HELLO

Welcome to Volume Seven.

It’s been a touch over two years since the very first issue of Dancing With Her

Magazine was released to the wild, and even in that time frame, there has been a

change in the wedding industry.

We are seeing so many more couples feeling empowered in their wedding plans to

throw away traditions and get down to the core of why they’re making this decision

to marry. And, we think this edition really celebrates that.

Inside you’ll find Dee & Jess’ story. They planned their Byron Bay wedding from

their home in London. Jess had her non-traditional wedding dress same-day

delivered two days before they left for Australia. You’ll find Beck and Holly, who

threw a beautiful dinner in a greenhouse, shared their vows, and head out to a pub

to party. Beck feeling comfortable and looking good in a bright printed shirt. You’ll

also meet Èrica and Gessika, whose love for superhero’s shone through with their

unique Batman inspired wedding cake.

We a beautiful piece about embracing who you are and feeling comfortable in your

own skin by Benjamin Urquhart, of Kings and Thieves. It’s a piece that when I first

read it, I found myself going back and reading it all over again. It’s such an important

message, and I know I’ll find myself sitting down again to remind myself of the

messages he shares. We also get to meet the newly married Emily Riley, of Emily

Howlett Photography.

We bust some elopement myths and talk candidly about how you can travel safely

as an LGBTQ+ couple.

We know you’re going to love this edition.

Love,

Arlia & Tara

DEE & JESS

PHOTOGRAPHY BY PEPPERMINT PHOTOGRAPHY

www.peppermintphotography.com.au

BYRON BAY, AUSTRALIA

DWH | 15

DWH | 16

As a couple, Dee & Jess couldn’t be more different. Dee’s a stress head

while Jess is cool, calm, and collected. Jess constantly loses her belongings,

and Dee has everything in order. Dee is grounded, while Jess is a free

spirit. Basically, they’re a Gemini and Virgo at their finest. The least most

compatible signs, but somehow, they just work.

They don’t really remember how they met, they’ve just been in each

other’s orbit since they were 14 and lived in their hometown, Geelong. It’s

not where the two lovers live now, instead choosing London as their home.

There is a small part of the world that Dee and Jess call their special place,

Byron Bay. It’s where they first road-tripped to as new lovers, it’s where

they rang in multiple NYE’s and where they got engaged. There simply was

no other place for them to tie the knot.

So, they flew in from London, and flew their family up from Geelong. Just

25 guests made up this intimate affair.

Dee & Jess went for a less is more approach. They wanted their wedding

day to be a true reflection of themselves, something raw and laid back. So

laid back that they didn’t go into their day with any expectations – nothing

can disappoint if you don’t have a perfect idea in your head of how it

should be run.

The wedding was planned from the other side of the world. Something

that should have been stressful, but was made easy by a team of incredible

wedding suppliers.

Early on, it became evident that the couple was on the same page about

a big part of wedding planning, the budget. Neither bride-to-be felt

that spending a huge amount of money on one day was a good idea –

especially since they had plans to buy a home and go down the route of

IVF later on. That decision led to a private event without the bells and

whistles. There wasn’t a wedding arbor, expensive dresses, flowers, cake,

wedding parties or invitations. Dee and Jess decided that photography,

food, and videography were the things that were most important to them.

They splashed out on those, but cut back on everything else.

Although, there was a moment of muddiness where they nearly dropped

$12k on two dresses! They quickly snapped out of that idea, and laid out a

game plan to find a more practical solution.

Dee ended up walking into a London department store, tried on her little

white number, tested out if she could boogie and headed to the cashier.

Jess brought two white dresses, but three days before leaving for Australia,

decided they weren’t for her. So, she found one online, had a same-day

delivery, got the alterations and picked it up the day before they flew out.

The wedding day started out the same way that planning had gone… nice

and relaxed. The couple ate croissants and sipped champagne by the pool.

After hair and makeup, the photographer arrived and they had a prewedding

photoshoot in the villa.

When the time came, they jumped in their rental car and arrived at their

ceremony, meeting the coordinator and celebrant for the first time. Their

guests arrived via bus, and they welcomed them with drinks before the

ceremony began.

The ceremony was personal and lighthearted. After winning ‘rock, paper,

scissors,’ Jess read her vows first. Tears ensued, and then Dee’s vows. They

signed the wedding certificate, played a game of giant Jenga and sat down

to a shared tasting menu – the guests still talk about how good the food

was. And, after an hour of wining and dining, they swapped out heels for

comfy Cons and took up their position on the dance floor.

SELF EMBRACE

Words and Images by Benjamin Urquhart of Kings and Thieves

www.kingsandthiev.es

Have you seen a baby learning to walk? I have two kids, and my two-yearold

is still working this stuff out. She has such sass when she walks, planting

one chunky foot in front of the other, supported by loose knees and hips,

letting her arms sway in an opposite, gracefully-manic rhythm to the rest

of her body. Yeah, it’s adorable. And she flaunts it.

These kids do a bunch of cute stuff. Singing Frozen together in the middle

of the supermarket. Walking up to strangers and saying hi (might have to

watch that one). Checking themselves out in the mirror and planting huge

wet kisses on their reflections. They do all this stuff without thinking twice.

Their self-love and confidence is full and enveloping. And for their whole

lives, I’ve envied them.

When I think back to my own childhood, all I can remember is feeling

uncomfortable — always plucking at my shirt and double thinking what

I should say. Opting for conservative dress over something that would

offend or I thought would look weird to others. I was living inside my head,

for the most part, seeking validation from others and feeding this negative

feedback loop. It wreaked havoc on my confidence, and continued to do

so well into my teenage and adult years.

I’d always furiously wondered how other people could do stuff without

feeling weird, or feared what other people thought. I’d always wanted to

sing at the top of my lungs and dance uncontrollably, or on an everyday

level, have my photo taken without scanning the things I didn’t like about

my body and face. Usually, I felt weird in photos because I overthought

what ‘just act natural’ was, as if I had to hold back for some reason, and the

flash would go off while I’m stuck inside my head, producing a photograph

of the shell of who I truly was.

What’s up with this censoring of self, and how did it come to control my

life? How did I forget how to be comfortable in my own skin?

I realized recently through journaling and questioning, that for my entire

existence, I had welcomed my own negativity to exercise its power over

my self-expression and esteem.

Have you watched The Cosmos on Netflix? I did, a couple of years ago,

when I was in an admittedly depressive state. I wasn’t expecting the

change that was about to come, but twenty minutes into the first episode,

I was soaking in the deepest spiritual and existential experience (read:

crisis) of my life.

Without leading you too far down the existential rabbit hole, I realized

that in the scale of the solar system, our galaxy, and the billions of other

galaxies throughout the universe, all of the problems that were swallowing

me whole at that point in time, didn’t really matter. What’s more, the

amount of time that we’re here, alive and sentient, is minuscule against

the scale of time itself. We are here, for less than a second, floating on this

piece of dust in the universe...

...how incredibly liberating! Nothing breathed life into me than this

realization - the thought that I could do anything and actually live.

