FOOD & DRINK
But is a vineyard really the go-to destination? On initial
thought, the wonders of winemaking may be way down your
list when compared to the thrill of a rollercoaster or fish and
chips on the beach, but you may be pleasantly surprised
with the range of facilities many have to offer. From tours
and tastings to restaurants and even the opportunity to stay
overnight, heralding the opportunity to fling open the curtains
in the morning to a sea of vines. Wine tourism is starting to
gain new ground.
Tempted? Here’s a selection that are worthy of an entry into
your sat nav…
Flint Vineyard, Norfolk
Ever fancied quitting your job and jet-setting across the
globe to some of the famous wine regions the world has to
offer? Well, this is exactly what Hannah and Ben Witchell
did back in 2007 and upon returning to the UK, Ben moved
to Sussex with Hannah and enrolled into a 3-year degree in
Oenology and Viticulture at the highly renowned Plumpton
College. After graduating with a first-class degree they
moved to Beaujolais, France, where Ben had secured his first
winemaking post before returning to our shores to start a new
life making wine in the eastern counties.
Flint Vineyard is one of the finest examples of winemaking
in East Anglia and their Discovery Tour includes an optional
‘15 mile lunch’ which allows visitors to sample the culinary
delights of the local area, all produced within a 15 mile radius
of the vineyard. Their highly regarded Charmat Rosé is a
tantilising tipple.

Giffords Hall Vineyard, Suffolk
Giffords Hall is a family-owned vineyard planted on the site
of an ancient glacial riverbed near the historic village of
Long Melford. Planted 25 years ago, there’s an abundance
of exciting varieties including Bacchus, Pinot Noir and Pinot
Blanc which all grow well on the site.
It’s worth booking one of their ‘Grand Tours’ which start later
in the year and include a tasting of wines and liqueurs, plus
you can even bring along your canine friend to keep you
company. The vineyard also has a cafe and gift shop. If you’re
looking for that ideal gift, I’d recommend their rosé magnum.
It makes for the perfect table centrepiece.
