the battle. Read about our suggestions on pages 14-15.

any age and you can draw, paint, make a model, take a photo. The choice

is yours! We have lined up some amazing local judges who can’t wait to

see your ideas come to reality.

space we can recommend some excellent local tradespeople. They’ll

offer ideas and advice as well as good service.

Getting Active

This January I was lucky enough to attend the first stage performance by

some very talented young dancers from Milton Keynes Dance Theatre.

If you are a young dancer find out how you can audition for their next

production – Peter Pan which takes place in October. It could be a very

exciting time for 40 local young dancers!

Dance not your thing? There are lots of other local activities going

on – history, nature, art, food - you name it we’re featuring at least

one of each!

Make sure read on and support this amazing local area by keeping your

business and leisure essentially local - Emma

Feature

Make a Difference to RSPCA Milton

Keynes & North Bucks

RSPCA Milton Keynes and North Bucks is part

of a network of countrywide branches. Each

branch is registered as an individual charity and

is responsible for its own funding. Of course, this

means you can make a difference to them and the

animals in their care.

They raise their own funds to rescue, rehabilitate and

re-home animals. The generous donations from public

and businesses ensure they can continue to help

hundreds of animals.

Monthly giving provides a regular income that means

they can plan their activities. Importantly, you can set

up that regular monthly donation within minutes.

It is so easy and you can start from as little as £1 per

month.

Visit Virgin Money Giving to set up your regular

donations. Search for RSPCA Milton Keynes and

North Buckinghamshire Branch. Once found, select

the“Pay Monthly” button, then choose an amount and

complete your details.

Love Your Dog’s Heart

Valentine's day has been and gone, but you still …

love your dog's heart.

The Veterinary Centre is offering a screening

programme. Certain breeds and ages of dogs are

particularly at risk of developing heart disease –

especially various toy / small breeds, Spaniels and

large breeds over 25Kg in weight.

Recent research shows that by picking up heart

problems in affected dogs before clinical symptoms

develop (poor exercise tolerance, shortness of breath,

cough, weight loss) the quality and the length of life

for these pets will improve.

Clinical trials have demonstrated a clear benefit with

those being treated in the early stages. On average

they will have 15 months longer before clinical signs

develop and also a longer lifespan overall.

It’s National Pet Month from 1 April - 10 May

The campaign aims to raise awareness of

responsible pet ownership and celebrate the

benefits of our pets. They also want to encourage

fundraising for the nation’s needy pets.

Well-Being

SENSITIVE TEETH

Reacting to the cold - heat - sugar - acid - drinks?

When are teeth most likely to be sensitive?

Da Vinci Dental Centre say you are most likely to feel the sensitivity when drinking or

eating something cold, from cold air catching your teeth, and sometimes with hot foods

or drinks. Some people have sensitivity when they have sweet or acidic food and drinks.

Sensitised or diseased?

If the pain fades away quickly then we’re most likely talking about a sensitive

tooth. In cases where the pain persists for minutes or even longer after

the irritant cause is gone, there is a higher chance that we’re

dealing with a more seriously diseased tooth. In this case we

would advise you to see your dentist as soon as possible.

What treatments can the dentist offer?

During an examination the dental team will talk to

you about your symptoms. They will look at your

teeth to find out what is causing the sensitivity

and to find the best way of treating it.

How can I prevent sensitive teeth?

Da Vinci Dental Centre advises you

brush your teeth last thing at night

and in the morning with fluoride

toothpaste. Use small, circular

movements with a soft-to

medium-brush and avoid

brushing side to side.

Meet the Da Vinci Dental Centre team

of understanding practitioners who strongly believe

that dental treatment should be PAIN-FREE!

Imagination is Your Only Limitation

If your commitment to your New Year goal - weight loss, fitness,

career or mindfulness - is already starting to slip, take back control

and believe in yourself.

REFOCUS

If you are feeling a little overwhelmed

perhaps losing the focus to achieve

your goal - get outside! Time in a natural

environment is proven to get your

mind back into gear, reduce stress and

improve creativity.

TOP TIP

Tough times

don’t last, tough

people do!

SOLUTIONS NOT PROBLEMS

Setbacks are one of the main reasons for failing

to achieve your goal. Stick to a routine and

don’t let excuses become justifications – you

can run in the rain! See problems as challenges

or opportunities and get back on track. Take

small steps to build up gradually.

SPARKLE WITH

SUPPORT

If you lose your initial

motivation because

temptation is easier than

the effort, grit your teeth.

Don’t give upas you won’t

be running a marathon the

month after training began,

nor will you be able to

completely free yourself of

unhealthy habits. Get support

from your friends, family, your

local gym or a coach – find

your inspiration.

FREE YOUR MIND

Put technology away and take up Pilates, yoga,

painting, gardening – anything that will help you

to clear your mind.

LISTEN TO YOUR

MIND

It’s OK to have self-doubt,

it’s what you do with it

that counts. Focus on

what you can control and

evaluate what and how

you have achieved.

A coach will challenge

and encourage you to

find a way!

TOP TIP

FIND YOUR FOCUS

Set a weekly routine and block out time for your activity.

Whatever your dream - sport, weight loss, art classes or

career - meet regularly with a personal trainer or coach

who will keep you on track. Stop saying ‘I can’t do it’ and

replace it with ‘I can if I find a different way!’

Sometimes later

becomes never.

Do it now!

Success magazine

The right way leads to confidence and everything feels

so much easier. Personal trainers and coaches for life skills

will help to guide you, they aren’t just for those at the top

of their game.

What is Sepsis?

Sepsis is a life-threatening reaction to

an infection, particularly those with

weak immunity or while recovering

from illness.

The immune system overreacts to an

infection or injury and rather than fight

the infection it attacks our own body’s

organs and tissues. Early diagnosis and

antibiotic treatment are paramount to

prevent organ failure and death.

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms present differently in

everyone and can include but are not

limited to flu, gastroenteritis or a chest

infection, blue pale or blotchy skin, lips

or tongue, rashes, breathing difficulties

and sleepiness.

PREVENT INFECTION

• Keep up-to-date with vaccines

• Clean and care for wounds

• Follow all instructions when taking

medication

• Wash your hand regularly

RECOVERING FROM SEPSIS

Most people make a full recovery but

it is a slow process, and symptoms like

tiredness, weakness, lack of appetite and

mood changes can last.

After Sepsis

• Reduce work hours while recovering

• Take gentle exercise to build strength

• Adopt good sleep techniques

• Get support

• Eat little and often

The busy In Bloom teams

around the area don’t stop for

the weather! Over the winter

months they’ve updated floral

displays and tidied the areas.

While we’ve featured Stony and

Wolverton, residents of other

villages also take part to make

their villages look beautiful.

Let us know about your floral

village activities.

Stony in Bloom

The Stony in Bloom volunteers

are embracing the environmental

crisis with this year’s plans.

Watering over the summer is

always an issue while winter

work parties dodge the rain. This

winter they’ve removed leggy

shrubs and replaced them in the

beds at King George Crescent.

They cleared enthusiastic weeds

in the Bluebell Wood ensuring

bluebells will peep out. Lovely

pale yellow primroses cheer the

Market Square and the Ousebank

/Calverton corner to bring a bit of

spring.

School

Ron and Eileen Cox sponsored

tree planting at Russell Street

Primary School and St Mary

and St Giles Junior School. Ron,

with Mary and Phil Sarre, Mary

Robinson, and Andy Malleson,

prepared the ground at Russell

Street to plant apple trees and

raspberry bushes. The St Mary

and St Giles South pupils marked

out the location of the trees

before planting and watering.

Weather Delays

The wet weather before Christmas

caused some delays to planting

out the winter pansies. Helped by

the caretakers, the team managed

to plant some gorgeous daffodils

by the street signs at the top of

Windsor Street, Marron Lane,

along Gloucester Road and across

into Greenleys. Tesco, Wolverton

donated a £20 voucher towards

the cost of the bulbs.

Colours for Summer

At the end of May, volunteers will

take delivery of 3000 summer

bedding plants ready for planting.

The colour scheme will be bright

and cheerful white, yellow and

purples.

Volunteers and Helpers

The Wolverton and Greenleys

In Bloom teams still need more

and gardens looking their best.