Finally, I could actually be myself and not worry about these made-up

repercussions. Why the hell was I letting myself waste the precious time

I’d been given, living a self-censored life?

I hope I’m not the weird one, and that this is speaking to you. But I think

we’re all the same, in one way or another. Take a walk outside (you’ll need

DWH | 22

it after reading this brain fart) and take note of the people you pass.

We’ve all evolved to be these weird, sentient, introspective, flabby, bipedal

creatures. And we all want and desire the same things, fundamentally.

We’re all built from the same parts. We all deal with feelings of negativity,

some more crippling than others. But a lot of the time, the origin of our

negative thoughts comes from ourselves, our big dumb brains expanding

on our fears of made-up social consequence and body image. There is

nothing more empowering than realizing that we are in ultimate control

of our thoughts and actions, and embracing who we truly are as our own

people is the greatest change we can make in our lives.

I would have never had the confidence to speak to a crowd of 100

professional photographers, including the idols I’d praised for years in

my industry, if it wasn’t for this line of thinking. When I got up to speak,

someone asked if I was nervous - I wasn’t in the slightest, because I knew

that all the humans sitting in front of me are all fundamentally the same as

me. And if I could use this temporary moment in time to make them feel

as empowered with their creativity and selves as much as possible, then

lemme at it. I know that’s what I’d want if I was sitting in the crowd.

We all want to be loved and encouraged. We want to feel good, as much

as possible. It’s exhausting hiding who we truly are.

These realizations have made me kinder to myself, a better photographer,

and more loving and accepting as a human being. Life is too short for

negativity, and none of us want to experience it. I’ll take any chance I can

get to encourage others, because I want that for myself.

When I’m shooting a wedding, or spending time with the people I’m

making portraits of, I want them to feel as liberated and electric as can

be. I’m a huge fan of the experience, and I want to foster real, intimate

situations where passion takes over, and you can’t help but live from the

heart. I want to be overflowing with that same energy, feeling great about

myself, so that the people around me feel the same way about themselves.

A word of advice for your wedding? It’s the same advice I’d give for any

other day. Do it for you. Flaunt the outfit you’ve always wanted to wear.

Play your favorite music. Stuff tradition, and live the day to its fullest. No

one has power over you and your choices.

I know a lot of us dread having photos taken, fearing the way we’ll look

in those photos. I’m still this way, and it’s hard to shake. But when you

choose your photographer (if you choose even to have one), make sure

they’re full of life, and that their work shows it. I’ve personally never been

a fan of the classic poses, they tend to feel a bit shallow. I want to live life,

and feel passion and magnetism. I think that the best photos embrace true

emotion and sweeping movement over technical perfection. I want to feel

and live life, dammit. Don’t you?

Just last week, I was paid the greatest compliment of my life. I was on

a shoot, and mid-way through the portraits with this couple, the groom

turned to me and said, “Your daughters are going to grow up feeling

amazing about themselves with you as their Dad.” I was fighting tears

then, and I am right now writing this piece. And as I peek out the door

of my studio and watch my two-year-old flaunting her sassy walk, and my

four-year-old singing at the top of her lungs, I can’t help but feel like I

should too.

BECK & HOLLY

PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHOTOS BY JESS ROSE

LONDON, ENGLAND

DWH | 25

DWH | 26

DWH | 27

DWH | 28

They locked eyes at Brighton Pride, stars aligned… and the rest is history.

Beck and Holly met almost five years ago and both recall that moment as

one of those, where ‘you just know.’ Life as a couple had its challenges at

the start, but after conquering those hurdles, they say life ‘became pretty

sweet.’

During a holiday to Berlin, where they were having the best time ever, Beck

decided to surprise Holly with her proposal. During a boozy afternoon on

their hotel rooftop bar, drinking Rosé in the sun and wrestling on the floor

(as you do when you’re in Berlin!) Beck whipped the ring out of nowhere

and asked Holly to be her wife. The freshly engaged couple then called

their friends, who were also in town, went out to celebrate!

Both Holly and Beck love being in nature as much as possible, so they

wanted a laid back wedding that was rustic and natural. They decided

that a rural venue within London was the right choice for them. With two

venues to choose from, they settled on Petersham Nurseries as it was an

absolutely beautiful spot filled with plants, flowers and wildlife.

To slide in with the laid back vibe, there was no strict dress code or any

rules. They just wanted people to come as their true selves! Being both

chilled people, they wanted everyone that came, including themselves, to

feel relaxed and happy.

Both Beck and Holly’s outfit choices were chosen to reflect their own style.

Holly had her amazing designer friend create a bespoke two-piece dress

just for her. Beck was on the hunt for the perfect, bright and original shirt

to wear, trying on over six different shirts until she found ‘the one’… and

what a perfect choice!

Petersham didn’t have a wedding license so the brides were legally wed

the day before.

On their wedding day, Beck and Holly celebrated with their loved ones in

an event that was simply perfect for them. They remember their guest’s

faces as they arrived at Petersham Nurseries, when they saw just how

beautiful the venue was.

The ceremony and reception took place in the venue’s glass nursery,

brimming with lush greenery and rustic tables lined with bright floral

arrangements of pink, peach and red hues.

Their two best mates James and James, one in drag, unofficially ‘married’

them at Petersham in front of family and friends. They were hilarious all

day, and their speeches were some of the most memorable moments of

the day.

After having many lovely things said about them as both individuals and as

a couple, the brides exchanged vows.

To avoid guests waiting around, they both decided against couples photos.

This meant they got to spend more time relaxing and just having a lovely

time. It also meant that their photos were extremely candid, honest and

heartfelt.

After the ceremony finished, they sat down at a big table to eat and drink.

Beck and Holly both reflect that it was very sweet and magical.

Then Beck and Holly took to the dance floor and had their first dance

to the hit ‘She Drives Me Crazy’ by Fine Young Cannibals- of which Holly

admits, ‘Because, she does.’ There was plenty of booze, so they spent the

rest of the evening partying and enjoying their time with their loved ones.

Looking back at their wedding day, Beck and Holly have no regrets apart

from wishing the day lasted longer - it flew by! They both admit they did it

just for the party… and, what a party it was!

DENISE & RACHAEL

PHOTOGRAPHY BY MOLLY GRUNEWALD PHOTOGRAPHY

DETROIT, USA

DWH | 36

Italian food and Aperol spritz set the scenes for not one, but two proposals!

After a move to Detroit over six years ago for Denise’s nursing job, she met

Rachael on dating site OkCupid. The pair met up and spent the entire night

talking endlessly, and were inseparable thereafter.

A few years later, the couple were planning a trip to Europe together. At

the same time, Denise had been secretly planning a surprise proposal.

After arriving in Europe, Denise and Rachael found themselves in Cinque

Terre, Italy. Whilst hiking between villages, Denise carried the ring safety

pinned in her pocket. They swam, ate focaccia, sipped Aperol spritz,

enjoyed a seafood feast and had the most beautiful day. She waited the

entire day and ended up proposing to Rachael in their Airbnb. Of course,

she said yes!

Funny enough, during a wedding planning date where the women were

yet again drinking Aperol spritz, Rachael reverse proposed to Denise.

