authorised by you but normally in a way you don’t realise. Who really reads the small
print when agreeing to use an App? I generally don't use Apps on Facebook as I only
want to see information from people I am friends with and pages I follow. One section
everyone should look at is “Your Ad preferences”. Despite deleting hundreds of things
from this section, Facebook seems to add them quicker than I can compensate for. But
further down you will find information on you. Entitled “Your Information” you can choose
what is shown and what is hidden. I have disabled as much as possible because I simply
don’t want Ads. It is a tool to use and adapt as you want, and don't be afraid of cutting
people off. I have 119 friends on my list and personally know each and every one of
them. I only share to my friends and never share to friends of friends. Why? If I don't
know you, you don't need to see or know about me, my wife, my family, where we are,
when we are out and what we are doing. That is my private life. I am convinced most
people in this day and age have forgotten privacy and how important it is to protect
ourselves. I could go on and on about privacy and Facebook in particular, but the subject
would quickly become boring and I am almost out of space.
As always, if you have any queries or questions, please do get in touch with me, that’s
Andy, at ICT@lyntonadvertiser.com
Staff Training Closing Information The surgery will be CLOSED from 12.30 on Thursday 19 th March for
Message from the Lynton Minor Injury and Nursing Service As of 1 st Feb 2020, we have returned to our
full 7 day a week service at Lyn Health. We still do not have a full quota of Minor Injury trained staff but
our situation has improved a bit and we are waiting for completion of training to get us up to 4 Nurses
who are able to cover the weekends. Between November and February there were only 2 nurses! We
are now back to seeing clinic patients and minor injury patients on a Sunday as well as a Saturday,
between 11am and 4pm. We are able to deal with minor wounds and burns/scalds, sprains strains and
bites and stings. For anything more serious, if you think you have a broken bone, have chest pain or
other serious symptoms, please do call 999 in an emergency or 111 if you need a Doctor. There are no
Doctors here at the weekend.
Vaccinations While Amy is on maternity leave we only have Alison who is qualified to administer baby
and travel vaccinations. This does mean there are restrictions on the availability of clinics as Alison has
to juggle with her other roles. It would be greatly appreciated if you can think ahead and book early for
appointments, and do let us know if you cannot attend so we can release the appointment
for someone else.
Regarding travel vaccinations – a reminder that we are not a travel clinic and you do need to follow the
advice in the Practice leaflet to find out which vaccines are recommended for your destination, not to
mention all the other advice regarding food/water/malaria which will ensure your safety while you are
away. We only administer the 3 NHS vaccines: Hepatitis A, Tetanus and Typhoid and there may be
others you need, depending on your immunisation status. It can all get very complicated and it is
advisable to think about vaccination and health advice at the time of booking your holiday – not 2
weeks before you travel!
New scheme urges shoppers to
buy local
A new initiative to highlight the merits of
buying local has been launched in Exmoor
National Park.
The National Park Authority and Visit
Exmoor are working together to support
local producers and promote how the fine
produce sustainably grown, reared and
prepared within Greater Exmoor, benefits
the landscape and its communities.
Signs making it easier for shoppers to
identify local produce are being proudly
displayed in stores to shine a light on the
region’s producers and how buying local
benefits the environment, while delivering
food that is more tasty, nutritious and
sustainable.
Wildlife in winter
Here's how you can lend a helping
hand to wildlife in winter:
• Feeding birds in winter Birds may have
difficulty finding normal food in winter. To
help them stay strong leave out extra food.
• Helping badgers in severe weather
Badgers don't hibernate but do sleep
through most of the severe weather.
Nibbles such as lightly cooked meats,
cheese, peanuts and fruit would be
welcome.
• Help stock a squirrel's store Squirrels
store food to eat when food is scarce. To
help squirrels offer hazelnuts, walnuts and
almonds, plus chopped apple, beans,
carrots or spinach.
• Melting frozen ponds Toxic gases can
build up in frozen ponds killing fish or
frogs which may be hiding at the bottom. If
you have a pond check it every day for ice.
MARCH 2020 19
Love Lyn Valley: Going for Zero
Back to Basics: Why the Rush? Many governments around the world, including the UK and our own
Devon County Council, have declared a climate and environment emergency. This is a first important
step in acknowledging the urgency of tackling climate change with a need to follow this up with real
action. Some have set a target date for going carbon neutral of 2050 others of 2030 and many have
not given a target date at all. So why the need for a target date and why the rush? One significant factor
is the existence of (‘positive’) feedback loops. In any system a small disturbance can sometimes have
the effect of increasing that disturbance even more. In climate change, just to give a few examples:
First, and most topically, tree loss: due to climate change rainfall will become imbalanced creating a
greater risk of drought. The increase of forest fires and desertification in forested regions reduces their
ability to absorb carbon which further contributes to global warming.