Outside of their 1pm sessions

every Wednesday starting at the

Town Hall, they add extra sessions,

working around the weather and

Salt Clinic MK Helps Allergies

Well-Being

The allergy

season is fast

approaching,

and there’ll be

more runny

noses, sneezes,

itchy eyes and

a possible

cough for

many hay-fever

sufferers.

Increased immunoglobulin E (IgE) cause the

frustrating symptoms – our body releases this natural

antibody when exposed to allergens. The IgE then

binds to proteins resulting in an allergic reaction.

Natural remedies, like the Salt Clinic MK at Old

Stratford, help to relieve problems and are becoming

the choice of many.

Salt miners in Russia and Europe identified the

benefits of salt therapy or halotherapy in the 1800s.

Although scientists do not fully understand the

benefits, it is thought that inhaled salt eliminates

airborne particles from the airways and desensitises

the hypersensitive mast cells response in the lungs.

This process helps to alleviate allergy symptoms and

strengthen the body’s immune system against allergic

reactions to pollen and other allergens.

Treatments bring many other benefits – the

comfortable chairs are placed in a peaceful, sterile

room. You can relax and read as the salt air and

particles circulate calming your mind and body as you

breath them in. The salt is pharmaceutical grade with

no other chemicals added or used.

To find out how to book and whether it would work

for you call the Salt Clinic MK.

weight and protecting the environment food anxiety is also on the rise. It’s

time to begin enjoying the art of preparing food to eat and ridding the idea

of good and bad foods.

BUILD YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH

FOOD

Clean eating focuses on whole foods and

ingredients that limit or avoid processed

foods and additives. Keep food in as natural

a state as possible, using herbs and spices to

develop flavours, and avoid long-life, synthetic

preservatives and chemicals. This includes

sweeteners, colourings and flavourings. Processed

foods tend to use artificial ingredients, sugars, fats

and salt, rarely without much nutritional value.

TOP TIP

Buy local for

fresher, more

natural foods and

fewer airmiles

NATURALLY TASTY

The approach is life-style changing as

you’ll develop a new relationship with

food and ingredients. Home-cooked

dishes help you to develop a better

understanding of what you are eating.

Focus on thoughtful, flexible eating with

fresh, whole and nutritious food. Don’t

think of foods as bad - eat meat, follow a

fish, vegetarian or vegan diet and even

occasionally indulge in your favourite

fast food. Clean eating is adaptable for all

types of diet - nut or milk-free, diabetic,

high-blood pressure or diet for digestive

complications. Weight loss isn’t the aim

of a clean diet, it is about increasing the

quality of what you eat by choosing

healthier options.

TOP TIP

Don’t go natural

all at once, gradual

changes work

better with

children!

HIDDEN GEM

This edition’s hidden is real loose leaf tea from ARTea Room.

All 44 options are Fair-Trade sourced, come with a decaf option

and you can’t beat the delicious flavour of real tea. Most opt for

full-bodied English Breakfast, blended with Assam and Ceylon

leaves. But, why not try the Earl Grey with its distinctive yet

sophisticated flavour that’s infused with natural bergamot oil and

been popular since the 1830s. Other choices include Darjeeling,

Assam and Ceylon each with their own special blend. Throw out

the bags for a true tea flavour!

Owners of The Bamboo Cottage, Tim and

Kam Wong, in Old Stratford are celebrating an

incredible 12 years in business. Their authentic

Chinese cuisine and the care they show their

customers continues to make them one of the

most popular takeaway restaurants in the area.

course, the traditional Chinese sweet and sour,

chop suey and chow mein dishes continue to

impress us locals too! If you are not sure what

to eat, try one of the special and Peking set

dinners for up to four people. Tim, head chef,

uses authentic and fresh ingredients as well as

using a local Chinese supplier for his spices. We

all have our favourites and after all this time,

mine is still the fried spicy tofu with chilli and

garlic!

In this edition, Mother’s Day will soon be upon us

and our writers have thought about their mums. I am

not too sure about the joke about the neat house

so I’ve added my own – guess which one it is! I love

the thoughts and ideas about mums and ways to

make them happy. I’m also thinking about children

who don’t have a mum, let’s give them a few extra

thoughts and hugs this March.