Their friend Steve lent his skills, collaborating with them in designing

their wedding invitations- coming up with a folky, vintage vibe. They loved

their invitations so much that they decided to continue the vibe, and let it

inspire the rest of the wedding theme.

As Denise and Rachael already have an eclectic feel in their home, they

used a lot of their favorite pieces to decorate their wedding day! They

also delved into other DIY projects, such as making their own cake and

bouquets… and they were incredible.

In choosing a venue, the women scoured the internet for a location in

Michigan that was outdoors, offered accommodation and large enough

to host the event for all their closest family and friends. They visited

Green Gardens Community Farm for a tour and fell in love immediately.

To make sure they didn’t pick out the same wedding outfits, the brides-tobe

sent one of their bridesmaids to both fittings. Denise found her dress at

Detroit Bridal House -a highly recommended local business that she fell in

love with. While Rachael took a trip to Chicago with her friends and found

her dress and jumpsuit at the BHLDN showroom.

The night before their big day, they slept in separate rooms in the

farmhouse and met for their morning coffee. They then returned to their

bridal parties to get ready for the rest of the day.

Before the ceremony, Denise and Rachael met for their first look, which

was an intimate and emotional moment where they promised to stay with

one another for the rest of the day.

The brides then met guests for their beautiful ceremony at ‘The Vista

Site’ on the farm. Their vows were officiated by celebrant Robert Littleton

(a friend of the brides), making the exchange of vows extra special.

Shortly after, the newlyweds gathered with their bridal party in the

farmhouse and had a toast before they were formally introduced to

everyone waiting in the greenhouse.

They then feasted on tacos from Donkey Taqueria for dinner and had some

amazing toasts by their friends and family.

Then husband/wife DJ duo, ‘Good Music Gentleman,’ set the scene

alive with a Motown and funk style setlist. Denise’s favorite moment

was dancing with her wife, spinning in the middle of all their family and

friends! They partied long into the night, everybody having an amazing

time. It was magical!

A perfect day that brought to light what their own sense of marriage isgetting

to feel safe in their relationship and knowing that they can count

on the other person until the end of time.

It started with the perfect proposal, on Julia’s fifth attempt!

Julia and Lauren had travelled to Honolulu to attend a friend’s wedding,

and Julia wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to use the Hawaiian

landscape for a memorable proposal. However, a series of unfortunate

events led plan A to B to C, then finally D. Heavy rain ruined Julia’s plans to

pop the question on top of the Koko Head Crater, another friend’s proposal

hijacked her own beach sunset proposal and then unexpected tour groups

stole their privacy for plans C and D.

Nonetheless, Julia’s proposal on bended knee at the entrance of the

Diamond Head Crater was everything she could of asked for. After Julia

saw Lauren’s reaction to the ring, she proposed in a sea of tears and

Lauren said yes straight away.

Both Julia and Lauren wanted a casual wedding and let their mutual

love for craft beer guide their choice of venue. They both envisioned an

atmosphere that was both casual and intimate, with an emphasis on a

memorable party and leaving their guests with reveries of the love felt in

the room.

Julia showed Lauren the Moon Dog Ballroom, a brewery that she was

familiar with and they both agreed it was the perfect space for their day.

The function manager of the venue was in full support of their vision,

including having their beloved dog Archie as ring bearer during the

ceremony, which cemented their choice.

Their outfit choice was a given from the very beginning, with both girls

knowing that they would be wearing dresses. They decided to keep their

dresses a secret until the reveal prior to the ceremony and joked at the

thought of turning up in the same dress.

On the morning of their wedding, the lovers started off separately and

got ready with their bridal parties. Staying in the same hotel created a

challenge… to make sure they didn’t see each other before the first reveal.

Wearing bright sparkly docs, Julia walked to a beautiful spot between the

hotel and a section of the Yarra River, while Lauren drove with her dad and

sister. The girls both wore denim over their gorgeous gowns and Julia wore

a stunning floral headpiece made by one of her bridesmaids.

The reveal was one of their all-time favourite moments of the day, with

Julia bursting into tears of happiness upon seeing Lauren arrive.

The ceremony was perfect, adorned with DIY flowers that Lauren had

made with her father-in-law, surrounded by their loved ones and their ring

bearer, Archie the dog.

After family photos, the night kicked off with a performance by Julia’s

West African dance group, which she surprised Lauren by jumping in

and dancing in her wedding dress. There were some beautiful speeches,

followed by an amazing first dance.

To add a personal touch to the setting, a table was set up with photos

of their loved ones that had passed. Also, the room featured sugar skulls

and the papel picado decorations which were personalised and made in

Mexico as a knot to Julia’s Latin background.

The now married women then spent the rest of the night socializing,

drinking and dancing to hits including Daryl Braithwaite’s ‘Horses’. Their

marriage signified the beginning of the next chapter of their life as a family.

A day and night filled with love that echoed the persona of both its brides.

A note from the designer, Elissa Marie Design

www.elissamarie.com.au

On a cold and wet day, in the middle of a forest, we created a little change room in between trees,

hung bridal couture from branches, and created some magic. We were joined by a gorgeous young

couple Paige and Tahlia (together four years now). Our toes froze, we laughed too much, cried in

the presence of love, skipped between ferns and embraced each other with love. We created a little

project to reflect our hearts and raw beliefs, with no boundaries and no filters.

A long time friendship grew between myself and photographer, Teodora Tinc, as we each took on our

dreams and started our own little businesses. After collaborating on many photoshoots, learning, and

growing together, the Redwood Love Story was born, the most epic one yet.

Our hearts had a calling to express our love and support for marriage equality, and to inspire all

couples to strive for an authentic and unique wedding that truly reflects them.

After a long fight for their love to be heard, Èrica and Gessika found

themselves in Italy for their dream proposal.

After years of struggling for acceptance as a couple from their family,

Èrica and Gessika finally got the approval and recognition they so longed

for. This catapulted their relationship to a deeper level of love and

understanding.

In the European winter of 2017, they flew to Italy and got engaged at the

Trevi Fountain, in Rome. A moment that both women will never forget and

the beginning of many months of planning their dream wedding day.

After hiring Mrs. Popi, the best Spanish wedding organizer in the west of

Catalonia, Èrica and Gessika knew that their dream celebration was about

to unfold. Mrs. Popi used his famous skills of charisma, kindness and

affection mixed with a little rock and roll to bring their dreams alive.

On their wedding day, Èrica and Gessika began their morning with their

official ‘I do’ signing in front of the mayor, accompanied by bridesmaids

Naiara and Sandra. Once the signing was over, they said goodbye with a

strong and intense hug that would reappear a little later, with a new sense

of ‘forever.’

The women then returned to their respective houses to get ready with

their loved ones. Dressed in a stunning white gown and deep burgundy

suit, Èrica and Gessika made their way to the Divina Pastora de Balaguer

Estate, where all of their guests were waiting.

The day was perfectly captured by photographer Estefania de Antibisual

and the videographers from Kinotheque Weddings. The brides admit they

never stop looking at their perfect memories as it transports them straight

back to their wedding day.

