Gender Fluidity
Both Herodotus and the writer of the Hippocratic text On Airs, Waters, and Places were
aware that gender among the Scythians was a more fluid concept than they were used
to and both comment extensively on the fact. We have already referred to warlike
women (above, pp. 121–2). Pseudo-Hippocrates is explicit:
