In this section we offer some suggestions of further reading for those who want
to follow up the themes presented in the chapters above. The arrangement is by
chapter but is prefaced by a brief introduction to the relevant classical texts and
by a listing of the most useful general accounts, many of them catalogues of international
exhibitions which, in addition to illustrations and descriptions of objects, all
contain helpful introductory accounts written by specialists.
I have suggested English language texts where they are available. There are comparatively
few general accounts, rather more museum catalogues, and many more
specialized articles published in monographs and journals. These are supplemented
with publications in French and German and also a selection of publications in Russian,
chosen either because they are basic sources, like excavation reports, or because
they cover subjects not well represented in western European language publications.
Titles are given first in Russian followed by an English translation in parentheses.
It would have been possible to include many more references to Russian language
publications but these works are difficult to find in Britain except in a few specialist
university libraries, and even then we are not well served. A reader who wants to
know something of the range of Russian literature available will find that many of the
works cited here have full bibliographies.
For many readers one of the attractions of the Scythians is the brilliant art which
they made for themselves and which was produced for them by Greek craftsmen. The
various catalogues listed under General Works below provide excellent photographs of
all the major items and we have included as many as possible in this volume. Consulting
a good catalogue is an ideal way to gather first impressions of the Scythians and
their remarkable way of life.