As it was Gessika’s dream to see her bride walk down the aisle, Èrica arrived

early with her father and brother. In a moment that Gessika explains as

‘impossible to describe’, she watched her dream unfold as Èrica walked to

greet her, in front of everyone in the world that mattered to them.

The bride’s vows were officiated by their friend, Albert. Months

earlier, they had handed him a bottle of wine to ask the honor of

his officiation. It was his first time, but he was a complete natural.

Then, the alliances were brought to the brides by their cousins, which was

a surprise speech they had prepared. It was pure emotion.

A group of Batucada playing different instruments, cheered up the energy

and helped all the guests enter the dining room. Their bridesmaids then

surprised them by taking to the mic and singing a cover of their favorite

song, explaining how they met and all the experiences they had had

together. This was a fun and special moment, because the love between

the four friends was there for all to see.

The night continued with more surprises as the brides and their guests

sang, ate and danced the evening away. They even left guests amazed with

a custom batman cake that Èrica had made especially for her bride.

To end an incredible day, the garden had been prepared with candles and

flares. Without the new brides knowing, a song began to play and when

the lyrics “and everything rises” hit, the whole sky was illuminated with

hundreds of lights. Their friends had gifted them a castle of beautiful fire

in the sky that left them very shocked and excited.

It was a wedding that created a hangover of emotions, lasting for days.

A day that both Jessika and Èrica wish they could redo every year, for the

rest of forever!

HOW TO PULL OFF A DRY WEDDING

There’s an upward trend when it comes to people choosing to opt-out of

drinking alcohol. And, if you’re planning a wedding, there’s a strong chance

that either you, or your guests, will be reaching for non-alcoholic options.

Whether you’re planning a completely dry wedding, or a wedding with

just as many sober friendly options there’s a few things you might want

to keep in mind.

LET GO OF EXPECTATIONS

If you’re going completely alcohol-free on your wedding day it can be really

hard to let your guests know. Let’s be honest, for a lot of guests, a wedding

is an excuse for a big party, often synonymous with drinking. We’d suggest

being upfront and honest from the time you send out those invitations.

That way, you won’t have disappointed guests on the day asking questions.

If you don’t plan on supplying any alcohol, but your venue allows a BYO

option and you don’t mind people drinking, that might be an option to

consider too.

INCLUDE SOME NON-ALCOHOLIC BEERS, WINES AND SPIRITS

As the trend rises, so does the quality of non-alcoholic versions of wines

and beers. Most are actually brewed in the same way their alcoholic

versions are so they don’t taste like a weird watery alternative.

Non-alcoholic spirits are on the rise too, and some are an incredible

alternative. Generally, they are distilled in much the same way as your

favorite spirit, with the same flavors that you’ve come to expect, just

without the alcohol.

GET CREATIVE WITH MOCKTAILS

There are some serious contenders when it comes to non-alcoholic

spirits and the right bartender will be able to create something with

depths and flavors that mimic what your guests are accustomed to.

Instead of just using a non-alcoholic gin and mixing it with soda, you’ll want

to add ingredients that have those bitter, spicy, tangy flavors; everything

from vinegars to ginger, even a dash of tobacco syrup can make all the

difference.

SPICE UP THE SODAS

Move over basic mixers, say hello to kombuchas and ginger beers.

Generally, you’ll be saving cash on not purchasing spirits, so splash out on

fancy fizz alternatives.

It might even be a great idea to reach out to local bars who create their

own sodas too - some might be able to supply you with bulk orders for

your event.

TAKE YOUR GLASSWARE UP A NOTCH

When you drink wine, it’s from a wine glass. When you drink cocktails

it’s usually from another fancy-shaped glass. When you drink alcohol-free

options, they shouldn’t be the tiny glasses usually reserved for younger

guests! Get fancy! Visit thrift stores and collect interesting vintage glasses

if that is your style, hire out fancy martini and cocktail glasses, and grab

yourself some good looking reusable straws to use - we’re almost certain

that the fancier the look of the drink, the better it tastes.

GET YOURSELF AN AMAZING DJ

If you’re worried that a dry wedding is going to mean an early night and

minimal grooves on the dancefloor, you’re going to want to hire yourselves

a DJ that won’t settle for it. A good DJ is one that can get everyone up, at

any time of the day.

And, if you’re still worried, take the music requests from your guests! That

way, they’re guaranteed to love the tunes.

The Ahimsa Collective collaborated with Clean Coast Collective [a luxe

plastic-free brand] to create a vegan [washable paper] pouch to store

your favorite reusable straws. Lovingly handcrafted in Sydney, Australia.

You can get your very own pouch & straw combo to gift your guests via

DWH | 66

A Leonardo Di Caprio themed party bought these two lovers together, and

even though their stars seemed destined not to cross... it appears that fate

had other ideas.

Years later, Clara and Sophie found themselves on a birthday trip to Spain

which masqueraded as the perfect opportunity for Clara to propose. On

the day of their engagement (also Sophie’s birthday), all the usual things

went wrong… delayed flights, taxi strikes and two tired and hungry women.

Nothing that the amorous Spanish atmosphere couldn’t fix! After lunch at

a tapas bar, Clara grabbed a strategic bottle of champagne and whisked

Sophie back to their apartment for a romantic afternoon on their balcony.

Under the perfect disguise of birthday gift wrapping, Sophie’s ring awaited.

Clara first gave Sophie a long, heartfelt letter that alluded to a proposal but

didn’t ask ‘the’ question. She asked Sophie to open her present. As Sophie

was taking her time to open it, Clara literally took matters into her own

hands. She picked it up and opened it, asking, “So, what do you think?”

They cried, kissed, and Sophie said, “Yes!”

As both Clara and Sophie grew up in Sydney, they wanted their wedding

to reflect their life there. They decided on local venue Porteño Events- as

it reflected the things they mutually love: being by the ocean, the beauty

of nature, good food and even better wine. It was also the only place that

let you party past midnight – which was very important to them and their

fun-loving friends!

For campaign strategist Clara, finding a dress that was created under a

sustainable ethos was the most important to her. She found her choice at

a local consignment boutique in the heart of Sydney. Meanwhile, Sophie

settled on a dress from Karen Willis Holmes, which wasn’t what she

expected to pick, but the one she felt the best wearing.

The event had a black-tie dress code to give it a sense of occasion, and

as the brides didn’t want a theme, giving their guests a chance to dress

up and look fantastic was something they knew everyone could really

enjoy.

On the morning of the wedding, a stormy forecast set nerves awash,

however, the weather turned it on and cleared up at exactly the right time.

The brides traveled in classic black cabs, stopping for their private first

look. They both described this as a special moment that was really nice to

have together before the ceremony started.

The ceremony at Palm House in the Royal Botanic Gardens was perfectfull

of love and joy.

The brides were married by celebrant Andra Calacolce who created an

incredibly heartfelt and personal ceremony that encapsulated their

relationship beautifully. She incorporated an Acknowledgement of Country

and the two readings they wanted to include perfectly. From there, they

had drinks on the lawn and then took photos in the cactus garden, which

was a lot of fun.