Secondly loss of ice: ice is white and therefore reflects sunlight (84% of incoming solar radiation). As
Arctic, Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets melt there is less white ice. Water reflects only 5% of solar
radiation. This causes a further increase in global warming.
So climate change resulting from human activity is very real. Due to global warming there is ‘greater risk
of flooding, droughts and heat waves’, according to the government website (gov.uk). It is already
causing millions of people to suffer, lose their homes and even their lives. Melting polar ice and glaciers
are making sea levels rise, threatening coastal communities and low-lying islands such as the Maldives.
600 billion tons of melting ice flowing into oceans (2017, NASA) will permanently and drastically alter
the worlds coastlines, but well before that storms and floods will make these areas uninhabitable. For
example, the big rocks which were thrown into Lynmouth by the storm Ciara’s waves. With the warming
of the planet comes the warming of the oceans too, which adds to rising sea levels and increases the
probability of stronger and more frequent storms, hurricanes and cyclones.
Action taken now to reduce carbon emissions, has the chance to drastically limit the global temperature
rise to a safer level. There will still be global warming, and there will still be changes in the climate, but
these could be limited, prepared for and dealt with. No-one is immune to the negative effects of climate
change. Our voice, our actions are very important. LCA is for everyone; there is a Facebook page, an
Instagram page, and an online noticeboard padlet.com/lynclimateaction/lovelynvalley - for
communications and ideas
Climate Cameos Val and Steve of ‘Ginger Nut’ opened their Eco goods, home and gift store in Lynton
last September having wanted to run this kind of venture for some time. Concern for the climate is the
thread that runs throughout their choices both for what kind of things they sell and how they sell them.
Very relevant are their refillable and eco-friendly cleaning products: such as ‘Fill’ washing-up liquid,
laundry liquid, and personal cleaning products. Plastic containers, toxic additives, and palm oil are all
avoided. Visitors can either bring their own containers so that you only pay for the added weight of the
product or buy refillable glass containers. Val and Steve plan to sell milk in refillable containers soon.
And on the theme of product miles they buy as locally as possible: the best example of this has to be
the pack of wax wraps – a durable alternative for single use plastic cling-film – that are made locally in
Lynton. Other great ideas are the reusable coffee cups made from recycled coffee cups, glasses from
recycled glass, and products such as washable coconut fibre scourers and body wash soap bars. There
are also gift ideas from the ethical and Eco friendly and Devon based ‘Nkuku’ products. When in Lynton
why not pop in, not just for the Eco products but to be inspired by their ethos.
Dates for your diary
Devon Climate Week – 22 to 28 March. Look out for events in Lyn Valley and across Devon.
Child Sexual Exploitation is a type of child abuse involving young people and children being 'groomed'
and sexually exploited. It can take many forms eg, an apparently 'consensual' relationship with an older
person or a young person having sex in return for attention, cigarettes, alcohol or other gifts. Many young
people being exploited do not realise they are at risk and will not ask for help or may see themselves as
willing participants not realising what is happening to them is illegal. There are warning signs –
unexplained gifts or money, excessive use of mobile phone, older friends, being picked up from school,
self-harming plus more. If you know a young person is displaying warning signs you should take action by
ringing 101 or 999 or if you prefer not to speak to the police you can contact Children’s services 0345
155 1071 or out of hours 0845 6000388. If you are being exploited or abused HELP is available ring
116 000 for confidential help and advice, or Childline 0800 11 11.
It is Lambing Season and we ask that care and attention is taken controlling your dog in and around
to protect their livestock, providing there was no other way of stopping the dog worrying their animals
and they report the killing to the police within 48 hours. Livestock also includes domestic fowl, geese or
ducks.
Operation Snap is a secure online facility which allows submissions of video and photographic evidence
attention, careless driving, using a mobile phone handheld, not wearing a seat belt, contravening a red
traffic light and contravening solid white lines, however this is not an exhaustive list. You need to be 18
years old or over, able to supply the registration mark of the offending vehicle and be willing to sign a
witness statement and possibly appear in court. You can read the frequently asked questions before
MARCH 2020 35
As evening approached near Glenthorne
A short story in four parts
written by Richard Small, a North Devon author
He parked his car on the desolate earth lay-by just before County Gate and set off on foot in search of adventure. His
mind was taken by a sign that read, ‘Site of ancient Barrow’. It took longer than anticipated but he eventually found the
site and stood on a high point enjoying the commanding view of the valleys around, just as they who built it must have
done. His plan was changing all the time but he was enjoying it all so much, the view, the air, the sunshine. . . that raw
connection with nature itself. He decided to walk further afield and downhill towards the beach some one mile distant.