Quotes about Mothers

or Simply for Children

From Matilda by Roald Dahl

‘It's a funny thing about mothers... Even when their own

child is the most disgusting little blister you could ever

imagine, they still think that he or she is wonderful.’

From Peter Pan

‘Can anything harm us, mother, after the night-lights

are lit?’ ‘Nothing, precious,’ she said; ‘they are the eyes a

mother leaves behind her to guard her children.’

From Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

‘He didn't realise that love as powerful as your mother's

for you leaves its own mark.’

From Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice

Sendak

‘And Max, the king of all wild things, was lonely and

wanted to be where someone loved him best of all.’

A Recipe for a Great

Mum

Take half a cup of LOVE,

A teaspoon of caring,

A pinch of reliability,

Stir in 50 grams of honesty,

Pour 1 litre of generosity and mix with kindness,

Add 10 kilograms of trustworthiness.

Your result will be a perfect, fabulous mother (take

care of her forever.)

Things to Make your

Mum Smile

• You can pick flowers for her and make a flower

necklace. (Make sure you pick them from

somewhere you are allowed to.)

• You can make breakfast in bed for her (with adult

supervision).

• You could make her a card - mums love

homemade gifts.

• You could write a poem about her.

• Watch her favourite film together.

• Leave lots of lovely notes around the house for her

to find.

• You can let her relax and do the house work.

• You can cook her a special meal.

• Give her a warm hug

• Tell her that you love her.

WORDSEARCH

Look for all the words in the grid that relate to

Mother's Day. Find which word is missing from the

grid and then think about which words remind you

of your mum. We also think mums are warm.

The Mum Way

Mums are the most important things in

the world because without them, you

wouldn't be here. They love you more

than anything in the world. They are the

ones who cook you dinner and the ones

who are there for you when you cry. So,

Mother's Day is the day to celebrate your

mum for all the good thing they have

done for you. They might make you feel

embarrassed sometimes, but they just

want to care for you! If you are lucky to

have an amazing mum – show her how

much you appreciate her.

This Northampton-based charity runs free boat

trips for people of all ages with physical or

Community Boating is therefore recruiting extra

volunteers to crew the boats. It’s an interesting

and highly- rewarding opportunity, possibly best

Talented Dancers Excel in

Romeo and Juliet

This January, audiences were treated to a truly magnificent

performance of Romeo and Juliet by 18 young aspiring

dancers. The talented ballet and contemporary dancers, aged

from 12 years up to 20, showed impressive physical ability and

real emotion in their performances.

Taking the lead as Romeo, David Dilnot, from Stony Stratford,

combined acrobatic skills with his dance, displaying some

particularly impressive leaps, flips and sword fighting. Amy

Miller and Phoebe Bones took turns to perform Juliet, drawing

audiences in with their graceful and emotional dance moves.

Max Thomas as Tybalt and Fiona Cox as Mercutia along with

the rest of the cast were equally talented. Behind the scenes

Jess Yeo assisted with choreography while Liv Beckett was

involved with production design.

Owen Lane, Director of the newly formed Milton Keynes

Dance Theatre aims to give young dancers the opportunity to

be part of professional level locally-based theatre productions.

This was the first of many exciting productions planned for

Milton Keynes.

Look out for the Charity Gala this May, where dancers perform

to raise funds and awareness for The Brain Tumour Charity. In

October a spectacular performance of Peter Pan is planned.

Congratulations to everyone involved.

Prepare To Sell Your Home

Prepare your house for market with a spring clean on the inside

and out. Clean the windows, mow lawns, hide laundry and fix

broken items, then declutter and tidy. Each room needs a defined

purpose, use good lighting, mirrors and pale paints to create space.

By making your home more appealing you’ll add £s.

Get it Valued

Get at least three different valuations - large high street, small local

family-run and online agents value for free. The middle value is

probably the most realistic option and the selling price will depend

on how accurate this is. The general market, buyer and speed in

which you need to sell also play a part. A valuation shouldn’t tie

you to a contract.

Take it to Market

A contract with an estate agent is legally binding and you must

stick to the terms of the agreement or they could sue. In return,

they’ll treat you fairly, pass on offers and other information. An

estate agent does most of the work - marketing the property,

showing potential buyers around and organising the EPC (energy

performance certificate).