The brides and their guests then made their way to their reception, at

Porteño, where the food was incredible. They spent the evening laughing,

crying and smiling as family and friends made gorgeous speeches.

Sophie’s heartfelt and vulnerable speech was Clara’s favorite moment

of the day, as Sophie reflected on how her younger fears of acceptance

had since morphed into the amazing reality that lay before them.

A perfect day where they got to share their love and commitment with all

their family and friends. A day that represented what marriage meant to

them- being okay and being with the person they love.

MEET, EMILY HOWLETT PHOTOGRAPHY

Who is Emily AKA Emily Howlett Photography?

Well, I’m actually Emily Riley now... since I just married my beautiful wife!

But, my business name will stay the same, as it’s where it all began.

I am a professional Netflix browser, dog-obsessed, unashamed, belly

laughing kinda gal with an unhealthy obsession with the tv show Friends.

I live for cozy nights on the couch with my wife, running in our paddocks

with our lambs, and of course... photographing love stories every week.

I am a suburban girl turned farm wife and I love every bit of it. I grew up

loving photography and spent years learning what I know now, but I’m still

always learning.

Why photography? Why weddings?

Honestly, I was initially terrified of shooting a wedding. When an old

primary school friend reconnected with me and asked if I’d photograph her

wedding in 2 years’ time. I figured that was enough time to start learning!

I shadowed another photographer for a while and so much. I then put all

that into practice with my own business, and here we are today six years

later.

Weddings are just something different. Everyone is happy and loved up.

There’s something so special about being a part of so many “best day

evers”, and knowing that the art I produce each time, will be treasured

and loved for a lifetime. Thinking about that just feels like a big warm hug.

How long in advance would you recommend couples reach out to lock

in a wedding date with you?

I always recommend 18-24 months for popular dates like Saturdays in

peak season, but I sometimes get bookings as little as 3-6 months out and

can sometimes have availability. I’m a planner type person, so I always

think the earlier the better.

How would you describe your style?

I’m all about documenting authentic and real moments, to their true

value. No awkward blank stares, no moody expressionless faces. I will get

those deep belly laughs and those smiles that hurt your face. I will also get

that moment when everything settles and you sigh with content, knowing

that this person standing with you, is the rest of your life.

I’m definitely not the black polo shirt with a logo type of gal, I’m the keep

it real and just blend in with your guests kind. So much so that I often get

mistaken for a guest, and by the end of the night I’ll be on that dance floor

dropping some bad moves with all my new pals!

I am a realist, so I document weddings for exactly what they are. If

it’s raining, I want to get out there with the umbrellas and embrace it. I

want your photos to reflect that in the most fun way. I want all my couples

to look back at their photos and relive the details the day that they didn’t

even know happened.

You get to travel around the globe capturing love stories, where is one

place you haven’t been yet, but wish you could go tomorrow, and why?

I’ve always wanted to go to Texas! As a new farm girl myself, I would LOVE

to photograph a true southern style country wedding. That would be

incredible. The food, the accents, the style, the weather, the landscapes.

All of it would just be insanely breathtaking!

Any advice for couples looking for a photographer?

I always recommend looking for a photographer whose style and vibe

aligns with your own.

I also say to look at their photos that are similar to your wedding aesthetic.

If you’re having a beach style wedding, then check out their beach shots

and make sure that’s exactly what you’re looking for.

When you’re not shooting weddings, what would we find you doing?

When I am not photographing weddings, I’m probably bulk watching the

TV show Friends, or running amok with my dogs at the park. My wife and I

have two beagles, and we love them more than life. We also have two pet

lambs, and I love to run around with them in the paddocks.

I also love my me-time, which involves either yoga or the gym. It helps me

center myself.

You’ll find Emily in our online directory of inclusive wedding vendors

from around the world, www.dancingwithher.com/directory

AN ELOPEMENT MEANS YOU CAN’T HAVE GUESTS

...And Other Elopement Myths

Elopements are still non-traditional and while there’s been a huge surge

in popularity. There is quite a lot of mystery around what an elopement is.

So, we’re here to bust some elopement myths.

An elopement isn’t just a ceremony that makes your marriage legal or

an event to snap some portraits. It’s a whole day, intentionally dedicated

to celebrating your love together. It’s intimate and meaningful, a true

reflection on who you are and a celebration of the commitment you’re

choosing to make together.

YOU CAN’T HAVE GUESTS AT YOUR ELOPMENT

Nope, not true. We’ve seen some beautiful elopements with the lovers’

immediate family present and others with just a handful of their favorite

people. The real difference between an elopement and a wedding is the

intention behind it all. If the focus of the day is just about your love, not

the reception that’s following the nuptials, it can still be an elopement.

While there isn’t a set number of guests that will take your small,

meaningful elopement to more of a wedding, we’d say once you get past

the 15 guests mark you’ll need to start planning to cater to the group.

When you start having to make those plans, that’s when your day starts to

become more of a wedding.

THEY ARE CHEAPER THAN A WEDDING

Sometimes, yes. You won’t need to entertain a large group of guests. You

won’t need an extravagant venue and you’ll save some cash on the open

bar. But, if you’re planning a wild elopement to a remote village in Europe

and buying a designer gown you’ve dreamt about for years, you might not

save the cash.

To be honest, cost isn’t usually the deciding factor when couples are

questioning whether an elopement is for them. Most couples choose

elopements because they want to celebrate their marriage in a way that’s

meaningful to them. Saving money is just a perk of that choice.

ELOPMENTS AREN’T LEGAL

This can be true, especially if you’re planning on eloping to a

foreign country, or you’re not planning on having an officiant or celebrant

as part of the day. Most couples who are taking their elopement

international, will usually file the legal paperwork before they leave, or

once they get back.

If you’re getting married on home soil, and you want to bring along an

officiant (generally, you’ll need a witness or two, it is best to chat to that

officiant about the legal requirements in your country - they will have all

the answers), then your elopement will be just as legally binding as any

other wedding.

ELOPING IS ONLY FOR PEOPLE WHO WANT TO GET MARRIED IN A HURRY

You could spend two years saving and planning your perfect week-long

elopement, or you could pull it all together in four weeks.

Your elopement could be as planned, or as sporadic, as you want it to

be. Much the same as any wedding. In the past, they might have been

considered as the best option for those who didn’t want to put in the

effort of planning a wedding, but now they’re a beautiful way to celebrate

your love and commitment intentionally.

YOU CAN’T INCORPORATE TRADITIONS INTO AN ELOPEMENT

There might not be an aisle to walk down or a wedding party to

stand beside you, but that doesn’t mean that all wedding traditions have

to be completely thrown out the window (unless, of course, that’s what

you want to do with them). You can still voice meaningful vows,

acknowledge traditional owners of the land, exchange rings and have

a first dance. In fact, if there are traditions that are important to you

on your wedding day, there is absolutely a place for them to exist at

your elopement.

The best part about eloping? There are no rules. If it feels right to you and

your relationship, do it.

