KINGSTON FRONTENACS GAMEDAY REPORT

FRONTS HAVE ONE MORE BEFORE THE ROAD

KINGSTON HOSTS OSHAWA BEFORE SEVEN STRAIGHT ROAD GAMES

Tonight’s game against the Oshawa Generals wraps

up a busy two months of home games for the

Kingston Frontenacs. Since the beginning of 2020,

the Frontenacs have played 14 home games to just

6 road games. Following tonight’s game, Kingston

will play 7 straight on the road while the Tim Horton’s

Brier takes over Leon’s Centre.

Kingston has used the large number of home

games to climb back into the playoff race. Coupled

with a lengthy Niagara IceDogs losing streak, the

Frontenacs managed to win six home games and

climb within a point of the final playoff spot. To earn

that playoff spot they will have to find a way to collect

a few wins in some tough environments away from

home.

In 25 road games the Frontenacs have won just 5

games while losing in extra time 3 more times. That

equals 13 of the teams 38 points so far this season.

For them to leap frog the IceDogs, that number will

have to increase over the next two weeks. They can

earn a confidence boost by getting a win over some

top teams like Ottawa, Flint, Saginaw, or Windsor.

They will then head North and look for wins against

the Soo, Sudbury, and North Bay.

However, there is still one more home game to play

tonight and it is an important one. The Frontenacs

have yet to beat the Generals on home ice in two tries

this season. With two more opportunities, Kingston

can still get back to even against Oshawa at Leon’s

Centre, but that needs to start tonight by earning two

important points before they head out on the road until

mid-March. KF

@bouthockey ohlnetwork.ca

Much like a pro-hockey career, some OHL players

don the uniform of more than one team in their

young hockey life and such is the case for goalie

Christian Propp. General Manager Darren Keily

acquired Propp to help stabilize the Kingston crease

making the Frontenacs the fourth team the native of

Milton, Ontario would suit up for in the OHL, though he

also was property of Owen Sound, being traded before

playing a game for the Attack.

Acquired by Kingston on November 12, 2019, the

overage goalie born on March 27, 1999, has helped get

Kingston back on track after a tough start to the season

for the team. Along with friend and Assistant Captain

Nick King whom he played with in North Bay, he has

helped form a solid overage-leadership nucleus with

captain Jakob Brahaney guiding one of the younger

teams in the league. He has embraced the role saying:

“The veteran players are expected to lead the way.”

Drafted in the fifth round, 98th overall, at the 2015

OHL Priority Selection, Propp had just finished a strong

2014-15 season posting a 2.55 goals-against-average

in 36 games with the Halton Hurricanes minor midget

program. He would spend the 2015-16 season in the

GOJHL with the Guelph Hurricanes appearing in 18

games posting a 3.22 save-percentage also appearing

in two games for the Colts making his OHL debut on

Dec 6, 2015 in Mississauga coming off the bench.

In 2016-17, the 6-foot-2, 182-pound goalie would

16

become a full-time member of the Colts making his first

OHL start on Sep 30 in Sudbury. He stopped 22 shots

in an OT loss vs the Wolves. He would record his first

win in his fourth start vs the Flint Firebirds on Oct 15

making 36 saves on 39 shots. Propp also earned his

first shutout in his rookie season on March 11, 2018

blocking 33 shots in a 6-0 home win over North Bay

Battalion.

After three games to start the 2017-18 season in

the Colts net, Propp was on the move in a crazy day

that saw him initially traded to the Owen Sound Attack

before being immediately dealt to North Bay to begin

patrolling the Battalion crease. He was credited with

his first win and made his first appearance for North

Bay in a backup role on Oct 26, 2017 before making

his first official start for the Battalion on Dec 2 in a 3-2

overtime loss to London making 27 saves. Five days

later he earned his first starting-win at home making 28

saves for the Battalion in a 4-3 victory over Mississauga.

Propp earned a shutout on Jan 13 vs his former team

in Barrie and he had an incredible game on Jan 28 vs

Niagara making 41 saves in a 4-3 Battalion overtime

win.

Kingston fans became very familiar with the lefthanded

Propp during the 2018 playoffs as the Battalion

and Frontenacs would go head-to -head with Kingston

ultimately winning in five games. It was in game-five

that most will recall as one of the more memorable

games in Kingston’s history with the teams going to

three overtimes before the big Kingston series win.

Propp made 71 saves on 77 shots including 33 in the

OFFICIAL GAME DAY MAGAZINE, VOLUME 47, ISSUE 30

BILLY KIMMERLY

overtime periods alone as he stood on his head in one

of the better goaltending performances in a game you

will ever see. “One of the better memories in my OHL

playing career. I was tired and needed a lot of water,”

he commented afterwards.

The 2018-19 season saw Propp take the full-time

starters role in North Bay winning 24 games while

earning two shutouts helping North Bay earn another

playoff berth. He backstopped North Bay to a ten-game

winning streak from Mid-December to Mid-January.

He would appear in five playoff games vs the Niagara

IceDogs where he again faced plenty of shots making

at least 43 saves in every game including 50 saves or

more twice in the series won by Niagara posting a .929

save percentage.

On June 12, 2019, Propp was dealt by North Bay to

the Soo Greyhounds who were looking to get a veteran

goalie. To start the 2019-20 season, he appeared in 14

games winning four of his first five starts. However, on

Nov 12 he was moved to Kingston to team up with Ryan

Dugas forming a solid pair of experience and youth in

the Kingston crease. The move also gave Propp the

opportunity to finish his OHL career with fellow overager

Nick King, one of his closest friends off the ice.

“He and I are very close, he was one of the first ones to

reach out and welcome me to Kingston, I was ecstatic.”

Propp appeared in his first game for Kingston on

Nov 15 making 31 saves in a loss to Kitchener but then

would win five of his next seven starts with his first win

for Kingston coming at home vs Sudbury Wolves on

Nov 22. He’s made the OHL Saves of the Week on

multiple occasions this season with his best coming

vs the London Knights on Feb 15 as he made a midair

diving glove save preventing a seemingly empty-net

goal by the Knights. Count on Propp to make at least

one huge save every game.

The veteran has not only given stability in goal for

Kingston but just as important he’s helped provide

veteran leadership and experience to the youthful

Frontenacs who are helping push for Propp and his

two over-age teammates to one last playoff run. KF