Check estate agents sales records, find out what they’ll do for you

and negotiate, multiple agents may cost more. Fees are usually a

percentage of the agreed sale price, ranging from 0.75% to 3%.

Online agents often offer fixed prices, are cheaper and some offer

a no sale no fee option, although you’ll have more work! You could

also sell your own home but it’s time consuming as you’ll have to

organise your own marketing, organise the EPC and show people

around. It’s also harder to vet potential clients. Advertise in local

press, notice boards and online market places like HouseWeb or

The House Shop. Some people even use social media.

Buyers must make the offer through the estate agents. Offers are

not binding until the contract is exchanged and the price will still

be up for negotiation if problems are found. Private buyers make

their offer directly to you.

Handing over the keys

Solicitors or licensed conveyancers must be qualified and insured

to manage the conveyancing process - the legal transfer of your

property to the buyer. Their work includes drafting the contract,

land registry, council searches, answering questions from the buyer

and handling money exchange. A contract should include the sale

prices, property boundaries, fixtures and fittings, legal restrictions

and rights, planning restrictions and services. Once both parties

accept and sign the contract, the agreement is legally binding and

neither side can withdraw without paying compensation. Monies

are then transferred and legal documents and keys handed over.

Is Retirement Even A Thing

Anymore?

It is becoming clearer from

the discussions I have with my

clients that more are choosing

to work less for longer. Gone

are the days when retirement

would be a set point in time

when you stopped working

completely. It appears that

people are more likely to reduce their hours at work or work somewhere

different at or around 60. They'll continue to do this for a number of years.

There are a few reasons for this

1. Living longer means the retirement time period, once we give up work

completely, is longer.

2. Aware of our health and the importance of the work/life balance.

3. We aren’t saving enough for retirement.

4. Changes to pension access rules has made it much easier to organise

flexible pension payments.

Even when you do eventually finish work completely the pattern of

retirement spending is changing. It used to be that when you retired you

used your pension to secure a fixed income for the rest of your life and

therefore your spending flatlined.

Now think of a ‘U’ shape. Higher spending at the start of your retirement

while you are still healthy and do lots of different things. Then a dip as you

get older with declining health, settling down to home comforts. Finally

an increase again due to potential care costs.

indication of future returns and clients may get back

less than they have invested.

It’s great that pensions have finally caught up with these changes in

spending patterns as you can now access your pension on a flexible basis

from age 55. This means you can match your pension withdrawals

with the spending you require. Higher spending while younger and

then less spending as you get older.

But it’s vital you have the right pension that allows you to take

advantage of these flexibilities. Pensions such as defined benefit,

state pension & pension annuities, will NOT allow you to take

your pension on a flexible basis. You need a personal pension in

place.

In an ideal world it’s best to have the best of both worlds. A secure

income that covers all your essential spending (things like bills that

are not likely to change much) and then a separate pot which you can

withdraw from separately.

If you would like to know if your pension is set up to provide you with a work/life balance then please get in

touch with us. We offer an initial meeting at our expense. By the end of the meeting you will know where you

stand and what you need to do.

Professional

Being Generous can

be Rewarding…

Wills are often the primary consideration in the context

of succession planning and rightfully so; the importance

of a well-thought out, competently drafted Will cannot

be overstated. However, if you are one of the “lucky”

ones whose estate may attract a liability to inheritance

tax (IHT) on death, as a tax planning tool, a Will has its

limitations. It is therefore necessary for those looking to

mitigate IHT to take action sooner rather than later and

consider the use of lifetime gifting as part of the wider

estate planning process.

How can Lifetime Gifting Help?

By decreasing the size of your estate during your

lifetime, it is possible to reduce IHT payable on death.

There are various types of gifts that can be made which

are classed as “exempt gifts” and once made, the value is

outside of your estate for IHT purposes.

There is no limit as to how much a person may gift away

during their lifetime to other individuals and if even if

the gift does not classify as an exempt gift, provided the

gift is survived by 7 years, it will have no effect on your

estate’s IHT liability upon death.

Are There any Risks?