Gem & Huda

Words by Gem

Photography by Translucent Photography

Our relationship turns four this year. How time flies when you’re having fun! We work at the same

hospital, and when mutual friends connect us it was like fireworks. We spent the first two years

embracing everything that was our new relationship. We met one another’s families and Huda came

out to her Mum.

Huda proposed two years ago. She had planned everything. She’d had a ring designed in America, she’d

planned to have it shipped over to their home in Australia where she would hide it in her bag and

propose on a holiday we had planned to Singapore.

But it’s not quite what happened.

Huda hadn’t anticipated that the delivery might not arrive on the date specified. It actually arrived on a

day when I happened to be home, and she wasn’t. The delivery person asked a lot of questions, made

me sign a lot of paperwork for a ‘valuable decorative metal’ and although I know I shouldn’t open that

isn’t mine, curiosity got the better of me.

I cried, put the ring back in the box and waited for Huda to come home from work.

I was honest with her, she wasn’t mad and instead hugged me, picked up the box and did the whole

shebang in our kitchen. It was emotional and intimate. Just the two of us, not photos, no videos and a

moment in time that I wouldn’t change for the world.

We video called our parents, then our closest friends and announced the engagement publicly a few

weeks later.

That holiday to Singapore still happened, but it was a trip solely focused on celebration. The honeymoon

bubble vibes were flowing every minute of the holiday.

KAILA & MORGAN

PHOTOGRAPHY BY RIVER + ROOT PHOTOGRAPHY

www.riverandrootphotography.com

DENVER, USA

DWH | 87

DWH | 88

Art and design student Morgan had been trying her luck at meeting the

right woman on lesbian dating app HER. After failed dates and a catfish

experience (another story in itself!), she had lost faith, was over dating and

about to delete the app.

Lucky for her, she held on long enough to grab Kaila’s attention. They met

and enjoyed a long date, with women both admitting it was an instant

connection. In true’ love at first look’ style…that they had both texted

their best friends during the date, telling them that they had met their

soulmates.

After nine months together, during a date where they shared the same

bottle of rose as on their first date, Kaila surprised Morgan with a creative

and unique proposal. After dinner, Kaila pulled out a gift for Morgan: a

beautiful compass! However, Morgan was so besotted with the compass

that she failed to realize there was a beautiful brushed gold ring dangling

from the chain. Kaila then asked Morgan to marry her and Morgan replied

with nothing, still geeking out about the ring and the compass. She finally

came to and said “YESSSSS....”

Kaila and Morgan started planning their wedding, deciding against a

wedding planner. They admit that this made things extremely stressful at

times and unleashed the inner bridezilla in them both. Friends and family

helped to keep them calm though, and surrender to the things that were

out of their control.

Both brides-to-be were set on a minimal boho vibe for their wedding

day. They both love how the boho style incorporates so many textures,

styles, and looks. Without a planner, they say that the whole day was a DIY

project. With the help of friends, the creative duo took control of every

aspect (food and flowers aside) of the day’s design, to bring their vision

to life.

When choosing their outfits, they decided on different styles that

complemented their own. Kaila went to a seamstress (Donna Beth

Creations) and had a beautiful boho dress that she liked completely

redesigned. She added bell sleeves, buttons, and the slit on the dress.

Morgan went suit shopping with her dad, who picked out a pair of

awesome leather shoes and the outfit was built from there. Most of her

accessories were emotionally significant pieces (including her late uncle’s

pocket watch, her father’s favorite bracelet, and her best friend’s necklace

that she has to match with the best man).

On their big day- that both brides admit went so fast, Kaila and Morgan

made a point of including as many LGBTQ+ vendors as possible.

Their ceremony was perfect, with lots of humor, poetry, heartfelt vows

and singing. The couple exchanged vows in front of their good friend and

celebrant Sarah Blizard, which became an essential part of how integral

their community was in implementing their vision for their day.

Being raised in Italy, Morgan wanted to incorporate a cultural tradition.

So, after the ceremony, everyone followed them to the reception. River

and Root Photography made sure to capture the most amazing pictures

of everyone walking behind them in support. The brides recall at that

moment, they were both thinking of their incredible support system and

how awesome it was.

Kaila and Morgan believe that marriage is about commitment

and promising to work through anything life throws your way.

After co-creating their perfect day together and then celebrating

in absolute beauty, they made sure to bring the essence of marriage

alive!

Kaylle and I had talked about getting engaged at the beginning of 2019, but we didn’t really know how

or when it would happen.

We went to look at rings together, because, frankly, I had no idea what she wanted and I had no idea

what I wanted. We both knew we wanted to propose in our own way, it was just a matter of who would

beat who to the first punch!

Kaylle had an adventure to Washington State in mind, but had no idea where or when. however, she did

plan an engagement shoot for the trip, so she knew she had to do it before that.

She didn’t tell me about this ‘adventure shoot’ (that’s what she was calling it!) until after we were in

Washington and all I had really packed was hiking gear. I definitely had my suspicions that she might

propose to me on this adventure shoot, and even though it wasn’t our style at all to get engaged in front

of a camera, with a photographer present, I decided to just go with it.

Three days before the photography session we had a private proposal.

We were hiking in the Hoh Rainforest in Olympic National Park and came across an unmarked trail that

leads to a peaceful view of the Hoh River. We sat down to take a break, listen to the sound of the river

and see if we could spot some wildlife. We had lunch and eventually I propped my head on my backpack

and closed my eyes.

Kaylle had mentioned she was going to go see what was up ahead and would be right back. It was during

that walk over the hill that she made the decision she was going to propose. When she got back I was

half asleep and she said she needed to grab something in the backpack. I felt something move but didn’t

think anything of it. A few minutes later she asked me to open my eyes, and laying right there on my chest

was the ring. Startled, I almost knocked it into the Hoh River because of how I was laying!

Thankfully it was saved and placed safely on my finger. It was the most perfect moment in a beautiful

rainforest, overlooking the most picturesque view. I will never forget that day and how I almost lost my

ring to the river!

Our adventure shoot came three days after our private engagement and it was a blast! I would highly

recommend anyone who is outdoorsy to try out a session. We hiked 6 miles overlooking Mt Rainer and

did a few dress changes in the frigid temps but it was all worth it.

I always wanted to propose back to Kaylle, fortunately, my planning wasn’t anywhere near as stressful as

hers. It just took some coordination with the people that I wanted to be a part of it.

A friend had suggested that since her Washington State proposal was so romantic, that maybe I try to

do something a little bit more playful and fun. So, we came up with the idea of doing a scavenger hunt.

I picked out different places throughout the Albany area that meant something to us and had friends

of ours at each location with memorable photos and a special letter I’d written... Each letter gave her a

clue to the next spot, which ultimately ended at a beautiful state park called Pebbles Island. A park that

Kaylle’s first house overlooked. I was there with champagne, flowers and of course the ring.

Our engagement brings our relationship to a more serious level for both of us and representation to our

families. It shows that we are committed and that we are ready to move forward in the form of a life-long

partnership.

Place two lovers at a Cancun beach shoot and what do you get? The

perfect surprise proposal.

