Centennial Swim<br />
On July 8, 1917, Group of<br />
Seven painter Tom Thomson’s<br />
life met a tragic end when he<br />
drowned in Canoe Lake, a popular<br />
access point to the waterways<br />
in Algonqiun Park, Ontario.<br />
One hundred years later, Canadian<br />
artist Paul Walde swam the<br />
three km length of the lake for<br />
his work titled Tom Thomson<br />
Centennial Swim.<br />
The swim was accompanied<br />
by a series of interconnected<br />
events: a brass band with a mandolin<br />
soloist performing a new<br />
long form music composition<br />
by Walde, three synchronized<br />
swimming routines a various<br />
points along the route and a<br />
flotilla of canoes carrying the<br />
band.<br />
The work primarily exists in<br />
two forms - that of the event<br />
itself and an audio/video work<br />
based on the footage of the<br />
event.<br />

On Friday, March 6, students in the Selkirk<br />
College Contemporary Music & Technology<br />
Program will have the wonderful<br />
opportunity to participate in clinics presented<br />
by The Sojourners. After spending<br />
a day with students, The Sojourners will<br />
offer up a concert open to the public in the<br />
Shambhala Music & Performance Hall on<br />
<strong>Nelson</strong>’s Tenth Street Campus. The public<br />
show is in partnership with the Amy Ferguson<br />
Institute.<br />
“These guys are the real deal,” says Contemporary<br />
Music & Technology Program<br />
Instructor Laura Landsberg. “We are truly<br />
blessed to have such amazing musicians<br />
come and work with the students and faculty.<br />
I am also very excited to be collaborating<br />
with the Amy Ferguson Institute in<br />
bringing The Sojourners to <strong>Nelson</strong>. Great<br />
things happen when the community and<br />
the college work together.”<br />
When Canadian blues icon Jim Byrnes<br />
called Vancouver-based gospel singer<br />
Marcus Mosely on the phone a decade ago<br />
to ask if he could round up a few friends<br />
to record some backup vocals for a new<br />
album, no one could have guessed what<br />
would happen next. From the moment<br />
Mosely and his pals stepped up to the<br />
microphone and began singing, they realized<br />
that they had something very special<br />
going on. When Byrnes dubbed the trio<br />
The Sojourners the name stuck and the<br />
rest is history.<br />
Formative years spent singing in the<br />
churches and streets of Texas, Louisiana<br />
and Detroit give the group an authentic<br />
sound that only comes with experience.<br />
This is real roots music, blessed with a soul<br />
that can’t be faked.<br />
After a break from recording and going<br />
through some changes, they have been<br />
reconnecting to their roots, revisiting the<br />
places they come from. What came out<br />
of this process is their newly released EP<br />
Freedom Never Dies <strong>–</strong> a four-song EP that<br />
is bare and honest.<br />
On Saturday, March 7, The Sojourners<br />
will be holding a gospel singing workshop<br />
open to the community at the United<br />
Church from 11 am to 4 pm. Working with<br />
singers and musicians of this calibre and in<br />
this genre is sure to be an inspirational and<br />

Projects to make<br />
environmental impact<br />
Twenty-nine projects throughout the<br />
Columbia Basin will help address the health<br />
of local species and spaces, from swallows<br />
and salmon to wetlands and forests through<br />
research, restoration and education. The<br />
projects are being supported with nearly<br />
$820,000 from Columbia Basin Trust’s<br />
Environment Grants.<br />
“Each project has a specific focus, but<br />
altogether they have broad benefits for<br />
strengthening the environmental wellbeing<br />
of this region,” said Brianna Burley,<br />
Columbia Basin Trust manager, environment.<br />
“By undertaking on the ground work<br />
today, these organizations are creating positive<br />
results that will stretch into the future.”<br />
The program helps fund projects that<br />
target ecosystems, climate, water and environmental<br />