Glenthorne beach was surreally beautiful and obviously rarely visited. Perhaps he’d stayed too long but it was such a
wonderful day and he was sure he could easily retrace his steps. So far so good, he’d taken a track which he believed
would meet up with the one he’d used for the descent. It was a relentless but steady 3,000 feet climb back to the road
where he had earlier abandoned his car. He felt he’d reached about a third of the way but a quick glance at the lowering
sun told him he’d better get on with it. After a few minutes, he stopped to catch his breath and looked back to view his
progress. Horror of horrors, he was climbing on the wrong side of the wooded valley. He stepped off the track and, despite
the trauma of finding a meatless, dismembered sheep carcass on the way, the open deciduous woodland was easy going.
The easy going underfoot stopped abruptly at a barbed wire fence, beyond which the climb was thick with old conifers. He
walked along the stout wire fence looking for an easier way through. With an unusual touch of luck he found a weak point.
There was a darkness about the forest, a darkness in more ways than one. Trees and ground became a little lighter up
ahead and he hoped he was at the end but it turned out to be a small clearing. As he crossed the clearing, on the remnant
of a lone standing tree, he noticed what looked like scratch marks, they were wide and deep and reached nearly as high
as he was tall. Thoughts of a big cat immediately overwhelmed his mind and he looked around, staring into the
encroaching forest gloom….
Part 3/4
He looked about for something to use as a weapon. . . a small stone came to hand but he
threw it down and instead picked up a branch the length of a broom handle. He tested it
against the beast’s scratching post and it swiftly snapped in two. All the pieces of wood that
littered the floor of the clearing were the same, that’s why they were on the ground. They were
there because they were weak and . . . dead.
He knew that time was against him and he was soon going to have to move from this bright
clearing into the unknown dark of that now dreaded forest ahead . . . oh, how he wished he’d
gone another way. As he moved uphill to the first conifers his mind foolishly reminded him of
films he’d seen on TV about leopards and mountain lions dropping onto their prey from above,
with inescapable jaws gripping the throat to end all breath, all life. . . clever, silent, powerful
killers. These thoughts stopped him in his tracks for a moment while he frightened himself
even more by images of big cats following the scent of fresh blood. . . his blood.
Terror drove his legs into the darkening forest, he dared not look up for fear of what he might
see and he watched the ground intently where he placed his boots, not wishing to slip or to
look weak and become another hidden meal in the forest. No one had ever walked through
there he realised, and the black fur he’d seen wasn’t left by any black Labrador either. There
was no one for miles, no one would hear him scream. Sweat began to wet his once warm dry
clothes. He walked desperately, he breathed hard and felt alone. Afraid, tearful and alone.
He must have stumbled on another twenty minutes or so, the trees seemingly trying to trap
him with their low branches and careful not to trip in the undergrowth. Easier looking
pathways sprang up to lure him deeper into the unknown and his keen ears listened for any
noise. No birds had he heard, no sign of life, everything was expectantly silent. It seemed
everything, even the trees, were listening, watching, holding their breath, for a beginning as
well as an ending to the unfolding drama.
To be continued …..
MARCH 2020 37
For 45 years, The Plough Arts Centre has
sought to bring the very best in live
music, comedy, film, theatre and the
visual arts to Torrington and across North
Devon - this is what we're passionate
about. We hope you value what we do.
It’s what makes The Plough the “jewel of
North Devon“.
In fact, this year we have seen the
highest audience figures in its 45 year
history, and we have many exciting plans
for the future.
But right now the Plough needs short
term financial help to survive the next
few months.
As The Plough’s Director Richard
Wolfenden Brown puts it: “Despite a
thriving arts and community programme,
excellent customer feedback, and
audiences for films and live events that
have grown by 55% over the last five
years, The Plough has experienced a
recent dramatic rise in overheads
coupled with a reduction in core funding
which has created the perfect storm in
our delicate finances,”
We are tightening our belts and seeking
ways to save money, including reducing
staff hours in order to try to stabilise
finances. But to survive the short term
we need your help.
This appeal is to raise urgent funds to
ensure The Plough survives.
News from Exmoor Pony Centre, Ashwick, Dulverton TA22 9QE
Welcome to 2020 and the start of a new season at the Pony Centre. We opened on
Sunday, 16th February and have already held our first activity of the year.
Foal handling is well underway with most of the colts ready to be castrated and the
riding ponies are back from their winter holiday being prepared for the coming year’s
trekking and other riding activities. Our Pop-up Shop in Wellington was very successful
and we took nearly £600 over the week. A big thank you to everyone who came to buy
and to our wonderful volunteers who ran it for the week. We hope to repeat it this year
just before Christmas.