Allyson and Grayson had planned a tropical vacation to Cancun to celebrate

Allyson’s graduation from law school and the completion of her bar exam.

Under the ruse of a photoshoot (something they both loved) Allyson had

been secretly planning her perfect beach proposal. Grayson had no idea

that the whole morning before their shoot, Allyson had been carrying the

ring safely in her pocket.

The photographer met them there and began taking photos. She had the

women face back to back, and take two steps forward, then turn and face

each other. When Grayson turned around, Allyson was down on one knee,

asking for her hand in marriage. Saying yes was never a question, and the

rest of the photoshoot turned into an amazing engagement shoot.

To fit their vision of a modern-boho wedding, Allyson and Grayson decided

on a venue that they both fell in love with at first sight: The Farmhouse at

Grassroots Farms. Usually, Allyson takes time to think things over but after

viewing the venue, she immediately said: “This is THE place.”

The brides opted for outfits that suited their individual style and say that

finding the perfect choice was the easiest thing about the entire wedding.

Grayson found a simple, lace dress online that she fell in love with, and

Allyson ordered her sleek burgundy wedding suit from ASOS.

As a DIY inclusion, Allyson harnessed her amazing calligraphy skills to

create the signs for their wedding. If she was feeling stressed after work,

she simply spent the time unwinding, making creations for their big day.

Their wedding day started off smoothly, and continued that way for the

rest of the day. They were both amazed at the fact that there was not one

moment that they could complain about. It was all absolutely perfect.

Both women got ready with their loved ones, whilst being snapped in a

breathtakingly ornate room filled with vintage mirrors and a rust-colored,

antique couch that was simply to die for.

For their personal vows, Allyson and Grayson kept it extremely private,

with only the photographer, Chelsea Reece present. The women decided

very early on that they did not want to read their vows in front of everyone.

This created a wonderful and intimate moment where they laughed, cried,

kissed… making their day that more special.

Then, for the ceremony and to uphold family tradition, Grayson had her

mother and grandmother walk in together. Allyson, adorned in a stunning

rust, slate, white, and burgundy headpiece with matching bouquet by

Rootstock Floral, had her parents walk in together first. Then the two

brides followed, walking in together holding hands.

Grayson and Allyson walked down the aisle to Johnny Swim’s ‘Take the

World’. They picked this song out before they were even engaged and just

knew it was the song for them.

The outdoor reception featured pontoon lighting perfect for under

the night sky. Gorgeous rustic table settings set the boho vibe alight,

lined with fresh gum and complete with vintage floral dinnerware.

Allyson’s blackboard signs were scattered throughout, with a standout

featuring the words ‘I love her and that’s the beginning and the end of

everything!’

Together with their guests, the newlyweds feasted and then danced the

night away under the night sky.

A perfect beginning of the rest of their life together. A day that they

realized that love is worth it all; the sacrifices, the hard work, the good

times and the bad.

HOW TO TRAVEL SAFELY

...as an LGBTQ+ Couple

If you’re planning a honeymoon, or even just a holiday, thinking about your

sexuality and being able to travel safely as a couple is something that’s

usually top of mind for LGBTQ+ couples.

Going to new countries can envoke fear; fear of rejection, fear of reaction,

and fear of safety. But, it certainly doesn’t need to stop you from enjoying

a holiday together - especially if you’re a newlywed.

TRAVEL SOMEWHERE THAT IS ‘LGBTQ+ FRIENDLY’

By this, we mean countries where marriage equality is recognized, or

where there are anti-discrimination laws.

If you’re really feeling uneasy about traveling as a couple, choosing a place

where your love is legally recognized might be a great start. Generally, it’ll

mean that LGBTQ+ people will be more socially accepted. Keep in mind

though that this isn’t always the case. Think of Australia, for example.

While there is marriage equality, it’s not always safe to be open about

our relationship, particularly when we are traveling to rural areas. Socially

opinions vary.

If you’re heart’s set on a country where these laws aren’t present, that

doesn’t mean you can’t travel. But you’ll need to be more vigilant.

TONE DOWN YOUR PDA’S

You’ll notice in a lot of cultures that public displays of affection, even

among heterosexual couples, are not common or socially accepted. That

means it’s a no-go for traveling LGBTQ+ couples too.

Kissing, holding hands, or affectionately touching one another are probably

things best kept to your hotel room.

If you’re not sure, look around you and see what other couples are doing -

this should give you an indication of what is and what isn’t safe.

REMEMBER THAT EVERY COUNTRY HAS ITS OWN STEREOTYPES

If your sexuality is stereotyped by the way you look or dress in your home

country, remember that while traveling, it might not be perceived the

same.

For example, if your short hair means people usually assume your sexuality,

in an Asian country, you might just be perceived as a woman with short

hair - nothing more.

YOU WILL NEED TO BE PREPARED TO ‘JUST BE FRIENDS’

If you’re in a situation where you’re feeling uncomfortable, and someone

asks directly about your relationship, you will want to be prepared to

answer with ‘we are just friends.’

This one can be challenging, and quite frankly, can make you feel like your

relationship is invalidated or less than. Don’t forget to take care of one

another when you’re in the safety of your room and show a little extra

love.

FIND SAFE LGBTQ+ SPACES

It can be tiring going about your holiday, thinking actively about your

safety. Seek out LGBTQ+ bars, and cafes - spaces where you are free to be

you and free to celebrate your love without the worry.

JUST ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAY

More than anything. Just enjoy yourself. Traveling is such an incredible

experience for all couples, regardless of your diversity.

DWH | 123

vietnam

Vietnam is certainly a hot spot right now, and surprisingly, it’s one of the

most LGBTQ+ friendly countries in South East Asia. While the country

doesn’t allow marriage equality, Vietnam doesn’t have laws that actively

discriminate LGBTQ+ people and the country is welcoming to all travelers.

It’s also so rich in culture. Separated into North, Central and South regions,

each one has it’s own unique subculture and even different cuisines.

WHAT DO DO

If you’re hoping to visit a big city and adventure through art galleries,

markets, and bar hop - you’ll need to do it all in Ho Chi Minh City. It’s a city

that’s rich in history, but also in culture. Be sure to check what’s showing at

the Saigon Opera House while your there. They tend to host quirky shows

that show a unique insight into the daily lives of the Vietnamese people.

Hoi An is also a must stop. It’s in central Vietnam, but getting about is

really cheap - a flight from another major city can cost as low as $19. It’s an

enchanting little town - the only one in Vietnam that doesn’t allow cars or

motorbikes and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

At night it comes alive. With nightly markets, colorful lanterns scattered

overhead, and the river fills with traditional fishing boats offering romantic

short cruises.

And, if you’re heading North, Ninh Binh is a less travelled spot that is a

must see. Among limestone cliffs, you’ll find tranquility and a very unique

way that locals get around the rivers - they use oars, and paddle with their

feet.

WHERE TO STAY

Something a little cheaper - The Alcove Library Hotel, Ho Chi Minh City. A

hotel with floor to ceiling bookshelves and close to everything you’ll need

- yes, please. Head up to their rooftop bar and soak in the atmosphere.