The rules surrounding lifetime gifting and IHT are

complex and require consideration and planning. If a

gift is not survived by 7 years, the value of that gift can

fall back into your estate on death for IHT purposes. It

is also important to consider your own financial needs

and whether you can afford to make the gift without

negatively impacting on your own standard of living.

The loss of control of an asset can create issues which

is when the use of an appropriate trust structure might

prove useful. Particular care should be taken when

a gift is contemplated and the donor is intending to

retain a benefit as this could fall foul of HMRC’s “gift

with reservation of benefit” rules. It is also necessary to

consider the potential capital gains tax implications of

any intended gift.

If you feel that you would benefit from IHT planning

advice, our Private Client team are always on hand

to help and would welcome your enquiry. Call us on

Stay or Move? That is the Question

There’re many reasons for needing more space at home. The solution to this problem

is simple – extend or move. This decision is likely to be based on balancing costs and

realising values in staying or going.

MAKE THE DECISION

When the market is buoyant and house prices

continually rise, it can make sense to move before your

budget won’t allow you to. When the market is a little

less stable, it may be wiser to extend. But, while an

extension could add value, save costs on stamp duty

and other moving costs, it usually comes with a lot of

stress. Your location, schools and relationship with your

neighbours often having a bearing on your decision.

TOP TIP

Discuss your options with

an architect – they’ll know

planning laws and offer

imaginative solutions.

THE VALUE IN EXTENDING

Some estimates suggest that adding a loft

extension for an extra bedroom and toilet

could add as much as 21% to the value for

your home while conservatories may add

up to 10%. Balance the build costs with the

extra value because if they don’t balance it

may not be worth it.

DO YOU REALLY NEED TO MOVE?

De-clutter and make home improvements - fitted

wardrobes, a new kitchen or bathroom first.

SEEING THROUGH THE LIGHT

Upgraded windows and new patio

doors can also make your space feel

lighter and brighter. Make the most of

your windows and add a bespoke seat

that will double up as storage. Check

planning laws first.

UPDATE ON A BUDGET

If finances don’t stretch to the

kitchen you dream about – you

can get similar effects by simply

changing the doors or adding

cupboards.

Local joiners can provide storage

solutions with bespoke built-in

wardrobes and boxed window

seats. When space is limited,

steal ideas from your local café -

a breakfast bar next to a window

Planning

Permission

Planning permissions were

relaxed in 2012. The relaxation

allows homeowners to

undertake some types of

building work with implied

consent. Implied consent known

as Permitted Development

(PD) negates the need for full

planning permission.

Consider Certain Restrictions

PD allocation takes into account

space added by previous owners

reducing potential extensions.

Conservation areas, National Parks

and Areas for Outstanding Natural

Beauty are subject to restrictions.

Listed buildings are also subject to

restrictions while maisonettes and

flats have no PD rights.

USE COLOUR WISELY

Talk to your painter and

decorator about colours. Go

lighter for a sense of space,

colours with greater depth will

help to highlight kitchen units

and add warmth. Too much

colour or very dark ones can

overpower a room.

There are Limits

Different limits apply to the

distances and heights you can

extend both single and doublestorey

extensions. There are also

differences between detached

or attached homes. Rules on the

types of windows and how they

open also apply. A loft conversion

is usually permitted. However if

dormer windows face the road

they require permission. Porches

also come under permitted

development. Builders must use

similar materials to the rest of the

house (apart from conservatories).

PD builds must comply with

building regulations. An extension

cannot cover more than 50% of

the original garden.

THE STONY STORY QUEST

MARCH 2020

The Stony Story Quest, created by Russell Street

School Parents Association, aims to inspire families

to share, create and read stories. Your family can take

part this March.

Collect a Quest Treasure Map and Log Book from

Stony Stratford Library, The Rowans Children’s Centre

and Story Quest locations on the High Street. Then,

hunt for gold story stones on the two trails, or quests around

Fuller’s Slade, Galley Hill and Stony Stratford

SUPPORTING

LOCAL

PEOPLE &

GROUPS

Crafting for Change created the stones with designs to

fuel children’s creativity and develop story ideas. The trail

ends with a wooden boat-themed story-telling area at Old

Hayes Boatyard, by York House, inspired by historian Alison

Leighton’s research. Here, a treasure chest containing smaller

replicas of the gold stones will ensure their imaginative

journey continues. Families should then head to Stony’s

coffee shops where they’ll find more stones for more stories

next to the Relax and Read children’s book boxes.