In various locations around the Basin,<br />
Living Lakes Canada will work with citizens,<br />
local governments and others to<br />
collect data, that otherwise would not be<br />
collected. This information can then be<br />
used in water management decisions, climate<br />
adaptation planning and conservation<br />
planning to ensure sustainable water<br />
supplies for human use and to maintain<br />
healthy ecosystems.<br />
“Groundwater helps maintain water levels<br />
and quality in wetlands, streams, rivers<br />
and lakes, which are vital for healthy<br />
ecosystems and provide habitat for fish,<br />
waterfowl and wildlife,” said Carol Luttmer,<br />
program coordinator. “Monitoring groundwater<br />
provides information that could be<br />
used to manage multiple needs.”<br />
The Town of Creston will convert three<br />
former water reservoirs and 10 acres of<br />
land into habitats for species ranging from<br />
barn swallows, to western toads, to moths.<br />
Activities will include removing old liners,<br />
resloping steep embankments, developing<br />
shallow-water wetlands and fish habitat,<br />
building a bat condo and installing educational<br />
signage.<br />
“The project will allow the municipality<br />
to return unusable land back to public use<br />
while increasing, improving and providing<br />
habitat for various species,” said Michael<br />
Moore, chief administrative officer. “The<br />
diversity of wetlands and fish habitat will<br />
provide an opportunity for visitors to the<br />
area, including Creston Valley youth, to<br />
better appreciate and learn about the natural<br />
world.”<br />

ways the Trust supports environmental<br />

Hydro Rates for 2020<br />
<strong>Nelson</strong> Hydro is pleased to advise our customers<br />
that there will be no general rate increase for 2020.<br />
Revenues in 2019 were stronger than expected. With no<br />
general rate change, the 2020 revenues are forecasted<br />
to be sufficient to fund the 2020 operating budget<br />
while maintaining the existing dividend payment to the<br />
City of <strong>Nelson</strong>, capital reserve contributions for utility<br />
infrastructure and the increased level of vegetation<br />
management started in 2019.<br />
The 2020 zero % rate change applies to both City and<br />
Rural customers.<br />
The 2020 zero % rate change applies to both Residential<br />
and Commercial customers.<br />
With no rate change, <strong>Nelson</strong> Hydro will continue to have<br />
amongst the lowest residential rates compared to the<br />
other utilities in BC.<br />

across customer classes which may result in a rate redesign.<br />

Agricultural Climate Adaptation Research<br />

Columbia Basin Trust is providing a<br />
unique opportunity for youth to attend the<br />
Basin Youth Network Leadership Summit<br />
where they will meet new people, grow as<br />
leaders and have fun.<br />
Youth aged 14 to 18 from Columbia Basin<br />
communities can apply to attend this event<br />
in Kimberley on April <strong>24</strong> to 26 to develop<br />
and learn new skills, expand their friend<br />
circles and to make a difference in their<br />
community by setting youth-focused community<br />
priorities.<br />
“Basin youth are making positive impacts<br />
in their communities and we hope this weekend<br />
inspires them to think big and continue<br />
their great work,” said Michelle d’Entremont,<br />
manager, delivery of benefits, Columbia<br />
Basin Trust. “The summit is a way for youth<br />
to collaborate and network as they continue<br />
to build valuable life skills that will follow<br />
them into the future as they strengthen their<br />
leadership skills and take action.”<br />
The Leadership Summit is an actionpacked<br />
and interactive weekend with sessions<br />
that will support youth in finding their<br />
voice and taking action on issues that matter<br />
to them. They will interact with new people,<br />
try new experiences and most of all have<br />
fun. Youth will also have the opportunity to<br />
provide input into the renewal of the Trust’s<br />
strategic priorities during a special Our<br />
Trust, Our Future 2020 engagement session.<br />
“The Basin Youth Network was launched<br />
in 2016 to support the changing needs of<br />
youth and communities and it is amazing<br />
to see what has been accomplished since<br />
its inception. Youth are actively engaged in<br />
their communities and truly making positive<br />
changes in the communities where they live,”<br />
said Mike Kent, regional coordinator, Basin<br />
Youth Network. “The summit will connect<br />
over 100 youth to learn new skills and plan<br />
