Awards<br />

The <strong>2020</strong> Newport <strong>Seafood</strong> and <strong>Wine</strong> Festival Amateur <strong>Wine</strong> Competition<br />

took place on Sunday, January 26th. The Greater Newport Chamber of Commerce<br />

(GNCC) received wines from amateur winemakers around Oregon, Washington,<br />

Nevada, Oklahoma, and New Jersey. <strong>Wine</strong>s were sorted by variety and then<br />

arranged into flights to be blind tasted by a select panel of judges. Scores were<br />

given for color, bouquet, taste, finish and overall impression. Twelve of the<br />

fifty-three wines submitted earned a gold medal, eleven wines earned silver<br />

medals, fourteen earned bronze medals, and sixteen of the submissions were<br />

non-medalists.<br />

Bronze medals were awarded to: Pat Lancaster – Apple and Pinot Gris, Mario<br />

Pierce – Muscat, Phil Bard – Pinot Noir, Ken and Barb Stinger – Merlot, Robert<br />

Hatt – Mourvedre, Paul Boyechko – Chardonnay, Rick Nuttall – Whiskey Dip, Mike<br />

Doherty – Syrah, Greg Ross – Gruner Veltliner and Frontenac Rosé, Tom York –<br />

Plum, Otto Broz – Blackberry, and Rick Blasquez – Pinot Noir/Cabernet Sauvignon.<br />

The most prestigious award of the competition, Best in Show, went to Phil<br />

Bard with Bard Cellars from Lake Oswego, Oregon, for his Red Blend of Cabernet<br />

Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. The judges<br />

awarded a score of 18/20, noting the fruity, well-balanced<br />

aroma, strong color, mature taste and balanced<br />

finish of the wine. All the judges were impressed with<br />

the high quality of Bard’s Red Blend. Bard also received<br />

a bronze medal for his Pinot Noir.<br />

Gold medals were also awarded to the following<br />

contestants: Rick Dunlap – Blueberry, Robert Hatt –<br />

Petit Verdot, Paul Sowray – Grenache, Mike Wilskey<br />

& Randy Morgan — White Blend, Mike Doherty –<br />

Viognier, Bill Brown – Pinot Noir, Ari Grey – Pinot<br />

Noir, Adrian Burling – Marechal Foch, Greg Ross –<br />

Frontenac Noir, Kory McClintock – French Rosé, and<br />

Russ Gammon – Plum.<br />

Silver medals were awarded to: Mike Janisse<br />

– Fruit & Berry Blend, Marionberry, Blueberry, and<br />

Raspberry, Ken and Barb Stinger – Malbec and<br />

Zinfandel, Robert Hatt – Pinot Noir, Paul Boyechko –<br />

Viognier, Rick Nuttall – Merlot, Mike Doherty – Syrah,<br />

and Greg Ross – Zweigelt Rosé.<br />