The Russell Street School PA is collaborating with SMSG and

Russell Street Schools, the Rowan's Children's Centre and

Friends of Stony Stratford Library to organise the event. Go to

the library for details including the prizes for completing the

quest or contact Sasha at freemansasha@hotmail.com

Thanks to Stony Stratford Town Council for the generous

GREENLEYS FIRST

SCHOOL BURN THE

TOWN DOWN

Year 2 children and staff

at Greenleys First School

watched their very own Baker Street burn to the

ground this January. The clever young children,

along with parents and carers, built the Tudor

houses to learn about the Great Fire of London

and the dangers of fire. The houses, made from

boxes and recycled materials ensured the fire

was as realistic as in 1666. The light wind stoked

the flames speedily spreading the fire through

the houses, burning them to the ground within

minutes. Teacher, Sally Carson, showed how by

creating a wind break between the houses, the fire

could be stopped.

When Building Work Goes Wrong

Despite all our best efforts to make sure our building

projects go smoothly, sometimes things just go wrong!

When issues occur, a reputable builder will

normally deal with you amicably and with good

communication. If on the odd occasion this does not

happen there are things you can do.

1. Checks – is the trader is a member of a trade

association or an approved trader scheme. If so,

contact these organisations to see if they can assist –

some offer arbitration services.

2. Alternative Dispute Resolution Service

(ADR) – some traders will work with an (ADR). Most

importantly, get the ADR involved as soon as you are

concerned about communications with the trader.

3. The Citizens Advice Consumer Service – get their

practical advice which includes standard letters. They

will provide intelligence to local trading standards

services to identify and deal with any criminal

offences. Call them 03454 040506.

If the trader fails to co-operate, for amounts under

£10,000, you can sue the trader through the County

Court yourself. However, instruct a solicitor to deal

with your case if project costs are valued at more than

£10,000.

Beware, even in the event that you obtain a County

Court Judgment, you will only receive your money

back IF the trader has it.

Follow the guidelines of employing a trader before

you start your project.

Embracing Nature in your Garden

Whether you are eco-conscious or not, work with nature to enjoy your garden even more.

Build nature into your garden plan by using more natural materials and methods. They'll

reduce the hard work and costs while attracting wildlife and lessening the need for chemicals.

REDUCE THE EXPENSE

Plants bought from garden centres give instant

colour and form. However, reduce costs with

cuttings and seeds from friends’ gardens. Choose

indigenous and bee-friendly plants like lavender.

Go for marigolds and sunflowers to attract ladybirds

and lacewings which’ll eat aphids for tea! Create

pots and containers from your own junk or look in

charity /recycling or salvage centres. Visit Watling

Reclamation along the A5 towards Towcester.

TOP TIP

Gravel is back in

fashion, it’s particularly

good for drainage

and saving on

watering.

IT’S ALL IN THE PLAN

Whether you’ve moved into a new property

with a blank canvas or you’re updating an

established garden, start with a plan. The

plan should reflect your vision for a finished

garden. The benefits of one will mean that

you can carry out the work in stages, when

you and your wallet are ready. Include

elements to make life easier, fun and relaxing.

Think in rooms or sections and create one

area of privacy, maybe add a spa to help relax

tired muscles after the hard work. Entertain

the children with a dedicated play area while

you relax or work on the garden. Get ideas

from our landscapers.

ENJOY THE WEEDS

Weeds are simply flowers that

usually choose to grow in the

wrong place! They often look

great over the summer and rarely

need watering or feeding and our

insects love them too.

RECORD YOUR PROGRESS

Take before, during and after pictures as a reminder

of all the hard work and effort. Your garden will

change as it matures, save the memories.

GROWING COMPANIONS

Going greener can reduce your costs.

Companion planting protects plants

from insects, encourages growth and

reduces or even stops the need for

chemicals. Old coffee grounds thrown

onto the soil provide nitrogen to

improve plant growth. Vitamin-rich water

from cooking vegetables is perfect for

watering. Saltwater or white vinegar with

water kills weeds. The ‘no-dig’ philosophy

of regenerative farming improves soil

structure and saves your back.