You may remember we were awarded a grant by Tesco
Bags of Help at Ilfracombe to create a mobile pony
roadshow to enable us to take ponies and information
about our charity to many more people. The display is
now complete and we are looking forward to taking it
out on the road this year. Thank you to the people of
lfracombe who voted for us and made this happen.
In January, we were contacted by Coppershell Farm Sanctuary in Wiltshire who rescued
a young Exmoor but did not have the experience to handle him. They were desperate
for him to have a better life so he is now at the Centre and, once properly handled and
out of quarantine, he’ll be gelded and introduced to our other geldings.
We are open until 30th October 2020. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and
Sunday 10am - 4pm. Closed Tuesday and Saturday. Admission is free but we welcome
donations to enable us to continue caring for the ponies.
MARCH 2020 41
Medway Queen Report
Dunkirk 2020 With the 80th anniversary of Operation Dynamo later this year “Dunkirk” has to
be something of a theme for 2020.
At the time of writing, the Ramsgate Expedition is “on” but not all details have been decided. Keep an eye
on mailto:info@medwayqueen.co.uk for the arrangements as they emerge. In broad terms the ship will be
open to the public as usual at Gillingham Pier on Saturdays until the end of April. Very early in May she will
be towed to Ramsgate where she is booked on the slipway for hull cleaning and repainting. The slipway is
clearly visible from public areas of the harbour, especially the East Pier, but yard visits will not be possible
for safety reasons and because we cannot afford any delays in the work. PS Medway Queen will be moved
from the slipway when work is complete and will be moored at the Commercial Quay in Ramsgate’s Royal
Harbour for the Dunkirk 80th Anniversary Commemorations. Before that time our team of volunteers will
be working flat out to get the ship ready. To a large extent what we can put on at Ramsgate depends on
their progress. The “Saturday Team” and others will be bracing themselves for what could be nearly a
whole week of “Saturdays”! The society will be looking for ways to raise funds and awareness of our
restoration project over the course of the Ramsgate event and throughout the year. Two merchandising
projects have already been commissioned. “Medway Queen – West”, AKA Reading Support Group, have
ordered a batch of commemorative 00 gauge box vans for the anniversary which is due for delivery in
April. Those too will be available and an N gauge variant is planned for later in the year in time for The
International N Gauge Show. Both products will also be available via our website. These models will be in
addition to the General Steam Navigation joint venture announced last time and now available through
the usual channels. A new book “HMS Medway Queen Memories of Dunkirk” will be published shortly
before the anniversary event and will be available on board at Ramsgate. The book is planned to be
roughly A5 size with 76 pages. Cover price will be in the region of £8. As with the “Medway Queen Club
50th Anniversary” book, published in 2016, it will contain personal recollections by those who were there.
The captain’s “narrative log” sent to the admiralty, extracts from a diary kept by one of the crew, accounts
by Thomas Russell (ship’s cook) and John Graves (1st Lieutenant) printed in full. Personal recollections
from the troops who were evacuated by HMS Medway Queen give the other side of the story. We are
fortunate that no less than 3 members of the crew were taking photographs at that time. The First
Lieutenant took some, which we have courtesy of the PSPS Collection. Two others, Eric Woodroffe and
Roger Matthews, gave their material to the Medway Queen Preservation Society. We have a Foreword
written by the grandson of the captain at Dunkirk and numerous accounts and information contributed by
the descendants of both crew and troops. A book signing event with the author, in Ramsgate, is a distinct
possibility! Please remember that PS Medway Queen will not be open to visitors at Gillingham Pier during
May 2020 or for the early part of June. Details will be posted on www.medwayqueen.co.uk and kept as up
to date as possible.
Fundraising Among the donations and bequests received by the Medway Queen Preservation Society was
£3,300 from our “Reading Support Group”. There were larger donations and it doesn’t sound like a
significant amount but it brings the group’s total contribution to the Medway Queen restoration project, to
£103,333! This “headline” total includes some additional benefits such as GiftAid and match funding on
appropriate amounts. It was back in 1997 that Noreen Chambers, then secretary of the society,
encouraged members to raise £1000 by whatever means they thought appropriate. Her aim was to get
100 members to raise £1000 each. The Reading Support Group was formed in response to that with the
aim of contributing a thousand or so – they just didn’t know when to stop! The group’s success has only
been possible with the backing of the MQPS Trustees and the very many people who have given their time
to help out on stalls, often at some cost to themselves – THANK YOU ALL. We must also thank all those
publications that support us (including Paddle Wheels), our patient suppliers and, most of all, our
customers at shows and by post. As stated in the last issue we have funds allocated for the work on the
hull at Ramsgate but donations and sponsorship would be very helpful towards the cost of the tow and
insurance for the voyage. Both private and commercial sponsorship would be very welcome. If you can
help please contact the Medway Queen Preservation Society: MQPS, Gillingham Pier, Pier Approach Road,