Prices start at USD$37 per night.

Going all out - The Four Seasons Resort, Hoi An. This little slice of paradise

could easily be the most relaxing spot you’ve ever been to. An on site

spa, complete with lovers rooms and a couples bath and daily yoga and

meditation really amplifies the magic. Our suggestion, don’t miss the Nam

Hai Cooking Acadamy, it’s a unique look into the day to day lives of the

Vietnamese people and their love for fresh, delicious food.

Prices start at USD$900 per night.

If you are heading to rural area’s hiring a scooter to get about is super

cheap and easy, but local grab drivers can be hired if you aren’t feeling

confident.

hawaii

Sure, Hawaii might be front of mind for couples hoping to experience some

adventure on their holiday, but it’s the rich native culture most people fall

in love with most. Spread across countless islands, and experiencing just

two seasons; summer and warm winter, the Hawaiian culture is spiritual

and deeply connected to nature.

WHAT TO EAT

Where do we start?! Hawaii might be another state of America but it’s

cuisine is totally unique. Haupia is a traditional coconut treat and if you

don’t leave addicted, you didn’t eat enough.

Ramen is traditionally a Japanese dish, but the Hawaiian people know how

to do a really good bowl of the pork, soy, or chicken-based noodle soups.

There are quite literally thousands of Ramen restaurants across the islands

each with their unique flair - it’s worth giving a few a try.

If you eat meat, Laulau is a Hawaiian comfort food traditionally cooked in

an underground oven. It’s a chicken or pork dish, wrapped in taro leaves

and tastes especially delicious served with poi.

CULTURAL EXPERIENCES

Again, you’ll be spoilt for choice!

Once a month, under a full moon, Twilight at Kalahuipua’a, a celebration

of the Hawaiian culture that includes storytelling, singing, and dancing. It

is actually a celebration that originates from old times when family and

neighbors would gather on back porches to sing, dance, and “talk story.”

If you’re honeymooning from February to September, on weekday evenings

and weekend days, hundreds of canoe paddlers gather at Ala Wai

Canal and practice the Hawaiian sport of canoe paddling. Pack a romantic

picnic, find a comfortable spot at Ala Wai Park, next to the canal, and

watch this ancient sport come to life.

To some waking up before sunrise doesn’t sound appealing, especially on

your honeymoon, but we promise this experience is worth it. A hi’uwai,

a traditional Hawaiian cleansing experience that’s led by a native healer.

They chant as the sun appears on the horizon, and you are asked to bring

forward in your mind whatever is holding you back or worrying you as you

wade into the healing waters of Waikiki. As the water reaches your face,

release those fears or worries into the sea and then walk backward until

you’re back on the beach. By then, you’ll be spiritually cleansed and ready

to move forward in life.

It’s probably one of the most amazing ways you could start a day. And one

of the most sacred ways to walk into your new marriage.

DWH | 125

spain

Spain is one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly countries in the world - if that’s

not inviting, we don’t know what is.

Discovering the food of Spain is a cultural experience in itself. The locals

feast on tapas, multiple small meals that are shared between your group,

and it’s the best way to taste the many wonderful flavors the country has

to offer.

A Spanish must eat, Paella - and let’s be upfront; you’re going to be spoilt

for choice when it comes to choosing where to eat it. Do your research

before you go - ask your accommodation, ask locals - it’s also one of those

dishes that everyone thinks they can do, but very few have mastered.

CULTURAL EXPERIENCES

Visit the Magic Fountain in Barcelona. Constructed nearly 100 years ago,

it is a spectacular show of light, color, and music. Sure it’s popular with

tourists and you will need to get in early for a front row seat at night, but it

is popular for a reason! It’s totally free, and you’ll notice locals selling beer

and wine on the streets throughout the show.

If you’re even somewhat into sports, go and see Catalans, the Barcelona

Football Club, play. They’re one of the worlds most popular and most

sucessful clubs and with a stadium that seats around 100,000 people - it’s

an experience like no other. The football culture of Barcelona is very much

alive.

If you’re foodies travelling between January and March, Calçotada is a

must. It’s a local ceremonial meal where the calçot vegetable is devoured.

It’s a unique vegetable, something between a leek and a spring onion, that

is cooked over a hot fire and smothered in a messy, but delightful, peanutbased

sauce. It’s traditionally enjoyed with large amounts of wine, and it

would be rude to skip tradition, right?

WHERE TO STAY

Something a little cheaper - Pack a tent and go camping! There are

hundreds of campgrounds [keep in mind that wild camping is prohibited

across the country] that are cheap and fully equipped with everything you

need. You might even get lucky and score a spot overlooking the ocean.

Prices start at USD$12 per night.

Going all out - Hotel Casa Palacio Maria Luisa Stepping out onto your

private balcony overlooking old town is going to be a morning ritual you’ll

miss after your stay here. It’s modern, but vintage style is romantically

unforgettable, a place you might only ever expect to see in the movies

come to life.

Prices start at USD$300 per night.

DWH | 126

brazil

When we think Brazil, we think festivals and Carnival - but the culture is

actually rich and one of the most diverse in South America. Each part of

the country is made up of entirely different cultures thanks to immigration.

While there are no current laws that discriminate against the LGBTQ+

community, and there are, in fact, laws that actively protect the community,

the political climate can be unstable. It’s best to do a little more research

about the particular areas you were hoping to visit before you go.

Many of Brazil’s Indigenous populations call the north home. The Amazon

is a lifeline for millions of people, and the culture of fishing, hunting and

living from the land is still very much alive.

The northeast is popular for tourism, with the stunning beaches and

national parks, it’s easy to see why. African culture is very alive and it is

something you can explore through local music, food and religion.

WHAT TO DO

Visit Foz do Iguaçu. It’s the worlds largest waterfall - it makes Niagra Falls

look tiny. Don’t be afraid to walk on the boardwalk. Looking down from the

top of an 80m waterfall is an incredible experience.

Into scuba diving or snorkling? Visit Fernando de Noronha, a marine

conservation area that is home to some unique sea creatures, it’s still

undelveloped and that’s its beauty.

Spend a few nights in Olinda. It’s such a unique city, one that celebrates its

rich African roots - a cultural wonderland of churches, museums and art.

The southeast of Brazil is probably the area you’re most familiar with.

Home to Carnival in Rio de Janeiro - if this isn’t on your bucket list, you

best add it.

It draws in people from all over the globe, connected by the unifying beats

of the steel bass drums. The food, the colors, the costumes, the music - it’s

one of those ‘you need to see it to believe it’ type of experiences. One that

you will carry with you forever.

And, if you’ve got time to head to the south, you’d be forgiven for thinking

you’d stepped into a completely different country. Influenced heavily

by European immigration, German architecture, cuisine and events

celebrated each year - Oktoberfest being a huge cause of celebration.

Whichever part of this big country you choose to explore, be sure to take

time to walk the streets and soak it all in.

Visit the Amazon. Did you even go to Brazil if you didn’t visit this

extraordinary region? If you’re lucky, you might even spot an elusive pink

dolphin swimming through the biodiverse rivers.