TOP TIP

Choose perennial

rather than annual

flowers to save

water.

KEEP THE MAINTENANCE LOW

Kick out the neatly trimmed hedges and structured plants. Instead,

adopt a more natural design, particularly if time is at a premium.

Work commitments, young families along with the challenging

physical effort that comes with age means your garden should do

the work for you.

Veg of the

Edition

Onions originate from Asia, and

are one of the most useful and

widely-used ingredients in cooking.

Few recipes would work without

them but they also have a range of

medicinal powers.

They contain natural sugar, vitamins

A, B6, C and E, and minerals like

sodium, potassium, iron, folic acid

and fibre. Eaten raw the benefits are

greater and medicinal folk law sees

them as a cure for colds, coughs and

asthma. Recent research has found

they contain a compound with

similar effects to insulin. Sadly they’re

not a substitute for your prescription.

Onions vary in size, strength and

colour. Red onions are preferred in

salads due to their slightly milder

taste. Spring onions are basically

immature onions and are also perfect

for salads. Shallots are small in size

and are an essential element in most

French cuisine. Spanish onions are

the best option for omelettes and

stir-fries.

Onions are renowned for their

eye-watering compounds while

preparing – few solutions really work

to solve the problem. Finally, no

harvest festival would be complete

without a competition to grow the

biggest, most shapely onion.

Foliage from shrubs and evergreens will provide the permanent

all-year-round colour, structure and interest. A few annual wild,

meadow or cottage garden seeds will offer movement and sound.

Pop a few herbs and veg between the flowers then share and enjoy

the produce with your friends. Offset with a manicured lawn.

Call in the experts - Green Thumb, The Grass and Resin

Warehouse or Prestige Lawns for the grass while Maxwell

Home and Garden will tidy and clear. The tree experts will stop

trees and shrubs from taking over - within the law!

Will New Parking Code fix

Nightmare Fines?

Over 10,000 people contacted the Citizens

Advice Bureau for advice about parking

tickets last year. The government has

listened to growing concerns and are

planning a new parking Code. The Code

will protect drivers from over-zealous

parking companies.

Although the parking industry has a Code

to govern parking, its use is voluntary.

The British Standards Institution is setting

the new mandatory Code with one set of rules to follow. It will

reform parking and address the aggressive nature of some private

companies and councils.

If a company breaks the Code they will no longer be able to request

information from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency data

to chase motorists for their charges. It should also be easier for

motorists to challenge unfair parking tickets.

Grace and Parking

A 10-minute grace period applies to all

council parking; this will also apply to all

private car parks throughout the UK. If

you return to your car a few minutes late

you will no longer get a fine, whether it is

a free or paid for space.

CCTV Spy Cars

There will be a ban on CCTV spy cars from enforcing on-street

parking, unless safety is an issue. Cameras will operate around

schools, on bus lanes, bus stops and red routes or where public

transport must be kept moving. The code will also ban postal parking

tickets. In the future a parking warden will have to fix a ticket to your

windscreen.

The government are introducing the reforms to support high streets.

It is hoped changes will encourage people to shop locally rather than

out-of-town. The changes will also mean better protection for school

children because key routes and bus lanes will be clear.

More Information

Parking laws are complex visit these

websites to find out more:

britishparking.co.uk

gov.uk/government/consultations/

local-authority-parkingcontravention-codes-and-penalties

TOP TIP

Don’t assume parking

is always free on bank

holidays – check signs

for restrictions

The Code will:

• Prevent private parking companies

from using intimidating and

aggressive debt collection practices.

• Offer a 25% discount on the full

price of a ticket if you challenge a

parking ticket and then lose the

appeal at tribunal. Currently only

early payments offer a discount.

• Prevent fines for parking on an

out-of-order meter unless there is an

alternative way to pay.

• Allow local residents and firms to

request a review of parking in their

area. This will include charges and

the use of yellow lines.

• Mean parking adjudicators can

hold councils to account to tackle

problems like poor signs at specific

locations.

• See pavement parking restrictions

come into force across England. It

currently only applies to London.
