Punting in

Cambridge

If you think about punting, what image pops up in your

mind? A hot sunny day, a gondola shaped river boat

gliding down the winding paths of the river and a

well-balanced young man or woman manipulating a

very long pole in and out of the water to keep you on

track? So why haven’t you tried? Here is our guide to

punting on the river in Cambridge.

Punting dates back to the mid 1800s on the River

Thames. It wasn’t until the start of the 1900s when

a boat building apprentice by the name of Maurice

Scudamore was involved in the building of the first punt

in Cambridge. On his return to Cambridge in 1903, he

founded Scudamore’s Boatyard, where he began to

build and hire rowboats for pleasure and eventually

punts too. Previously punts had only been used for

transporting small cargo or as pontoons for fisherman.

By the 1920s punting had overtaken any other boating

activity in Cambridge. So, this is where we will start with

the oldest punting company in Cambridge.
